Overview: Victory is one of the courses at the 36 hole Verrado Golf Club. The course is a Tom Lehman design that opened up in 2017. The course sits in the foothills of the White Tank Mountains that has sweeping views of downtown Phoenix, the Estrella Mountains and the White Tank Mountains. Price was $89 per player on a picture perfect Sunday morning w 7:15 am tee time. The temperature started out at about 72 degrees and was at 96 degrees when we finished at 11:30 am.

Clubhouse: The name of the clubhouse is the "Cliff House" ... which sits about 100 feet above the 18th green. There is an outdoor seating area that overlooks the 18th green. It is a great place to sit and have a drink after the round and to enjoy the views off to the west and southwest. All of the staff were very friendly, and I was surprised that the course was not busy.

Practice Range: A very nice range that has a great amount of space to warm up before your round. Each grass station was in excellent condition and the Taylor Made balls were good to warm up with. You drive up the hill to an excellent practice green. The practice green was in excellent shape and I was surprised on how fast the green was running.

Course: For the end of May, the course was in excellent shape. Fairways had plenty of turf to hit off of. The bunkers were in excellent shape and had a good amount of quality sand in them. The rough was cut very tight and was basically very easy to hit out of. The greens ran very smooth and were just as fast as the practice greens. The greens were probably in the best shape and had as much speed as I have probably seen them during the 6 years that I have played at Victory. Very happy with the condition of the course!!

Final Thoughts: Golf prices in the AZ desert have been quite high the past 6-9 months. I think that the $89 rate was a fair price for the condition of the course and I will definitely try to get back and play here again before green aerification begins on 6/5.

Overview: The Victory Course at Verrado Golf Club is one of the golf courses at Verrado Golf Club ... a 36 hole golf club. The course opened in 2017 and was designed by Tom Lehman. The other golf course at the Verrado Golf Club is called the Founders Course, and was designed by the team of Tom Lehman and John Fought. Both courses are separated by almost 2 miles and have 2 different clubhouses.

Clubhouse: The clubhouse at Victory is called the "Cliff House" and is a smaller clubhouse then the one at the Founders Course. The Cliff House overlooks the beautiful 18th hole at the Victory Course. It sits about 100 feet above the 18th green and also gives you a great view from their outdoor patio of the White Tank Mountains to the north and west of the course. I always enjoy the course, but especially like the finishing holes of #15-#18 ... with the par 5 18th hole being the signature hole on the course. This par 5 is a double dog leg and has the green set in a box canyon, with a tee shot that forces you to carry water with your drive.

Course: With the weather being so hot in Phoenix this summer, due to the lack of the monsoon season, I was expecting the course to be not in good shape. I was pleasantly surprised to say that it was in much better condition than I expected. Tee boxes were level and had good grass coverage. The fairway bermuda grass was quite lush and other than a couple of areas where water had collected, the fairways were in nice shape. The rough was about one half to an inch in length and was consistent. The greens were in nice shape ... they ran pretty smooth and were just at a medium speed and had not been cut that morning. The sand, as always was of good quality and easy to hit out of.

Finally Thoughts: While I have always enjoyed playing the Victory Course, housing development has started to happen on the back nine around the course over the last couple of years. Unfortunately, that development is starting to happen on the front nine. I enjoy the front nine because you play closer to the White Tank Mountains and the views are amazing. While housing is a necessity to keep the community of Verrado flourishing, it will definitely take away a little bit of the natural beauty of the surrounding area around the course ... especially by holes #8 and #9. Victory is a course that you should play if you visit the " Valley of the Sun".

Played the Victory course for the first time today. It was a cold and very windy day....we teed off at 0930 and it was 41F, with a cold wind steady at 20 mph with gusts exceeding that. Due to recent heavy rains it was cart path only. 2 things, don't even consider walking this course, and if it is cart path only....leave, some places it is virtually impossible to get from the cart path to the ball without leaving the cart 20-30 yards ahead of or behind of where you would need to walk to your ball....lots of rocks, rocky waste area, "valley's" which is not fun nor practical. As it was extremely windy and cold today it wasn't really lots of fun. (those who played Rams Hill in early December in the GK Plays in the wind....this was worse!!!) The course was generally in good shape, the rains made some areas soggy, and there was some standing water on the fairways-not too much but some. I totally understand why they were cart path only but it's a pain. The fairways were good, greens have lot of drop off areas, are extremely undulating, and are exceptionally fast downgrain and slow upgrain. If you have a downhill, downgrain putt or chip it will be very difficult to get the right weight and distance-very challenging that way. The greens were in excellent condition, as were the tee boxes. Was only in the sand once and it was thin but ok. I found that the fairway bunkers had high banks/lips (so did playing partners) in that we had to essentially blast out sideways or blast like a greenside bunker as the lip was too high/steep to use anything but a sand wedge or PW at best---pretty penalizing on a par 5 or ling par 4. The design of the greens may cause some real problems in the future as there may not be many places to put the hole. It is a pretty course, nice views. Customer service good, staff friendly beer cart was around regularly. There is not club house, very small (and likely temporary) pro-shop. It is vastly different from its older sister down the road.

Played my round with a hot deal at 12:57pm for $11 from Golf Now. Showed up to the course, after playing Coldwater, at 12:00pm and checked in with the pro shop attendant. The cart barn guys carried my clubs right from my car basically and I walked into the pro shop which by the way, is situated at the top of the "cliff" as they call it looking down upon the Par 5 18th, and driving range. Beautfiful, definitely worth stopping by the bar after the round if it wasn't 114 degrees out. The pro shop guy told me to speak with the cart guys about heading out "possibly 10 minutes before the tee time" and I was irritated. I showed up early, the course is empty and he wants me to wait?! I spoke with the cart guys and said they don't care, go out earlier to return earlier. Sounds good to me!! The course conditions, **they aerated the greens on 7/22 and were closed for the following three days**, were immaculate. The tee boxes were firm and allowed any placement of tee. The fairways were incredibly green and lush. The rough was visible from the tee box so keep an eye on your ball. The bunkers, were plush and like powdered sugar machined raked. Though the greens were aerated they were definitely playable besides hole 9, as those three days of closure helped recover quickly. This course is definitely playable even after aeration. Now, strategy thoughts. This course is designed by Tom Lehman. A well known name in the golf universe for his play. His designing skills, at least at this course, questionable. Yes they have yardage books for sale in the pro shop for $10+tax...but if it's your first time playing the course, don't play from where you normally do. The tips are unplayable the first time. You can't see the intended landing areas on any tee boxes after the first 3 holes. The back nine is a joke, basically from the tee boxes if you see any fairway, don't aim at it. You'll end up in the rough or bunker. See a hill of rocks blocking the view of the fairway, aim at that most likely. This course has what I call manufactured difficulty, the layout or the greens don't make it tough but the distance and the narrowness of the holes cause ridiculous strategies. From the tips, there are THREE par 5's that top out above 590 and they all play into the wind making it at least 640+. The yardage book should be included with the tee time as otherwise, the semi-blind tee shots and approach shots become impossible without them. 14th, "drivable par 4", is without a doubt the poorest designed hole in the world. That's not a hyperbole. Worth a play, but bring your long game...and preferably a MAP. I will be posting a TON of pictures later, might be worth a drive to play and test your game if you'd like to play what I will call BETHPAGE BLACK-WEST.

Overview: Happy New Year and I wish all the GK'ers the best in 2018. Was very fortunate to get back out and play Victory on Wed 12/27 due to sixpez sending me his "bounce back" round at Verrado for the month of December. Keith, appreciate that you sent me your coupon to play Victory at such a great rate ... thank you. It's always nice to be able to play golf in the Arizona desert in the month of December for $25. Yes, $25 to play this course! Course Conditions: One of the concerns that I had about Victory was that they did not overseed the greens (the greens are not bent grass). I asked the starter about this when I played here in October and he said that they would get more of a "tan" color the further they went into the high season of December - February. I asked him if the greens would still roll true and be quick ... he said that they would. I then commented that our winter visitors can complain a fair amount if the greens do not have a lush green look if they do not have a rye grass overseed. He said that the strain of grass on the greens will make them much more playable throughout the entire year. As I played the round, I noticed that the greens definitely had more of a tan "hue" on them, and in a couple of spots if looked liked they had spray painted them with a little bit of green paint. Yes, they did have a nice pace and did roll true, but I am still concerned that our winter visitors will complain about the greens when the rates jump to $119 in the month of January. The fairway and tee box overseed turned out good, but not great. There were definitely some thin spots on the fairways and the tee boxes definitely needed to be cut. The rough was cut very short and was not overseeded, and this was (as it normally is this time of the year in the desert) a nice contrast to the green fairways. I think that the bunkers are some of the best in Arizona. Nice sand with a good base underneath them. I think the boulders around the bunkers are a nice touch and are something that I have only seen here. I enjoy the routing of Victory because it has two very distinct nines. The front nine plays very close to the mountain and the views at holes #8 and #9 are some of my favorite in Phoenix, and the back nine is going to be running through a housing development. While this is normal for a course to have houses on both sides of the fairways, the views on the last 4 holes really make a nice ending to the round. Finally, hole #18 is a dramatic par 5 that forces you to carry water on your tee shot and then play to a green that sits in a small box canyon. Finally: With the construction of the pro shop and a small but very nice patio that overlooks the 18th green (this building is called the "Summit House"). Victory has created a beautiful spot to enjoy a drink and/or food. The view of a sunset and/or sunrise will bring you back to play this course many times.
