After a six year hiatus from playing the south course I looked forward to returning.
On a day that threatened rain but turned out cloudy with filtered dun at times mid 50's
Second event of the NCGA Senior Series tour a handicapped year long points battle for old timer golf supremacy in NorCal held at various courses and different scoring formats. This one a shotgun start Individual Net Max.score.

Course overall is in good shape and consistent with other reviews over the years. Mine were from 2019 & '18 and the others hence for the most part could be repeated now. Kudos to the grounds crew.
Greens were good firm and even high wedge shots left only dime spot marks and rolled out. A low pitch or chip with spin (not me) would check on the second bounce most times. The collars and approaches firm enough for my game close to the ground using the contours.
Great shape and color contrasts to the fridges and rough areas pleasing to the eye.

Fairways cut tight and the contrast dark one way light the other got high rating marks.
Rough beside fairways and beyond thick and penal. A few ball searches required. One loss.
Bunkers light white sand private club / pro level quality and where I should have practiced prior. Would have possibly helped the score. The ones I faced were deep in futile attempts to escape.

A tee box renovation project is in it's final stages.
For play this day were provided a modified yardage sheet for 6 holes unique to our day and a note to enjoy it, and the complimentary infamous burger dog and fountain soda provided at the snack shack.

Back 9 ; all shortened holes with 5 teeing off mats (octagon 3.5 foot grass with no base)
not stable and my lefty partners ball would wiggle on the tee in his back swing. NOT ideal!
Front 9 ; 4 shortened holes and only one off the mat.
Off the mat = on newly laid nice sod in the middle of the most forward flat tee box.

With the North course adjacent I think a better solution would have been to incorporate one of those 9's into the tournament play. There was also noisy tree maintenance on a large oak going on by outside contractor on the second hole. not my parade and no complaints. But why my rating was so low in this important area.

Still recommend. Look around for Johnny.

Course in great shape. Rough in most places cut down, but a few spots the rough was high. Resort is top notch, and I would like another crack at ti.

Amazing golf course and worth every penny! get there early to check-in as there is only (1) person at the counter (taking their time) and they only allow (1) person in the proshop. Give the starter your receipt and off you go to warm up to unlimited balls on the range and chipping area. Dont forget to find time to putt as the South course greens are fast with slight undulation. hint...theres more break than you think. I heard there used to be tons of trees in the South and have limited xxx amount today however i think they current tree count still messes with your dept perception. Luckily the course gives you a free course guide however with app the new golf apps, its considered out date. Play the white tees and start bombing your drives to take advantage of being under 150 yards most of the time. another hint...just aim for center of green. Pace of play is outstanding in the AM but will start slowing down during the afternoons. I really enjoyed the excellent conditions of this course. Blows away Hiddenbrooke. A must play course if you get a chance.

Played 3/16 Mid morning tournament tee time. Starting on 10th hole. Glorious sunny day (finally) and the course in good shape. Everything immaculate as you'd expect at this price. Very similar to my review from last year. (seems I do a few of these repeats) so it's "know before you go"... Rough was the real stuff 3"+ and a bit damp. Bunkers like sixpez described in 2018 white blinding sand which the ball would bounce out of the divot rather than fried egg lie. Greens rolling medium holding the high approach. Fairways good shape rolling out. Having played the N and the S courses twice each now, the comparisons are; The slight different topography and bunker sand are the discerning differences of the two in my opinion. Either course your doing ok. Have fun. Customer service great as you'd expect. $$$

Greens rolled true and overall course in good shape for the time of year and as expected for a course in this price range $$$. Rough wet and a bit thick off on the preferred direction but playable most circumstances closer to fairway. Played the ball down and did not get any unfair lies.
Interesting design and fun to play.
Staff excellent and attentive in all aspects from check-in to 19th hole. Recommend the local IPA on draft.
Another venue that will only improve with the spring upon us.

Second round yesterday was at Silverado. I thoroughly enjoyed the North Course last year and made arrangements to come back and play the South Course without having to stay at the resort. Was supposed to play in early November, but the wildfires changed our plans for that trip. Glad to say the area seems to be on the road to recovery. Fire damage is definitely noticeable on the hillsides surrounding the courses, but nothing significant happened to the courses or resort itself. We had an 11:30 tee time, but they had a major frost delay in the morning, so we relaxed and enjoyed breakfast at the grille. We were still able to get off early around 10:45. I don't know if there were that many groups booked on the South and I'm sure there were some cancellations during the delay, so it wasn't bad in front of us. We played through a few groups and eventually caught the morning foursomes on the back nine. Still, a good overall pace of just over 3 hours. Conditions were definitely winter thin, but consistent and playable. Well, it would have been more fair playability without the strong winds that made this course extremely difficult to manage. Tee boxes and fairways have primarily a bermuda base that was tight, firm and a little dappled in color. From afar, the fairways on the North Course looked much more lush as they have different grass in play. The rough had really good coverage throughout and wasn't too penal. The bunkers were immaculate with blindingly white sand. The greens were super duper firm thanks to the dry winter and windy conditions. Almost impossible to hold any approach shots without a ton of backspin. Best bet was to try and run it up, though that was easier said than done because of many false fronts and deep protective bunkers. Putting surfaces weren't as crazy fast as when we played the North Course just a few weeks before the tournament, but they were still fast. Anything downwind or downhill was very difficult to stop by the hole. Anything downwind and downhill was likely off the green unless you went in the hole! Design-wise, the South Course has a lot of the same characteristics as its more famous big brother. It's probably less demanding than North, but still quite challenging. I was speaking to the Golf Director after the round and he was mentioning some long-term renovation plans for the South. They want to try and bring it up to the same level as North, which could mean redoing all the grass to keep the more year-round lush appearance. As it is now, the South is still a really great course that most anyone should enjoy if staying at the resort. I'd easily recommend it, especially if you can play it on a day that isn't so dry and windy.

Foursome played 1230 Saturday 12 March. The rating reflects the greens aeration just 4 days previous, so the greens were as expected; the only good aspect is the softness and holding. GK hit the aeration date dead on. New Management; Troon Golf is now running Silverado. South course presentation was fair to good. Typical of winter golf and so the crews are doing what they can. Due to the rains that have fallen this winter, some soft spots, a few plugged lies, and manicuring taking place where dry grasses can be found. Layout is fun and a bit challenging. Good prac/fac (range balls included) and excellent customer service. Easy pace too at 4.5 hours riding, with many members/guests on the course.

New Management. Troon is now running Silverado. Excellent South course presentation with fine manicuring and lush conditions. Greens are perfect. All other aspects of the course in very good shape. Layout is fun and a bit challenging. Good prac/fac and excellent customer service. A nice resort on a summer Sunday with fine golf. Easy pace too at 4.5 hours walking.

Typical resort layout with enough challenge from any tee. Very wet lately so carts are on paths. Greens were great BUT coring started Sunday 28 Feb. Fairways have been recently cored so grass quite thin, with lots of casual water. Rough quite lush since it has not been cut for quite awhile. Sand was wet. Good practice facility, F&B, and service. For a weekend it was not too busy (weather??) and with a member the fee $40 walking. When this course dries out it can be fun.
