The poor condition of the greens made scoring well here impossible. Slow with pock marks made the shortest of putts missable. Some were pretty sandy like they'd been aerated recently, which seems odd given that it is mid-July. I would have expected a discounted green fee at a course that had greens this bad. TPC is going to have to perform a miracle to get the greens ready for the President's Cup to be held here is a couple years.
Otherwise the course is fairly easy, without a lot of hazards in play. Turf was in great shape and well manicured. Very scenic San Francisco setting.

I only play this course about once a year because it's a little pricy ($95 Friday) compared to the other public courses in the area. Interesting to me at least is the green fees haven't gone up since they opened 10 years ago, meaning that they've been overpriced for a long time. The greens here used to be super smooth and fast, with lots of breaks. Now the Poa Annua has invaded by about 50%, unfortunately making them bumpy and hard to read. Not much can be done about that though. Pace of play suffers because of the number of hazards, but this time around it was unusually slow at 5:15. They don't have a driving range here and the warm up net is really lame, having to pickup some dirty golf balls off the ground and hit off worn mats.

Played twighlight at 3:00 PM for only $40 with gps cart. A super deal for the quality of golf here. The fairways are nice and wide but still require some thinking on the tee to set up the second shot. The deep rough is tall fescue so don't hit it there. I'm used to putting on "broccoli heads" in California so these greens were great to putt on. Worth the trip to Colorado from anywhere.

Played June 10. I like this course because of the variety of holes it will make you hit every club in your bag. The course doesn't drain well so a wet winter like this year's makes it a slog. Now that it's dried out it's in great shape, but don't expect any roll on the fairways, they keep it pretty wet to get rid of wastewater. They've done a lot of work on their traps to make the sand fluffy which is nice. If they'd just mow their greens more often, and mow them a little closer it would really help scoring. Poa Annua is going to be bumpy, we know that, but it can be managed if it's mowed and rolled. All of the other area courses do it well. Slow and bumpy is what I see most often at Windsor (including today).

Played April 14. This course is west of Phoenix so it's in a little different terrain than most of the Valley of the Sun courses. The desert rough is a little more open so you can actually find a ball hit out there, but it's still pretty much a lateral water hazard unless you want to carry a rock club. The course has a country club feel and experience. Not all that pricey in April, and green fees include lunch! Enjoyed watching the F-16's flying over too.

Played April 13. This course is a ways out of town but well worth the drive. They could use some water cans on the front 9 or a faster drink cart, although when "Red" the drink cart girl came on shift she was right on schedule. Their customer service is great, and meant to get you around as efficiently as possible.

Played April 13. This is a very scenic course, with great views and lots of wildlife, including bobcats, rabbits, and roadrunners. The rates had just dropped for the season, so it was a good deal. Food and beverage service was great and timely. Proshop staff and bag handlers were surly and not much help. The locals we were paired with said when the season rates change and the number of golfers starts to drop the tip income drops so the help gets sort of crabby. The greens were not just firm and fast, they were hard! Good thing the course design allows for landing short and rolling on...the first hole we both landed our wedge shots in the middle and they bounced over in one big hop. The desert rough is unforgiving and full of snakes, so don't hit it there or forget about finding it if you do. Most of the greens are tiered and are supposed to allow for use of the slopes as backstops...call it fun but challenging.

Played April 12, almost exactly 13 months since my previous round here. This is my warm up course for my annual Scottdale area rota. This course has everything you expect in desert golf; firm fast fairways, and hard greens. My only complaint is that the greens were slow. Hard and slow is a bad combination for me to get the feel for the speed. Our group fell a little behind but the marshall was very tactful in asking us to pick it up; which we did without any problem, and we finished right on 4:15. I only mention it because to me it's a sign of good customer service, which was great all the way around. Fees are lower in the April "shoulder" season, and at $89 it makes this course a $$$ level.

Played 8/27/10. Took advantage of the NCGA discount i.e. free golf on my birthday. Otherwise I don't think I'd spend $70 to play here. They think they're a resort course, but conditions are really at muni level, although I have to admit that conditions were better this year than when I played here a year ago.

Staff is brusk, and acts like they're doing you a favor by letting you play there. Started with the cashier who led of with a "what do you want?" attitude and then gave me crap about only playing there on my birthday when it was free. We teed off and as we were getting in the cart some guy (apparently the starter) came running from somewhere unseen and yelled at us for teeing off, and complaining that he was going to pair us up. He warned us it would be slow as a twosome but with no pairing in sight he let us go. There is no drink cart, but there's a snack shack at the turn, if you happen to catch the guy there on your way through.

The Poa Annua greens here have been recently replaced with bent, and they are still pretty firm. Unfortunately the Poa Annua is already invading the bent so there are a few bumpy spots. The speed is highly variable.

They advertise themselves as a links style course, which I guess is true if you consider deep fairway bunkers, and lots of humps and bumps in the fairway to ensure you never have a level lie. Being on the coast the wind requires a links style knockdown and a run-up shot on several holes. Unfortunately the run-up area short of the greens doesn't lend itself to rolling the ball onto the green. They've attempted to mow it close but its really bumpy and unpredictable.

Pace of play is always a problem here because of the layout. There are two consecutive par threes on the front, and having to walk the 16th and 17th doesn't help. Views of the ocean and bay are nice, and make the 5 hour slog more bearable.

Played 8/15/10 with $45 NCGA discount for $145. This is one of at least three courses that were built as private club real estate deals in the Truckee area (Greys Crossing and Timilick are the others). The failed real estate market provides us working folks with a chance to play these private gems as resort courses, albiet pricey. Greenwood shows The Golden Bear's touches, like doglegs right, green complexes with one side steeply dropping into bunkers, and a misplaced shot results in shooting over a bunker to the green, while a well placed shot leaves a wide open green.

The course management is still mostly interested in selling real estate than they are pleasing us interlopers. They require cart path only on holes that can be seen from the clubhouse or the road into the course. Even their website emphisizes the real estate to the point that its hard to find the golf section.

As far as the golf...a 5-1/2 hour round pretty much detracts from course conditions and layout and makes for a miserable slog. I rated the rough really low because there really isn't any. There's a 2 inch cut along the sides of the fairway but the rough is just brush under pines, and any shot off the green grass is unplayable, or unfindable. We didn't see a marshall until the 13th hole (and 4 hours)...when I asked "who's leading this parade?" he just smiled and said a tournament had gone out before us. I asked how come a tournament can't be asked to play fast? Who am I kidding? They're not going to tell a bunch of potential land buyers to hurry.

I think pricey resort golf should provide as many amenities as possible to make the course as playable as possible...this should at least include a yardage book and a pin sheet, since its likely I'm not going to play the course often enough to know what lies ahead. It was obvious that the course hadn't been "layed out" for the day...e.g. 7 of the first 9 holes had back pin positions; the flags aren't color coded, and the greens are large enough to make a club difference on approach. I recommend sticking with Coyote Moon for resort golf in the pines. Greenwood is just more expensive and slower.

Played 8/13/10 with the NCGA $25 discount for $120. This course is highly touted as one of the 10 best in California and it lives up to its reputation. Every hole is scenic, and challenging. Tee shots are nicely framed against heavy pine forests and mountain views. They seem to like a lone tree in the fairway about 270 out at the corner. The greens are firm and fast but I'm afraid that the bent grass is being invaded by Poa Annua. There's light green dollar sized patches of Poa Annua scattered amongst the dark green bent grass which unfortunately makes the ball bounce as it rolls. I don't know that there's much that can be done about it though. The staff were all very attentive, especially the food and bev folks. I think it's chincy that they charge $4 for a yardage book...seems like a resort course should include all that stuff in the green fee. Its not so much the cost as it is the hassle when you realize you don't have a yardage book and have to run back to the proshop to get one. I would definately include CM in any Tahoe golf plans.

Played 8/12/10 and enjoyed it. Since Empire Golf took over this course the conditions have improved exponentially. Greens are firm, fast and smooth. Just get the putt started on line and the speed takes care of itself. The only part of the course that wasn't perfect was the traps which were water logged even at noon. Great internet deal at $46 with GPS cart and range balls. Very much a resort course feel with muni rates. The starter seemed to put some thought into our pairing so we played with a couple of guys close to our index, which we really appreciated. A great variety of hole layouts with doglegs, driveable par 4's and lots of elevated tees. We played on our way to Tahoe, and they have some Darkhorse/Tahoe golf specials. Play it!
