Enjoyed a Thursday morning round with fellow GK Gurus grantar2 and sbarajas, teeing off at 7:30 a.m. Pace of play was fine... some brief waiting on our first nine holes (the Presidio course) and then no waiting at all on the second nine (Mission). Finished in 4:15.

Riverwalk's nice driving range and practice green made for an easy and enjoyable pre-round warm-up. Staff was efficient and friendly. John the starter was warm and welcoming as always.

Didn't realize until after driving off to the first tee that GPS was not working on my cart. Turned out to be my only complaint.

As usual, the greens were the course's brightest highlight: speedy and very true. Later that day I played another course and left almost every putt short because Riverwalk's greens were so much faster (at least that's what I told myself).

Tee boxes were in good shape. A few patches of ground-under-repair on some fairways, but not egregious. Beverage cart came around once.

One new feature involved the shrubs/trees in the San Diego River, which have gotten tall in some places (maybe due to all that rain a few months back?). Their height has created some new blind shots over the River on three holes, adding some difficulty. They looked like they could get even taller, and JohnnyGK mentioned the river foliage is off-limits to Riverwalk's grounds crew, so this could be the new normal.

This well-manicured par-56 in Solana Beach is like a good Pixar movie - simple enough for the beginners to enjoy, with sufficient nuance to also entertain any grizzled old vets along for the ride.

The course is nestled in some hills, so most tee shots are either uphill or downhill, often significantly so. Most holes are in the 90 to 140 yard range, with two longer par-3s and two 250-ish par-4s. The length and features of the par-4s make club selection interesting. Most holes have a greenside bunker or two.

Teed off on Saturday at 11am with my wife. The course was decently crowded, mostly with twosomes. At several tee boxes, we waited for a couple minutes, but nothing egregious. The pace felt fine and came in at about 2 1/4 hours for the 18 holes.

Only complaint was the dry and heavily divoted nature of the teeing areas. Otherwise, the course looked and played great. Green complexes, and greens and the two fairways all seemed well watered. Greens were memory-foam-soft and rolled slow but true. Bunkers ranged from good to OK.

Played the Mission and then Presidio tracks at this 27-hole course with three fellow GKers I hadn't played with before - nice guys all.

We teed off on a Sunday at 7:22am, my earliest tee time in years. I live nearby and I'm a "green member" at Riverwalk, paying $50 a month for discounted tee times and free daily range balls.

I managed to get there early enough to hit just a few off the grass at the range before our group was called. I like the putting green at Riverwalk, and the range is my favorite in San Diego - nicely designed and spacious with some inviting targets, and especially fun when the grass is open, which seems to be mainly Saturday and Sunday mornings.

On the course, it was pretty damp out there for the first hour-plus on Mission -- seemed like heavy dew plus maybe overnight watering. Someone asked, only half joking, if it had rained the night before. I was toweling my club off after each shot, and occasionally my shoes.

Otherwise, playing conditions were fine by me... tee boxes ideal, a few bare spots here and there but mostly nice grass coverage, and greens pretty consistently medium-speed. The rough was neither long nor penal. I found myself in bunkers maybe four times (ugh) and sand was fine in all but one (front-right green-side on Presidio hole #2).

Regarding pace of play, we waited a couple minutes on a few holes, but never long enough to be a bother. At the halfway point, one of the ambassadors encouraged the group in front of us to play faster, so they did, which was nice. As usual I was happy with Riverwalk's staff, which got me out there quickly and smoothly for an enjoyable Sunday morning round.

First time at Baker - played South with my wife on gift certificate. Front 9 by ourselves, back 9 with a pair of friendly retired-military gentlemen. Pace of play never felt like an issue. We waited for a couple minutes on a handful of holes.

Staff was fast and friendly, including cart lady we saw once each 9. There was some minor construction going on at the driving range, so access was awkward in some spots though the range was fully operational.

Course was well-kept and enjoyable. Mostly green though some dryer patches and a few dry spots here and there.

Greens rolled consistently medium/medium-fast and decently true, though I thought I maybe had a putt thrown by a bump once.

Generally wide-open layout, forgiving for the most part, though some holes have some dangerous OB that will make errant shots disappear. Overall I thought Admiral Baker South came through ideally for a Saturday afternoon round with my wife. She is a newer golfer and can be intimidated by full-size courses but that was not a problem here.

I might go elsewhere with a group of experienced golfers... for me, the course was challenging and enjoyable, but got a little dull at times due to limited variation in the layout and surroundings that are pleasant enough but don't compare with some other San Diego options.

I showed up at 6pm on a Sunday just hoping to practice putting and chipping - I love the practice green here, with its ample space, variety of undulations and nice location near the clubhouse/restaurant and with views of San Diego Bay. But it turned out the course was wide open, so I decided to walk it single, and ended up getting in 15 holes in a bit less than 2 hours. Probably not that empty too often at Coronado, but I guess sometimes you get lucky!

Overall, very nice conditions. Grass was lush and green everywhere my ball landed, including when I missed a couple greens by maybe 20 yards, and I don't remember seeing any dry patches elsewhere, either. Tee boxes were in fine shape... the par-3 11th's was a little hard, but I only noticed that because the others were ideal. I managed to avoid bunkers and didn't think to peek at any in my haste, so no comment there.

Greens rolled nice... a couple had small, somewhat bumpy sections where a second type of grass seems to be trying to invade, but these patches were far from cup and didn't cause trouble. Many greens are elevated, adding some challenge if you miss your approach, and some are pretty large.

Coronado plays 6,590 yards from the blue tees; par 72. The layout is not difficult - it's flat and there's virtually nowhere you can go out of bounds or get wet, except if you miss big to the right on a few holes. Most holes play straight, and only forced-carry is the pond on par-3 9th. For me, the course is most fun on the back 9... I always enjoy the dogleg-left par-4 13th, the curved par-5 14th and the last 3 or 4 holes with gorgeous views of San Diego Bay to the right.

My only nit to pick (very minor) was that they weren't giving carts out anymore at the time I arrived... I could have got in all 18 if I'd had a cart! But they probably have a good reason for that policy, and honestly I wasn't upset as 15 in 2 hours was way more than I expected.

Greens fees are a steal at any time - weekday $35 and $20 twilight; weekend $40 and $22 twilight; carts per person $18 regular and $11 twilight.

Played Saturday 10:30am with my wife. Course was full but not crowded, with little to no waiting on most tees. Seemed like mostly twosomes. We finished in 2:45 or 3 hours.

Grass was nicely lush across most of the course, perhaps thanks to the massive rains that had hit San Diego about a month earlier.

Only one set of markers was available on each hole, though scorecard indicates two. Generally the set up was to the front, so course played a bit shorter than it could have.

A few of the tee boxes were pretty chewed up with divots, and one or two were a bit soggy -- but tee areas overall were fine. Precise distance to the green was unclear at most tee boxes, and I had forgotten to bring my GPS-distance device so had to do a lot of guesstimating.

Greens played easy and were in decent shape; we didn't have any complaints through 18 holes.

It was sunny and unusually warm for February, with the temps pushing 80. I was surprised to find myself seeking shade to rest in on a few of the later holes. I love playing in dry heat, and all three Sycuan courses are a good bet for that.

Cost for the two of us walking totaled $26 via GolfNow special deal. That price was amazing considering the enjoyment we got out of the round. I definitely recommend Pine Glen for par 3... fun holes, nice layout, well maintained... good spot for dates and beginners.
