I'm playing Sierra Lakes for the first time this weekend. I'm trying to get a flavor of the course from the reviews but I was hoping for any words of advice, strategy, etc.

So it looks like I'm also looking at that course to play this Saturday. Unfortunately, I've never played that course either, but the scorecard pretty much shows a lot together with the google map. It looks pretty straight forward according to slope & rating- it gives me the impression that it's probably not hilly if any.

Sierra Lakes is a fun play. The holes are right there in front of you with almost no surprises, and most greens don't have severe contouring.

Fairways are pretty generous. There is some elevation change across the property and some holes have some challenging up/down - holes playing to the north (uphill) are challenging and low-hcp rated (5, 7, 12, 16). There are scattered waste areas generally off the line of play, and scattered bunkers. Note that some of these are hidden from the tee. Holes with "where did that come from?!" include 8, 12, and 18.

I think a yardage card is available in the shop. Greens are usually slightly or significantly elevated and generally break to the SW, and going away from the mountains to the north can be very quick - alternately, putts going north are generally slower.

I've always found the course to be in pretty good condition.

There is some elevation change but not too drastic. Lots of variety in the layout. Have not played in a number of years. There is something about it that doesn't quite keep the flow. I find I lose focus after the turn. Not really boring but not as interesting. Worth playing for sure. Have fun!

Sierra Lakes is a fun track if the wind doesn't blow. As David said it is pretty straight forward.
If the wind blows out of Cajon pass look out it will turn into a beast.

Not to sound like a snob (or a cheapo), but I'm finding it difficult to justify an $85 rack rate on a course like this. There must be some type of local group/player membership of some kind to be able to play this course on a regular basis. Or maybe they're part of some tee time vendor.

I got the $69 rate on golfnow. I rarely pay more than $70 for a round so I'm glad I avoided the rack rate.

Sierra is part of the Donovan Daily network. Sign up on the Donovan site and they'll send you emails with discounts pretty much weekly.

Still on the high side for me on this course. Enjoy your round!
