I would appreciate any tips regarding iron play out of the fairway. If I do get a clean hit it seems my ball goes way to high in the air and lacking on distance. In general I hit better out of the rough especially with a 3W or hybrid. For some reason I just dread playing out of the fairway and even more so pulling an iron out of the bag unless it is a 9I which I have no issues with.

It's tough to say without seeing your swing, but a few things I could think of is playing the ball too far up in your stance, or you could be dipping your front shoulder too deep, causing an upward motion on your downswing. Try moving the ball back in your stance, ideally you try and play your pitching wedge close to the middle of your stance, and gradually move the ball forward as you increase in club.

Also, it could all be mental. Like a case of the yips, sometimes it's what's going on between the ears rather than what's going on elsewhere.

If I had to guess without seeing your swing, I'd say you're flipping at the ball (the clubhead is passing your hands prior to impact). But please, please don't take my word for it. Go see a qualified professional, preferably one who teaches outdoors on grass.
