| Thursday May 17, 2012 11:18 PM Looking for a little help fellas-
I'm planning a honeymoon for mid August and trying to figure out which area to stay. I'm pretty set on the VRBO condo/cottage option vs hotel. Problem is i'm unsure of which part of the island would be best. We are an active type of couple, but would say sandy beaches would be a good call (figure we can drive for activities). I've heard Poipu is good for beaches, but would like to avoid huge crowds especially families with young kids.
Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

| Friday May 18, 2012 6:44 AM Here I am to save the day!!!!
We stayed near the Princeville resort area which was great & perfect...
Problem? We spent a lot of time driving, DRIVING, driving, driving to get down to the PoiPu bay area and the Nicklaus course Kauai Lagoons which is a MUST PLAY!!!
Kauai Island is NOT an island that can be driven entirely around....TO see one section of the Island, we had to take a Snorkel/boat cruise to that side of the island which departs near the PoiPu bay area.
We talked about the NEXT time we ever stay on the Island to find a getaway condo/timeshare that was somewhere in between PRINCEVILLE & PoiPu bay.
I'm typing this from memory, I am "old"...I'll have to get back to you laters...Bottom line? I am a "Wind & Distance Consultant" which makes me an Experienced "Mathlete." "An individual who excels in mathematics to the point where he or she could make mathematics into a sport." |

| Sunday May 20, 2012 8:53 AM Kauai is probably my favorite place on earth. My wife and I honeymooned there 28 years ago and have since made trips where we stayed on the North , South and East sides of the island. Your decision comes down to what your plans are. We have stayed in Lihue and used that as basically just a place to sleep , as we were on the go everyday playing golf , going to the beach , hiking , etc. We have stayed in Poipu , which does seem to attract more of the families with kids. The last time we were there , there was a mix up with our condo booking so they gave us a huge beach house . We were there with our 4 kids and grand daughter and they didn't want to leave .
Hanalei Bay , in my opinion , is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Probably the best choice for a honeymoon . Although it's a long drive to the South side , as it's almost the end of the road to the North.
We have have split the time there and stayed on the North side half the trip and then gone to Poipu on the South. |

| Monday May 21, 2012 10:21 AM VRBO is a great way to go, good choice in Kauai!
Just a brief overview of the island, the north side (Princeville) is the wet or rainy area and the south (Poipu) is the dry or desert areas. Midway around Wailua/Lihue are local town.
Golf wasn't mentioned, but there's almost no bad choice, if you ask me.
Nightlife are more fun in the Wailua area, I think, if you're not in a hurry. . . we had fun there. It's nothing fancy-- no hype-- doesn't cost much.
We like the north side, and if you like a little trek n back pack, you could hike from the tip of the road up north-- beautiful views-- not too difficult-- not too far to get over to a really cool beach area. No kids/toddlers there, but that's a great whole day out there.
Oh, Costco is in the main town. . . (lol)
Have a great time!
EDIT note: When and if you trek up there, start at or a little before sunrise-- very cool!
[[Edited by noeldaof on Monday May 21, 2012 10:35 AM]] It's never the same each round-- even on the same course. The fun is all about making it better than the last time.
So many good people in golf-- just about everywhere I play. The fun is to go out and play with them.

How much are you looking to $pend? btw, FOOD on the Island is expensive and the GAS is a sticker shock too...so you gotta budget or be flexible and NOT spend to much...
We played the following over the years and the last time I was there (2007).

Thanks for all the help!
Now the important part, which golf courses are worth the dough to play on Kauai?
===========================================================
Without being hard core in golf course challenges and amenities and staying in a budget, it's easy to pick the following 2 courses:
Princeville - Makai has 27 holes of fun and inexpensive golfing.
If you're staying up north/Princeville area this is very convenient and not expensive at all. All three nines plays well including one of the par 3 to cross a deep water cliff-- will almost take you away from the game-- gorgeous!
Wailua - It has a municipal course that has been a site for U.S. Ams.
http://www.kauai.gov/default.aspx?tabid=66
This is a great course for the price. It's a muni, but plays well. This place actually encourages you to bring your cooler and a meal. Their restaurant/clubhouse may not be open.
If you are looking for a one time resorty type experience, I would do Poipu Bay golf course.
If you are looking for a challenging long day, play "Prince" golf course at Princeville (It's the adjacent course to the community and not the 3 nines).
But then when in Kauai, it's difficult to make a bad choice of course.
Enjoy your stay and trip. Congratulations to you and your bride.
Mahalo. It's never the same each round-- even on the same course. The fun is all about making it better than the last time.
