What a pleasant surprise to find such a jewel tucked back in a beautiful canyon.
I have actually played this course several times over the last 20 years and enjoyed every single one of them.
Only 9 holes but a nice mix of tight and open fairways. Green speeds seem to vary from a little slow to a little fast so learning them helps to improve the score. Most roll pretty true.
Fairways and bunkers (I try to avoid them) are usually in very nice shape.
The scenery is such a pleasant change from what we usually see.
Regardless of how well I score or don't score, I always enjoy a round of golf here.

There used to be several reviews on this course and a score card listed.
I played here many times in the 80's. My parents lived nearby and I would play when we came to visit.
I always enjoyed it and the course always seemed to be in pretty fair shape.
My son and I would tee off around 6:30 and pay our green fees at the turn.
I guess that doesn't happen anymore.
Progress.

Hit off of mats: Bad for practice, Good for maintenance
Mostly target golf, short shots: Good for practice.
Fairways: Playable, no problem.
Greens: Didn't see any. They are like playing of shag carpet. Definately the worst part of this course. Putting
Practice suggestion: Hit the green and pick up. Speeds up play and doesn't ruin your putting stroke.

Played here for the first time on 2/26 and enjoyed the course.
It is fair and interesting. The greens are a tad testy the first time around, slower than I expected and a lot of subtle breaks that are not always easy to see.
There is no rough to speak of. Every fairway is lined with environmental terrain, so keep it in play or bring a few extra balls. For the most part the course is right there in front of you and very playable.
The fairways although in winter dormancy, are in good shape and you get some roll here.
I will be back mid May to mid June and see the course in its new spring/summer colors.

I always enjoy a trip around this little course. It is short, but if you aren't on your short game you will walk away scratching your head.
The greens are a tad slow usually but pretty well kept. The two par 4's will eat you alive if you get sloppy.

All in all, a bunch of fun.

This is a must play little course especially for OC residents. You won't find another course like this one that has an opportunity to see canyons, and wildlife along with the natural beauty of this location.
I have played here numerous times over the last 30+ years and it's always a joy to come back here.

Does the name Ben Brown's ring any bells?

Give it a try folks

Played Meadowlark on Monday the 31st of July and was pleasantly surprised compared to last time I played here, which has been awhile.
The course is ideal for the shorter hitters as most par 4's and all par 5's
are very reachable.
There are some sutlties to get you in trouble if you get lazy.
Fun course, took about 4 and 1/2 hours to complete the round.
Fairways were in pretty good shape, greens ehh ok, but after a weekend
of hammering I guess that's sort of normal for a Monday morning.
Sand traps (I was in two) are generously filled with fluffy sand. A few were way over watered, maybe run off from the greens, but wet sand is no fun.
Will return.

I play here fairly often and the condition always seems to amaze me with the amount of traffice usually found here.
This morning was a rare and special treat.
Arrived at 7:00 a.m. as a single, hit two putts, and was called. Tee'd pff at 7:10 as a twosome (unheard of) and another single caught up with us on the second green. We never saw a group behind and we finally caught the group in front on #13 tee.
Done and driving away at 10:55 and even shot a decent round.
Gotta love that but I'm sure it won't continue at this busy track.
I love this place.

Hey countryhb, is Meadowlark a golf course now?

last time I was there, about 6 months ago, it was a cow pasture, with a few buildings on it.

Miserable place.

I have been playing this course off and on for approximately 30 years. It has never been in really good condition but the greens used to be kept in pretty nice shape.
My last round on 4/25 saw everything here in the worst condition I have ever seen it.
The greens were lumpy, bumpy, and a variety of speeds three weeks after aeration. Looks like they punched them and mowed them a couple times to remove the plugs and thats it.
Bunkers were another mixed bag. Some nice, some like concrete.
Fairways which are always fair at best were horrible. A lot of them had clumps of some kind of weed/grass scattered around in sufficient quantity.
With there green fees at the level they are, I would say that Rancho SJ is headed to Condo Land. It's a shame what American golf has done for this course.
