played morning of Sat Jan 25. Oak Valley is in very good condition right now. The greens aren't super smooth yet, but winter ground conditions have the greens rolling super quick...probably around 11-12. The service here always is good, green fees are fair, and it has an excellent grill. This is a tough course, especially when the wind is up. There are many forced carries, so if you can't carry a tee ball 200 yards or so, you either should move up a tee box, or consider playing somewhere else.

Played afternoon Feb 1. The Ike is in terrific shape. Fairways are immaculate right now, and the course is playing excellently; it should be looking great for the Symetra Tour event in about a month. My only complaint is that there are way too many golfers playing from the wrong tees here. These are tough courses, and if you're here for bachelor party golf...and you only play once or twice a year...well, the blues probably are too much course for you.

played mid-morning Feb 2. First, thanks to starter Imelda for her help; we originally were going to play course 1, but the "crowd" on the course didn't look for golf-ish, so we decided to opt for the more mellow vibe on the Nay; it was a good decision. If you ever have to approach the starter's window here, look for Imelda, because she knows what she's doing -- the other guys are too busy w things other than customer service. As for the course, other than the greens, it's in pretty bad shape. The dry weather and a January of football has taken it's toll on the course. Outside of the greens, it's very scrappy. Many areas that simply lack grass, including some of the tee boxes. The greens rolled smooth though, and were receptive to good shots. It'll take a while for the course to come back, but you can see some signs that the city has decided to put a bit of money into the course. The pond off #4 tee box looks great, the snack shack at the turn looks like it finally got a paint job. I can see things better by March 15 or so, but not before then.

Played morning of Oct 5. This was my first round at De Bell in about 5 or 6 years; I was looking forward to it b/c the layout is fun, and to my surprise, course conditions were pretty darn good for a muni, which I rate according to different standards; what I expect from De Bell is different than what I would expect from Angeles National. I thought the conditions were worthy of the greens fee today, and that's all you can expect. Everything was in above average condition, with no glaring problems. The biggest problem today, however, was the young starter -- the poor kid either has never received any training, or did, but just didn't care because as soon as I walked in the door, he was snarling. No hello, no courtesy, no eye contact, snippy attitude. He did everything wrong. I hope his GM reads this post, b/c this kid is going to cost him customers. It's just completely unacceptable. I have a secret ranking of the worst starters in SoCal, and De Bell just shot to the top of the list.

Played there June 1-2 in a tournament. This was my first time around this track, and I was very, very impressed. The event was the Simi Valley City Champ, and the staff did an A+ job. The course conditions were terrific given the value, and the greens were superb. I play all over SoCal, and at least on this weekend, they were among the best public course greens I've played on in many years. Absolutely zero ball marks, and the perfect combination of slightly hard and receptive. It's a fun track to play, but if you don't hit it reasonably straight, there's trouble to be had. Lateral hazards and OB lurk out there on many holes, but it's a very fair test. I typically don't like Ted Robinson layouts, but he created a fun and challenging track here. The staff is very friendly, efficient and diligent. If you haven't played in this tourney before, give it a try because they run it very smoothly. Round 1 took 4.5 hrs, and Round 2 finished in exactly 4 hours. Simi Hills deserves a try if you haven't been here before.

Played morning of Sat Aug 4. This is the 3rd time I've played here, and each time was an excellent experience. From the time you pull into the parking lot, the service here is attentive without being overbearing. As for the course, it is in excellent condition - particularly for August. The routing/layout is varied, interesting and challenging. I'm a big supporter of Oak Valley because of the course and the service, and Oak Quarry is right there too. My only quibble during this visit was the starter's discretion. He sent out a 2some, another 2some, followed by a 4some and a 3some. He had plenty of time to put the 2 2somes together. His lack of initiative caused undue delay on the course. This may seem minor, but one decision like this can cause delays for a whole lot of people.

Played mid-afternoon, Sun Apr 29. This was my first round in about 5 or 6 years here, so I was anxious to see how the complex had changed. Well, I was blown away. This is a terrific public facility now. The course changes are terrific. First, the routing now is much better -- the finish on the island green is a lot of fun. Second, the maintenance is far better. The course looks cleaner and more polished. Third, the new holes on the front side are well designed, fun and challenging. Those new holes have some terrific green complexes. Fourth, the course plays much harder and faster - more links-like - and the turf (at least on holes 1-13) is much tighter and better. For $25 walking at twilight, this has to be one of the top values as far as municipal tracks in SoCal. I'm now looking forward to playing the Lakes course to see how it compares. I was really skeptical about coming out here today, but I'm glad I did. It's a fun, well maintained course, and a good challenge playing in windy or breezy conditions. Everyone involved with the redesign and maintenance here deserves a lot of credit.

played mid-morning Mon Feb 20. This was my second round here, and I was not disappointed. This facility is run very well, and it is apparent that customer service is important to the staff. The approach here is similar to Oak Valley - it's a facility for serious golfers. The service is efficient without being overbearing. The pro shop staff is welcoming, as is the starter. The bathrooms in the clubhouse and on the course are the cleanest I've seen at a public facility. And the snack shop at the turn actually stays open well into the afternoon. And then there's the golf course. The conditions were terrific, particularly if you prefer firm fairways. The greens were slightly bumpy in areas, but the ball rolls better and faster than they look. But the best thing about this course is the design and hole variety. We played the blues, and from there, a 10 handicap will use every club in the bag. There are interesting short par 4s, double move par 5s, long par 3s, uphill and downhill holes - basically, a fun, interesting routing where no 2 holes are alike. You really have to think on every tee box just how you want to play the hole as most offer more than one option. The green complexes have tight chipping areas, so you must have a good chipping action or it will be a long day. Finally, there are a number of tee boxes that offer terrific views. This is as good a golf value as there is in SoCal.

Played mid-morning 12/23/11. The Babe is in very, very good shape, and getting better. The fairways are tight, rough uniform, and the greens are rolling fast and smooth (#2 green is a little less glassy than the others but that's because it just doesn't get much sunlight and #13 green gets the coot droppings). The tee boxes are passable - there's some excess divot damage on a few. Overall, however, I'm pleased to see the course coming back from its post-summer damage. There used to be a tree on the blue tee box on hole #1 - does anyone know why they pulled it?

Played mid-morning Dec 17. I have never seen La Purisima in such good shape. The greens were fantastic; smooth and fast. The fairways were tight, and the rough uniform. This is a huge piece of property, and that makes it tough to keep groomed. But come out now, because the conditions are top notch. If you have never played here, make sure you make a note of the pin position. Most greens on this course are small, and it's critical you put the ball in the correct position...or else your short game is going to get a severe test.

Played mid-morning Sat Dec 10. The course is in excellent shape. The greens are running as fast as I've ever seen them - prob 12+ on the Stimp. Smooth and fairly receptive; they were a bit on the hard side, but that's just a function of the colder weather. The fairways were in fantastic condition as well - nice and tight. Don't worry about the some "brown" patches here and there; the best courses play hard and fast and an overwatered, super lush and green course isn't the way courses should be maintained. Hard & fast conditions are a great test of your ability to control your golf ball. They know what they are doing here. I'd say the conditions of the greens, right now, probably among the best in all of SoCal - public or private facility. It'd be difficult to find anything better.

Today was my first round here. I've always heard a lot about this course, and was curious to see whether I would like it. Here's the lowdown: SERVICE = A. When we arrived, we were met immediately and given assistance with our clubs. The starter was very nice, informative, and genial. There were on-course marshals; they also were informative and friendly. Beverage cart service was frequent and efficient. On-course water buckets were filled, and bathrooms were clean. The clubhouse bathroom may be the cleanest men's room in all of SoCal. They were stocked with lotions, mouthwash, scented candles, clean floors and sinks. Lunch service was friendly and prompt; we didn't even have to ask to have our drink glasses refilled. After the round, our clubs were cleaned and driven out to our car. The service is as good as any in SoCal. THE COURSE: The layout is interesting and fun. Each hole has different options. Fairways were lush, and among the best I've played this year anywhere; really top notch. Rough was fairly uniform and lush. Greenside bunkers were top notch too; the sand is consistent and smooth. Fairway bunkers yielded tight lies, which make them easier to hit out of. Chipping areas were lush, not super tight, but smooth. My only complaint was the condition of the greens, but I think they may have aerated not long ago. They were a little hairy and bumpy today, but you could tell they probably run faster and smoother on a typical day. The scenery is pretty awesome in several areas of the course. Be prepared for some wind here; I think this course pretty much is a wind tunnel. CONCLUSION: The weather today was perfect - about 74 degrees and sunny...which is rare out here. The conditions were terrific, and the service was excellent. I'd want to play here a couple more times before I'd put it into the rotation, but it's off to a great start.
