Played yesterday in the Guru outing, spectator to the GK Cup match between Andrew1 and JohnnyGK.

Things were still wet from the overnight rain, continued to drizzle for the first few holes. Several bunkers had puddles and there were a few casual water spots in some of the fairways but in general, the course held up VERY well. Bunkers were really heavy due to the water, best just to avoid them (good idea but bad execution on my part). Greens rolled very smooth and true, surprisingly quick for how wet they were, no surprise they held all kinds of shots as damp as they were. Rough varied from not too long to "Woa!", all of it was quite thick – if your ball sat down it was tough to get out.

POP was right about 4:30 which was pretty good everything considered. Give the course a couple days to dry out and a few days of sun and it should be in excellent shape. Recommended.

Played Monday in the Guru outing, planned on light rain but only drizzled a couple times, didn’t affect play at all.

First, conditions: Most were very good to excellent, only exceptions were a couple par 3 tee boxes were a little chewed and some muddy/soggy areas but that would be expected with the weather. Greens looked thin but putted great, fairly firm so you had to allow for bounce/roll-out, especially on chips/pitches. Fairways had excellent coverage, some run on drives; rough was thick enough to lose a LOT of distance compared to staying in the fairway.

I have to mention the “waste areas/bunkers”. These waste areas are in better condition and raked/maintained better than most courses actual bunkers!

Loved the layout, it’s solid 1-18 and will require every club and shot in your bag.

Customer service was top-notch, very friendly and engaging.

Definitely recommended.

Played yesterday before work - seems like a LOT of other people had the same idea!

Despite the recent rumors of it's impending demise, it appears "The General" will be around for quite some time. Supposedly, the property is being sold to the VA for future expansion of the National Cemetery but since there's plenty of space for that outside the course boundaries it will take decades before they run out of room.

The course is in decent winter shape. Fairways are like a quilt of green vs. dormant grass, ok to hit from but firm and drives will run quite a bit. What rough is there is usually thinner that the fairway, but about 25% is high, thick and very penal. Still need to level out a few tee boxes but you can usually find a decent spot. Bunkers are more dirt than sand but enough there to play out of - thin mantle crust over a heavier base but consistent.

Biggest surprise to me were the greens. Faster than usually and MUCH firmer. Normally these are "drop and stop" with anything shorter than an 8-iron - yesterday I hit a crisp GW that bounced about 8' high and rolled out a good 30'.

Overall it's a good layout in decent shape for a good price - can't beat that!

Played here twice the last couple weeks – a little late to the party but better late than never!

Due to casino construction blocking access to 4 holes, the course has been re-routed to create a much shorter but still playable 18 holes. Former #s 2 & 7 have been cut in half to create 2 holes each and they’ve added 2 additional par 3’s. Each of the first “holes” carved out of 2 & 7 are kinda “Mickey Mouse” – both are listed as Par 4’s at just barely over 300 yds to temporary greens. The 2nd half of each plays to the original green and are decent par 3 holes. The two extra holes are fairly good – one is VERY short but still challenging, utilizing the practice green wedged between #1 & #17 (do NOT go long/left into that bunker, you’ll regret it!) - the other is set in the middle of the old range area and plays 150-170 into a long left-to-right slanted green. They’ve also changed the former #3 (now #5) into a par 5 playing from the back tees – it’s a lot easier par 5 than it was a par 4, but it’s still a solid test.

Now, about the conditions – overall this is the best I’ve seen the course since the Nationwide Tour event was out there. Fairways are excellent, bunkers are in good shape (a little heavy but plenty of real sand) and the rough is pretty consistent and thick. Lots of leaves so keep a good eye on your ball if it’s headed offline.

Regular greens are also excellent, rolling a smidge slow by normal Soboba standards but very smooth and hold shots well. Temp greens won’t hold shots much and coverage is a little thin but they rolled quite good (little faster than the regular greens).

Biggest challenge right now are yardages on the temporary holes and remembering to allow for a lot of bounce and roll when hitting into the those greens.

As for the future – I’ve seen the plans for the revised 13-16 and it appears very nice. They’ve preserved the green complexes from the former #14 & 15 to use for the renovation and #15 looks like it will still be a beast of a par 3 (though not as long as during the tour days). Late summer is the target for the restoration but wouldn’t be surprised if it takes longer (especially if they let those holes grown in a bit before they start play). No idea what’s going to happen with rates – currently can get a decent price but that may change when they finish the renovations.

At the current rates it’s a decent choice and value – the untouched holes are in great shape and the temp holes aren’t too bad so it kinda balances out.

Played late morning 12/3, started as a single but finished as a foursome (more on that later).

This course continues to show steady improvement. Generally, tees were good to very good with only a few areas that weren't level or had significant divot damage. Fairways still have some bare spots (especially #9) but it's obvious they're working on the issue. Lies were definitely above average, decent to good coverage/thickness. All the extra "crap" past the rough has disappeared, rough near the fairway is 'hit and miss" - some is pretty thick, other areas not so much.

Bunkers were good, more dirt than sand but consistent with enough depth to allow true explosion-type shots. Greens were smooth and rolled fairly fast, not too many ball-marks -
only complaint would be the lips around the holes are a little shaggy and not cut precisely.

Pace of play was, unfortunately, dreadfully slow. First 6 holes took right about an hour, next 12 took 3.5 hours. Caught and joined a twosome on the 7th tee, added a single on #9, then plodded along on the back nine. When I've been out in the morning it's been quick so I'm attributing it to the weekend and some VERY casual golfers.

Paid $25 late morning on a Sunday, including cart - given the current conditions that's outstanding! Definitely worth the money.

Played last Wednesday, spur of the moment round. Was paired with Ernie, nice guy, walking and pretty slow but we still kept up with the foursome in front of us.

Conditions were about as good as I’ve seen here in at least a couple years. Greens were a little bumpy but serviceable, some you can see the encroachment of the surrounding grass onto the putting surface itself but they still rolled decently at medium speed. Fairways had good coverage, rough was fairly consistent and somewhat thick – not enough to require a wedge-out but enough that you had to take it into consideration when making your club choice.

Tees had several spots that weren’t level at the markers but all had level spots within a useful (legal) distance behind. Biggest disappointment were the bunkers – most had little or no sand, just hard dirt and I only found a rake once (though they didn’t really need raking due to how hard they were). Not a long course but greens are quite small so you need to either be spot-on with approaches or have a solid short game.

Nothing fancy here, no real “signature” holes but a good value for the price and conditions. Recommended.

Played Thursday, went out as a single. Quick warmup on the range (mats, not grass), then started on the 10th due to a ladies event on the front nine.

When I called to set up my tee time, nobody mentioned they had punched/sanded greens and were overseeding the tees. While the greens actually rolled better/faster than expected, ALL the tees were set up in front of the red plates - sometimes as much as 20 yards shorter. Had I known that I would probably have waited another week or two.

The remainder of the course was in quite good condition (except the bunkers, more on those below). It's pretty flat but has some artificial contours in fairways and around greens, need to be fairly accurate due to trees lining every hole. Greens are on the smallish size, with a couple exceptions, and several have ridges/multiple tiers/small tucked away sections that can make life miserable if you're in the wrong place. Fairways had very good coverage and the rough has been recently overseeded, varying from "not bad" to "Where'd my ball go?!?!?" .

As for the bunkers - they are definitely the weakest part of the course. All had very heavy/wet sand and several had standing water in the low areas.

Pace of play was excellent, caught and passed a twosome after about 4 holes, then another several holes later - finished in 3 hours even. Would have been a little quicker but actually caught up to the last of the women's group on the approach to #7 (my #16).

My Group Golfer voucher was for $30 and given the green conditions and tee locations, that should have been even lower. Give it 2-3 weeks and that would be a great value and would be a good deal even at a significantly higher price.

Played a couple weeks ago with Nicksquire and 14Over - big thanks to Nick for setting it up and providing the coupon!

I put off writing this review because there was something that was percolating just below the surface and I couldn't put my finger on what it was. After last week at Hemet Golf Club and yesterday at Oak Valley I finally figured out what it was.

While I have no complaints about either this or the Palm course, I left both feeling kinda "meh . . . whatever". Both are filled with good solid holes that provide a good challenge, but (at least to me anyway), they both lacked "soul" or "personality". Excellent for their intended purpose of providing a golf getaway while never leaving the resort, if it wasn't for the pre-seeding dryness of the Palm course I wouldn't have known which course (or hole) I was on.

Would I play them again? Sure! - but probably not at their regular rates. Maybe it's just me, but Golf has a very significant spiritual component - an emotional connection between me, my game and the course itself. For me that seemed to be missing here.

I'm not trying to discourage anyone from playing here, and others might disagree with my take on it - however, for me, there are a number of courses I'd pick first, even if they were in lessor condition.

Played Wednesday with SBogey as a GK Guru. The conditions are amazing for late summer, especially with the heat wave of the last few days.

Fairways were as good as when I played during peak season, lush enough for excellent lies but still providing a decent amount of roll. One on the front side had a few bare spots (I think #5?) but that was the only blemish on the entire course. Rough was also excellent, not too thick to be really penal but enough to make you think about your shot - also framed the fairways nicely.

Greens had a light dressing, didn't do much to minimize breaks but the last 2-4 feet slowed down a little more than normal. Slightly on the firm side but would hold well struck shots. Rough around the greens was thick enough to make putting from off the green a challenge - if putting with the grain you're fine but against would snag the ball quickly so probably just better of chipping. Sand was good quality, a little heavy and damp under the surface but very consistent. They are converting to what they call "Australian" style raking - that means leaving the sides firm and smooth so most shots roll down to the flatter middle area.

One or two tees were a little uneven and the White tees on # 11 were located on a nearly bare spot - Moving them up a couple yards or back 3-4 would have cured that issue. Couple others could use a trim of the vegetation directly in front of the tee, low ball hitters could have an issue. Very little damage even on the par 3's.

Played in a little under 3 hours, could have gotten off earlier and played a little faster but we were pacing ourselves with the heat - wouldn't have mattered since we caught a foursome on #17. It was actually pretty comfortable up until about #11 or #12, then the heat started cranking up and it started getting a little muggy - we were definitely both done by the time we hit #18.

Staff was excellent, same for the range - it's in better conditions than most course's fairways at the moment. This is a very nice layout in WAY above average condition for this time of year, highly recommend getting out here soon (but play REALLY early or wait for a little cooler temps).

Ended up in Pasco for the day with clubs in hand and decided to check out it out. Advertising states it's the highest rated course in S/E Washington and has been selected "Best place to play" in the area 5 years running.

While I don't have much to compare it to, but based on the facilities and conditions it's going to be tough to beat. It's also the highest priced in the area ($53 including cart, basic GPS and a small bucket of balls) but not by a lot so that shouldn't be a factor. If it was in SoCal it wouldn't really stand out but would definitely be a course I'd throw in the mix on a regular basis.

The layout has an entertaining and challenging mix of holes and enough up and down to keep you on your toes. A couple potentially drivable par 4's (though I'm not sure the risk is worth the reward), par 3's that play different directions with different looks, plus par 5's that MAY be reachable in two but are very playable as a 3-shot hole for almost anyone.

Conditions ranged from good to very good throughout. Tees were probably the worst but none were in poor shape and all were essentially level. Rough was medium length but fairly dense and balls sat more on top instead is nestling down. Bunker were good with plenty of sand and firm but not muddy texture.

The highlight of the course are the fairways and greens. Excellent coverage on the fairways and just the right amount of cushion. Greens rolled smoth and true at medium fast speed and lots of contour. The 12th hole (par 3) features a 12,000 sq ft green - it's a short hole and easy hit the green but you may not have enough club to get it to the hole!

Service was friendly and professional, grass driving range was quite much nice and a large practice green so no crowding even on busy days. Cafe pricing was very reasonable and the French Fries were tasty.

Definitely recommended.

Played a Birthday round here yesterday, teed off at 6:50 paired up with Bob. POP was fairly quick but very casual, waited once on group in front and had someone catch us on #17, finished in 3:30.

For years, this course has been the “red-headed stepchild” of the Temecula area. However, at least for me personally, this is no longer the case. Conditions were good to very good throughout. Fairways had good coverage with a few scattered thin spots (#8), tees were in good shape (except #5, it was terrible but it’s location means it’s probably impossible to keep it in good shape). Rough was medium length and thickness, getting a lot thicker around the greens. Sand was above average, nothing spectacular but consistent.

Greens were somewhat soft, held even longer shots fairly well. Putted very smooth at medium speed. These are the highlight of the course – many holes have different tiers and/or depressions/bowls – be on the correct level or pay the price (four 3-putts on the front 9 before I got the hang of the speed and break!)

The layout itself is a little quirky with quite a bit of up/down on probably 1/2 the holes. A few pretty short par 4's, but don't assume they'll play easy. Some are considerably uphill, other's have water right in front of the green - combine that with some diabolical pin placements on those holes and it's definitely provides a solid challenge.

Compared to the Rancho California course just a couple miles away, I thought this course was a clear step above in conditioning. Better pricing and conditioning = better value - I'll be visiting this course much more often than it's neighbor.

Also, have to comment about the pictures in the entry walkway. Each hole is dedicated to a golf "Legend" and they have a picture of each next to their respective hole. Ranging from Tom Morris to Jack, Arnie, Lee, Gary, Annika . . . it's a nice touch.

Played last Wednesday as the first off at 6:30 - was paired up by the starter with a twosome but they wanted to play by themselves so I ended up as a single. No need to rush, the Men's Club was starting a "reverse shotgun" on #13 at about 8 (caught them on #14).

Conditions were quite mixed. Greens were all good, rolled well at medium-fast pace but were a little spongy and the bunkers were heavy but good. Rough was hit & miss, some very thick, some barely there. The fairways were the same, some in good shape but most were quite patchy and some had several marginal areas. Tees were good condition and level (except #16, someone buried a medium sized whale under the white section, VERY crowned and not a flat spot to be found!).

This is a very solid layout but I'm used seeing it in better condition. Still a decent value but hopefully they bring things up a little in the near future.
