Ok - so we are playing the 3rd hole of PVGC (our 16th hole of the day) today around 4pm and it's 190 into a 2 club wind. We all his decent shots on, or around the green and begin our drive to the green. I'm in the following cart and, as we approach halfway, a strange noise hits my ears. Others in my group said they thought it was firecrackers or a golf ball on a cart path but I think it sound like wood rubbing or cracking in the nearby trees. A bit farther on it get louder and more frantic and now I recognize the sound as that sound I've heard on TV after a lumberjack cuts a tree and before it hits the ground.

The guy I'm paired with stops the cart and says "What do you think that noise is...."

The noise is really loud now and is scaring me.

"Don't stop! Go!!!" I yell at him.

Dan (the cart driver) hits the gas pedal on our cart and it lurches forward.

I hear a loud "CRACK" and look across the driver toward the nearby trees and see a tree starting to fall.

It's going to be close.

I brace for impact as the tree falls across the cart path. The tree lands and the roof of the cart hasn't caved in so I think we just missed it but we look behind us and see that headcover, and driver head, along with 16inches of driver shaft were snapped off Dans driver and lay amongst the edge most pine branches . So enough of the tree hit enough of our cart to at least cause that much damage in a split second.

When we call the clubhouse and they come out (after we finish the hole - I mean - come on - we're golfers) PVGC nicely offers to take care of Dan's broken driver. I was hoping they would also offer to buy me new underwear but they didn't ask and I didn't want to say......

Dang that was a close call or near miss as we call them in construction. Glad to hear everyone, except the driver, got away to play another day!

Was it a Eucalyptus? In humid weather they get heavy with moisture a limbs can fall off. I saw a fire start right in front me from a limb falling and downing power lines. Also, on the fourth tee box at Balboa Park GC one almost fell on old Jesse Martinez (God bless his soul and RIP not from the tree, years later). That case was similar to what you described, I heard the limb starting to rip away from the tree and pulled Jesse out of the way!

Perry! That sounds really d%mn scary! Especially the helplessness of being in the passenger seat and not having any control of the situation. That's completely insane - glad you're okay!

It's always a tense moment when you hear a tree start to fall. Haven't had it happen to me on the golf course, but have had it happen while cycling. Was descending through the Soquel Demo Forest at about 45+ mph when I heard a tree start to fall. Tree fell behind me as I went passed. Luckily the others were spaced far enough back to stop in time. The team car had to re-route as it was a big redwood tree that blocked the entire road (and then some). And here I thought golf was the safe sport.....
