A day after getting my brains beat out at Bayonet/Blackhorse, I played Rancho Canada West on 8/2/2008. This is a fun course. I was paired with two other guys, neither of whom had played the course before. This is a very enjoyable course. There are some tree-lined narrow fairways, there are some wide open areas. There are straightforward par 4's, there are severe dogleg par 4's. There's water, both seen and hidden. The greens were fantastic. Maybe the best I've ever putted. They were fast, but soft enough to hold shots on approaches. They rolled true and smooth. This is a "grip it and rip it" combined with "wow, gotta think about this shot" type of course. The layout is fun. Yardage books would have helped, there is no GPS in the carts, and the teebox signs just sort of hint at what potential trouble you can get into around the corner. There are a number of blind shots, but they're makeable blind shots. The staff was friendly and helpful. Did I mention the greens? . . They're probably the best I've ever putted! . . The course is not extraordinarily difficult, but it will test you. And you'll have fun! while playing the West course. If I lived in the area . . I'd play this course again without any hesitation.

Played here on July 25, 2007. This course has a reputation in the area as a good value at $70. Coming from SoCal, I did have a little sticker shock when inquiring about greens fees. I suppose it is all relative, as Pebble Beach runs about $480. For that $70, I had a great experience at a lush, manicured golf course in a forested area. Greens, fairways, rough and traps were in excellent condition. I would come here again.

The fairways were a bit wet throughout the West Course. the greens were in decent shape for this time of the year.
