After playing the best golf of my life the last couple months (last 3 rounds were a 73, 71 and 74) and dropping my index to the lowest its been since 2006-2007 I was complete garbage today--worst round in 4 years. Was going to play Rustic but was met with 40-50mph winds today(course was closed) so headed out with buddies to Soule Park in Ojai--its was just a weird day all together--my buddy injured his wrist on the range bad and could not play--little windy but not to bad at all. Started out by making a bird on hole 1--doubled #6 and then went bogey, bogey, par to shoot a 39 on the front. The back was a 9 to forget, bogeyed 10, tripled 11 going OB on my 2nd shot, OB on #12 off the tee made quad there--finished the back with a 48---for a 87--completely humbled...

It's amazing to me that no matter how good, bad or average a player you are, these types of moments are inescapable in golf. A scratch golfer gets just as frustrated and confounded by the game (admittedly not as often) as a 25 handicap who knows it's going to be 'one of those days' when they pencil in a triple and a quad after the first two holes. I suppose that offers a little solace to those of us non-scratch players who likely feel that humbling at least a few times every round.

The humbling 87 that you shot, a score which I matched on Sunday, was actually a pretty good round for me at Rancho Park. But the humbling came on the back nine after shooting a nice 41 on the front when I could not buy a par on the back nine. Even three-putted after my GIR on 18 to add insult to (ego) injury. A frustrating 46 but at the end of the day, I'm still at a stage when breaking 90 on any proper 18 feels pretty good. But I'm hoping to reach that level where an 87 is my worst round for a long time. For a lot of us that sounds dreamy. The three rounds before that though were awesome.

Had a nice bounce back round today at Olivas from the tips with a 73. Played with Brian who is a PGA teaching professional and we flew around an empty Olivas. People must be avoiding the surrounding areas due to the fires. Birdies on #3 and #18 and bogeys on #8, #10 3 putting from the fringe and #13 which is just a hard dang hole from the tips.

Played Palm Desert Resort CC on Wednesday! Was very surprised at how nice the course was. Lush and green and beautiful. Greens were a bit slow and after the greens at La Costa I kept leaving putts short. Even after 17 holes I left my birdie putt way short and ended with a 3 putt bogey! Started with a 5 footer for birdie I left short but got my par. Shot 42 on the front then lost my short game and shot 48 on the back for a 90! Really enjoyed the course and was very surprised to see a Billy Casper course looking so good. Not sure how long they have managed it but I hope it stays as nice as it is now!

Had sub-80 in view playing the blues at Encino on Saturday but one ridiculously poor blowup hole (long par 4 7th) and a late, cold putter sunk those dreams and made me settle for an 85 (adjusted to 84). The quad was just a cluster of badness by starting left into the trees off the tee, then bad luck on the recovery back behind another tree, then safety, then a duff, then another duff, then on and two-putt. But kept going strong after that until a series of final putts on 15-17 ruined me. Par 3 15th, 211 yards, hit my 4H to within four feet - miss the birdie putt. Par 4 16th, front pin, go long and have a 60ft lag putt that I put within 5ft - miss the par putt. Par 3 17th, 206 yards, 4H again and put the ball on the green above the pin 10ft, three putt for bogey. Then all that putting exasperation got in my head off the tee on 18, but I recovered well enough to just miss another par putt and settle for bogey again. Rough.

Was in Murietta yesterday so I decided to get in a round at Temecula Creek. I had never played it before but it had high ratings. Things started rough. The range ball machine was empty and it left a number of us standing waiting for range balls. Did some putting in the mean time and was amazed at the speed of the greens. Finally got range balls and just couldn't get comfortable. I was a single so they said they would pair me with someone as soon as possible. I went up to the starter and waited a while. He called a group to the first tee and I saw it was a three some. I asked when he thought I would be able to get out and after trying to find me on the tee sheet told me to join the 3some he just sent out. So far organized is not a description that comes to mind. Standing on the first tee I look down the fairway to see a tractor spraying the fairway green. I assume its a seed mix but it still makes your ball change color.
Started on the Creek and struggled to an awful 53. Course was brown but playable. Then we played the Oaks. Right away it was lusher and greener. Greens were just as fast. After starting with a 1 putt triple I made my first par of the day. Ended up with 3 including 18 to shoot 46 and prevent a triple digit score.
My new clubs showed up today! Glad I wasn't playing those and scoring that bad. Rams Hill will be the maiden run for them!
