Another beautiful day in San Francisco and Harding played very good today. Not too busy so pop was whatever we wanted. All conditions very good and up to TPC standards. I guess the only complaint was the range was closed because they are waiting for the city to replace the nets blown down by the big storm back in December. We did not eat at the Cypress Grill but it was fairly crowded and as I understand it, lunch is pretty good there and very popular. Always a joy to play here and today was no exception. Resident rate is $53.00 today.

Harding Park is a fantastic course especially with the recent improvements on the greens and sand bunkers. The fairways are in great condition and the tee boxes on usually on even ground. The course is long and straight and the roughs are longer than most courses. The practice greens are the best in the area and they are free! You can practice chipping and putting on greens very similar to those on the course. The driving range is the worst for any course of this kind of caliber. Rang balls are old and dirty. It seems like they never wash the balls. Most staff and very friendly except one or two. A gardener or sometimes he works as a marshal can be very rude and personal. He acts like he owns the course. Be sure to show up at least 30 minutes before your tee time, or you could lose it. Playing Harding Park is a great experience but it could be expensive if you are not locals.

Played 5/24/14. Got a chance to play this course, it was a nice course, but not worth the $$$ they charge non-residents. Greens were hard and slow for most of the holes, but fast on 10-13. Liked putting on the bent grass greens. Fairways, tee boxes and bunkers were good. Customer service was decent. POP was slow due to the guys that I played with. Range was so-so, but for the money I would have thought they would have pristine range balls and a grass range. I get to knock another course off my bucket list. Will I be back, only if I can get on for the resident rate, definitely not worth what I paid for it.

Played Monday March 24. Harding had temp greens for four months and March 22 was the opening of their new greens switched from Poa Annua to Bentgrass. So the greens were smooth, true and consistent. So cool to watch your ball roll without any jumps and all the bunkers had the white almost sparkling sand which played as well as it looked. Since TPC took over you can always count on the fairways, rough and tee boxes to be consistent and up to near PGA standards. Worth the $52 resident fee. A great walking course. Saw the cart girl a couple of times, pro shop courteous and plenty of logo stuff available. Did not use bar nor restaurant. Too many options for that in the city. Pace was as fast as we can walk but took our time and had a brisk but leisurely round. Nice perk of being a resident of San Francisco.

Played Tuesday morning on a gorgeous day with my bro and neph and a single. Ever since TPC took over it's been very consistently well kept from tee box to green. Today the greens were true and a little bit faster than average, i.e. firm but still able to hold the greens and read putts. Fairways ran pretty good today. Pace was good, no harassment from the marshals, checked in early so I won't get berated by the front desk. The only complaint is that there were mucho divots on the fairways that weren't replaced nor sanded. But part of that is this is a walking course so no sand container to use. I was also confused about rakes as most were in the bunker but some were out. I forgot to ask what the protocol is here. I always enjoy playing here as I like the traditional layout, consistent maintenance and local convenience.

Regarded by many as one of the best courses in the Bay Area, Harding Park has a hardcore following. Playing here you will likely pair with out-of-towners & locals alike, many who may have played here since they were boys, which in some cases goes back a few generations. There is no membership but when the PGA took control they allowed the established Harding Park Men's Club to continue to call Harding Park it's home. 

The Pro Shop is friendly but ensure you arrive on time as they do have a habit of chiding slack arrival. But eight minute tee intervals means you need to be ready... Its not the best stocked Pro Shop, the club choice is minimal, a few drivers, Cameron putters and Vokey wedges, but there is plenty of branded merchandise for those wanting a memento of their visit. It is worth mentioning that the rental equipment is excellent offering both Callaway & Titleist sets.

Tuesday & Thursday sees play switch to start from hole #10. Personally I don't like playing that way around, but it isn't a reason to play elsewhere. Tuesday the tee boxes were in excellent order and just in case you dig a little deeper than intended, there is sand on every box. At 6405 yards the white tees take more of a hit, but all boxes are lush, even and players do repair their damage.

When the tour players are coming to town the staff allow the first and second cuts of rough to grow longer. This makes the course a completely different challenge, but on Tuesday the first cut was mown, lush and more often than not the ball sat up. That said there is enough penal hazard if you hit left or right, but most is intelligently marked as lateral with red stakes. A number of side-by-side fairways are divided by trees, tall Pines and Cypress trees are responsible for many lost balls at Harding, and it's advisable to practice your low shots prior to playing.

The fairways were lush, green and mown nicely but one downside is that as most locals walk, and many from out of town are advised to walk, it means the cart path only rule sees little by way of sand available so there are quite a few gouges, but players do replace divots, even so we still had some balls find divots. Most annoying.

The greens had been recently sanded and were playing incredibly slowly, I mean incredibly slowly. They also seemed to be quite long and were quite springy, but the slowness of the greens is a constant debate and sadly are not represented by the practice greens. The pin locations can still be tough, you just need to give it a little extra, even on down hill shots.

With it being a foggy day the dampness could be felt in the sand in bunkers, but of the three visits I made to green side bunkers I was delighted to find there was a good depth of sand from which to play.

The practice area is good and the newly opened green and chipping area is excellent with many people not playing and using it free of charge. One downside is this venue needs a grass driving range the plastic mat area is not representative of the high standards set elsewhere on the estate.

The clubhouse is very enjoyable as the food is good, the beer is good and there is also an outside grill adjacent to the 18th fairway which serves good choices of sandwiches and beverages. The well stocked cart comes around frequently and always seems to arrive at the green when I do.

The general level of customer service is what you expect from a PGA venue. I cannot really say anymore than it is very high.

I was kinda reamed out for checking in 10 minutes prior to tee time but my friends advised them I was on my way in so that was kinda unnecessary. We didn't see refreshment cart at all but that was an anomaly. I've reviewed this course many times already so I'll leave it short today. Main thing is Harding is consistently good now that TPC has taken over management. Dunno if I can recommend to out-of-towners at their rate. Whew! But I guess it helps keep the cost down for residents.

Yet another ridiculously overpriced San Francisco course. Including this course in the TPC family degrades the whole brand. Anywhere else this course would be $30/round. It is usually very well kept, conditions are as good as they can be in the climate the course is located in, but it is a wholly uninteresting course. There are much better and cheaper options in the Bay Area.

Management is on the ball with maintenance. Bunkers are consistent. Everything in order with this course. Paid resident rate.
