I live locally and consider this "my muni" so this review will reflect my frequent play at this course. First off, don't pay any attention to the length on the score card. Just because this golf course isn't 7k yards from the tips doesn't mean it can't hold it's own against the longer hitter. This is especially true for those who judge a course by the first few holes. At LRG, you can be fooled into thinking that you will post a low number if you take the first 3 holes at face value. The real challenge is found once you reach the treacherous green complexes. Beginning at #4, an uphill short par 4, you will be hard pressed to walk away with a 2 putt par unless your approach is below and close to wherever the pin is tucked that day. The same can be said for #5 & #6, another short par 4 and a med-length par 3 respectively. The fairways are typical muni in that you will rarely find a lush spot but more likely need to play the ball agressively to mitigate the effect of a bare lie or sand-filled divot.
In general, the front nine plays easier than the back and the front is less hilly and closer to Hwy101. Conditions of the course have been as good as I've seen in 12 years (they just aerated the greens at the end of March, however) and the new facilities they built several years ago make the 19th hole as nice as we have at any public course in Canejo Valley. Play can be slow at times but they've kept prices relatively low (not much more than Westlake whose conditions have deteriorated so badly in the last few years that I refuse to play there any longer).
Respect the greens and you can score well. Failure to heed this warning can result in a 4-putt or two!

Played on 7/20. Course is in good shape with the punched greens recovering nicely (although they are slower than normal still). Westlake will never be known for manicured fairways but they are in good shape for a heavily played muni. Tee boxes are being worked on individually but are still crowned and hard to find a level spot on 16. Great staff and a fun course to play.

Played on Sunday, 3/25. Dewsweeper so we played fast with no wait at all! I had not been back here in 3 or 4 years and found the course to be in much better condition than I remember. Typical muni fairways (bare spots, unrepaired divots) and tee boxes (unlevel in places). But, the condition of the greens (especially on the front 9) were fantastic! They ran a little slow for my taste but they were healthy and the players are repairing their ball marks for the most part, anyway! I would go back just for those greens even though the $55 weekend rate is a little steep for a muni. Compared to the horrible greens at Black Gold in Yorba Linda, these greens are competition ready and fun to aim at!

Played 3/27. Tee boxes and fairways are in excellent condition for this time of year. The layout is challenging but fair. While not severe, the elevation changes from tee to green require some consideration. The wind was strong yesterday and we had to duck out from a "microburst" cloud that hit us real hard with lightening, hail and rain!
Now, for the real problem! The greens, if that's what you wish to call them are the worst I have ever seen at a club of this caliber! This has nothing to do with the punching 2 weeks prior! I can tell the difference between good conditions and bad conditions even after regular requireed maintenance. The greens should be completely reseeded. I will not play here again until or unless they improve the greens.

Come on! This is So. CA. with thousands of golfers, little rain and year round play! What do you expect from a muni here? WGC is as good as any in the area and better than most! If you want lush, green fairways, perfect lies and smooth greens at your local muni, you would like Michigan...except you can only play half the year!

2/16 UPDATE: I just wanted to post a quick note about the tournament director at Westlake, Chris Graham. My convinced my buddies from O.C. to finally come out my way for a change. I called several courses to find out if I could get 12 players out on 3/4 and, if so, what would they do for us? Los Robles requires 15 or more, no flexibility. Forget Crystal Springs (conditions horrible). Instead, my little muni Westlake and Mr. Graham were quick to respond and agree to host our little event, on a SUNDAY morning, mind you! Chris not only promised to set us up with everything we would need to make it a fun event, but also suggested I move the requested start time back 30 min. to save 5$ per player! Class act! I know that the course is an "extended exec" course with slow greens and slow play on weekends. But, my pals and I spend 5 hours at Dad Miller all the time. I know we will have a ton of fun in two weeks and I am looking forward to it. By the way, played yesterday and the fairways are starting to respond to the rain and warmth by showing some spring growth through the dormant grass of winter. Greens may be a bit slow but they are in as good of shape as any in the area. Especially for a heavily played muni track. I'm glad this one is just down Lindero Canyon for me!

I play here 2-3 times a week so I think I am qualified to speak to the current conditions. GREAT!...for an "accessible" muni! The greens are in as good a shape as they have been for a long time (unlike Los Robles!). The fairways are a mix of wide open and tight, good for your game to have variety. While it is a par 67, Ted Robinson (who designed North Ranch, Calabassas, and other local tracks) laid out a track that feels like a full length course. Unless you are a scratch player or low handicapper, use your noodle on several of the short par 4's. They are trick holes with plenty of pain if you attempt to drive the green (5th hole has a tight fairway with water in play for the horribly sliced drive and Agoura Rd. for the slightly hooked shot; 8th has OB left and a tight, tree-lined fairway. Both holes have well bunkered greens). Several par 3's require all carry to reach the greens (longest is 180yds.). The customer service is great here which simply adds to the enjoyment. Range is right next to the clubhouse and putting green. Fun place to work on your game. Under $30 to walk around here? Priceless!
