Hard to believe there are no posts since I was here last year. Anyway, S Bay is in tip-top shape and I enjoyed it MUCH more than last year mainly because I knew what I was getting into (a range finder helped). Picturesque course, breaking greens ... difficult but manageable (get a yardage book, $10). And the resort is nice with all the Pebble Beach ammenities. Was it Douglas McArthur who said 'I shall return' ... or was that Ronald Regan:)

Okay, when you golf on the peninsula paying the big bucks for the best courses in California, you want a golf experience that will produce great memories. In that regard, Spanish Bay delivers. The views of the rugged Monterey coastline as a backdrop to the rolling Links style course are incredible to say the least. The layout at SB, well, it's target golf to the max. Got to use a yardage book, there's no GPS. And you must trust your swing or you're in the envirmental areas surrounding most holes. The front nine crawls along the coast and may be one of most beautiful nine holes I've ever seen. The back jumps up through the Monterey 'hood ... and read previous postings which are all accurate. MUST know where to stop your approach shots on most all greens or a 3-putt awaits.

It was a GREAT day Sunday to play golf. Got out for my Birthday with their package deal for 3 day/2night stay package. Whilst wife was out prettying herself I was with my BIL (Brother-in-Law) tearing up the courses. Today was Spanish Bay. Links style course. Pace of place was satisfactory. Was suprised that the Marshalls heard my overly loud comment about the group ahead being way too slow (we were just a twosome following a foursome but they were 1 to 1 1/2 hole behind the other group). They (the marshalls are plugged in with little ear wigs and could communicate throughout the course. ) They apologized for the slow play and managed to get the group ahead to play a little faster. Greens rolled VERY true. If you like crazy type puts with swinging elevations and radical breaks this course could be for you. Fairways were IMMACULATE. Bunkers well it was more compacted sand but very playable. Tee Boxes were great. Saw the Beer Guy/Cart several times along course. Course conditions were fabulous -- cool 65-70 with sun and little wind. I have photos and will be posting them for Johnny later in the week. Just need to remember to bring my camera to work and upload them. All Hi-res shots.

Played 8/14 am. There's a good reason Golf Mag just listed this course in the Top 100 you can play (42). It really is a gorgeous test of golfing ability. Fairways were immaculate, few divots, greens were smooth and true (and fortunately not lightning fast). Pins were set up so any ball within 10-12 ft of the hole left a relatively flat putt, but if you don't get it close, it's another story. Large tiers and drastic slopes make it tough. Tee boxes looked like fairway (or muni greens). Beautiful setting. Be sure and get a yardage guide, and play the appropriate tees for your ability, or you WILL be sorry. If you have a group, join Del Monte's Duke's Club to get discounted rates here and at Spyglass.

Plaed on 05/27. Very beautiful, small greens although not as small as Pebble. Very very undulating greens. Did I mention the have very undulating greens? A lot of beatiful holes along the ocean, and a couple of real pretty holes along the back side of the resort. Bunkers were very nice. Very tight track. Wind was blowing about 30 miles per hour, and made this course almost impossible. I do not know if I will play this course again. Would much rather pay 450 to play Pebble.

Want to hit great shots and get totally screwed? Want to play on minature golf greens? Then play Spanish Bay. This course is not that bad, but considering the price, the are a lot better courses for your money in Monterey.

The green was immaculate. We played at 12:40pm and ended our game around 4:40pm. Hearing the bagpipe at the final hole made the green fee worth every bit of it. We were able to see deers in the few holes that didn't have ocean views. The fairway was also immaculate. 13 or 14 of the holes had awesome display of ocean views. With the recommendation of the starter I played off the gold tees. It was still difficult and the 30 mph wind didn't help also. I definitely enjoyed the great service.

This was my 2nd time out to this course in a tourney and I figured I'd score better due to course knowledge but that went by the wayside after the first 9 holes. Course was in impecabble condition throughout although the fairways were a tad thin to my liking although they were very green. It felt better to be hitting out of the rough as it let your ball sit up more (suits my game better). Beautiful scenery throughout the course and deers to boot as well although there was quite a foul smell almost the entire round of rotten eggs or something blowing in off the ocean. It was rather cold as well and windy yesterday which also added to the overall challenge.

Course is challenging on most holes as there are narrow fairways that are surrounded by environmentally protected areas. Great sand and well protected, ultra fast, very undulated greens that did hold pretty well on approach shots. Make sure you club up 1 on your shots as the thick air tends to lessen the distance on your shots.

Overall, a must play course that will definitely humble you. I didn't have to pay for this round but those who can afford it should play it for the overall "feeling" that you get from the Clubhouse til the 18th hole. The Pebble Bch car show was also rather nice with plenty of Ferrari's, Lamborghini's, Aston Martins etc... rolling around the 17 mile drive.
