The topic line suggests some insight but let me explain. I'm talking the day in which you went out to play a nice round but came home shaking your head because the course seemed to take away any opportunity for birdies, scoring par was a blessing (including your handicap's par), and every green seemed to be running around a stimp score expected from a US Open.

A few courses I can think of that played very difficult:

Verrado Golf Course (Buckeye, AZ) -- longest rough I've seen with very complex greens.

Talking Stick, North Course (Scottsdale, AZ) --the links layout plays very tough when heat bakes the greens and fairways.

TPC Scottsdale, Stadium (Scottsdale, AZ) --played in August and the greens were true but running at least a 12.5, not difficult layout but you appreciate the pros tearing it up when you play it yourself!

Superstition Springs GC (Mesa, AZ) -- This use to be a QSchool stop and the difficulty still shows. Long par 3's with narrow landing area par 4's cause a long day.

These are a few I've played, anyone else played some brutal tests not only on the mental but ball-stiking side? Want to play some tough layouts this summer!

Quintero. I've played Verrado and Stadium, and Quintero is significantly more difficult. Verrado is my favorite in the area though, I could play there every day.

Quintero - the Par 3s alone make me want to quit golf.

Emerald Canyon in Parker can be a beast when you play the tips and the greens are running fast. Many holes are technically pretty benign, but the OB everywhere and the elevation changes on the canyon holes may have you second-guessing club selection quite a bit. Not to mention the monster that is the par 4 6th.

Laughlin Ranch Golf Club in Bullhead City is a beast. 7155 yards 73.6/143

Bullhead City, barely second to Death Valley is the hottest place in North America.

Its a beautiful course and one I might be doing a GK Plays in November or December.

For me it's Las Sendas. I haven't played it in a long time, but I remeber it is tough.
Used to play the blacks (not the tips) at 6600 yards with a slope rating of 140 then moved down one and played at 6400 yards with a slope of 135
I mostly remember the greens having a lot of undulation with some tight fairways.

Have only played a handful of courses in Arizona and while I'll agree that Superstition Springs can be a beast, I found Tucson's La Paloma the most frustrating. Typical Nicklaus design from that era, the greens were the great equalizer; undulating, requiring pin-point accuracy, and difficult to read. I recall playing all 27 holes one day and shooting 38-38-38. Ball striking from tee to green couldn't have been better yet I was unable to convert anything with the flat stick...and I've always been able to putt. Still, I really enjoyed the course and would play there again if given the opportunity.

Vistoso (72.1/147/6954) & Arizona National (72.5/143/6785) in Tucson are tough tracks...

The goal is long and straight! But on the many times I cannot seem to hit them straight, I at least want to hit them long!

Many years ago I played the original course at Gold Canyon (which is now parts of both courses) and it was very, very difficult for me. I remember one elevated green with bunkers on both sides, and I kept going from bunker to bunker across the green. Nearly impossible to get it to stop.

Not sure if I agree that Las Sendas is difficult, but I didn't like it at all. Felt like way too many holes had dumb blind shots, and seemingly good shots weren't rewarded on those. So yeah, maybe it is difficult, but in a bad way, not a good way.
