Ooh, does this mean Matt and Greg will be using our Guru round this weekend at Black Gold for GK Cup action? If so, I would love to get in a practice match play round with Gary to make it interesting!

The first round match between kviser and t8fish is in the books.

kviser defeats t8fish in the first playoff hole.

We played Hansen Dam today at 1:04 p.m. playing the white tees. t8 gave me one stroke (hole 9), but I did win that one outright.

Hole 1: t8 has a little trouble down the right hand rough, hits his second short, then blades one over. kviser hits fairway, green, two-putts. kviser 1-up.
Hole 2 t8 blasts one down the middle, hits his second on the front. I hit my tee shot right, then left, then on in reg. t8 yips his first putt and we end up pushing.
Hole 3: we both find a little trouble right side off the tee, then end up pushing.
Hole 4: we both save par 3 with good chips and one putts.
Hole 5: t8 blasts another good drive, but yanks the second left. I go left, then left, then proceed to drop one from 34 yards! Boom, kviser 2-up.
Hole 6: long par 5, t8 yanks his drive left and has to punch out. I blast a good drive and second shot. My third ends up close to the pin, but I could not convert the birdie. It was not needed as t8 makes a bogie to my par. kviser 3-up.
Hole 7: Par 3 off the hill. t8 hits pin high left side, just off, then chips past and makes par. I yank my tee shot right, chip on, then two putt. t8 wins and takes it back to kviser 2-up.
Hole 8: We both hit into the Black Forest on the left, but I cannot locate my ball. Not going back due to the group waiting on the tee, I drop and hit onto the green in 3. t8 hits his second to the right of the green and it trails down a long slope. t8 gets on in 3 and we both two putt for bogies. kviser 2-up.
Hole 9: Long par 4. Good tee shots, but t8's second is a squibber to the right, while I hit up near the green. I convert for par, and t8 bogies. kv 3-up.
Hole 10: t8 gets one back with a nice par, while I struggle up the slope and 3-putt for double. kviser 2-up.
Hole 11: t8 gets another par while I proceed to play pachinko with the tree on the right side of the green. kv 1-up.
Hole 12: Long par 5; t8 and I push again. kviser 1-up
Hole 13: t8 hits his tee shot right; I hit a good shot in the fairway, then hit a 9-iron close to the pin from 141 yards. I missed birdie, but t8 bogied after hitting his second shot poorly, then missed to the left. kviser 2-up.
Hole 14: We both make the green in regulation, but I 3-putt for bogie, while t8 makes a good 10 footer for par. kviser 1-up.
Hole 15: short par 3; t8 missed short left, chipped on and two putted for bogie, while I made the green and two putt for par. kviser 2-up.
Hole 16: the only lake on the course should not come into play, except not for me! I make double and t8 makes par. kviser 1-up.
Hole 17: long par 3 into the wind; t8 hits a good shot that looks like it may go in. He's 15 feet away, while I chip on then 2 putt for bogie. t8 makes birdie and we go into 18 all square.
Hole 18: I yank my tee shot left and have to punch out to the right side, while t8 blasts his tee shot up the middle. However his second is short of the green and my third is close to the pin. We both two putt for bogie.
Playoff Hole 12: Par 5; t8 pulls his tee shot left, hits a nice second, but pulls his approach left and ends up in the worst spot between the 3 palm trees. He chops down on it backward, but comes up short of the green. Chips past then two putts. I hit my second to the right, but still in the fairway. My third is a solid lob wedge to the middle and my birdie attempt stops inches from the cup for the easy tap in par and the win.

Big heartfelt thanks to t8fish for setting up the round and keeping me on my toes the whole way.

Kevin, thanks for keeping track and doing the recap in great detail. My only correction being that I made that 15 footer on 17 for bird. I gotta claim that since they're rare for me.

Kevin was excellent company and deserved the win. I made some shots but generally haven't had a consistent feel for my swing lately. I was pleased to push him to an extra hole but didn't feel I was ever in sufficient control to justify a win. Kevin usually had to unravel a bit for me to claim hole. His short irons and pitching are particularly consistant and deadly. In addition to the chip in on 5, which was a stunner, he usually left his shorter irons and pitches in threatening positions. Several were recovery shots.

I'm glad Kevin was available on short notice and take some satisfaction in being the pairing to get the ball rolling (so to speak.) As a fellow mid-handicapper, I wish him the best of luck through the brackets and I'm rooting for him.

So for the rest of you, get on out and get this thing done.

Yes, how could I forget your birdie? You bombed it in while one of our two playing partners was hitting out of turn while you were over your putt and the other guy was pawing at a twig with the head of his putter in your periferal vision. That was an amazing display of concentration!

I made the correction above.
