My HS daughter and I played on Saturday April 29th. I played from the blues and she played from the yellow or ladies tees because the junior tournament the next day was playing from those tees. Overall, the course conditions were ok. Some of the tee boxes were rock hard and I actually broke a tee just trying to tee it up. Hint: look for existing tee holes. Fairways were fine. I didn't have any bare spot lies. I didn't have any bunker shots so I can't comment on them, but they appeared to be somewhere between hard dirt and country club white sand. The greens were kind of bumpy but acceptable, just short of having no confidence of making any putts. However, my daughter made 4 birdie putts the next day so I'm pretty sure she was okay with them. The course itself is not that long but it requires some course management. You can't just yank out your driver on every hole. As I recall the short fourth hole requires you to leave it about 80 yards short of the green. You can easily hit your drive through the dog legs on many of the holes. Some of the greens are also much more sloped than you think and it is highly advisable to leave the shot below the hole. I'd probably like one more shot at the course and I'm pretty sure I would hit a couple of more tee shots with my 3 wood instead of my driver. I wouldn't play this course if it were my choice but I wouldn't turn it down if I were invited. The two real complaints I have would be the gopher holes all over the place and the poor condition of the range balls. The balls were much better two months ago. Pace of play was over 5 hours starting at about 1:30 but it got better as the day went along so I don't think it got to the "I will never go back to this d%mn course!" 6 hour mark. Middle of LA so what do you expect. Look forward to playing the longer Wilson course some time. PS. My daughter shot a one under the next day so I'm sure she has nice things to say about the course.

We played this course on 7/6. Just an outstanding experience! Our home course is currently under reconstruction so we've mostly played public courses in the interim. Skylinks and Rio Hondo have been our go to courses when we want some relief from the lousy munis that my daughter's tournaments are held at and we have to go play a practice round. Old Ranch was a reminder of how great a private club can be: friendly staff, good looking facilities, nice driving range, terrific pace of play and immaculate course conditions. The layout is not tremendously difficult, but it is certainly difficult enough. All three of us who played (low to middle single digit handicaps) would probably describe the course as enjoyable. If the course were a little closer, I might have joined for a couple of years until our own course was back. If you are thinking of joining a private club, you should really consider this course.

2ND WORST GREENS I'VE EVER PLAYED ON. Played on 7/21 in the afternoon. Had not played here in awhile, probably about a year or more. The biggest reason was the greens, and afterwards it remains the biggest reason not to play at this oh so promising course. The greens were easily worse than I remembered and might rank as the second worst greens I have played on in my life. The worst was Chester Washington about 15 years ago, when I vividly recalled a flattened dandelion in front of my putt. The greens at Los Amigos were ungodly slow and bumpy. There is also no fringe to speak of. You have to wonder if the folks who run this course know what golf is. There are also square patches here and there. Some greens also look like they are going to die they are so brown. I did not expect exquisite greens like I experienced at Old Ranch recently, but Chester Washington greens feel like heaven compared to Los Amigos'. And just two days ago, we played the front 9 at Alondra and those would be a relief compared to Los Amigos. If you play at Los Amigos, you obviously don't care at all about putting and you must play quick because your playing partners are used to giving you the putt if it is anywhere near several feet of the hole. Sorry folks, but if you are used to Los Amigos' greens you don't know anything about golf or don't give a s___ about putting. You really should just stop playing at Los Amigos to get the point across that the putting greens are unacceptable. It really pains me to say such harsh things here because this course has so much potential. They've really done a nice job with the fairways. The tee grounds are very uneven, but they use real sand in the bunkers. They have a nice practice area and the range has decent golf balls. You can see where your ball lands on the range. The guy in the pro shop was nice too. But after a handful of holes, it really becomes unbearable. At best, Los Amigos is a practice course. You get to hit tee shots and shots from a halfway decent fairway, but putting at Los Amigos is an absolute joke and I actually made several long putts. If Los Amigos had Victoria's greens, it would be one of the nicest courses around. Personally, I will probably never come back until I hear from someone I know that the greens have improved. The Golf Gods would probably be angry with such greens.

We played on Friday 6/24/16. After playing here in February for a practice round for my daughter's junior tournament, I kind of swore off this place, and, although she won the tournament, we both decided the course conditions were awful and never wanted to go back. The fairways were probably the worst we've seen all year anywhere although the greens were okay. Well, I guess you can never say never. We agreed to take a friend of my daughter's to play there because she also has a tournament coming up and had never played there before. A couple of the holes on the back 9, 12 and 15, are kind of tricky in that you just can't hit your next shot without considering exactly how far to hit (see their nice app). We are pleased to report that conditions have improved. The fairways are much greener. Earlier in February, it felt like every other shot in the fairway barely had any grass under it and the rough was basically dirt. Although the fairways are in better shape, they are terribly inconsistent. #8's fairways looked like they haven't improved at all. Others looked like they were just aerated and we got some unlucky lies in unrepaired divots. In certain respects, it is almost easier to hit off flat bare spots. The rough was decent, although some spots they're going overboard on the watering it seems. And then there are holes with way too many gopher holes and mounds (#10). I don't care too much about tee boxes other than they should be fairly flat, and some of them weren't. At the edges, you're almost falling backwards. The greens were a lot bumpier than we remembered although the speed was only slightly slower than we're used to. The bunkers were inconsistent. I was in two of them. One was hard (#14 green side; bunker is damaged or looks like crap on the back end.); the other was okay for a public course – not the nice white sand but sandy dirt (#8 green side ). POP was 4.5 hours starting around 2:15 so not bad. I rode and the two girls walked and we kept up with a somewhat mediocre foursome riding in carts ahead of us. It was not crowded. Otherwise, it's going to be an hour or more longer like it was in February during the weekend. My last thoughts are that this course has a lot of beginners or inexperienced golfers who just don't fix divots and ball marks. They really should educate them. They also let a lot of branches stick out way too far into the fairways to make the tee shots tougher. They really need to cut those. They don't need to make this course tougher. It is what it is. It's not a tough track overall. Let the 20 handicappers play on a course with decent conditions and have a good time. One last thing: this course is not great for left to right golfers like me. They really let the trees grow (and the aforementioned branches that stick out) on the left side on the many dogleg lefts. Anyway, unless my daughter comes up with another friend who can use some advice during a practice round for a tournament, or conditions are overwhelmingly good at least, we are not coming back to this course. I paid $49 and it wasn't worth it. I'm a 5 index, and I would prefer to pay say $20-$30 extra to play at a decent course. If the cost was $35, it might not be too bad in terms of value I suppose. Positives: Again, although they have a way to go, the improvement in the fairways was promising; the folks in the pro shop were friendly; they have a helpful app.

While not great, some pleasant surprises when we played on Sunday, Feb 28, 2016. We played this course last fall, and the conditions were awful. Bare spots galore and the greens had weird repair jobs (patching up bare spots with cup cutouts). And, of course, the infamous 6 hour round. However, this time the fairways were much improved (okay - not great, the truly bare spots appeared to be confined to the rough) and the greens were in nice condition, save a few bumpy greens. There were also fewer ball marks on the greens. Pace of play wasn't great. We just assumed it would be a six hour round, especially since there were fivesomes for seemingly every group, including ours. For whatever reason though, the pace picked up and didn't have to wait for a shot after the 10th hole after waiting to play for the entire front 9. The estimated time of play was about five and a half hours instead of six. Given the improved fairways and greens, I might be okay with playing Lakewood more often if I can be assured of a less than 5.5 hour rounds. About the only negative were the bird droppings on the first two tees. It was disgusting teeing off on 1 and 2. Almost of forgot, when I called to see if I can fit in another player in our threesome, I was told that a twosome had been already paired with us. The started offered to see if the twosome could be persuaded to join another group. We declined the offer, but I was pleased by their helpfulness.

We played on Saturday afternoon 2/20 and played only 9. What a perfect day for golf! Perhaps a little cool but probably not for the fellow warming up next to us on the range saying how he had been wearing two pairs of warm underwear before he had just arrived in LA. We practice here often. It is nice to be able to see where the ball lands on the range. Plus, the sunsets are SO INCREDIBLE! No wonder there are weddings seemingly all the time. That said, my daughter and I rarely play this course mostly due to slow pace of play and, for me, lousy fairways. We usually try to play 18 somewhere once a week, but, since we only had time for 9, we figured we were okay with slow play for 9 holes (HS matches only play the front 9 anyway). Well, we mostly got what we expected: slow play, weeds and bare spots in the rough, INCREDIBLE VIEWS, and, as always, friendly customer service. Unexpected: terrific greens (not too soft or too hard, mostly smooth, fast, and hardly any ball marks [is this due to better behavior or players' inability to hit greens with high iron shots?]) and improved fairways (less bald spots – at least my fairways shots were not penalized by shots out off dirt). It seems this course has reached a permanent equilibrium of sorts. We finished 9 as the sun was setting and I asked some players who were finishing the 18th how long their round was. It took them 6 hours, on par with the 3 hours it took us to finish the front 9. Thus, the hardcore folks don't care about the 6 hours. The views are nice; they probably live nearby; and don't belong to the nearby private clubs (plus RHCC is under construction) so they don't have a choice. As for the rest who pack the course, it looks like the views trump the slow pace of play. Also, I've noticed travelers as of late. This is easily the most scenic public course closest to the airport. Personally, while I'm unhappy with the pace of play, the rate wasn't too high (go online), and did I mention the views. I would be happier if they charged a little more (say $10 or $20 more for 18 – residents of Palos Verdes are rich enough to afford it!) and improved the conditions (no bare spots on the fairway, grass within 10 yards of the fairways and greens); and they added black tees by moving the blue tees up a little (too many lousy players play from the blues - the two front 9 par 3s had me hitting a 5 iron and a 4 hybrid [about 180 and 200 although the listed yardages were a little less] challenging enough for a 5 indexer like me, but, if you haven't broken 90 in the past month, you shouldn't be playing from way back which the tees were at. ). Again, six hour pace of play really gives me pause for playing 18. Slow play really screws with my concentration, but 9 holes of slow play is I guess okay especially with the great views.

It was Super Bowl Sunday, so it wasn't too busy. I can't remember how long it took but it wasn't too bad although we waited half the time. I think most folks went home at 9 holes since we teed off at around 10:30. I believe we were done in about 4.5 hours. We played here a few months ago, and the fairways and rough were awful – lots of bare spots. I figured after all the rain in January, the fairways would be a little better. Nope. Still awful. Seemed like there were bare spots in the fairways 1/3 of the time. Unless my daughter has a tournament here, it is unlikely we will come back. On the bright side, the greens were pretty good. Not too fast or slow. They also have a free app. The yardage information is kind of helpful on a couple of the tricky holes: 12 and 15. These holes have a water hazard (flood channel) on the tee shot. You're probably better off laying up on 12 (everyone) and 15 (if you can't carry 200 yards from the blue tees). Otherwise the course is pretty straightforward. Most of the holes don't have bunkers protecting the front. If you hit straight tee shots, you won't have too many problems. This would be a nice course with better fairway and rough conditions. Too bad.

I had seen some negative reviews about conditions and pace of play on Yelp. We also knew that the greens had just been aerated a week before, beginning of October, but, since my daughter had a tournament the following week, we didn't really didn't have a choice, and so our expectations were low. We mostly selected this tournament for her because she's just a middle schooler who has to compete with high schoolers and the course isn't too long. With an 8:50 Sunday 10/18/15 tee time, we were expecting a long day, but we were pleasantly surprised. They had decided not to aerate the greens, and we (1 rider and 2 walkers) were done in four hours. When I later inquired about the pace of play, we just had gotten lucky in that it just wasn't that busy at the time. The nice kid who was working the carts return mentioned that he teed off at 7 and it took him 5 hours, which was more typical. The greens were okay. As mentioned by the helpful starter, the greens had not been mowed that morning, so they were a little slower than usual. He predicted that the greens were probably going to be a little faster at the following week's tournament (my daughter reported they were). The kid working the carts return said the greens can get bumpy, but we didn't think they were too bad that day. Because of its short length, the course isn't too difficult even with water on several holes because they can easily be avoided, and there aren't too many bunkers, with some holes having none. However, it isn't clear on several holes as to how far the water is. As a rule, probably just better to leave it 100 yards short on the short par 4s and figure out yardages for next time (or use a GPS with yardages to hazards). I hit a six iron about 170 and ended up with a horrible angle on the short 8th hole. Should have only hit it 150 to avoid most of the water and trees. All in all, the course was better than expected with some interesting holes (water, drivable par 4, false green edge on one of the holes). As for negatives, the rough was awful. It is apparent that they have decided to focus irrigation and maintenance on the fairways which had decent coverage (better than Lakewood and maybe Rec Park). While there were some holes that had something akin to traditional rough (as in long grass), other holes had large sections of just bare dirt in some cases. I guess this is an acceptable trade-off, in stark contrast to Victoria which has large sections of dirt in the middle of the fairway and decent grass in the rough right next to it (go figure - nice greens though). The other negative was the bunkers, which barely had any sand. They were rock hard. Bottom line, a nice little course that just needs some more attention to the rough. Wouldn't mind playing there again if my daughter has another tournament to prepare for.

NOTE: ALERT WAS INACCURATE. IT HAD BEEN ONLY A WEEK OR SO SINCE AERATION, NOT SEPT 8, 9 AS REPORTED ON THIS SITE. Played with my daughter and her golf buddy from middle school. A beautiful day for golf! First time ever at the course. Only got to play the front 9 even though we started at 3 because of homework. No groups around us until about half way through (there was a high school match that started around 2 I think). Once we caught up, we had to wait a little, but not too much. Got done in under 2 hours, so that was nice. The reason we picked Rec Park 18 was because it was reported that El Dorado and Skylinks were having all or half of their greens aerated. I got the impression that the Rec Park aeration had been done a few weeks back. Nonetheless, the greens weren't that bad. They weren't too slow and wasn't as bumpy as it looked. Should be nice when the greens fully recover. As for the rest of the course, the fairways were okay. A few slightly bare spots but not horrible like the hard dirt shots you have to sometimes hit from at Victoria. We didn't like the tiny green of the par 3. They apparently alternate between two greens and got stuck with the obviously lesser of the two. We thought we were transported to Alondra's Par 3 course. The fairways were incredibly wide. Kind of nice after playing at Rio Hondo a few days ago. In the end, my daughter and I both agreed that it was a nice course, so we look forward to playing the rest of the course next time. We definitely still think Rio Hondo and Skylinks are in better shape and are more interesting, but, again, we only played the front 9. Other notes: I rode and the carts have GPS which was nice. The driving range has very few stalls. We've played at Rec Park 9 on a weekend before and wanted to practice before playing so we dropped by here, but no go. There were plenty of open stalls today but I wouldn't count on it on a busy day. It looks like there are nice areas for short game practice though. The young guy at the golf shop was very pleasant. We will be back.

My middle school daughter had a tournament here during the summer, and so I played a practice round with her. After playing at Lakewood, Los Verdes, Victoria and other drought affected courses, my daughter or her playing partner commented that the fairways were "like carpet!" We were also impressed with the greens. They were smooth and just the right speed. The course itself isn't the toughest. Even with water on a number of holes, they always give you an out. Nonetheless, we decided it was a nice course, esp. with the POP being around 4 hours. With another tournament in late Sept., we played another round on Sunday, Sept. 20. We knew the greens had just been aerated on Monday, so we didn't expect the same nice fast greens we saw during the summer, but the rest of the course was in decent shape. It was almost 100 degrees on Sunday, but we still had fun. Perhaps because of the heat and aeration it wasn't as crowded, but amazingly we (a foursome) were done in under four hours! My daughter has never played a U.S. Kids Tour event, but we're thinking of entering those because I heard they regularly hold tournaments at Rio Hondo. More excuses to play at this fine course. It is perhaps a little more pricey, but when courses are in great shape, it is just so worth it. Nice folks in the shop too. Just be careful of the cramped stalls on the practice range.

My daughter and I played this course three times over the last two months (late July and twice right after Labor Day). Each time it was in the early afternoon during the week as she was out of school. After playing on courses in the South Bay (Los Verdes, Harbor, Alondra, Victoria), it was nice to play on a course with actual green fairways. The greens were also surprisingly smooth and fast. Although the first time took about five hours, the second time took less than four hours to complete, and we were on a four and a half hour pace on the third time. Thus, the pace of play and the conditions of the course really did it for us. Also, we appreciated the GPS they have in the carts, which even measures the distance to the pin on that particular day. I'm guessing that the tougher greens and bunkers on this course (one of the playing partners we got paired up with who said he usually plays at El Dorado kept saying, "These greens are crazy!"), keeps the beginner players away from this course, which is fine with us. Folks who can't break 100 will find this course difficult. We will likely go back again, especially if she has another tournament there. The staff was also very nice. Perhaps this course is a little pricier than the rest in the area, but the conditions and the pace of play make this course worth it. After trying Los Amigos, Rio Hondo, Lakewood and the South Bay munis during the summer, my daughter and I concluded that Skylinks and Rio Hondo were our favorites despite the higher prices.
