Day 4, rd 5, last round before we hit the road. Tues 3/27 810 tee time, 4:45 rd. course in great shape... probably the best of the bunch (or Trails). Greens the smoothest on the resort, true, a little bumpy, slow 10. Been a while since I played this one... But it is really fun. climbing the hill on 3 after teeing off past the ghost tree, and seeing the reveal of the 14 holes on that side of the hill is a spectacle to behold. Had a great time.

Day 3, round 4, Mon 3/26 11:30 time, 5 hr round. Forecast said clear, got about 2 1/2 hrs of rain, at times pretty heavy. 1-3 club wind at times... but most of the course is sheltered due to the forest. This is my 2nd favorite track, and it was in the best shape (tied with old mac). Greens withstood the water great... rolled mostly true, a slow 10. This course does suffer from divot hell on some landing areas, and there are nets there to prove it. but generally, the course is in great shape. fwiw, this course is way better than spyglass, to give you an idea of my opinion, and I love spy. If I had a choice in its current conditions, I would play this, pac and old mac if it wasn't my first time.

Day 2, round 3, 2nd round of 36, Sun 3/24, 1:10 tee time, 5 hr round... weather pleasant the whole round; sunny most of the round. A little colder towards the end. No rain. Mild wind. These greens were better than BD and SR, but still a little bumpy. Slow: a slow 10. This course has amazing views. It's a favorite for some, its 5th out of the 5 for me... but still a great course.

Day 2, round 2, 1st of 36 today, Sunday 3/24 7:40 tee time, after yesterday's rains, today was a sunscreen day, with intermittent clouds, and maybe 20 min of rain. Greens bumpy and slow, a slow 9 on the stimp might be generous. But much better than bandon. But 4th worst on the resort. This is the most visually awesome of the 5, due to the ever present ocean, and abundance of holes on the cliff. It's also the shortest, no bunkers, and if the wind is down, the easiest... which for us today, it was mild. I love this course, it's a lot of fun. Course in good shape, other than the aforementioned greens. Great counter service food for breakfast and lunch. Only my second round here, and it was a lot of fun.

Made the trip for the first time in 2 years with the NCGA group. I think my 5th or 6th time up here. Sat 3/23, 12:20pm, 4:45 round. This was the first round. It rained for most of the day before, and all night and morning. We teed off in pretty heavy rain at 12:20, but it only lasted 3 holes. People that teed off at 8 got it the whole round, and it was heavy. This is my favorite track, but it was in the worst shape. Greens are horrible. Standing water and muddy on greens built to endure rain. Every green was suffering... bare spots all over... it was auto 2 putt day. I bet even the next day when it didn't rain, the standing water areas were probably casual water. 5 or 6 of the greens looked recently punched in an effort to fix them. The rest of the course was in decent shape. You'd think they'd take more attention to maintenance, given the status of the resort. The problem is too much play, not a good maintenance plan. Heard they haven't punched in years.... don't know how true that is.. but... hope they figure out before the next us amateur in 18 months.

Played in The Moose event on 3.25.24 with fellow gker Mark, and Scott, and Rick and it was awesome. The weather was incredible. The course seemed to fill in a lot from all the rain we saw this year. Tee boxes had minimal divots between the markers. Fairways were like playing soft, again from all the rain. Rough was tournament length as usual. Wet & sticky. Absolutely brutal. Greens were almost perfect, which seems to be the norm around here. They were running quick but some of the holes were gettable. 8.5/10. I would take advantage of any opportunity to play this track. Another property we are very happy to have it on the moose roster!

Played 3/25 in the Gk-Moose event. First time venturing into this area of urban LA for golf.
Sunset Hills exceeded my expectations. Classic 1966 course (Ted Robinson) fit into a smaller area of land. Houses on side of most holes but it doesn't feel tight. Mature trees in strategic spots make accuracy a factor.
Small tees boxes that are in good condition. Well cared for and level.
Fairways close cropped and tight lies with run out despite the rains the day before. Very few wet areas. Rough was cut recently and consistent. The bunkers in good shape with lighter brownish sand at the right depth. Only a few water hazards
The greens how I primarily judge a course.
Mostly smaller side not hugely undulated. In great condition and fast. High marks for the course in this area. As good as any I get to play on and challenging. The better player needs to be below the hole to score well. They require your full attention. Speed and line need to match in order to two putt consistently. Just as you'd expect at a private club. Rated 9+
Sectioned off clubhouse with large pool area with casual restaurant suitable for families where we enjoyed food after. With tennis and banquet facility adjacent too.
Facility updated and modern worthy of membership considerations for area residents IMO.
Easy to recommend and would return again. Another A1 event.

I hadnt played here in probably 30 years. A buddy had a time @ 9:45, 3/24/24 so I decided to join to complete the foursome. The course looked good walking in from the parking lot. Plenty green grass everywhere, the practice facilities were packed, there was a lot of people there. Even with that they got us out a little early.

We rode the Blue Tees, the course is not long but you have to be hitting the ball well. Several blind tee shots and a lot of slight elevation change shots. The Par 3's were a good challenge with the longest being 200 yards. The greens had some pitch and for the most part rolled true, although they seemed a little slow for my liking. The fairways were nice and there was visible rough, and it was still wet from the previous rain so it made it tough at times to find errant shots and hit out of.

Carts are plain jane, no GPS. We saw the beverage cart about 5 times in the round. I cant tell you the rack rate as the round was free, :-)

Really the only complaint was some of the bunkers had hard pan. And the pace of play was slow. We finished a little after 5+ hours but it could have been faster if people had realistic understanding of their games and when they could hit rather than waiting.

It was cold and windy the whole round, so when things heat up a little I would return and play it again.

Played this course yesterday and wanted to update playing conditions. Greens were punched a couple of weeks ago. The greens are still very bumpy and putts will not roll true. Possibly at least a week or two before the greens completely heal.
Overall the fairways, rough and tee boxes are the best I have seen them in awhile as they are green and lush. Only disappointment are the bunkers. Most bunkers are unplayable due to water runoff damage, causing large trenches in the bunkers. The bunkers are nonexistent of sand and are highly compact. Another issue are the carts are highly governed in their speed which can slow pace of play. POPwas around 4.5 hours. Staff members are nice and personable. The restaurant is a great after game stop as they have very good food.

First day the South course has reopened after aerification, so there is still holes/sand on the greens, which I expected. What I did not expect was not having any flags. Out early, so maintenance did not have a chance to put pins in the greens yet. Not a big deal but would have been nice to have them. Surprisingly the greens rolled fairly well and had reasonable speed. The rest of the course is in really nice condition: fairways, tee boxes, bunkers all very good. It was also nice to have most of the holes without cart path only restriction, which I am confident will be reinstated after the rains forecast for this weekend..

Played yesterday in the GK/Golf Moose private club event. Check in with Johnny and Ron was quick and easy. Nice CC atmosphere, pleasant weather, and great course conditions. Shotgun start at 10 am.

Greens: Fast and smooth. They held shots, but you had to have some spin and elevation on those approaches.

Fairways: Great runout and very pristine conditions.

Rough: It was thick in places, but not unmowed. I was lucky enough to not have too many penal lies. Mostly, my ball sat up. No bare areas that I saw.

Bunkers: All were great; raked smooth (I did have a small footprint that did not get raked on one hole) and groomed very nice.

Tees: The three sets of markers were, for the most part, placed onto one long box with a total of about 250 yards difference over 18 holes.

Overall condition of the course was great. Customer service was excellent, and the food was good. If you get a chance to play here, take it.

Played on Wednesday in the Golf Moose outing. Very nice old school, parkland layout. Course was super green and lush, perhaps a little too lush on the greens. They were a little on the slow side, but they rolled just fine, maybe they were growin em out for an aeration. Surprisingly the greens seemed to roll out on approaches and chips adding to the difficulty.

We played the 6,256 yd white tees and the course was flat out tough. Not a ton of elevation change, however a steady breeze, gnarly rough and a zillion trees made for a solid challenge. I'm a pretty straight hitter and I wasn't in a lot of fairways or on a lot of greens in regulation. Most holes are super tight, and tree lined, I finally scoped one and it was 30 yards wide and that wasn't an anomaly. The rough wasn't too long but everybody struggled with it and if you weren't in the rough you were in the trees. Did I mention tight?

Played with fellow GKers Ron, Phillip, and our host Johnny, great group to play with as it was a five-hour round that never felt like a slog. Tee boxes, sand traps, and fairways were all in perfect condition and the four par threes were all different lengths. The outing was less than a $100 and worth the price. Thanks again to JohnnyGK for a great event and I definitely recommend checking it out the next time.
