I had always heard great things about this course. So, we decided to play this past Sunday (9/8) and booked a tee time. This course at its present conditions is like a municipal course on the front 9 and country club status on the back 9. Having an early start we expected some dew, but the course was completely over-watered on the front 9. Fairway lies and areas around the green were soggy and mushy. The greens were full of pitch marks that were un-repaired and really affected the roll of the ball. Most greens on the front 9 looked like someone just went out there and decided to hit 200 golf balls onto the greens and didn't bother to repair any pitch marks. Things turned for the positive on the back 9, where somehow the greens looked completely different than the front. It was as if the front 9 greens were like a muni course and the back 9 greens belonged to a Country club. I was very impressed with the beauty, true roll, and interesting lay-out on the back 9. The course really sets you up to where all you see is the hole that you are playing and don't see other golfers around for the most part. The pace of play was amazingly fast, albeit we took our time without being rushed--we finished in exactly 4 hours! The course is also not particularly long, (never pulled driver out) and most holes I pulled a 4-iron on my drives from the tips just to lay up to a safe landing zone; since any errant shots will cost you a few lost balls and penalty strokes. Course management and accuracy is definitely a must here on this course! Would I come back and pay $90 for the course? NO. It still wasn't worth that rate, but it does have the potential if they do something about those greens and fairways on the front 9.

Played this past weekend (6/15) and I agree with most reviewers here. The course looks really dried out and fairway lies are very thin to nearly bare. In some areas, there are just patches of dirt with small clumps of grass; if you want to call that a fairway area. The greens were the best part in my opinion. A few pitch marks here and there, but generally fast greens with a decent roll (if your flat stick is working that day). Our partner complained of bumpiness, but his ball just rocketed off his putter face causing such bumpiness and he wasn't rolling the ball well on his putts. I found one green side bunker that played well and my result was predictable based on the lie. Overall, I would rate the golf course at best at 6.5 out of 10. With summer around the corner, this course is going to get really baked if they don't irrigate a little more. Won't be back until reviews improve.

CHECK-IN: Staff is not the friendliest (Trip), but they are doing their job in keeping guests teeing off on time. We played on Friday 5/3 at 12:00 p.m., which with the wind made things very interesting and challenging.

FAIRWAYS/ROUGH: The course conditions are top-notch right now. The fairways were pristine with great lies every time. Some holes (e.g., #4) have pretty tight and narrow fairways, so driver isn't usually the best option (for me). The course is not particularly long, so I opted with a club of 220 to 240 off the box, kept me in play with easy approach shots to their beautiful greens. Of the times I found the rough, it still gave me decent lies and didn't require me to adjust for a flyer lie.

GREENS/BUNKERS: Most pristine and beautifully kept greens for a public course this time of year. I didn't see any un-repaired pitch marks (kudos for those fixing their marks). They are fast and roll so true. I highly recommend to practice your putting on the practice green to get a feel of the speed and breaks. Our partner failed to do so and had 6 three-putts and 3 four-putts for the round. These greens are wonderful right now and the course itself is challenging to protect par. All green side bunkers that I found myself in were in great shape, except for the last one on #17 (someone didn't rake the bunker)--but I can't fault the course for this. It's just poor etiquette by fellow golfers playing in front of us.

PACE/OVERALL: Pace was also great! We finished in exactly 4:00 hours. The marshall was very friendly and related how much work they have been putting into their greens. Overall, this course is a 9/10. Go Play!

FAIRWAYS: I have seen these fairways in better shape, but didn't get one bad lie throughout the whole round. Don't expect to see lush green fairways, but they are decent. The rough was approx. 2" high, but the grass is thick and seemed to hold the ball up instead of sink down. So, at times I had very nice lies on the rough (almost teed up for me).

GREENS: They have fully recovered from aeration about 4-6 weeks ago. Most pin locations were set up about 7 yards from the edge of the greens. Pin high sets you up for fast downhill putts, so stay below the hole. I noticed very little pitch marks, so it seems like most guests have been fixing their pitch marks. Greenside bunkers (which I found a few) were all consistent and I had very predictable results.

PACE OF PLAY: Exactly 4:40 according to my GolfLogix on my iPhone. I was very satisfied with this pace, particularly on a Sunday. We were a five-some pushing a three-some, otherwise we would have finished at least 30 minutes earlier---Overall course conditions 8/10.

Played a practice round with OSCA1961 for an upcoming PLGA team play (Match Play) on Friday October 2nd 2009. The course overall is "good" shape! As you walk in from the parking lot, you'll notice that the fairways appear to be dying with brownish dead spots all over. Aesthetically it's not appealing, but your lies on the fairways are beautiful, lush, and react well when compressing the ball. I seemed to have lots of roll on these fairways since I last played here...since I only had about 125 yards to the green on hole #6, a very demanding long par 4 that plays about 450 yds. The greens were the typical municipal type conditions, lots of "unrepaired" pitchmarks by lazy golfers, but the ball was rolling pretty fast on these undulating greens. The rough wasn't too bad, it was almost as short as some of the fairways on some munis out there so you pretty much had a wide open space out there without running into trouble. Overall I'd give Lakewood a 7 on course conditions and a 10 on customer service!

We played there on 08.09.09 for a golf tournament and the reception from the staff was wonderful.....the course was not to my expectations based on a 7+ rating as stated on this website. It appears that the course has flipped nines and you actually start on a par 3 that used to be hole#10. The fairways were in mediocre shape with lots of kikuyu grass growing on it. Very poor and bare lies throughout the course, but not enough to have your ball be in them every single tee shot. The members appear to take care of their divots on the fairways and most were repaired with sand. The greens were super sloooow. I would rate them at a 6 or 7 on the stimpmeter and made it difficult to adjust during my round since some greens were a little slower. The bunkers were in the worst shape I've ever seen a golf course. I didn't fall in them at all during my round, but my playing partners were hitting off of hardpan and in some bunkers it looked like a dry creek (dried hard pan with cracks). The staff was superb and they really made it a spectacular visit, but the course conditions were substandard compared to the price that you have to pay for this course. I would rate this course a 5.0 currently and do not expect to return any time soon. Sorry :)

I had never played this course before and had always seen posts from other GKers so we decided to give it a try this weekend. We had a 10:07 tee time and didn't tee off until 11:10. I can't begin to elaborate on what poor management this course has and they just keep packing golfers (5somes) with no concern about how late they are running on their tee times. Anyhow the course conditions were mediocre with lots of bare spots on the fairways and the bumpiest greens I've putted on in a long time. First and last time that I ever play there.....plus it took us almost 6 hours to play making it a 7 hour day out there with our nice delay. The starters are very nice, but they just can't pack people there, but then again it all comes down to the bottom line these days!

Well, let me start by quoting Father Cheese:
"A six-hour round...that was a bit much. I had to keep asking myself: Was I really playing with all those fellow GK'ers who post here on the Forum about how much they hate slow play??? Six freaking hours. I'm sorry...but golf at that pace is just no fun for me. Add two hours to Beaumont (each way) and then dinner...that's twelve hours I want back!"

I completely agree with him on the six-hour round deal and all those GKers who complain about "slow play" were obviously not there at our event. Some of us in our group really need to learn to take their lesson and "take a drop from a lateral" instead of trying to search for balls, wasting time, and trying to hit their ball from a hazard....to top things off I was sick as a dog and was dying out there watching this display of poor course management.

The course was in great shape, as most have already commented there were a few areas on the fairway that were wet and not properly marked as GUR. The rough was definitely not "PGA Q-school" quality, this is why I came out as sick as I was to challenge myself on a course that was supposed to be tailored for PGA pros-to-be.

What probably killed most GKers at this event were the lightning fast greens, and most of us out there don't practice putting enough, so the strokes just added to a mediocre round. My playing partner must have had at least 6 three-putts.....this course definitely will challenge your putting skills and imagination. I managed to stay away from any three-putts and 30 putts for the round managed to save my score a little. I just felt like crap and was just waiting for my round to end so I could get home and rest.

Overall, this course is highly recommended and you need to go test your skills right after PGA Q-school to appreciate the fast greens and course conditions. The staff was superb as already mentioned by other GK reviewers.

Played a practice round in preparation for the PLGA team play this upcoming weekend. The course is a little dried out, particularly the fairways have that brownish appearance on some areas, but not enough of a deterrent to give you a poor lie. Overall, the course is in decent shape!

Fairways & Tee box: Most tee boxes are a little shaggy and don't appear to be trimmed. The fairways as described above are a little brown, but for the most part will give you a great lie if your in the fairway. The rough was not so penal, but trees do get in the way here....

Greens & Traps: The greens are rolling pretty fast and they have very severe slope and breaks, so you must keep the ball "BELOW" the hole if you want to putt well here and shoot a low score. I found an overwhelming amount of "UNREPAIRED PITCHMARKS", it does have a high volume of people and it is apparent that most don't have any golf etiquette in fixing ballmarks.

Staff & Rate: The starter, I think his name was Anthony was very professional and courteous. We teed off on time and finished our round in 4:15...we probably could have finished earlier, but we had a slow foursome in front that were a hole behind. I politely informed that Marshall on #16, but all he said was, "Yeah, I know they are a hole behind" and he kept driving in the opposite direction (Marshall--some older gentleman with a beard)... I just laughed at that point, but overall a 4:15 round in a county course, you can't complain too much! I would rate the course at a 7.0 given todays' conditions.

Played here on Friday at 9:00 a.m. with other GKers...I had never played there before and it was a nice scenery change for me. The drive back home was a B%#*h. Anyhow, the fees as most of you know have increased and for a non-resident you really get the shaft. Green fees for a non-resident are $35 to walk.

From the pro-shop to the starter...this is a very well organized course. The fairways were in pretty immaculate shape for getting as much play as this course gets. There were a few burned out areas in the fairway, but it's expected with the summer heat. The course play to almost 7,000 from the blue tees and it is a very challenging course.

The greens were beautiful....I hardly found any unrepaired ball marks on them and they were very tough to read. I had several GIRs and just barely missed my mark. I loved the greens in that not many putts were straight in putts! There were many birdie opportunities but you really had to read the break to get them in. I didn't find many sandtraps, but they seemed pretty fluffy and not hard-packed like most muni-courses.

The pace of play was great! We finished in 4:15 hours and never really had to wait on many holes. The marshall did a great job that day to keep the pace going...I would love to come back to this course and try to break something......par that is!

Wow, this course has amazingly gone DOWNHILL!!! Lets start with the tee time issue which may have simply just been an anomaly, but apparently their online tee-time booking "double-booked" alot of tee times. Our scheduled tee time was at 8:00 a.m., due to the double-booking we didn't tee off our until 8:45 a.m.

Fairways were really shaggy and at times it felt like I was in the rough instead of the fairway. THERE IS ALOT OF CONSTRUCTION GOING ON, they are placing new bunkers and so forth....definitely didn't get my "moneys worth" based on course conditions.

The greens were surprisingly in good shape...most courses have alot of Poa Annua growing out of them. Los Serranos has managed to keep the Poa Annua out and the greens are in really great shape with very little if any pitch marks to my eye. They are over-watering them due to the heat I suppose, so you must play all carry because it will not roll to the pin.

I was in a few bunkers, mostly greenside bunkers and they played pretty consistent with lots of sand to go through and make that nice "thumping" sound to get out of the trap.

The starters were pretty nice guys and they handled themselves pretty well for having a few irate golfers due to the double booking issue I mentioned earlier....I don't know, based on todays' course conditions I definitely would not come back and pay $71 (with a cart) to play this course. I was here a few years ago and many Eucalyptus trees have been cut down and lots of new baby staked trees are all over the place. Personally, I probably won't be back until 10 years from now...wait for all the construction and those trees to grow out some. Maybe then, the course will be in great shape!

This course is such a rip-off...we had a tournament here on July 13th 2008. The course charges $50 on the weekend and they charged us $73 dollars for a course that should actually be rated at 4.50 instead of the 7+ rating that is reflected! Way too overated and NOT WORTH YOUR MONEY!

The tee boxes were all unleveled and shaggy with rough growing out of the tee box approximately one inch in length. The fairways were also shaggy and at times it appeared I was in the rough instead of the fairway. If you do find the rough, the grass will grab your club and make you pull, so HIT THE BALL FIRST!

The greens were bermuda greens with Poa Annua growing all over the place...very bumpy and inconsistent. I would never return back to the this course, even if I had a complimentary green fee....horrible conditioned course for the price.
