Grew up on this course, so I can compare and contrast it over last 20 years, which by the way, very little has changed. Have not played this track in over 5 years. There is a reason, usually difficult to get tee times due to local preferred tee time arrangements (that is fine) but more so because of escalating fee over the last few years. At normal rack rate of $70 this track is just not worth it. Had a GolfNow rate of $52 on a Sunday morning so at that rate, worth it.

Also, understand what you are getting. From Sep to November, every other week or so, this track is a parking lot for the Rose Bowl. Course #1 and some holes on Course #2 fairways get trampled a little. So know that during this time of the year, you can expect a little ground under repair and some very thin spots. Well, right now, that is what you get. Most other times of the year, they keep this place in fairly good condition and it would rate as an average pub links track. The layout is extremely challenging with length needed off the tee while being fairly straight. Don't get lulled to sleep by the opening hole being short, that is the last time you get that. Remainder of holes (even the par 3's) are longish. Especially if you bounce back to the blues and you better be a low single digit to jump back to the tips.

Right now course is in OK shape. Fairways are thin, are a lot of bare spots. Greens are in relatively good shape and were receptive to lofted iron shots. As is the case at many public courses with this kind of volume, many people have no idea what a divot repair tool is, so you are going to find a good number of fresh marks. Tee boxes are a little shaggy, uneven and beat up, but nothing out of the ordinary.

All in all, Brookside is in OK shape. Don't expect great things and you will be just fine. As I mentioned, if you don't get a discounted rate, let this one slide as the $70 range for non-residents just isn't worth it. In the $50 range, play it.

Played Sat 6:45 am, got a GolfNow rate of $65. Pace of Play was FANTASTIC. We started our round on time and finished in 3 hr 30 mins and we did have to wait a little on a few holes. Course appears to be doing a great job of keeping folks on pace and setting tee times a little farther apart helps. Course has been switched up with new owners and you now start on the old #10. They tell you this from the beginning and appears to work fine. Getting around a public track in under 4 hours is why some of us get up early and this was very appreciated. Group ahead of us did good job of playing quick. Haven't played this track in several years as I remembered the Pace of Play being ridiculous, so efforts here will get me coming back.

Greens - appeared to actually be really slow. Did not look shaggy, but they were not fast by any means. They were in fairly good shape. They were a little bumpy at times, but not too terrible. I hate commenting about divots on greens because this isn't a course problem, but a GOLFER problem. Honestly, I find 75% of golfers in So Cal DO NOT repair divots so banging a course on this seems like the wrong thing to do. The only way around it is to have Marshalls walking around every few holes fixing the divots for all those inconsiderate ones.... were a number of fresh divots, but nothing crazy.

Fairways -- were in pretty good shape. There were a number of bare spots that were roped off but all in all they were very nice and very playable. Ground was wet in a lot of spots, so given we have been having hot temps can only attest to course overwatering at night early morning to keep it green. For Dawn Patrol, it does make it a little more "moist". I am sure in the later morning this would be a little different. Honestly can't remember too much rough that caused problems at all.

Traps --- first item that was really "off". Traps are not good quality sand and noticeable rocks in many of them. Playing out of them was inconsistent and you never really were sure if you were going to get some softness or a flyer. Could use some improvement.

Tee boxes --- they really are not great at all. Almost all of them are uneven. Not that I would expect perfectly level tee boxes, but it really was difficult to find a spot on the tee boxes as they were set up where you felt it wasn't going to affect ball flight or get comfortable. They also are extremely chewed up with divots throughout. Even on non par three's, the tee boxes were a little ragged. Looking around them, it looks like they were pretty chewed up from front to back, so problem might be new owners are going to have to drop some duckets and redo a bunch of the grass and really work on many of them. These I felt were what dragged the course rating down the most.

All in all, this is a nice little track with a very playable layout and at least today pace has improved. At the $65 rate in the OC, we will definitely play again and will work into our rotation.

Played as part of a 14 Player group. Customer Service is TOP Notch and you get a great country club feel from this property. Coming in, they set your clubs up, give you a nice bag tag, yardage book and 4 waters per cart. Then you proceed to the complimentary grass driving range and bang some balls. On the first tee, there was a marshall there who gave our groups some quick tips on how to approach the course. Note: course design on holes 2-6 causes some backups ---- marshall kept all groups well onto the first tee to minimize this, but still gonna happen.

Course is BEAUTIFUL. Layout is somewhat difficult as if you are not an average hitter off the tee box (meaning to me you can carry at least 150-170 yards) you better push up ahead of the normal "white" tee boxes. Many holes require at least a 150 ish carry off the tee that can frustrate you very quickly if you don't bang it. Now if you are a LONG hitter off the tee (meaning to me your average drive is 260+, you are going to have sections of this course that will frustrate you. There are a number of holes where you will have to lay back off the tee to around the 220 ish neighborhood. For those that like to bang it, this could frustrate you a little bit.

Tee boxes were in very good shape, normal amount of divots on the par 3's for a high end course, but overall were level and you could find a good spot to hit from.

Fairways - were in really good shape considering it was mid June, and actually would have been happy with them anytime of the year. No bare spots to note and there was ample grass to be able to hit your ball well.

Bunkers --- were in pretty good shape and fairly consistent to hit out of.

Greens --- OK, they frustrated me a little bit. We were playing the weekend before the course was scheduled to be closed for aeration for a couple of days. Not sure if this was the reason, or just the time of the year, but I really did not care for how the greens were maintained. It was almost like you were hitting off glass. Not that they were lightning fast as they were not by any means, but the grass was cut so close it was next to impossible to really judge any grain or break (other than slope). Putted balls didn't seem to roll, but merely slide over the top. Felt very uncomfortable standing over putts and this is normally not the case for me. Was really the only detracting part of the course.

Wind --- if the wind is blowing as it was for us on the back 9, course is really difficult to manage. With the desert target style on many holes, the elevation changes and forced carry, playing here in the wind is really not much fun.... Not that playing in the wind is fun anywhere, but really makes the backside of this course more difficult than it needs to be. So get out early before any afternoon winds.

Overall this is a nice track and if you are playing multiple days in the area, I would definitely put it into the rotation. Troon service at its' finest, with great service from Parking Lot to Green and in the clubhouse.

Played with a group of 14 on 6/22. Took off around 10 am and found wonderful conditions to start. Wind became a little factor later in the afternoon as we were finishing. Very tough to play this course if windy with all the elevation changes, so note that.

From the first tee box, you are in awe of the beauty of this golf course. It starts with the first shot and does not stop until the final putt drops. Course is full of elevation changes and choosing the right tee's is paramount to your enjoyment. Leave your EGO in the car. Select the right Tee Box to your current playing handicap, not what you think you are. There is a huge difference from the different Tee Boxes in forced carry and trouble. So do yourself a favor. Also, if you tend to spray the ball around a lot, move up, drop down a few clubs and bring lots of golf balls. While the course is fair, there are a number of holes where less than quality golf shots are going to disappear.

Another note, on many of the holes you have to actually climb stairs to get from the Golf Cart parking to the Tee Box, so if you have bad legs, be prepared. This is not a normal muni where you just cruise up right next to the markers, drop it, bang it and move on.

No GPS in carts, so if you have a GPS product with fly-over capabilities you will be fine. Otherwise, get their yardage book. Not many, but there are a few blind shots where you want to know where to go and driving ahead will only get you part of the way there. You also will have to be fairly adept at making adjustment for downhill and uphill shots.

For June and HOT, course was in phenomenal shape. Tee Boxes were very level and lush, fairways were in great shape and the greens were very nice as well. they were a little on the hard side, but not crazy hard where balls were hitting and flying all over. Despite being hard, they were much slower than you would have thought. Many of the holes have the wonderful white sand that plays very true. Some of the holes the sand was a little crusty and balls tended to jump a little more. Your a golfer, take note of what is under your feet and adjust accordingly. Even the crusty one's were in great shape. Although, I will note, there are a number of very large bunkers and while they had some very high quality rakes, there was nowhere near enough for many of the bunkers that were oversized. We did spend a good deal of time walking around to grab a rake.

A very nice touch that you come through the on course Snack Shack 2x during your round. You hit it after the 5th hole and then again after the 14th I believe. You also go by the clubhouse at the turn, so ample time to gear up with what you need. Important, as they do not have convenience carts roaming the golf course.

Overall I would definitely call this a MUST Play on the West Coast. The staff here was phenomenal. Pace of play is what you should expect from a course of this difficulty level with the elevation changes, some blind shots, and trouble on either side of fairways. You will find it hard to run around this track in 3 hours unless your entire group is single digit handicappers and hitting it well with no one in front of you. Expect a little wait from time to time. Enjoy the beauty. I think also even if you are a higher handicapper, you can find the right tee's to bang it around this track and enjoy yourself. If you tend to hack it around your local muni in the 120 plus range, this probably isn't the track for your game right now unless your going to scramble with your buddies.....

Played sun 8/5/12 - course is in very good shape EXCEPT Greens. Most of the greens were somewhat bumpy and course should hand out divot tools and give instruction on the 1st tee. Were many fresh, to semi fresh divots on the greens. Greens are not in great condition at all and do not match up with overall condition of course.

Love this layout and play here few times a year. Always an enjoyable round and pace of play was very good. They do need to do some work on the greens as they do have a good amount of bumpy spots and whoever has played this course over the last several days in general do not know how or care to repair ball marks on the greens.

All in All, will keep in my rotation, very nice track.

Heard about this track for a while, finally saw t time on golfnow.com and snatched it up. First off, recent history of course (lore) is kinda sketchy. Heard it has had its' ups and downs, but let me tell you, right now course is in great shape, is a very very nice layout and fun to play. My concern is on a Sunday morning it was not crowded and hope it sticks around.

Great location, way out in Temecula, but let me tell you well worth the drive. Meanders through the rolling hills up above Temecula. Great location.

Generally speaking is a very nice layout. There are a couple of holes that they seemed to slam in there requiring a Teeshot of approx 165-170 yards leaving another 170 yards to the pin.... not the best, but only a couple of holes. Requires you to be pretty darn accurate off the Tee, but length is not overly necessary.

Greens are way way firm. Was very difficult to stop balls on these things. Must play your shots short of the pin and let it run back, way back. Unfortunatly, many people need a lesson on repairing ball marks on the greens, as there were a number. Greens are pretty difficult and undulating, so you better be able to put a little bit.

Pace of play was pretty good, but we were 2nd off at 6 am on a sunday. Finished in 4 hours.

Overall is a great little hidden gem if they get enough play to keep it in good shape. Heard this is part of the history of this track. Sunday morning the course was definitely not overrun with golfers. Got a $48 deal on golfnow. At this price, I'd play it all day long even with the price of gas to get down there.

Played 3 times in last 45 days. Course is in good shape considering that it is a very busy public track. Overall fairways are currently pretty consistent, few holes on the backside dormant grass is a little thin. Greens hold shots well, although wish fellow players would learn how to repair divot marks. Pace of play even during the week approaches 4.5 to 5 hours primarily due to slower golfers who generally walk the course.

Played here Monday after not playing here for probably over 10 years.

Course was in very good shape. Played on Monday (GREAT deal (at) $55) and pace of play was pretty darn good at 4 hours. Fairways, Greens and Tee boxes were in very nice shape. Rough was not quite as long as it used to be back in the day, but if you hit a wayward ball, still very tough to find in many places.

Curiously the course was a little "soft / soggy" in a number of places and we have not had significant rain.

Advice - this course is VERY TOUGH. Fairways are VERY tight, did not hit a driver ALL DAY long. Greens are EXTREMELY undulated with severe sloping. You have got to pay attention to pin placement and stay below the hole to have ANY chance of scoring. Unless you are a phenomenal putter. BASIC Advice --- be realistic of your abilities. This is NOT a course you will be able to thrash it around at. If you are not that straight off the tee.... think about somewhere else, especially if you are paying rack rates. You also need to choose the appropriate tee boxes. The course is not extremely long by any means from the white tee's. Step back to the Blue and it adds enough to give you fits unless you pound it and straight. Getting off the tee is only about 1/3 of the battle here. Narrow tree lined fairways make you keep it straight all the way to the green and the greens are very tough. Almost all have multiple tiers, with significant drop offs between them. So if you don't hit it straight, and you have trouble with the flat stick, work on your game first elsewhere. Or else bring a full arsenal of balls (cheap ones) as they will dissappear quickly.

If you can play, these courses are some of the best challenges to your golf game in Southern California.

Used to be a member here, got away from it as most of my rounds are on weekends and this place is so incredibly slow with a 5 hour round a good round, even first thing in the morning. So I haven't played in over a year.

Course is in great shape. Greens were pretty solid, bumpy in some spots but this is a heavy traffic track to be sure. Overall, the tee boxes were in very good shape, the fairways were nice and full, they seem to have let the rough grow compared to when I played before and the tee boxes are fine. Overall definitely worth playing again, but I did play on a Friday, early in the morning teed off at 6:15 am and we were done in 3 1/2 hours. Definitely worth it on a weekday, not sure what weekends are like anymore. Know they still throw out 5 some's any chance they get, so just be prepared.

Played Sun 3/14. Beautiful conditions. There was a frost delay so we got started about 1/2 hour late. Starter ran us off at hole #2 we were the first group out (was OK, they were doing what they could to get everyone going as quickly as possible) said at end they would work us in to finish hole #1. By the time we got around, there were 4 groups on the hole. They offered to let us play #1 on Champions course, we didn't though. They did their best to make it work. We played in 4 1/2 hours. We normally would play in just over 3 hours, as we had no one to wait on, it was all us. Problem had a lot to do with the length of rough just off the fairway. There were many many times where 1 or more of us in the group had a difficult time finding our ball. This is NOT normal for us, all the length of rough. This I feel slows play and the grass in these area's seemed to swallow balls and hide them. I will add a little time maybe 1/2 hour to the fact that none of us had played this track before, we were probably a little slower than normal trying to understand the course and decide where to play our shots. Group behind us was a 3 some and was near us, but not waiting on very few shots (par 3's) so we kept this slower than normal pace. I would estimate a normal round with the layout and rough is going to be 5 hours at least on a weekend.

Now to the course. I have been jonesing to play this course for a couple of years, but not willing to drive that far or pay a normal weekend rate around $90. Got a discounted green fee of $65 on one of the sites so decided now was the time.

Layout is fantastic. The elevation changes, doglegs and contour of this track is phenomenal. You will play many shots in your bag if you hope to score. It is a little tricky the first time around, I think you really need to play it a couple of times to really know where to hit the ball. Rough as I mentioned seemed to swallow golf balls that were within a couple feet of the plush fairway. Not severely mi sh$t , but just trickling into the rough and it became an advanture to find. Many of the greens "looked" a little hairy with mixture of grasses, but overall they rolled very true and turned out to be very nice putting surfaces for the most part. Greens are a little tough in reading and getting the right lines. Putter error (me and my group) not the course. You will have a little challenge in getting the right reads. Good challenge though. Greens all have undulations that you will have to navigate and you definitely want to pay attention to pin position and play to the according location. Missing in the wrong spot will be very penal on almost all holes. Overall, I guess I would not recommend this course for a high handicapper. Not a lot of margin for error on many holes, some yes, but most no. You'll lose a number of sleeves of balls that way. Low handicappers will be adequately challenged. We played from the Blacks (they have Golds that are back all the way) and at 6800 was fine for our group (3 single digit handicappers & 1 mid teens). Fairways were in good shape as were the tee boxes (I attribute to the fact that we were back on the blacks where most folks would not go). Staff at the course was fantastic, did not see a Refreshment Cart on the course the entire day. Thought this was strange, don't even know if they have one. Half way house was open and food items were pretty good.

ISSUES WITH COURSE --- I would consider this an upscale course for So Cal. Given, it is home of So Cal PGA, but no GPS in the carts was unusual. Now, I carry my own, but just thought for an upscale course missing this was strange. Bunkers ---- COURSE SHOULD BE EMBERRASED, REALLY !!! The bunkers are just holes filled with DIRT and Rocks. Yes, there were large rocks in there. They have also covered over old Fairway Bunkers (which I am sure made the course play far more difficult) with Grass... HOWEVER, don't know how long ago they did it, but most of those should be ground under repair. The grass in those spots is rock hard and patchy. Our irons were litterally BOUNCING with no divots. This seemed really rediculous and when we ended up there, it was not pretty. Whomever did this work should provide a refund. It really is a terrible job of putting in grass.

Overall, I really did enjoy the course. For those of us in LA Country, it is a very long way out there. I had always heard it was worth the drive. I "kind of" think it is. But at a standard green fee around $90, with HORRIBLE bunkers (mind you, it appeared to be every single one, not just a couple) it will aggrevate you a great deal. But the general layout and conditions of tee boxes, fairways and greens was very nice. I definitely would not want to play this course in the wind. Slight breeze we had was tough enough.

Played here for the 2nd time, now time for review. First off, played Sun 2/21 after it had rained the night before and a couple of weeks now of rain in the area off and on. Did I say it rained? Had NO IDEA from the condition of the course. This place is not built on an old Rock Quarry but rather a sponge... was in amazing shape and we had no clue that it has rained in weeks out here. Course was in great shape and it had rained over night.

Greens were obviously slower than normal, but were in great shape. As they normally are, greens were firm as was the area leading up to them. Had a few shots hit on front of green and expected to plug with short irons / wedges but nope, jumped up to middle / back of greens (really???) I was amazed.

This course has an INCREDIBLE LAYOUT. Quickly becoming one of my favorite tracks in So Cal. Fairways / Tee Boxes were in great shape. Staff is EXTREMELY CORDIAL AND HELPFUL. Teed off Sunday morning at 7:05 am played in 3 hours. Saw the cart girl 3 times during the round (normally lucky to see at all when we are part of dawn patrol).

Overall great course. ONLY CAVEAT ---- price ! I really am not a fan at the rack rate of $95 . Really won't play it at that rate. But got a $75 rate on Golf Now ----- all day long. So my advice, play during the week if you can, if not, check Golf Now.com and when the rate is in the $70's ALL DAY LONG !!!!
