Got an early bird special . . . the typical twilight rate, plus a cart. Couldn't pass that up, as a friend told me it's a great place to play. And it is. At the break of dawn, the cart guy wasn't available yet, so the guy at the counter spotted me a small bucket of balls. The driving range is located just adjacent to the 10t tee; it's on an incline, with a row of backyards right against it. For that reason, don't bother trying to use a driver.

As for the course, I was told by the other guys in my threesome that there were several changes made to it recently, and the GPS gadgets out there likely have to catch up. Sure enough, mine was out of date . . . I think. This course is in the heart of Rocklin, CA. It's a hilly area, a suburb carved out of a former oak forest. You'll see deer, geese, etc. out there if you go in the early morning or early evening. Lots of doglegs and inclined fairways. Often I thought I botched a tee shot by erring left or right of the fairway, only to see the ball roll back down toward the center of it. The rough was formidable. All in all, this isn't really a course for knuckleheads like me . . . you gotta know what you're doing on this course. I played horrendously, but had a great time. A very early Monday morning round won't take any more than 4 hours, no matter how much you suck.
