Played this morning with former colleagues now retired in Pacific Grove. Had not played here in sometime and happy to play it again. Course is in nice shape and glad we got out early ahead of tee box aeration. We did catch a few on back 9 but it was OK. Fairways played nicely. Greens putted and chipped great. Heard no complaints from those who found traps. But did from those who found the wonderful ice plant rough. A little cool to begin but sun came out quickly making the back 9 views terrific. Had a great bkfst after the round in the very nice restaurant. Only negative was the $89 green fee. No senior fee only standard fees and annual offers. You can walk for $65 but even that seems high to me for weekday golf. Oh well I don't play everyday so one round with old friends will do just fine.

Played Pacific Grove GC on Wednesday afternoon with JusGas88 for his first round back after a ten month layoff due to injury. The course was in fairly nice condition overall, though the greens were on the slow side. We tee’d off at 2:30 PM. Afternoons can get windy here as it’s right on the ocean as everyone knows. Wednesday was no exception, though the wind wasn’t too bad. Easily a 1 club wind and sometimes a full two club wind. Most of the greens are traditional back to front slope. They rolled on the slower side but did roll smooth. The odd thing was they were a tad firm and even good approach shots didn’t check up.

Fairways were in very nice condition. Lush throughout but still offerred good roll out. Front nine is tight, placing a premium on accuracy, while the back nine fairways widen up some, so you can grip and rip it. Back nine also has unobstructed views of the ocean which is right across the street. Rough wasn’t too penal, thick enough to stop your ball from rolling but manageable to hit from.

Tee boxes were all in decent shape. Level and good coverage throughout. Even the short Par 3’s had good enough coverage amongst the divots to get a clean area to place your ball on. I don’t remember being in any sand traps. POP was …. Well that’s a different topic but we had two slow groups in front of us. One was a foursome of younger guys (20’s) in which two were just learning (sharing clubs). Given their experience they weren’t too bad but yes they fell behind. Here’s the thing. They were out mid week late afternoon so it wasn’t like they were taking prime tee slots and holding people up. We were all beginners at one point so I guess the afternoon during mid week is the best time to get out on the course. Once we got around them at the turn we had about 3 holes of clear sailing. Then we caught up to the next slow player(s). It was an older gentleman who was out with his (high school aged) grandson. The guy had bad arthritis and could barely walk (it was painfully slow), but man he could swing a club!! Gotta be patient with the elderly. We will all be there someday (hopefully).

All in all it was an enjoyable walk in nice enough weather to keep the sweatshirt off until about the 16th hole.

This place is just good for the soul. We did the early bird back 9 special. Course is in good shape. Back 9 right on the water. Greens rolled well. Love the ocean breeze, smell and scenery on every hole. This course will renew your love for golf. Maybe the worst practice range you've even seen, which only adds to the charm. Highly recommend.

Monterey Golf Trip: 10/6 to 10/8 Day #1 - Course #4 - Pacific Grove This was the last golf course of our trip. We played at 8:30 am on SAT 10/8. It was a super foggy start to the day. Front 9 is what it is. Greens were wet and damp. Running at 8/9. Fairways had absolutely no roll and sand was wet and compact. Tee boxes were a little beat up. Back 9, the greens dried out and firmed up. Ocean views amazing on the back 9. A super busy restaurant and bar here. Lots of locals just come here for the food. Large marshmallow chocolate chip cookies at the turn were amazing. We saw more wildlife here than at the Pebble Beach courses. A great way to finish our golf trip!

I was in the area after my bike ride today and decided to play an afternoon round. Easy course to walk and short enough, I knew I could manage with only my irons. I was pleasantly surprised at how green and lush the fairways were. Especially given the recent heat wave. Sure there were a few thin/brown spots throughout the course, but overall the fairways were in great shape.

Greens were a little shaggy and bumpy. Mainly because it was late afternoon and they were showing signs of all the recent footprints. Other than that, I'd say they looked very healthy and are probably 95% healed from recent aeration. I'd say that a morning round would see the greens rolling smooth.

Tee boxes were ok. A few of the shorter par 3's had some divot damage but overall nothing big. Sand traps looked pretty nice. I avoided them but watching others play out of the bunkers, I saw plenty of sand flying.

with the weather so gorgeous and the course in the current very nice condition, I'm happy I got out and hit a few. it's a no brainer for a recommendation.

I wish I would have discovered Pacific Grove years ago, as it would have been made a part of the Pebble Beach golf trip rotation. So glad that I gave it a try this time to the area. We did the back 9 special and it was spectacular. Great conditions, atmosphere layout, scenery, and service. Such a good vibe at this place. Pretty awful practice area, but it serves it's purpose, which is to just get loose. Greens were really good. Scenery, wildlife, and ambience were surreal. Just a great walk through nature while playing golf. Will play this course every time I make the trip to the area.

I played Pacific Grove on Sunday 3/6/22 with a late morning/early afternoon tee time. Course was busy as is expected on a weekend. POP was right at about 4 hours with waiting on just about every shot. Course is in nice condition overall. Greens are small and fairly docile at PG. They rolled smooth for the most part with only the occasional foot traffic in the afternoon causing some hops and skips.

Most of the fairways were decently lush. A little thin but nothing major. The 12th fairway had some browning areas throughout that may be caused by the salt water overspray as there has been a lot of wind and huge waves the last few weeks.

Most tee boxes were level with ample coverage.

Worth noting is that the conditions were similar between the front and back nines. Customer service was great. The pro shop at PG is tiny with just a few clothing items and a counter. With ocean views galore, PG is a fun course that is super easy to walk. It has a few quirky opening holes but that just adds to the charm. It’s still reasonable to play, even on weekend prime time.

A tale of 2 nines. Everyone talks about the difference in layout and views between the front and back nine. Well today the conditions were as different as night and day between the front and back.

Front nine, the greens were bumpy and slow. The back nine they were smooth and rolled at a medium- fast pace. Fairways on the front were decent. Mainly lush and green with a few thin spots. Back side the fairways were very lush and a deep emerald green.

Tee boxes on the front were ok at best. Some uneven and several with multiple divots. Back nine was much better with most boxes level and with good coverage

San traps were decent all around. Pace of play was on the slow side, over 4.5!hrs.

Weather was perfect today. Whereas prior reviews, I’d say skip it because of poor conditions,
I’m pleased to say it’s now worth the cost of entry. Both for conditions and for the great views

Played yesterday. Very glad to see the previous review before we played. We knew exactly what we would be facing. Though it rated a 5.5 we still wanted to play. It is a unique course and one that is really fun to walk. We found the conditions as stated but still enjoyed the beautiful day on the course. Totally agree with the comment on customer service. And while it is not PB, the views of the ocean are IMO just wonderful. And it is a recommended play when in the area.
