Hello all,
We wanted to play a new course that we have never played before, so we drove a bit far from the San Fernando Valley to Costa Mesa and tried Costa Mesa CC Los Lagos for $40 on Sunday at 1pm.

We arrived and we met with a starter with little personality, and seemed to want to brush us aside stating to let us know when everyone has arrived (we were standing right in front of him), maybe he thought we were a foursome instead of a two some. Anyway, he seemed very mechanical and lacked any personality.

We started about 20 minutes late as the course was running behind.

The tee boxes were in great shape, but for some reason, the tee boxes were usually the entire width of the tee box. Kind of an odd approach I thought, but I took advantage of them on occasion teeing from one side or the other depending on how the hole fit my eye and hole obstacles. Tee boxes were flat, but the Kikuyu grass was too long for the tee boxes. This is bad as your feet settle in too low. I got under a hybrid too much and next time I would play some shots without a tee.

Fairways were nice and green, the grass length just a hair too long but OK. No patches or problems to mention.

Greens were surprisingly nice, rolling maybe 9 on the stimp but consistent throughout which is a plus. The greens were also soft as well.

Bunkers were pretty decent, a few needed attention as the hackers/lazy people don't rake them.

The layout is pretty straight forward, just a couple holes where some basic course knowledge would have helped.

Nice facilities on this 36 hole site. They have a full bar and snack bar.

Overall a good experience, the course is not too challenging but fun for anyone. I thought it was a good value at $40 for Sunday twilight.

Hello there golfers,
Today I played Hansen Dam G.C. in Sylmar, CA. This is a city course, and I usually don't play city courses too much, I seem to recall a rate increase to city courses recently, and they have more complicated rate schedules with some folks being residents and non-residents.

So we got an online time for $42 with a cart at 9:24am Monday morning. Really not a good price, but a friend suggested we play here. So upon arrival, the course was fairly empty (maybe because of the heat, it was high 90's).

The first thing we noticed was lots of watering especially on the greens. I would guess that the maintenance crew was trying to keep the greens from burning up, because they were all soaked. The grass was cut in the morning, so the grass was even, but they grass was also long and wet. This made them very very slow. Maybe this is needed to keep them healthy while so hot. But for us, it was a poor putting experience. No sign of ball marks though.

The fairways were pretty good, about what you would expect from a muni course. Minor issues here and there, but no real issues.

Bunkers were just OK, the sand was compacted a bit. Also rakes were scare, at least the beaches that I managed to find.

The rough was fine, but be advised of the kikuya grass, it props the ball up while your feet tough the ground. This caught me off guard several times and ruined a few shots for me. Hitting the grass first will cause it to grab the club and hit a weak shot at best.

No other issues, not sure I would return except for an occasional how do you do round.

Hi All,
I just played Sterling Hills GC twilight time from Golf Now for $34.

Getting started was a bit slow as they were finishing a Men's club tournament. Once we got going the pace was moderate, but not as slow as we were warned, I would call the pace 'normal' for a weekend. The first thing we noticed was the very long grass in the tee boxes. This always wreaks havoc for me as your feet settle in lower, and when you tee the ball up above the grass it is relatively higher than normal. I'm not sure why they were so long, but it was a hindrance all day, every single tee box was poor. Also, some of the tee boxes are getting bumpy and not level. While most all areas of this course are fine, they could do with some investment into the tee boxes.

No complaints about the fairway or rough, they were in fine shape. My playing partner thought the bunkers were packed too hard, but I thought that they were 'normal'. Maybe a bit more bunker work to keep the sand from compacting.

The greens were pretty good, consistent and rolling OK. Hard to find much damage on the greens, so that is always a huge plus. Service at the course was OK, and the facilities are really nice. I got a beverage at the turn, they have refillable drinks so that's always something I like.

A really good value for $34 today.

Hello there golfers,
I played Upland Hills CC with a junior student of mine who I started teaching at age 7 and he is now a big lad at 17. We got an online rate of $23 for Sunday golf at 1:15pm with a cart. I have played the course many times and this is a bargain for a fun smaller course.

The course was quite empty, we went off as a two-some, picked up a single along the way, he left, then we picked up a different single once we finally ran into a four-some after about 8 holes.

Management appeared to be letting the grass grow quite long all over the place. The tee boxes were cut OK, but the rough length was very very long and the greens were very very slow and soft. Not necessarily bumpy, but they were long like they were recovering from aeration. This made the uphill putts more challenging, and I would advise to practice distance putting on this course to get the right feel.

Overall condition was fine, a great value for $23 plus the booking fee. The bunkers were not raked, so the sand had settled down, which always makes bunkers firm and I needed to be careful about bouncing off of the hard packed sand and blade one across the green. I watched my junior do that on one hole, but thankfully I was able to adapt.

Pace of play was normal, we did get behind 4 ladies, but it was about what you would expect in terms of pace of play. I think we finished in under 4 hours. There was a marshall out on the course and a girl selling drinks, so I thought that was great for this small course to help the players on the course.

They have a free refills soda bar if you get the large size, so I always recommend those haha.

Good value and a fun round. I would like to see the greens faster and the rough cut shorter once they have recovered from aeration.

Cheers - JJ

Hi all,
On Monday I played Rustic Canyon GC with 3 friends. The cart rate is $58 on weekdays, a bit high, but I really like this course so I think it is worth it.

Staff are friendly and they have a cart attendant that will get you setup with your ride. This is a links style course surrounded by desert like areas of dirt and light brush.

All the tee boxes were in great shape. Most all of the holes have decent sized landing areas unlike some courses with desert surrounding are quite narrow, plenty of grass here.

The course was fairly empty, so we zoomed around quickly in just over 4 hours. The greens here were in great shape, quick but not so fast the ball rolls off the green. The green are quite large and undulating, so hopefully your first putt is not too far away. The greens share the exact same type of grass as the collar of the green, so they can effectively alter the shape of the green from week to week. Sometimes it is hard to see if your ball is even on the green or in the collar or fairway area. Look for the little white painted dots on the collar to see the outline of the green.

Nice views in the canyon wash area where the course is built always one of my local favorite courses. Get a large drink a the turn for a free refill.

Hi all,
I played Los Amigos GC last Sunday 12:52 tee time. We booked online and paid $38 with the booking fee including a cart. We arrived on time, but the course had ran out of carts. This is usually due to poor management, having lots of carts in need of repair or abnormally high cart use by customers. Whatever it was, it made us wait an extra 25 minutes to get a cart. We were not offered any discount or anything. We were told we could go on the course without a cart and they would bring us one. No thanks.

So we get going and a single joins us. The course is really flat but it was in decent shape. No issues with tee box quality, or fairways. The greens were healthy but a bit slow, seemed they might be getting ready for aeration.

The course played very slow as there were people waiting on each hole, sometimes two groups. Normally this will clear after a few holes, but this was all day long. There were small groups and large groups (5 someones) so I think matching people up to make all 4 somes and 5 somes might have helped, but I would guess overall the course just plays slow when it is busy.

Not the best experience, but its an easy course to play or walk and seems to be in good shape.

Hi All,
I am back from business travel and played my first round back at Sterling Hills G.C. I have always liked this course since it opened, a fun, challenging layout in my opinion. Some courses I like I will stay away to save money, but Sunday we got an online tee time at 11:18am for $39 each plus online fee. I booked for two, and a couple of friends wanted to come along as well. The course was nice enough to extend the online rate to them which was nice.

The pro shop guy was all business but nice enough. Checked in with the starter who was trying to keep my receipt, I never understand that why a course gives you a receipt and then trys to take it away. So after a short discussion, the started surrendered my golf receipt back to me.

Tee boxes here are usually pretty good. We played the tips and only encountered a couple of tee boxes where the grass was a bit long. Other than that, they were fine. The fairways were just right in length, well maintained. A couple spots of over watering made low points a bit wet. My friend was complaining about this, but not so much of an issue for me. The bunkers were well maintained, and did not have the 'hard-pack' sand 1 inch below the surface like so many 'poorly maintained' course have.

The greens were in very good shape. Soft and rolling pretty smooth. Just a touch slow for me at maybe a 9.5 on the stimp. A little faster and I would be really happy. Not much damage as the greens are looking good.

Pace of play was a bit slow, about 5 hours 10 minutes. I think this can be expected for play on a Sunday.

Good facilities and practice area, one of my top twenty courses and for $39 on a Sunday its a bargain.

Hi all,
I played Trilogy at Glen Ivy yesterday on President's Day Monday. This is one of my favorite layouts. It has lots of hills, but proper landing areas and not too many uneven lies to hit off of. Just a bit of billy goat walking up and down hills but not to much to be a chore.
The course was in decent shape, but slightly below what I am used to at this course. The tee boxes were a bit overgrown too long, which can catch you off guard through impact if you are not careful.
The fairways were fine, a bit thin in some areas, but nothing extreme. A few places seemed to be over watered as well.
Greens were a bit below par compared to normal conditions here, they were a bit bumpy which would throw your ball off line when putting.
The bunkers were OK, but like many courses, the sand compacts over time and you get a top layer that is soft and some immediate hard packed sand underneath. Yup, I sent a ball flying over the green as my SW bounced off the hard pack.
The service was OK, but the snack bar attendant was slow to serve me when I walked in and didn't speak to me or thank me for buying some items. Not rude, but not the best customer service.

This might be my lowest rating of this course, but still the layout is awesome, love the views and vistas, I would come back again and again!
Thanks,
JJ

Played Olivas Links on Sunday with HickorySwinger.
Olivas Links is rapidly becoming one of my favorite courses. We always get a great deal booking online, Sunday we got 12:30pm for $28 with a cart. Really a bargain for this course. The weather is very consistent as it is very close to the ocean. During the summer, the temperature is usually at least 10 degrees cooler than the valleys which makes a great escape from the heat. Almost always an ocean breeze here as well. A links style course, relatively flat with slight undulations in the fairways.
Tee boxes are usually pretty good with a few imperfections.
Fairways are about the same, decent but not perfect.
Greens are consistent and decent with just a few bumps. Usually rolling about 9.5 my guess.
Bunkers were in great shape, I was in too many of them for sure!
I played with HickorySwinger and he got a hole in one on the 185 yard par 3 8th hole, so congrats, but still waiting for my drink!! haha

Hi all,
I played Tierra Rejada with some friends, first time in quite a long time (8 years??) I seemed to remember that it was a tough, shotmakers course, that is narrow in spots. My opinion changed a bit for whatever reason.
The first thing that I noticed was that the location was a perfect setting for a golf course, with surrounding rolling hills and lots of shades of green that you don't always see with LA courses. The pro shop and snack bar / bar was modern looking and in great shape.

I might normally go through each area of the course (tee boxes, fairways, greens, bunkers etc) but in reality, everything was really in great shape, I rated everything 8 out of 10 or better. It was really hard to find a weakness at Tierra Rejada, just a great course.
It was a bit challenging, but we played from the middle tees, so maybe the last time I played was from the tips. They have 'family' tees also, so you can choose the level of difficulty.
Just a little bit hilly for my tastes, but I'm a big guy, so I don't like walking up and down hills too much!! I would recommend this course to anyone, I think that the weekday price point of about $75 is about right for this course.
Regards,
JJ

FULL DISCLOSURE - I have worked at this course since 1998, working currently as a independent contractor Golf Instructor. I will do a slightly longer review of this course.

Yes, I have worked here since 1998 as an Ambassador, Starter and now an instructor.
Over the years the course has seen some changes, most recently a few greens and tee boxes were leveled. Quite a lot of money was put into the course to make these improvements. I would say the course is the best condition I have ever seen. The current manager/superintendent have been doing a great job of keeping the course up.

Tee Times - call or use Golfzing.com. Usually plenty of tee times available, Scholl Canyon gets a fair amount of 'walk-ups'. Plenty of parking, as it is extremely rare that the lot gets full even with multiple tournaments going on. There are also 10 tennis courts for rent, some have recently been resurfaced.

Pro Shop/Snack Bar - has everything that you would need, but not golf clubs. Good deals on shoes at 50% off clearing out models from last year. Prices are just average beyond sale prices. Snack bar with grill can make basic sandwiches, hot dogs etc. A couple TV's to watch golf or sports.

Tee boxes - several were recently leveled. This is one of my pet peeves, I hate tee boxes that are uneven. Scholl had this issue for many years as it is built on a landfill and the ground has been sliding around for many years. It seems to have stopped for the most part in most areas. Overall the tee boxes are in good condition.

Fairways - they are pretty normal for the LA area, sometimes they brown up when it gets hot. Some people don't under stand that is can be hard to keep water in areas that are hilly depending on the type of grass. The water is also very expensive, so course that might not be making a lot of money might cut water rather quickly. But Scholl is usually pretty good except during the summer for a couple months.

Greens - again, several were recently leveled as they were getting too steep in several spots. The speed and quality of these greens is quite good on average. Saturday morning they are usually running 10+

There is a driving range where they hit off of grass MOST every Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday. Mats on the other days. Call the course to ensure that the grass range is open. The practice bunker was recently removed as a management decision, so there is no longer a practice bunker on the range. There is a putting green that is near the first hole, usually representative of the speed of the greens.

Scholl is in the hills and there are some really nice views up there. On a normal day, you can see the ocean near Santa Monica. On clearer days, you can see the water/ships/cranes in San Pedro Long Beach area. Maybe twice in my life I have seen a 'water line' of the ocean near Malibu, but that is a long ways away and extremely rare to see that far. Go up there after the wind blows all of the smog away and you will see some nice views.

The course is a par 60 executive course, no par 5's. It does have 6 par 4's and the rest are 3's. If the course isn't slow, a two-some can play in under two hours sometimes. Almost always rounds are less than 4 hours as the course is shorter.

A good course for everyone, the front nine is pretty easy and the back nine is more challenging running through the hills and is quite narrow in some spots.

There is a Men's club you can join, call the course for more information.

Well that is about all I can think of - thanks!

Hey everyone,
Played Mountain Meadows in Pomona near Fairplex on Sunday. This is a course I have played a lot in the past and it had been awhile so we went back. Got a time at noon for $40 so finishing before sunset was questionable since its winter. The course was really good shape, teeboxes and fairways were very green. The greens were rolling fine and no major issues with them. The pace of play is notoriously slow here, in my opinion for two reasons 1) course design 2) tee time spacing. There were marshals on the course, but there was nothing for them to do since each group was backup to each other. We finished in the the dark but did not lose a ball (very lucky since we had to guess where our tee shots went). Course appears to have a grass range, not sure if it is in use all the time. Also has a snack bar/restaurant and a full bar also. I like the course layout, but not a fan of the pace of play.
