Wow!! What a great course. Worth the drive. Stay and play packages available. Played with 2 of my sons and everything was perfect. We felt like we were the only ones out there! You will use every club in your bag. Lots of wildlife. Teed off at 11am and wind picked up in the afternoon but that was part of the challenge. Will play there again!!

Golfers playing Santa Barbara courses must be very easy graders. Based upon the rating (nearly 9!!) and the reviews I was expecting an immaculate, challenging course. Challeging and tough it was, but the condition was very mediocre. Fairways had mixtures of many different types of grass and many, many divot marks. Rough was non-existent, grass was about the same length as the fairway, except for the many bare spots. Tee boxes were lumpy with lots of divot marks, even on the par 4 and 5 holes. Cart paths are mostly dirt trails. Condition of front nine is passable, back nine is awful.

The course layout is very tough - many holes not only have blind tee shots, if you haven't played before you have no idea where to aim. Not much room around the greens, no bail areas just unplayable hazard area.

If this course was in the LA area, it would be in the middle of the pack. How it can have an 8+ rating is unbelieveable. I wonder if the other Central coast courses also suffer from this rating inflation?

One fo the best golf courses in California and in my top 20 in the USA. Nothing bad to say - this is an AWESOME course and hard. Played from the tips and only missed 1 fairway and still shot an 84. The greens are fast and tough to read, lots of fine breaks. Great condition and perfectly kept. Play this course but choose the right tee's or you are in for a long day. A Must Play...

Our favorite course - never disappoints. It's in spectacular condition, the staff is superb. If you are ever near the area, this is a must play. Be prepared to bundle up and battle the wind from time to time, but you will love the experience, whatever the conditions.

Play this course several times a week. It is always in great shape for a public course. Every day is like the first day you've played the course.

The grounds are well kept and the staff are the best. If you are ever in the area it's a must play day...

Beautiful course. Golf course was in excellent condition. Greens were very true and quick. Fairways were lush. My only complaint about anything here was the pin location on four holes that were located on the slope instead of just above it or below it. On one occasion resulted in a putt from below the hole being missed but rolling back in from above. Otherwise very good experience.

What a treat and a major test at the same time! If you think you are on your game just come on out and give La P a run. Played last week, 10/1/07, and as usual it was in great condition! The greens are rolling just great and the fairways look wonderful. The wood wall project on #3 is finished and is a vast visual improvement. Stacy and Marcus took great care of the group I brought. Worth every penny!

We played this course on Wednesday, 10-10 on our first annual golf and wine trip to central California. We also played Monarch Dunes, Hunter Ranch, and Cypress Ridge (see those reviews). We all agreed that we liked La Purisima the best of all the courses we played. Challenging layout, beautifully conditioned with hardly any ballmarks--it was like nobody played the course. No houses on the course, beautiful scenery, and very little road noise made this the perfect course to end the trip.

Second time at La Purisima and got some wind to make a difficult course more difficult. It helps to have some knowledge of the course though. Yes, it's in fine condition and the green fees are more than fair. Worth the drive if you and some buddies want to make a day of it. Not every hole is as unforgiving as some postings mention, but it's true that you need to be straight on most shots or trouble awaits.

Anytime you want to be humbled, try a round here. Really feeling masochistic? Play in the afternoon wind. Don't get me wrong, course conditions are near perfect, but this course is by far one of the toughest I have ever seen. Every single shot will test you. There are almost no bailout opportunities, either hit it straight or take it home.

Played 6/23 at 10:30 am. This track was one of the best I have ever played and I have been playing golf for 16 years. The conditions were great. The course was hard but fair-good shots rewarded bad shots punished. The wind plays a huge role in the challenge of the golf course- wind on #17 played dead into my face and for a 147 yd hole downhill hit a club that goes 160 and came up 30 yrds short because the ball got caught in the wind. A bit of course knowledge goes a long way; if you are coming up for the first time see if they will pair you up with someone who is a regular it will save you strokes. Overall worth the trip and I will definately be back sooner than later.

Played for first time on Sat 6/23(twilight). Course was one of the toughest that I have played in California. Played from the tips and the 75.6 rating from the blacks is well deserved. We had about a 15-20 mph wind which played into our faces on #6 and #7 and swirled on most holes for most of the day. Three out of the four par 5's you must play smart with an iron for your second shot even if you bomb the ball off of the tee. I made birdie on #10(1 handicap) which started my back off well. I'll take my 76 and run for the hills on this course after reading all of the hype. #1 and #2 are tricky holes to start off on as #1 narrows at the green and #2 if you have not played course you do not know how much room you have to drive down to. If you are walking this course and have not played it before I would think that you should purchase a yardage/map book to know where you are going( a good workout if you are walking). #17(par 3) is one of the smallest targets/green I have ever seen. And #14 (short par 4) is a very narrow landing area even with an iron off of the tee.

As far as the course conditions were concerned, the greens felt spongy on the soft spikes and held irons pretty well and putted quick and true(very nice greens). Fairways were great on some holes and just above average on others. Alot of tee boxes need to be leveled and overall it looks like the course needed some more water on it. I felt that the $40.00 twilight price was a good bargain. Beautiful area to play golf. Will be back to play again.

Played both La Pursima and Sandpiper on a golf trip to SB on June 8 & 9... Was very intimidated by the "3rd toughest course in CA" statement on website... a great layout with some difficult greens and great condition... wind does definitely pick up in the afternoon making it more difficult... but overall not as tough as noted.. sandpiper was much more difficult... but for $77 on weekend.. worth the fee if ur up in the lompoc area.... will be back (hopefully) soon..

We drove up to Lompoc to play La Purisima. What a course!!! We got off at 7:00 am....saw some deer on #10 and #12. I went 44 on the back(played it first) with a triple bogey on the easist hole #13 and 2 doubles(ouch). Then 38 on the front, from the back (black) tees. The course is rated 143 from the tips. The rolling terrain, oak trees, lay of the course, conditions, greens, fairways tees, wildlife, hospitality, bunkers, design, and beauty of this course are among the greatest I have ever seen.(playing for 25 years!) I can hardly wait to get back!! This course is among my top 5 of all time.
THANK YOU LA PURISIMA.

Greens are rolling true, but surprisingly slower than at any time in recent memory. Bunkers are really beginning to reflect the work of the superintendent over the past 4 months. Will be glad when the hardscaping is completed on 3; it's a bit unsightly right now. Even in a 20+ mph wind, it's worth a drive any day of the week.

I think the staff are feeling like they can't do anything wrong. The great complements are because of the conditions and design of the course. I just got a couple of days off and called to see if there were any tournaments this week and was blown off like they don't want any more play. I just wanted to walk on as a single for Thursday and Friday.
Let's see, I play La Purisima about six or seven times a year. With motel and green fees and breakfast or lunch at the cafe, which is always great by the the way, its about $150.00+ per day. I've always wrote great things about this course here on greenskeeper but WOW I'm hurt. Nothing pleases me more then 36 holes at La Purisima but the staff better get it together.

Played sat/sun 4/14-15. i'm telling you, i love this place. anyways.. sat was not too windy. tee off at 9, calm until 11:30. then the wind picked up, but not too bad. it was off and on, and under 15 mph. really lucked out. Sunday... constant 25 mph winds from the get go. course is in excellent shape. Greens are fast and diabolical. fairways are in great shape. bunkers a bit soft. had buried lies quite a bit. it definitely helps to know the course when it comes to scoring. Definitely a must play, but tee off early, less chance of wind on the front nine. I love this course.

Played on Tuesday the 10th of April. Purisima has always been one of, if not my favorite, course in the U.S. As usual, the course was in very good condition. Two complaints: 1. the tee boxes are now becoming crowned due to the years of filling divots and reseeding. They need shaved. 2. The new management/personnel are unfriendly and generally ignorant to their own ignorance. Their new director of teaching, couldn't be a more unfriendly person to us. We complained about something in particular to him and he swiped aside our complaint like we weren't worth his time. He had the opportunity to make things better regarding our complaint, a simple solution it would have been, but it never even entered his mind. We were treated in a very unfriendly manner. This is not the La Purisima I have come to love.

The course is still in great shape and it is a fabulous track. I'll be back no doubt, but rest assured, I'll be spending more time and $$ up at Monarch Dunes.

Recent rain has improved course conditions from great to WOW. Water levels in the ponds are down to cut back the reeds. This is a good thing since heighth on #2 was actually impeding the view of the green on the second shot.

If you haven't played La Purisima, you must. If you have, now is a particularly good time.

Played on Friday, 1/12. I was fortunate to play with a few locals, who said the very breezy day that I would categorize as a 2-club wind as a calm day at the course.

Overall, the course design and layout is nearly a golfer's dream. Most of the fairway are wide and far, but every now and then, a hole would cause you to play strategic, target golf. The greens were super fast and having a shelf or two that made proper placement of the approach shot quite critical. Additionally, a putt or two rolled off the green from a short pitch as there was times no real fringe to speak of. Local knowledge is a must for a couple of holes where the appearances are deceiving.

We played on a day the the temp never got about 55 and was quite windy(January 12th) Really enjoyed it, excellent condition tee to green-those darn greens! Be closer then 30 feet or expect a 3 putt! I think it's a great layout. Plenty of room in the fairways, but you still have to place the ball on many holes. Tough par 5's, especially the greens. Watch the 15th hole, may be a lay-up for many players short of the trap you see, or you need to go just right of it about 260 max. Many great holes, great scenery. 17 is a round breaker if you are not careful, no room for error when it's windy. I would rank this in my top 5 along with We-Ko-Pa, Eagle Ridge, The Devil's Paintbrush, and Hunter's Pointe in Canada. It's a must play.

I finally got up to LP to play after having had to cancel many times. It's a great course. Local knowledge is easily worth 3-4 strokes per round, so expect a higher score first time around. Expect lots of elevation changes (all the par 3's play at least 1 club down hill) and some blind tee shots. The greens are really nice, perhaps the nicest I've seen on a SoCal public course. Anything left above the hole is almost an automatic 3 putt. A long (but easy) drive from LA, but highly recommended. Great conditions.

Played on 11/10 with 3 other frinds for the first time. Fairways and greens in great shape. Greens very fast - which I like- but some cups were positioned in middle of slope so either sink it or watch it roll 10-15 feet past. I hate that a good lag putt that should stop within a foot keeps rolling way past because of a ridiculous hole placement. Also for $94 you would expect GPS on carts - I play $40 courses that have GPS. Too much time wasted hunting for sprinkler heads and guessing yardages when you are off the fairway.

Played today 11/09 as a twosome for the first time. It took us about 4 hours to play. The staff was very friendly. I really like the course design. The scenery was awesome with a lot of old trees and rolling hillside surrounding the course. La Purisima was very hilly. You have holes where you are hitting up or hitting down. Course can be difficult to walk. Today the wind was really blowing which makes it more difficult to play. Being November, I was surprised the fairways and greens were in great shape. It was difficult for us to play since on most of the holes, we didn't know what direction the holes went. Some holes had severe doglegs. Course demands a lot of accuracy. If we're ever in the area again, we will be back to play again.

Finally made it to 'La Phirana', not quite the beast I expected but what a beauty. Surreal weekday morning: fog burning off after sunrise, I'm the only one out, deer crossing fairways, WOW, a course which will produce fond memories (other than the double bogey on #9 :) It is a gorgeous, challenging track with no houses lining fairways, it's walkable (if you're in shape for it), a friendly staff, and well maintained. Gotta get back here with some buddies ... someday soon.

As always, a day at La Purisima is among the truest tests, and best treats, in golf. While other courses are struggling through the end of summer to maintain top conditions, La Purisima is in great shape. Greens are rolling beautifully and though some seemed a little bit firmer than others, speeds were very consistent green to green. This course definitely rewards good shots and you can play it aggressively in spots, but you pay a very high price for trying hero shots in the wrong places. It's hard to imagine finding a better examination of your golf game anywhere. You owe yourself a trip to La Purisima - and when you go, make sure you're ready to think your way around the course and have your game thoroughly tested. You'll definitely find a spectacularly beautiful golf course and a day you'll not soon forget.

I started playing golf about 10 years ago and this was the only course I knew for the first 5 of those years. It is certainly a wonderful course, and I have begun to understand that more and more the more courses I play. I don't know if they still do, but when I was playing there as a junior i could play for $2 on weekdays and $5 on weekends. Talk about a quality for your green fee. I would play almost everyday in the summer. So I've played this lovely course close to 500 times and everytime it challenges me in a different way. I have found that if you can play well here you can pretty much play well anywhere. If your shooting under 80 here, you've got some game!!

A great challenging and scenic layout that's off the beaten path with hardly any distractions except it can get a little windy.Be careful of that tree in the middle of the fairway on the 1st par 5 on the back nine- didn't like that layout since I hit a great drive down the middle right at it & I have to layup around it!

My wife and I played 7/3/06. Tee'd at 10:30. 1st, the people were great! My wife is a high handicaper and I'm a 14. Played from blues with a consistant wind, probably 15-20 mph. 1st time in years I've actually enjoyed the wind! The course is very challanging, yet fair, greens fast but true. I have to say that La Purisima is right there as my one of my all time favorites! The golf course made me play my game, made me think and gave me choices. Excellent! As well as the fact that my wife loved it as well! One of the only times that she was disappointed that our round was over. All in all-wonderful track, great round, can't wait to go back! Thank you, La Purisima.

From the moment you arrive here, the feeling takes hold, this is serious golf and when you finish you will know that you just played one of the best courses in CA or anywhere else for that matter. There are many golfers who have never played here, it's not that well known but it is a MUST if one wants to experience the Central Coastal feel of CA. Is this in the top Ten hidden gem courses in the USA?

WOW!! Has to be in the Top 5 courses in Southern CA. Played 6/24 36 Holes Great breakfast at the cafe, the Pro shop staff were super. Topped off a 3 day golf marathon with Dinner at the Hitching Post. I'm not sure it really happened.

Course is in fantastic condition. They have added lots of new sand and the fairways are clean and smooth. The greens are rolling slow but true which means you can attack the stick. As always La P is the greatest test of golf around. Not a bad hole on the course.

Played Monday morning, 6/19/06, on a clear sunny day with light morning breezes that increased as the day continued. I’d heard a lot about this course and wasn’t disappointed – holes sprawled across rolling CA foothills with no surrounding development, visually attractive course in great condition. Greens and fairways were in great shape – greens were receptive and rolled well. A ‘throwback’ type course in that there is no yardage book, no GPS, so you must play the course a few times or go around with a veteran to know where to hit the ball, such as how far needed to carry a trap off the tee, etc. Several holes have big oak trees in the middle of the fairway – attractive, but on those doglegs, which side am I supposed to hit to? Just had to guess (not always correctly). Once out on the hole, sprinklers were marked and there are 150 yard posts, and the greens are depicted on the scorecard. However, I went out as a single behind a tournament group, so I was guessing on where to hit it on many holes, and play was VERY slow. No cart girl on this Monday – don’t know if they even have one. With wind picking up as the day went on, the last four holes, playing directly into the prevailing wind, can be very difficult. More room for error off the tee on the front side. Highly recommended – just come prepared for the conditions described.

You will not find better conditioned fairways anywhere in the world. Greens are good but not unbelievable - rough is excellent. Too much sand (too fluffy) in many of the bunkers. Always a fun but brutal course to play - If you haven't done your scoring on the front nine, don't expect things to get better on the back. One of the better values in CA.

This course is the absolute best value in California. Only Spyglass and PGA West are harder, and if the wind is blowing (which it usually does in the afternoon) play for bogeys and pray! Great layout. Fast greens. Incredibly long from the back tees. Not crowded when I played it either.

Took up golf 2 years ago for retirement. Started here and love it. As bad as I am at the game,it is a great place to play. Staff and course excellent. Always well maintained. I play 5 courses around here and this is my favorite even though it so hard. It makes you think all the time and the pin placements can drive you nuts. Play it once and you'll be back. I'm glad I live here.

Played the day after Thanksgiving - 2nd time visiting this course. It's outstanding. Only gripe was the lack of a beverage cart. Other than that, there aren't enough superlatives for this course. It's out of the way, but so worth the drive!

Great golf course! A must play! Was camping by Rancho San Marcos. Called the course day before; they said come on out. Put me with a twosome. A couple locals who play it alot. The greens had just been sanded and were running a little slow. I'd hate to see them when they're fast!!! This place is what golf is all about!

Played here for the first time 8-8 afternoon. For the price, you can't beat this course with a stick. Friendly pro shop and marshalls. Only complaint about the service was no yardage book available. Print out e-yardage before you go. Course is a very tough design, don't play from the back unless you're single digit and can whack it a long ways. Course was in good shape, a little rough around the edges (where I sometimes end up). I didn't like the half-dirt and crusty traps, but they weren't crusty enough to keep my ball from completely embedding in the sheer vertical face of a large bunker on the back 9. Sand plays heavy. Greens were smooth and soft. Fairway lies were pristine. If it wasn't so far from me, I would play here a lot.

A great course - one of my favorite tracks! Conditions are excellent, from tee to green and everywhere in between. A challenge for all who tee it up! And...one of the best value courses in the state.

FYI, Gold tees are now the White tees, White have become Blue and Blue tees are now the Blacks. Probably a good idea as many players should be playing the whites on this beast!

If you have a chance, take a drive to this out-of-the-way gem and you will not be disappointed!

Played on 07/29/05 the last of the tgif tourneys here. For $41 we played a 2 man Chapman format ( 8 teams ), cart, green fees, beer, fried shrimp, taquitos, prizes and give-aways included. The 2 1/2 hour drive was well worth it. This course is so worth it! It is too bad that they will no longer put this tourney on - not enough people. I bet if enough people could make the drive, they would start it up again. The pro was talking about 80 people or so. Best course for the money in the state, I'll bet.

sealskinz - Duarte...I wish Lompoc
Continuing from my prior post....

Hole ten, had a major hiccup. Drove the ball through the fairway into the thick rough. Took me three hideous shots to get on the green from there. two putt for a double bogie....back to even par...E

#11 ....can't even remember much about it...fairway, green, two putt... it was such a ho-hum par....still even par.

#12 Trying to reach in two is almost impossible but I still tried. second shot ended up about ten yards from the front edge. Nearly chipped in...easy birdie!! back down to -1.

#13 I had par...ho-hummer with an 8-iron off the tee

#14 is my favorite hole, period. In the hundreds of rounds that I've played here, I have honestly birdied this hole more than 75% of the time. Hit a huge dead-straight five iron off the tee. left with about 150 yards, hit a soft eight to the blind pin. could just barely see the top of the flag. got up there and it's stuck inches from the hole. Another easy birdie to rally back down to 2 under par.

#15 is always described as a true three-shot par five. I disagree somewhat. Get your first drive down near the end of the first section of fairway. All you have to do to reach the green, and I know this still seems nearly impossible for most of you, is start your 3 metal or a 1 or 2-iron down the right edge of the second section of fairway and hit a low penetrating draw. With enough gusto the ball will bound all the way towards the left side, even off the fairway and, if lucky enough, will start to turn back to the right and down the steep hill, toward the green. It is possible to get the ball to the putting surface but it will most likely roll off the left side of the green. Still, you can putt from there if on the fringe, or its an easy chip if the pin is playing slightly toward the back of the green. I did this and made yet another great birdie...-3

#16 is always intimidating off the tee. It feels so narrow up there. This hole in my oppinion requires your best 3-wood. The loft will get you up over the trees squeezing in from the left and right sides of the tee box if you happen to hit it a little sideways, and should give you enough length to reach this tough par four in regulation. Chipping is tough around this green. It's essential to hit the green in regulation if your looking for a par. Today it was just a ho-hum par thanks to this strategy.....two holes to go and I'm at -3.

#17...the hole where the kid in the Pepsi TV commercial makes a hole in one with no one to witness, but a lonesome course ranger . Anyway, this is my second-favorite hole at La Purisma...and it still is because I managed to make another birdie after a 3/4 9-iron ended up ten feet away from the hole. Just a dead-straight putt for birdie left.

now I'm -4.

I step up to the eighteenth tee and low and behold the lady who nearly aced the third hole is already walking onto 17 green behind me. I wave, then proceed to tee up with a driver. Biggest drive of the day!!--320yards plus--left with a 56 degree sandwedge from a pretty tight lie in the fairway. Hit it perfectly and I knew it....I could just feel it travel up the shaft of my wedge. I knew it would be close. The ball's headed right at the hole, everything is in slow motion, and the d%mn thing slam-dunks into the cup--no hop!! I fell flat on my back and had a laughing fit until the lady behing me caught up. She comes right up to me and says one word, "wonderful". And a wonderful Eagle it was to match my personal best on La Purisma...-6....66/72.

By the way the course is immacualate and you won't find a better course anywhere!!

I hope they have a Q-school stage here again soon...I just might qualify playing like this.

FORE!!!

Been playing here since I was 11 years old. Shot a 66 from the back tee when I was 17. Yesterday, at 27 years old, I decided to take the trip up to Lompoc.

Got there first, even before the starter had arrived. Not even the maintenance guys were around yet. What a beutiful place to anxiously wait for the first tee time to come along and watch the sun rise slowly over the hills to the east.

Starter let me go first. I walked, which you should at "LA PIRAHNA", the nickname for my favorite course in the USA. The back tees were pushed forward but I played it all the way back anyway.

I started with a solid 3-wood on the first fairway. You should take more loft in the morning at La Purisma because there is less roll than carry in the early morning at least. Then slammed a 2-iron to the green about fifteen feet away....sunk that one for an EAGLE....great start to say the least.

par on #2...ho hum, but a nervous ho-hum at -2.

birdied#3 from five feet, PW.....-3

bogie on four...dont ever put your ball above the hole on this approach, even if it means being short of the green leaving a simple chip to the front portion of the green....if the pin is on the back shelf, just hope you get lucky!!.....back to -2.

Hole five...Witnessed a miracle. Standing in the fairway looking backwards toward the green at hole #3, I saw a ball land on the back of the putting surface which spun back five feet, lipped out ending up on the very edge of the cup. I watched the ball for a minute or so and along comes this lady. She gets up on the green on her way to mark her ball, but itf falls in the hole by itself. She replaced the ball and tapped it back in like she should have--very honest.....I hollored over, "WUNDERFUL"!! She responded with a smile and a big wave.

Anyway...bogied hole #5 after failing to get up and down out of the deep bunker in front of the green....-1

hole #6 has the best view of any hole on the course....drove it past the fairway bunkers, the ball actually ended up on the left side of the hole just off of the fairway. Killed a 3-iron from there to the left side fringe. Used my putter off the fringe...put it up there some four feet away and sunk the birdie...-2

Happy to walk away from #7 with a bogie...what a tough hole from the back tee....actually the only hole I somewhat dislike on the entire course.....-1 again.

#8 saved par from the right-hand green-side bunker.....still -1

#9 stuck a 4-iron three feet from the hole. had some break to it but managed to catch the backdoor slider for another bird...-2 through nine holes...34/36.

Will continue on a later post....

Absolutely a great value and a great course to play many times. Worth every dime and quite tough from the back tees and a test from the next set. Veiws are great, the food in the restaurant is very good and the people are pleasant. One of the best layouts in the nation by far. Could be a U.S. Open course if there was a large enough population base nearby.

Played Sunday, June 5, at 9:00 a.m. This course lives up to the hype. Very little traffic. Fairways were immaculate - perfect lies everywhere. Greens were fast and true, with challenging undulations. Prepare to 3-putt a few as you figure out the speed. Not long from the white tees, 6187 yards, but accuracy is a must off the tee. A real shotmaker's course. Beautiful layout with elevation changes, no houses lining the fairways, etc. Last three holes into the wind are a true test of golf!

THE best golf course for the money I have ever played. Fantastic difficult layout. Try to keep your score decent at the close of both nines #6-9 and 16-18 and very difficult and can ruin a good day. Bunkers always tend to be unraked and sand can be very uneven...the only knock I have on the course.

Our 4-some played for a total of $100 ($25 each) with an email special....probably the best $25 I have spent in a long time. All of the other comments are spot on. Great course, beautiful setting, challenging, and in immaculate condition. Just wish it did not take me 2 hours to drive there, BUT, I will make the drive again to play this beauty in the not too distant future.

The only "less than immaculate" factor were the traps, but these were all being worked and filled. This is a must play.

As a club member that lives 1.5 hours away, this course is well worth the drive and you will definitely want to return once you see how all the twists and turns in the course lay out.

This is a course to play multiple times as it takes a time or two to understand where the trouble and safe spots are.

Greens roll beautifully, tough to find better maintained greens anywhere else.

This is a course that you can play and if you play well, score on.

Course is in extraordinary shape considering all the rain we've had. This has to be the best golf value in the state. By far the best test of golf on the central coast. This course is fantastic from its tees to the greens and is truly a test of the game. None of the holes are weak and all offer their own true test and character. A must play for those who can play and a must stay away for anyone who cant break 100 ( a real 100 not the typical golfers 100) Awesome!!!!

This course (and staff) continue to impress me. The conditions are nearly perfect. Fairways in some fairways are still a bit spongy from weeks of rain. But I tip my hat to the grounds crew for protecting the course from cart tires and even heavy stepping. Now if golfers would only bother to fix their ball marks.....

Within the next 4 weeks I'd venture to bet La Purisima will be in its best condition - ever.

I played in the Pepsi event last weekend. I had only read about La Purisma -- and many times the Internet read on a course is better than the course itself. Not this time. This is a true, old-school championship layout. No Mickey Mouse holes. No trying to jam in a par 5 when a good, long par 4 would do. In fact, playing with two NCAA champions on the tournament's first day, I noted that neither of them had a real, solid chance to get home in two on any of the par 5's.

This is a great test of golf -- and it's an even greater one (in the true spirit of the game) when the wind kicks up in the afternoon. The greens are slick and true -- great undulations, and knowing where to land your approach shot is a must if you want to score. The one curiosity about it is that it's in the middle of nowhere, considering it's a first class golf facility and well maintained. My understanding is that the closing/ cut backs at the nearby Vandenberg Air base had a big impact on the local economy and the plans to build the corresponding development along the surrounding hills (not on the golf course, desert style) in the late 80s.

Get out there and play La Purisma. Seriously.

I played 36 on this course last week, the same day that a pro tournament was being held. One of the pros told me it was the hardest course they play, which included most of southern California. We started early, before the tourney, and didn't get much wind until the end of the 2nd round, and it was pretty calm anyway. Nice layout and walkable, although we used a cart to get in 36. Never had to wait, and didn't hold up the group behind us much either. Not much, if any, OB, and with it being dry it was easy to find balls when hit into the dry grass. If you hit it into the bushes or trees just give it up and pull out another ball. Very quiet and peacful, except for a few holes along the highway. Overall, a good experience.

A well maintained and challenging course in a beautiful setting. The doglegs, elevation changes, and a few blind shots contribute to the difficulty, but when the wind comes up in the afternoon this course can be a monster. Play it with the realization that you will not be having a career round, and you can have a great time.

Great layout and one of my favorite tracks around. Worth the 2 hour drive up. Course conditions were not quite what I would have hoped, the standard on high end daily fee courses is pretty high in both Santa BArbara and Ventura counties and I would say that the course conditions were below par versus others around like Cypress Ridge, Glenn Annie, Moorpark, Rustic, Tierra or Sterling Hills. A little dissapointment, but the layout and the surroundings more than make up for it.

In you’re going to play it, play it in the morning unless you enjoy a brutally tough course at 15 to 25 mph winds. We played out there yesterday and found the course in excellent condition. Heard from the guys in the shop that they are no longer a host to Q-School and that they moved it out to PGA West. Too bad. This is as good of test of golf as I’ve played anywhere. Great tranquil setting, demanding yet fair tee shots, well protected greens, and long. You can walk it but I suggest a cart. After 6 holes you’ll be glad you did. Absolutely love 2,3,4,5, stretch. Worth the green fee right there.

If you have not yet played La Purisima, you have not played the best course in Southern California. Period. Plenty of tee boxes to keep everyone happy, and for you tough guys, get back to the tips, catch a little wind (normal after 11 AM or so on most days) and knock yourselves out. No better course layout or conditions in So Cal. Good elevations, great views, huge layout, terrific views. Just you and nature. Shop is great. Practice facility is great. Putting greens give you a true indication of what to expect from this level of par/slope rating. Bring every club in your bag, and get ready to hit all of them. Rewards shaping ability, especially off the tee. Just punched on July 5th, so give it a while.

Played mid-morning Jun 23. I've played a lot of the SoCal public and private courses, and this is, in my opinion, the best overall track. A pure golf experience in a terrific setting (with no homes on the course either). A straightforward course; one of the best layouts in Calif. No tricks or gimmicks. The course is in top shape, and the afternoon winds make it more than challenging. The greens are fast, smooth and fair. It's no wonder why the Tour qualifiers are held here - it's a tournament qualtiy experience. It's worth the drive and more.

Haven't played here for a few years - every bit as good as ever! Hard to believe that such a fantastic layout gets so little play. (38 people on the sheet for today) The only complaint I had was that they would not allow any tees times prior to 7am. (maintainence decision) Otherwise, just a wonderful way to test your game, and this course will test your game!

This is one of the toughest and finest courses in the state with hard to hit fairways and fast tricky greens. It says a lot about a course that you can love it while scoring high!

I can't say enough great things about this golf course. It's a gorgeous layout, a true test of golf, and the conditions are among the best I've seen anywhere. This is absolutely worth a drive from anywhere in Southern and Central California and should be on everyone's must-play list. This might be the best golf value in the state at $65 weekday with a cart. Greens rolled beautifully, the fairways weren't just immaculate, they were perfect. There's not a let-up hole or an easy shot anywhere on this course - come prepared to put your game to the test.

Tough, very very tough. This is a real challenge of a course. Bring your best game and check your ego at the 1st tee. If you play it smart and dont get to c%ck y you can shooot low here but as soon as you start thinking you can make that 1 out of 10 shot your done! Double Bogey time. The conditions are usually stellar and the route is really fun. Not an easy walk but a great course - Too bad it is in the middle of nowhere becuse I to would paly it every weekend. Bottom line is you have to give this a go its a reasonable green fee and a real treat to play.

Played 36 on 11/18.

Man, I love this course. I wish I lived next door and could just play golf here all the time.

Well, the course is great shape as always. The greens were nearly recovered when we were there, and by now, I'm sure they're perfect. The fairways are beautiful... a few spots had some divots probably left over from the Q school qualifying, because usually they were in spots that I can't hit it... HA! The sand is perfect, and the rough was great... fortunately cut back from where it probably was for Q school.

I hadn't been up there for a year, and didn't realize that they've changed they're free replay policy to $15. Still, the best golf for any price. Can you tell I like this place?

Played on Thursday 10-2. Twilight is remarkably down to 1 PM and walking is $30. After watching WGC's on Friday I felt like I had just played the same type of greens. Hard to hold and would make a very faint divot. I'm know stimpmeter expert but it was nice to go through what Tour players do at least for a day. Everything everyone has said about the wind is true and then some. It really affects every shot on this course. Will come back very soon to see if I could manage better than a 95. Great 4 hour walking day!

Played on Sept 20. As expected, course was in excellent condition. Greens were running pretty quick, but not crazy fast. Most of the front nine sprinkler heads are now marked for yardage. They are working on completing the back nine. For the price and conditions, it's worth the 2 hour drive from the SF valley.

love this course, even though it is hard and windy. very challenging but needs to have more distances on the fairway.

Nice course on an immense amount of land.
Good visuals on several holes.
Good walking course.

Started 1:00 with no one around. Rather windy though in the afternoon.

Very soft greens. So soft that footprints disturb the ball line. Very few flat spots on the greens with very fair, dense grass all around. Fairways are in very good shape. Some holes really require some knowledge before play.

Several blind shots, some constricted fairways aren't possible to see.

We paid $15 for a replay and got in another 9. We played "til the cows came home" or at least mooed for their dinner. We could hear them clearly on the nearby cattle ranch.

I'd pay and play it more were it not so far for me. Nice place for a jaunt or a combination stay in Santa Ynez with some other activity like wine/bike/hike.

I'm typing this up in the late afternoon after playing a round this morning. I'm still on a high. What a great course. Got there for a 7:30AM start time. The weather was foggy, but visibility good. No one ahead of us, no one behind us. The course was for ourselves. The fairways are in great shape with some minor divot damage (nice to see the greens staff filling them in). The greens were firm and fast fast fast. Although I'm a bit of duffer, I had three birdie opportunities taken away by these greens. I'm pumped to play this course again in the future.

Bring your A-game to this course! You'll need to pick your landing areas cautiously. Great course with tons of character and once the afternoon winds kick up, the last four holes have to be the most challenging around.

Playing La Purisima is one of the best golf experiences you can have. I have played there several times and I have never been disappointed. A great course with great views.

My home course, and love it. Right now, greens are in need of a little attention, slower than they used to be, but better than average, that's for sure.

Played on Father's day. Made the treck all the way up from LA. Nice drive. I remember what I like about this course: challenging layout and in fine condition. What I forgot. The wind howls at this place, like all the time. However, a properly hit ball defies the wind. On number 8, a downhill par 4, right into the face of a wind, lets say gale, I shut the face of a three wood that was ripped, with a little draw. Pace of play was great. The greens were a little munggie for my taste. Overall a fine test at a reasonable price.

This course reminds me of Ojai Valley and Empire Lakes mixed together. An overall pearl of a golf course because of its fine conditions and playability. The wind made it tough for club selections especially for the par 3s. Plan to play here and realise that any score in the 80s is a good score. Hats off to anyone who can break 80 on this tester.

One of the best courses you can play!!! PGA Tour school played there-what else can you say. Conditions are always very good. Greens are near perfect and roll true. BEWARE if the wind is up which it is almost always there-- it could be a long day. It's still worth it because of its great condition and scenery. Once you play it you'll come back!

Being a former S.B. resident, now living in the SF Valley, I occasionally make a central coast golf run to either Sandpiper (too expsensive-too bad), RSM (a real fave, but also too expensive) or Ojai Valley Inn (get on their mailing list for weekday discounts).

But this time, I decided to go the extra 30 miles north to see an old friend-La Purisima. I hadn't been back in 12 years, because the course so punished me, that I vowed never to come back until I was better prepared (read-wind)!

On this particular sunny Tuesday morning, there was only a light breeze blowing on an empty course. Maybe it's sticker shock - $50 to walk or $68 w/cart on a Tuesday morning may be a bargain in the SF valley, but to drive 130 miles, it's a bit much, but still a bargain when compared to neighboring courses.

Anyway, the course is in fine condition. Tee boxes are near perfect. Only a few of the back boxes a little chopped up. Bunkers are a liittle on the "cakey" side. The course super informed me that he's gradually replacing this local sand, with a finer sand from the Monterey area. Fairways are spongy and well defined with 2-3 inches of rough. Greens are soft and fast! Over-all, plush conditions. Old school golf at it's best.

Next trip to wine country, play La Purisima and see what what kinda game you really have (or don't)!
