GK has been around since September 2002. Seen many golf courses come and go, mostly go.

Thought it might be fun talk about some of them. Rekindle some good memories you might have. If you got some bad memories to share that's fine too. All thoughts welcome.

So first up:

I had at least a couple rounds there at El Toro GC. One of them was with my dad and another pro and my bro. The experience was both good and bad. We love the course or at least I did. Anyway, it was a popular thing for PhilM at the time you get on around the greens with a wedge or an iron instead of using the putter and I was starting to become okay with it. I got up and down for many holes until at the back around 13th or 14th when I was on a back fringe with a back hole location and I was about to chip it but one of the pros said, "Putt it!" I did and it led to two more putts. Yep, you guessed it right, it was down hill from there on.

Wow, hard to believe it has been closed since 2006. I did play there quite a bit, it was great for a quick round. Easy course to score well on too. It was wild back when it first opened to the public as the military jets were still flying in and out. If you were on the par 4 next to the runway it was amazing to see.

I sure wish it was there again, I've been in a new office for a year, and this office would be 5 minutes from the course.

Maybe somebody from Irvine will chime in with current plans. Last I heard was that the master plan still had 27-36 holes planned for the Great Park area. I highly doubt it though - it seems that every square inch in Irvine is going for multi-unit housing.

Great Park Master Plan from 2009 had a golf course included in drawings, but I looked at the GPMP website earlier this year and there was no mention.

They may have eliminated it - at least for the time being.

Dave, that is what I had seen as well. However, I saw some article last year that mentioned the plan still had 18 holes (and possibly 36). It will never happen, but I'm still holding on to a slim little bit of hope.

At least we have a big faded orange balloon.

Fond memories of El Toro, played many rounds there. I remember there's a hole on the backside with the runway in the background and a bud who was a long hitter (like Johnny) pulled his tee ball that landed on that runway ... it must of rolled out a quarter of a mile or more, so we drove the cart out there to get it.
Good times.

IIRC, I want to say that was the par-5 12th, sngernz. (At only 3800 yards, the scorecard on this GK page is obviously not El Toro's scorecard.) I loved teeing off right next to the active runway with the roar of jets taking off just 100 yards or so away.

I played there many times, the majority of which were when it was military only. My friend's dad was a Lt. Colonel and a member of the men's club there, so I got many invites out there. I seem to remember both the 9th and 18th holes being very difficult, where I was very proud of myself to make par. I also remember delicious curly fries in the snack bar at extremely reasonable prices.

They also had a great practice area (and an adjacent short course) where I took my son frequently when he was about 3 years old.

Definitely a shame that it closed considering nothing has been built in its place.

QUOTED  (At only 3800 yards, the scorecard on this GK page is obviously not El Toro's scorecard.)

Thanks for the FYI on the scorecard Mark. Holy cow, that was off, and of course no way to find a current accurate one anymore, and no reason to update so I'm just going to pull that old wrong scorecard down.

Oh, WOW, at least for me. It converted to the old HTML cards I used to hard code when I first launched GK - talk about a personal flash back. And I believe that one is actually correct.
