I played here with an Under Par voucher. Excellent course. It was a 10 minute cart ride to the first tee! Water hazards abound out here but nothing is tricked up in any way. If you have never played here pay attention to the stone tablets near each tee indicating the layout of the hole and roughly where the water hazards are. Only a few are not readily visible from the tee. As usual in a desert course the layout meanders among the resident houses. But, there are holes ( 1, 14-18) that venture out into the desert openness. The greens where a bit slow. It is understandable as they take a beating from the heat and sun. I played the Cielo/Vista nines. There is also a Lagos nine. Get your Under Par voucher today and play here!!! Don't forget your water.

This is a needed update to my last post on the Wilson course. The course has deteriorated a bit. Many greens, not all, are dried out. They display remnant hole plugs from long ago aerification. Some greens are better than others. The fairways on some holes were chopped up. I am thinking especially of number 7. What a mess. The tee boxes on 7 were a mess to. The drought is taking a toll. There are many dry spots out here. However, some parts of the course are actually lush and nice. The fairway on 18 was gorgeous...... But, the greens right now are still much better than they were in the 90's. The greens back in those days were more rough than fairways at a private course.

I finally got around to playing here. The course conditions were excellent. The putting green was very tricky. If you putt well here, you will have no problem on the course. You will need lag skills on these greens. Unless you are a suburb ball striker or short game wizard, you will face very long putts. These greens are enormous. The fairways are very generous as well. With the exception of holes 7, 8,12 you can try for extra distance without worrying too much about finding trouble. Just keep your balance...
The course is walkable for those who want more exercise. What stood out most to me, was the friendliness of the staff. I am looking forward to making the long drive to play here again in a SCGA tournament.

A course where I never play well but enjoy walking it nonetheless. The first 3 greens were not good. I think there is some disease on them or they just haven't recovered well from being punched. From 4 on the greens got better. The ball rolled less wobbly and more true. The fairways were very nice. I love this layout. I am trying to get my work buddies to play here at least once. Getting a tee time is a challenge but worth the effort. With only private courses nearby like Hillcrest CC, Brentwood CC, and LACC, Rancho Park is a gem for muscle class golfers like myself.

Admiral Baker North is a gem that is affordable. The greens show plenty of scars from aerifying but still run at a medium speed and are surprisingly very smooth. The layout is open. But trees and trouble do await you if you spray it too much. The course has moments of difficulty especially with the wind we had today. Number 7 is a severely penalizing par 3 if the green is missed left or right. Number 11 is a very challenging dogleg left par 4 with trouble right and left the entire hole. Near holes 1, 18, 17, 16, 11, and off course property is a steep incline that in windy conditions produces wind directions that are hard to judge. I highly recommend this fun course that has great customer service by every employee and has many of of its golfers being our military heroes so responsible for our Liberty and Freedom.

It has been 18 years since the last time I have played here. They have added a new set of tees. The old blues are now the blacks. The old white tees are now the blue tees. Some of the tee boxes looked liked they were verti-cut and were fluffy. The greens were nice. They are not as fast as you think especially going uphill. I believe they will aerify soon. While the group in front of us were not slow the two men punished themselves by playing from the blacks at over 7000 yards. Watching their swings and ball flight and it was obvious they were not worthy. Were they showing off with the two ladies they were with? To me and all in my group they looked like fools. The clubhouse and restrooms have been redone and are very nice. I want to play here again but not in 18 years but in 18 days.

I heard the South course had maintenance issues. Well, whatever they were they have been fixed. The greens were in great shape. The bunkers were to. The fairways were ok. I saw lots of bare spots on the fairways and rough. I enjoyed this course more than I expected. An easy course like this one can disappoint. Expect too much and golf has a way of humbling you. If you are in the area they have nice waterproof golf shoes on sale.

If the banquet, buffet, or feast is equivalent to a Pebble beach or even a Sandpiper this course is the scraps, and morsels. But these leftovers were perfect for me to enjoy today's golf while keeping thrift and frugality virtuous. (These virtues made Calvin Coolidge a great president...) I enjoyed this course thoroughly. The greens were amazing!! Some putts had several feet of break. But they were not to too hard to read. The greens at Los Verdes are harder to read in my opinion. It was tough to rate the fairways because I was never in them. Fortunately, there is not one demanding tee shot. The 4 times I did hit the fairway, I had a good lie. To me, the signature hole is number 13. A gorgeous downhill hole from the tee box with the Pacific on the right and visible through the trees behind the green.

The General is a very difficult course right now. The entire course needs to be softened and aerified. It is very easy to miss a green out here. The will often roll forever and not where you want it to leaving difficult chips and pitches. Problem is if you have a pitch good luck trying to keep it on the green. A solution that worked well for me was to putt even from places well off the green. The fairways are awful. Clumps of grass and bare spots abound. The greens did putt fast and smooth. I would rate them even higher if they weren't so unreceptive.
I always say a silent Thank You when I hear a gun salute from the cemetery next door honoring men and women who served our country and strove to make the world a better place. Or Thank You to that family member who spent a lot of time wondering if their loved one would come home in a time of war.

Wow! There are more gopher holes here than craters on the planet Mercury. Fairways do not exist. I feel bad for those who have put money into course over the last 25 years only to lose the battle with the methane gas. The greens are a whole different mouse trap. They are near immaculate. You get a very true roll not too fast and not too slow. The contrast between the condition of the greens and the rest of the course is probably not matched by any other course on this planet, including Mercury. Don't forget 1 million sun block if you want to play there....

Taxi!!!!! Hit a House!!!! I have never played a public course under 50$ with green speeds like they were today at Encino and Balboa. Encino? Balboa? Yes!!! For 36 holes I had 8 3 putts including many where I used a putter just off the green. Both courses humbled me today. The ground is very hard on the rest of the course. While you get a lot off roll, it is difficult to hit it crisp off of semi-hardpan to hard-pan lies. A crisp strike was necessary to hit and hold these very fast greens today. With rain in the forecast soon things should soften up a bit.

Chester is the kind of course where you think you should score well based on your initial look of the scorecard and the look of the course not having many hazards and OB. But don't let that fool you. The postage stamp size greens surrounded by nasty velcro like grass forces you to be accurate of the tee so that you can be precise with your approach. For over 30 years I have walked off this course many times thinking I could have played better while shooting the same mediocre score. The course today had great fairways. The greens were decent but a little too bumpy. On the back 9 you must take into account that putts tend to break towards El Segundo Blvd. I noticed some fairway bunkers have been added to the course. This has made the longer par 4's even tougher.
