SURVEYOR REPORT Surveyor Report: 6/5/2004
It might be a bit of a hike from Los Angeles, but Yucaipa Valley is a course worthy of a good deal of praise. The layout is strong, though not overly different from many new mid-upscale public facilities being built in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. It is clear that this is a new golf course, as many holes are lined with trees that are still decades shy of maturity. The terrain is rolling and no hole feels particularly forced. Tee to green, this is good, challenging, and fun golf.

The biggest drawback to Yucaipa Valley is easily the surrounding housing and construction. Though the homes do not necessarily encroach on lines of play, they break up what would otherwise be beautiful mountain vistas, whether this be due to the homes or due to the tall driving range style fences used to shield the main road from wayward shots. Several holes are separated from homes and/or construction by more standard barriers, though at least the developers had the good sense to use attractive fencing (if such a statement is not an oxymoron).

The conditioning of the course is quite good. Other than a few wet spots, the course is in very nice condition. The greens are consistent and fairly quick, the fairways were mostly consistent as well, and the tee boxes were lush and level. In talking with a few people on the course, I was told that the fairways, tees, and greens are typically cut a bit tighter, and I can see evidence of this in the way the grass has grown out. Nonetheless, the playing surfaces were all very good, and people who play this course on a regular basis should consider themselves spoiled.

Yucaipa Valley is a solid layout with some very good features, excellent conditioning, and shortcomings related mostly to the surroundings rather than to the golf course itself. If you enjoy putting on true and quick greens, chipping from nice fairway lies, and you don't require an imposing and stately clubhouse (YVGC currently operates out of a glorified trailer-type setup) then give this place a try.
