It was just reported on the morning news that Carmel Mt. Ranch will be closing in Mid July. The report mentioned they could no longer afford the water costs. I have never played it since they did their big turf reduction. Will have to get out there before it's gone!

As an "associate member" through my SCGA membership, I got the email today. Sad that after a turf reduction they couldn't keep it open and that another golf course is being forced to shut down as the game tries to re-establish itself back its glory days. I too will try and get out before they close on July 8th.

Sad to hear- that's too bad. I wonder how many rounds they get a year in average... and how many they need in order to stay in business.

Bummer. Tod Leonard has an article with more details on the San Diego Union Tribune website.

Sad to hear. I worked as a "marshall" here my freshman year at San Diego State.

This is a visually attractive, challenging course with great potential. But it needs a lot of TLC and capital infusion from an owner with resources.

It would be great if the City of San Diego would step up and buy CMR and put some $$ into it, and turn it into a City-sponsored gem. Maybe it could even get into the Farmers rotation!

QUOTED  I wonder how many rounds they get a year in average..

When we were running it, they average 40,000 rounds a year.
Not sure what the figures now are but the main burden has been water cost then..

Sad to see this go.

There's no way San Diego buys the course unfortunately city is broke and they already have the Vineyards nearby.

North San Diego overbuilt courses during the boom and the water cost spike has been the deathblow. I believe 5 have closed now? Escondido county club, Stoneridge, San Luis Rey Downs, Carmel Highland.

I loved Carmel Mountain's layout but the image, clubhouse, and conditions were too mismatched and there was no central concept.

It was an overly boogie clubhouse plantation feel which is out of place with the adjacent homes. With no driving range, or amenities to support the social aspect of being a county club to support the local community.

Then the course is basically a desert track jammed between homes, with bad POP. The prices were very high and it wasn't a player friendly course. It was no wonder the concept never worked.

Those are my opinions.
