Is this old news?

PGA Tour stop in California desert loses title sponsor

Quite sure a few people here either attend or volunteer out at this event. I know it was popular when it was mostly a celeb-am and then went through unsettling times with George Lopez as the name. I thought Clinton and his foundation saw this as a good thing. Plus, hasn't Phil been the so-called ambassador for the tournament?

I hadn't heard this news until this thread, so thanks. Hope they find a sponsor for 2020.

Your boots on the ground in the desert is Larry Bohannan. He's been writing for the Desert Sun for as long as I can remember and covers golf like no other. A true journalist. You can trust his facts have been verified.

Historically, Bob Hope was able to book NFL players/coaches (Football season ended in late-December for most teams), MLB players (before going to spring training and his Hollywood celebs for the Pro-Am (just as Bing Crosby and Andy Williams were). But, as the NFL season grew longer, baseball players showed up to spring training sooner and those Hollywood celebs became less interested in golf, that era faded into the distant past. Many of you have noticed what we used to consider the 'silly season' (October, November & December) are more competitive golf. The west coast swing used to be a warm up before going south and getting into major season but, it's it the ground running mode for most PGATour Players as we get into January. The environment has changed.

The PGATour does a nice job at keeping these tournaments on their feet. The Desert Classic isn't going anywhere. It would help if one of the Major Networks would pick up the tournament but, it's been covered by the GolfChannel for many years now. Don't expect a change. There are still a TON of parties going on at PGAWest and LaQuinta during tournament week and the players love the interaction. That hasn't changed.
