See my prior review. Not much has changed. This will be more of a local weather report. I've been playing golf for over 50 years. We played Half Moon Bay Ocean Course yesterday and it was the third windiest round in my entire golfing life. The course plays links-style... 9 holes down the coast... and 9 holes coming back north to the Hotel and clubhouse. The wind started howling as we made the turn. Why we kept playing... I don't know. It was comically windy. Ridiculously windy. Beyond absurdly windy. Check the weather before you go. Even at the special guest rate that I paid ($160.00) ... this was not worth the greens fee. Oh... it was freezing, too!

If I was to come up with a title for this review it would be "What a shame!"  You could tell right away that in its day, this gem by the great golf course architect Alister MacKenzie, (who designed Augusta National, Poppy Hills and dozens of others), was a stellar track.

It still has the bones and design of a world-class golf course: Right on the coast South of San Francisco, huge old trees lining beautiful fairways.  Great holes!

But that's where the good part of this review must end. They have let this wonderful golf course turn to crap. Really sad.

The greens were actually super nice. Old school small, but rolled fast and true.

The biggest problem was, the length of the grass on the fairways. I have seen rough on some courses not quite as long as this fairway grass. It was almost unplayable. The city of San Francisco who runs this golf course needs to invest in some lawn mowers. And use them. Again... what a shame!!

I think that everybody should play Sharp Park at least once just for the experience. The facilities are ancient, and the original layout is a classic!  It is such a classic that I hesitate to use the term "dog track".  Let's just call it a classic dog track!

Gas powered golf cart! Hadn't used one of those in a while.

I will not repeat. Not unless a miracle happens and the City of San Francisco does about five million dollars worth of maintenance.

Alister MacKenzie is rolling over in his grave.

Great pace of play. Finished in 4 hours and 15 minutes.

Played this morning. Scheduled Starting Time: 11:50AM.  The course was not busy, so we were allowed to go out as a twosome... following another twosome of big hitters, a father and a son.

Pace of play was really great. The starter told us that he expected people to finish in 4 and a 1/2 hours. But he said most people take 4 hours and 40 minutes. Our round was 4 hours and 40 minutes on the nose.  The only time we had to wait was on two of the four par-3's...

This was my first time playing any of the Pebble Beach Golf Resort courses. The price was right through a club my friend belongs to so...   Was it worth the greens fees? Yes. Just to say that I played Spanish Bay.

I'll cover three areas. The Good, the Bad ... and the Ugly.

The Good: Iconic golf course. Classic links style. Up-and-down the coast of Monterey. Incredibly nice conditions in the fairways and on the greens.

The Bad: Not my cup of tea. The front side was more wide open, the back side was simply too much golf course for me. Too much carry to get to some of the fairways. It really wasn't very much fun. The greens were either diabolically huge and undulating...  or the size of a postage stamp. The fairways were like roller coasters. Not a flat lie out there. Again... Just not my cup of tea.

The Ugly. It was "cart path only"   And for no good reason as far as I could tell. I probably walked more than if I had just walked the course with a caddy. No GPS on the cart. Sprinkler heads were not all marked. Walking out into the fairway with 3 or 4 clubs each time was a pain in the ass.

It started to rain on the 12th hole and that was about as close to getting hypothermia as I've ever come . Soaked. Foggy. The wet fairway turf made for little roll and again, the course was just too long and too much for me even on even on a day where we chose to play from the white tees

I'm coming back to the area in May to play Poppy Hills, Black Horse Bayonet and Del Monte. More reviews to come. That's all I got.

As for Spanish Bay? Been there. Done that. I will not repeat, even for free.

Met up with a group of guys through the Facebook Sigma Chi golf group. Not all of the players were members of my fraternity, but this group plays a variety of courses all over northern California so I am sure I will get exposure to more great golf. This time was Poppy Ridge in Livermore.  I'm going to have trouble not gushing all over the place about this golf course. There is very little to find fault with. The greens were immaculate, very tough to read, and the pin placements were diabolical. That's all I will say about the greens. The fairways were lush and smooth and the rough was... well, it was rough.

If there is one thing that I can find to say bad about this golf course is that there was no sand bottle on the golf carts and people weren't replacing their divots. It was not horrible, but it made the fairways fall into the "not perfect" category. The 27 hole track plays out among some of the old growth vineyards and each nine is named after grape varieties. Chardonnay, Zinfandel and Merlot. A real "diamond in the rough" and I highly recommend that you play this track if you were anywhere near the area.

Made it back to Peacock Gap again and all the difference in the world between the muddy mess it was last time ... it's all dried out and oh my goodness how the straight balls down the middle of the fairway rolled! Made the course play a lot shorter than it did last time and very enjoyable. Had had a decent day with the putter but but hurt my shoulder on a on a fat shot and wasn't really enjoying the back side very much. It's a nice course, not anything special because it's still a Muni but you know what, the fact that I'm back playing again makes makes me smile.

Cheeseburger here. I'm back into the full swing of golf again. This is my 3rd round in 10 days. My best friend and fraternity brother lives on the 6th hole of the Old Course at Half Moon Bay. But he had made an 11:40 am  starting time on the Ocean Course. We played it today.

From the moment I drove into the parking lot until I got back to my car, this was a special experience. The golf course is spectacular to look at... as is the Ritz Carlton Hotel which shares this amazing piece of Central California coastal real estate.  It is certainly beautiful to look at, but it is also a well laid out masterpiece that uses the coastal area much like a links course in Scotland.

Speaking of other golf courses, the Ocean Course at Half Moon Bay is like playing a little bit of Pebble Beach, a little bit of Poppy Hills, a little bit of Sandpiper... and a little bit of Bajamar in Baja California.

The fairway grass was absolutely some of the best turf I have played on in many, many years. They take immaculate care of it. The rough was not overly long, but you wanted to stay out of it, that was for sure. The greens were super smooth, super consistent... and super fast. Took me a while to figure out how to keep 10' putts from ending up 10' past the hole.

The front 9 moved very quickly and we finished in just a shade over 2 hours. I can't say the same for the back side. I'm not sure what the holdup was, there were marshals out there but I think there were just a lot of bottlenecks. Ended up being exactly 5 hours. But you know what? The landscape, scenery and the golf course itself is so beautiful, we didn't really mind the pace of play.

I'm not sure it is worth the greens fee for a regular diet of golf at Half Moon Bay but it sure was nice to play it this one time.

Overall a very enjoyable round with a good friend and I will definitely be back.

Played the Players Course on Wednesday January 26th. I had never played the course, so I went out with no expectations. The rough had been allowed to go dormant so it was brown. But I don't mind that... because the brown grass was mowed down and not overly long.

The tee-boxes and the fairway fairway grass was perfection. Like a nice green carpet. The greens were very consistent but super difficult to read. It took me until the back nine to figure out that no matter what I was seeing, there was not going to be a break in the putt.

The pro shop staff and the on course personnel could not have been nicer. Country Club service all the way. And the restaurant for after golf food and libations was as nice as any place I have ever been. Father Cheeseburger says highly recommended and I will definitely return.

First time playing this course. I am only recently a resident of the area... I had heard it was pretty nice. And it is. Definitely a muni course. Beautiful location right off the Bay in San Rafael. I was a little surprised that there was no there was no club drop area... but I guess that's what municipal golf is all about.

Overall, the course itself was in fairly good shape. There were a couple tee boxes that were level but pretty sparse when it comes to grass. I have never wiped more mud off of my golf balls and clubs ...  And I have been playing golf for 50 years.

Because of all the rain we have had this year so far, the rough was really long and punishing. So punishing that you could easily lose a golf ball. So keep your eye on it.

The greens were lightning fast. Because it was windy, the chance of your ball blowing off the green was high.  I can't remember a time in my recent past when I have played faster grains. They were greased lightning.

The fairways were a little sparse and as I said, very muddy. Not sure I would play again until late Spring early summer. Too squishy, too wet.

The pace of play was amazing. Never caught the threesome in front of us until the 18th hole. Never pressed from behind. Finished in exactly 4 hours.

Great Senior Rate.

And yes... Father Cheeseburger, GK OG... is back!!

This was Cheeseburger's "return to Southern California" for the first time in many moons. As has been noted before, this course was known as Robinson Ranch the last time I played it.

A friend of mine made the starting time for our foursome ... no problem two-week in advance for 7:57 a.m. on a Saturday. I must say that for whatever reason, we were charged $53.00 for 18 holes, including golf cart. I don't know if this is the regular rack-rate, butI felt that it was most reasonable. Almost Salt Lake City prices!

We played the Mountain and the Desert nines. Plenty of variety. For my game, every tee shot made me think. From tee to green, the course condition was surprisingly outstanding, based on what I have heard or read here in the recent past.

The tee boxes were level and not too carved up. The fairway grass was evenly trimmed and very lush, with very few areas under repair or dirt/thin. The rough was very lush and punitive. About 2-2.5" average. Made me want to stay in the short grass to be sure!

The greens were the best part! They seemed to hold all shots well, and were rolling very true both uphill and downhill. The best part was the consistency. No variation between greens or between nines.

There was a very large shotgun start tournament happening in the middle of our round. We hardly notice that they were there. Kudos to the staff for making this happen.

Pace of play was fine at 4.5 hours. We rarely saw the group in front of us and felt no pressure from the group behind us.

Based on what I have heard, it seems that Sand Canyon Country Club has tackled the problem they were having with the water. Cheeseburger says go and play this course with confidence! I thoroughly enjoyed my morning there.

Okay, fellow GK'ers. It's "Father Cheeseburger" from Salt Lake City! Spring has officially sprung along the Wasatch Front!

Today it actually felt more like summer. We had a high of 88° F. and it was a little breezy. $45 including the cart at straight up 10 a.m. I went out as a single following another single. He got out in front of me and I never saw him and I never saw anybody behind me for the entire front nine. It was like a giant ghost town. Which is really sad, because the golf course is in outstanding condition!

Stonebridge Golf Course is an interesting place, because there are three nine-hole sides. You never know what you're going to get on any given day. Today, I played the Sunrise 9 to the Sagebrush 9!

Sunrise is the toughest of the three sides. Holes number eight and nine are really brutal. I would hate to have a match on the line coming into those two holes as finishers.

Overall, I would rate the condition of the course as outstanding! We had some thunder showers in the past seven or eight days, so things are really greening up nicely. The greens are quite frankly, spectacular! They hold the ball well. They putt true. My advice to anybody playing Stonebridge is that if you think there's a break, don't play much of one. Most putts from no matter where you are are pretty much straight. Nothing tricky unless it's a green with multiple levels!

The fairways are trimmed even on every hole. Perhaps a little long and needing to be mowed, but that's probably because we had rain just yesterday. The rough on most holes is about 1.5 inches and just long enough that you definitely want to keep your ball in the fairway.

I saw crews out on the course filling divot holes and working on tee boxes. Which is nice. They definitely take good care of Stonebridge. The golf carts are gas powered and plenty powerful to get around and up and down the small moguls and hills around the course.

I played the front side in under 2 hours. Making the turn at the clubhouse to head out to the Sagebrush 9, there was a pretty strong smell. For those of you who live around Southern California, you might recognize the smell is being something like red tide. Or sewer. It seemed to be emanating from the large lake along the left side of hole number one on Sagebrush! It didn't detract from my round of golf. But it really did stink! I'm sure they're doing something about it. The water was about to color of chocolate milk!

The Sagebrush side is not as difficult as Sunrise. There are a couple of short par-4's and the par-3s are only tricky depending on the pin position. The number 9 Hole, or number 18 if you finish on Sagebrush, is a par 5 and It's tricky. There is water to the right of the green and a little bit in front. It's all about the second shot for position!

I didn't see another golfer until I had three holes to play. Like I said, the place was empty. The parking lot was only 25% full. I'm really surprised that it was so empty on the Friday of the Memorial Day weekend!

There are some great public golf courses in the Salt Lake Valley. But I always seem to gravitate back to Stonebridge. For $45, you will definitely get your money's worth. There are Black Championship tees, Blue tees, White tees (My choice...68.7/121), Gold tees, and Red tees. Something for everybody!

It was a little early in the season to truly enjoy Cedar Ridge. It's a great layout. Not the type of golf course you can just pull out your driver and whack away. It makes you think. Unfortunately, and this is no fault of the golf course or the staff, it's still winter in Cedar City, Utah. I think we jumped the gun a little bit.

First of all, a weather report. I am from Southern California, and I have played golf in some fairly cold weather out at Goose Creek or other golf courses in the Inland Empire in the winter time. Prior to this round, the coldest golf I ever played was out in Las Vegas at Angel Park. This round at Cedar Ridge is now in first place for the all time freezing temperatures and high wind! To put it into perspective, my playing partner only made it to the 7th hole before he sat in the cart shivering, while I was able to finish 9 holes and call it a day!

About the course. There's a lot of Maintenance going on and a lot of bare spots both on the fairways and in the rough. This is probably because I think the snow just melted last week. There was a bit of heavy equipment and a few landscapers dressed in snowsuits out on the course fixing a variety of sprinkler and other issues. Amazingly enough, the greens were almost in perfect condition. I don't know what condition the sand traps are normally in, but they were filled with red dirt, and not really sand. Overall, the turf grass was spotty at best.

I noticed that the tea boxes were not very level. I'm not usually picky about the condition of tea boxes because, well, I use a tee! But for some reason I could not find a flat spot to hit off of.

Kudos to the Pro Shop staff for giving us a coupon good for one year for 9 holes of golf! I will be back when the course is in better shape and I won't be freezing my ass off!

We had some really late snows this winter, so it's been a while since anybody's been able to go out and play any of the local golf courses. Stonebridge boasts 3 different 9-hole sides. On Wednesday of this week, I played the Creekside and Sagebrush nines.

I was unsure of the conditions I was going to find, due to some recent scattered rain showers, but overall I was pleasantly surprised. The fairways were not as lush and green as they will be later in the spring, but they were very serviceable and evenly cut so that a lie in the fairway was generally a good one.

The rough was not overly long, maybe 2.5 in. The grass in the rough was thick and a little damp so it definitely pays to stay in the fairway. The greens were in excellent shape overall, rolled very true and consistent on both Creekside and Sagebrush!

I went out as a single and did not catch the group in front of me until the 8th hole. As I made the turn, that group dropped out, and another group of walking ladies cut in front of me. I played my 10th hole four times so I wouldn't catch them. I still caught them in two holes. Joined up with another nice gentleman and we stayed a comfortable distance behind them until the final hole. My God they were slow!

The hallmark of this course is the fact that they have plenty of different tee locations for every ability. I played the white tees. They were plenty for me as a 20 handicap.

Always a good choice. Always call ahead to make sure there are no tournaments because this is a very popular golf course with people who run local tournaments. I will definitely be back.
