Today Lakes/Vineyards. Wednesdays Meadows closed.
Pace good; all course in good shape due solid maintenance and good watering. Greens holding well and fairways running. Tough enough track with the wind up. Good drinks cart and very nice marshallers. Grill has great food too.

Cool day, lots of breeze. Fairways dry and cut back allowing good run out of the ball. Rough lush enough and high enough to slow down any shot, but dry.
Greens well maintained and holding approaches well with minimal marking. some tees require attention, but generally good shape. Sand very well done.
Good attention with drinks cart, good clubhouse help, and very nice marshalling. Lots of fun and worth the green fee.

Course is drying but the greens have ample watering and are soft and holding well. Around 10 I figure on stimp today, so with the tiered green makes putting interesting. Fairways are running and the rough is cut down to around an inch. Good maintenance throughout. For a Friday afternoon, pace was brisk. Just under 4 hours for a 2 ball. Very nice grill restaurant and very polite marshallers made for another fine day.

May 27 Meadows 9 closed. Played Vineyards/Lakes with 20 mph wind. All holes well manicured, fairways medium fast and greens surprisingly soft and holding perfectly while smooth and quick for putting. Great practice facility (off grass), with good food and beverage support. Excellent marshalling for a timely round.

Played the Vineyards nine followed by the Meadows nine today...I could count all the other golfers I saw all day on one hand between the 3 nines that Chardonnay has, pace of play would have to be rated exceptional. A rare day it is when that happens...anywhere! The course is looking pretty good for this time of year, although the Meadows nine is undergoing some tee box resodding and some greens enhancement, but when spring rolls around, it's gonna be great. Overall, the greens, fairways, and rough are better than one might expect...some tee boxes are getting beat up tho. You can't beat the service at this golf course...it's all first rate.

A wonderful unique setting for golf. The rolling terrain of vineyards and fairways offers a great golfing experience. I will play here again. There is a great collection of par 5's on the Vineyards 9 and the Lakes 9. The Lakes 9 greens were slow and bumpy, but will recover. I enjoyed this course even in the rain. I think the Meadows 9 is the 9 where you have to hit it straight. The 9's that I played were more forgiving off the tee.

pretty good lay out. Greens a little slow for my taste. Pretty windy out there. par fives are reachable. but risk reward. Should play at least once

Played the "Meadows" nine followed by the "Vineyards" track on the 24th. Was redeeming a birthday coupon for a free round...now how many courses do you play who offer you that? All I did was to get on their email list and play there a time or two a year and...voila! Just happened to get paired up with another golfer who was there for the same reason. They also sent a coupon good for 10% off the total purchase in their bar/grille so with the exception of my lack of golfing skill that day, it was all good. The two courses were in very good shape from the tee boxes to the greens. Their new carts can tackle the couple of high elevation points with ease. Great group of people there everywhere...from the bag drop to the proshop, the bar/grille and oncourse marshalls. Never a problem going back to a place where they treat you that good.

Chardonnay is a great place to play anytime, with their 3 distinct nine hole layouts and views from many holes on the course, but this time of year is fantastic. Customer service is very good and the course, with the exception of "I need some help/work" tee boxes, is very playable. Again, the only problem noted today was the number of tee boxes that need some leveling done. Played the "Lakes" nine, followed by the "Meadows" nine and thourougly enjoyed it. Sad to say, tho, the big oak or cottonwood that was at the first tee on the Meadows nine stands no more...not sure why, either disease or storm I would guess. New, larger bar and grille is a nice touch also and my lunch was about as good as you can get for golf course fare. Play it if you can, you won't be disappointed.

2nd time playing this course and I am still impressed. Even with the recent rains the course was not very soggy at all. Some of the fairways had soggy parts but they were minimal. The greens were extremely fast and were still able to hold most approach shots. Definitely worth the $47 dollar special I found on-line. I would play this course again in a heart beat.

I played the meadows/lakes combo about a month ago too. it was ok,but not great. This course(chardonnay) was always on my list of 'quality' golf courses, more exotic than the norm, .I used to drive by it for many years, wondering what it must be like. I imagined beautiful vistas of scenic holes weaving inbetween vineyards, and the high price must certainly be because its a great course.
well,heres what I found.
It isnt. It was ok, decent, not spectacular at all. the layout of the meadows/lakes combination was more ordinary than I expected. Where are those beautiful holes I thought I saw from the highway? they must be on the Vineyards 9 because they werent on meadows at all, or was it lakes...doesnt matter.
this course I played, in my financial view is worth maybe the 20 to 35 dollar fee range....but I would never pay more for it. the condition was good in some places and dry in places, it was not immaculate at all. the winding of the course thru the vineyards was not anything special at all along the meadows/lakes tracks. there were some vineyard orchards here and there...but they stood out in a manner that felt more like thry were 'in the way of the hole' rather than a pretty scenic part of the course. I know I'm being picky here, but the beauty of a golf course means alot to me. Isnt that what the extra cost is supposed to be about?
Ive seen many prettier courses than this one. Hiddenbrooke is prittier. stonetree is prettier. My idea of a well designed and scenically flowing, pretty golf course that feels right is rancho canada down in carmel. even rancho solano in fairfield is prettier than chardonnay.
My quest is to find a public course that looks and feels and has all the best qualities of a fine private course. hiddenbrooke has that. san geronimo almost does. chick corica doesnt. tilden almost does. stone tree has it. chardonnay almost does but sort of doesnt. and never for the full green fee.
chardonnay is nice enough if you can get the online special for maybe 30. otherwise I would always choose a course like franklin canyon for 20. franklin canyon isnt a bad course in its own right.

The course was in good condition. It was a little wet, however; the greens were semi fast. Pace of play was average for the weekend. Greens held most shots.

Was not impressed with what it costs to play. Course is challenging, but for the twilight rate of $69 course could have been in better condition. Greens were very slow.

I love playing at this course! The new ownership has made this an incredible value. Considering that it's in one of the most beautiful settings around -- surrounded by gorgeous chardonnay and syrah vineyards -- golfers would be hard pressed to find a course that offers a better value. Chardonnay has full-service, private feel and the staff is friendly and even the food is good!! The only thing to watch out for is if you like to use a pull cart you will be out of luck as they do not allow them.

The new owners at Chardonnay have done a great job in bringing this course back to life. They now have 3 sets of nines so you could get any of 3 combinations, all a good test. The greens were the best I've seen in N. CA all year, especially after all the hot weather we've had here. Fairways are very playable with few poor lies. Lots of water jugs also for the golfers. Some sand traps will need replacement sand of good quality in the near future, but other than that, it's worth the trip. Check the website for discounted rates.

Worth a visit. Be careful on number 9 of the Vineyards course. Signs are needed to avoid playing to the wrong green. They have a so-called "bonus hole" number 19 right nearby.
