Played Rancho Park today (review to come soon) and somewhere around the 5th or 6th hole I started getting a really sharp pain on the left side of my back in my rib cage during every swing. After doing a little research, I think I either pulled a muscle or maybe even fractured a rib. I just watched a Golf Channel video with a doctor explaining how Rory fractured a rib – your muscle pulls on the rib during the swing and that stress can cause a fracture, and it's quite common among golfers. It feels fine if I'm sitting still, but if I move in any way that compresses that area, or if I breathe deep, cough, etc. there is very sharp pain. The doctor on Golf Channel said it takes a minimum of four weeks to heal, so I think I've played my last round of 2018.

BTW, I'd never played the course and it was such a beautiful day, so I didn't want to quit. I played the rest of the round hitting a few extra clubs and swinging only with my arms, no body turn whatsoever. It felt like a preview of my game in 20 years or so.

Anybody have a rib cage golf injury before? I feel like I've experienced this same pain in previous rounds, but nowhere near the extent that it hurt today.

Ouch. Definitely sounds like your sidelined for a few weeks. I've fractured ribs before (not by playing golf) and there's not much you can do other rest. Yes, breathing hurts, coughing is painful and sneezing is just plain murderous. I did mine in Vegas and the ride home was torturous. Every time we hit a bump in the road it felt like someone hit me with a baseball bat.

4 weeks is optimal recovery time. It may take 6-8 weeks for full recovery. You should be able to start with putting and then chip shots after 2-3 weeks.

Lousy news, Mark … I've been there. I had an elbow crack two ribs when playing basketball years ago and the pain when sneezing, laughing or coughing was unbearable. Never sounded like such a bad injury before I had it myself. I can definitely see sitting out a month or two. You'll likely come out the better for it. The good part is when you're ready, we live in SoCal so you won't have to wait until spring to get back out there! Good luck with your recovery.

Not much you can do when it's the ribs but rest it... sorry to hear.

QUOTED  ... swinging only with my arms, no body turn whatsoever.

That's how I play... all arms.

I had what sounds like the same thing earlier in the year. It was my right side and every time I took a swing it knocked the wind out of me. It sucked so bad! I took about two months off (my putting got better) and it was cool.

Taking two months off was torture....

get thee to a doctor. No sense in asking the peanut gallery when all we know is peanut butter. Best advise... see your physician. You're gambling with your health. And you shouldn't gamble with your health.

Oh, dude!

I ripped my left side obliques on my approach to Hole 10 at River Ridge Lakes a number of years ago. I felt the ripping sensation as I came through the ball (took a deep divot from an awkward stance).

I continued to play with searing pain the rest of the round.

A few days later, my left side turned purple. It took a couple of weeks to recover, maybe longer.

What you describe with the breathing, coughing (it only hurts when I laugh) sounds like a broken rib. I've had one of those too, thanks to diving for a line drive in right center field during softball.

Good luck on your recovery, Mark!
