A solid value. While the layout of this golf course is nothing special, the condition of the course is excellent. The greens are in extremely good shape, though they are not mowed particularly tightly so do not play too fast. Some of the undulations on a few of the greens border on ridiculous, but they are entertaining. Not a particularly long golf course, but the shorter holes play into the wind, creating some challenge. The long rough noted by other reviewers will come into play for mid-high handicap players and will penalize you, but it should not dissuade you from playing here.

I reviewed this course not long after it reopened and was not thrilled. Six months later, it's coming along very nicely and gets better each time I visit. Greens are in fantastic shape. Very smooth and true, still a bit firm. The penal rough around the bunkers (a very cool look, but easy to lose ball) has been cut down in the front. The long natural grass off the fairways remains but if you are 40 yards off line, you SHOULD be penalized. Best of all, people continue to stay away from Peacock Gap. As a result play is very light. It is not usual to see people tee off on a beautiful weekday at 10am ALONE. So you won't have any complaints about slow play here. Not sure how long it continue like this, word will get out, so enjoy it while you can.

Played the course for the first time since it's reopening last weekend. Overall, I won't be going back. In sum, the greens are mostly really nice, the makeover is beautiful to look at, but the overwhelming presence of this two to seven foot tall dense grass that's now on the edges of everything ruined most of the enjoyment of this course for me.

As I said, the remake looks beautiful, and the greens, for the most part, are really nice (excelpt for that trough of a green on one of the par 5's on the back nine - what's with the 3-foot "canyon" that runs through the middle?? Definitely over the top and a little bit reminiscent of a miniture golf green in it's very exaggerated contours.)

But by far, the overwhelming negative aspect of this remake is the two to seven-foot tall "natural" grass that is now just about everywhere (and I admit looks so pretty and "natural/estuary" looking). If you even barely go into this tall grass (which is up to seven feet - yes seven feet - high on the left side of the fairway on 11) eats your golf balls. Even a drive that just appears to barely dribble into the tall stuf disappears forever. My partner and I lost a collective nine balls to this tall grass - which functions essentially as if it were water (all is lost when you go into it, even a little), though the slope of 122 from the tips doesn't reflect this virtual water hazard all over the course. In fact, I'd say that the two back tee positions should be at 125/127 or so, just to reflect the punitive nature of this tall grass that's everywhere)

We did play from the "tips" - which still brought the course only to about 6,250 yards but also had the effect of making many tee shots a very narrow "thread the needle" affair, and yes, I'm not a scratch golfer (so not all of my shots were straight, heightening the pain and frustration that the grass wrought upon every shot that went just even 10 or 15 degrees left or right), but I'm pretty sure many golfers don't hit all shots straight and would also start to tire of watching their even slightly wayward shots trickle into these vast thickets, never to be seen again. Every time.

Golf is difficult enough as it is, and therefore hard enough to enjoy to begin with - the dense, tall "natural" grass eating your every ball that it touches really just doesn't enhance the golf experience at all. It's everywhere and really frustrating to look and look and look and look and not find even one ball that went into this stuff. At least with water, you know it's gone and you move on - there isn't any false hope leading every time to frustration, like there is with this grass everywhere.

If I do play this course again, one thing is for sure - I won't play from the far-back tees like I did. First, I admit I'm probably not good enough, given how narrow the tee shots became fromt he back tees (index of about 21 or so - not great, but not totally incompetent). And second, the "regular" tees, though shortening the course to about 5,700 yards, seemed to eliminate most of the "thread the needle" requirements of drives from the back tees. However, the course then becomes so short you'd probably use your driver vey little, which is too bad and gives the course a smallish feel to it. But the frustration of the hope/disappointment cycle that you go through over and over and over again with that tall grass means I'm willing to sacrafice the driver in favor of a more pleasant experience that the more forward tees appear to offer.

So, if you're going to play this course, and don't have absolute confidence in the straightness of your drives, do yourself a favor and play the 5,700-or-so yard tees and you'll probably lose fewer balls and enjoy yourself more.

PS - they now have this big granite bowl of polished black rocks at the first tee, with a pleasant saying about how if you take one of the rocks you'll have good luck. I think the rocks need to be bigger, because mine dispensed very little good luck . . .

Won't go back until at least a full week of dry weather. Course was extremely saturated. Greens were in great shape on the bright side. Definitely overpriced given the condition. I'll try again in the summer.

This was my first time out on the newly reopened course. Before the makeover, Peacock was a pretty ho-hum course. Not any more! The severely undulating greens have turned the short game and putting into a real challenge. Some might gripe they are over the top, but, other than the "thumbprint" on number 10, I don't think so. Oakmont and Augusta are famous for their greens, so why not? It certainly makes things interesting. If you are on the wrong side, forget it. With temps in the low 50s the 6200 yards played much longer. The first three holes are a pretty demanding start. The greens were firm and still a little young. Putted pretty smooth though. Unlike the other recent poster, I found the course to be pretty scruffy. Lots of thin spots, uneven and sandy tees. Bunkers were good. They've bumped the fees up to $65 on weekdays and a bucket of 30 balls is seven bucks. They should include them at that rate. They are angling for the upscale image, but they have a way to go. No color coded flags or pin sheets either and they would have really helped. Even though I live only about 15 minutes away, I won't be going back for some time.

Peacock Gap just reopened, played here on 12/2/07. The course was in very good condition. They changed the configuration of holes 6,7,8 & 9. The greens putt true but they all have different tiers and undulations. On several of the greens they put big valleys and one even has a hole in the middle of it. If you use a power cart, they are now restricted to the cart paths. I personally don't feel it's worth the $75.00 walking and $90.00 w/cart weekend rate.

I had a very pleasant experience golfing at peacock for the first time this week. The round took a bout 3.5 hours and I shot my lowest score to date (76).

The course doens't stand out to me as being super interesting in layout but is basically a well put together course that rewards you for hitting str8 (but isn't that almost always the case?). They are doing some major reconstruction and two holes have temporary greens that convert one o the par 4s into a par 3 and one of the par 5s into a short (sub 300) par 4---making the course a par 69 for the time being. Besides the shoddy temporary greens, the grens were in good form---not country club, but solid public.

Definitely a course worth trying as the "vibe" at the course was very comfortable and was well kept: the golf carts were well equipped (club cleaners etc.), a barbeque grill was running and the staff was friendly. not to mention, the weathe rin SF was totally overcast that day, but it was pure blue skies in san rafael. always a plus!

Played this course on 5/29/06. Course is in good condition, no standing water anywhere. Bunkers are still a bit firm but not bad. Staff is friendly. Burgers and hotdogs are cooked to order at the bbq in front of the clubhouse.

The drainage is very bad. Fairways still very muddy after two days of sun shine.

Course in good shape with some areas where the ball would plug due to wet conditions.

Many holes are of interesting design.
Fairways often close to each other so need to be careful of other groups.
I think it is being taken over by Golf Solutions so may be improved.
