A new management team headed by Newport Beach developer, Jeffery Klein took over Victoria's lease on April 1. Klein hired Greenway Golf to maintain/operate the golf course. Greenway has a good reputation for fixing up golf courses, check them out on the web. Greenway has a US-one-of-kind machine called an over-planter that is used to plant new grass in the fairway, that is what the previous reviewer mistook as over seeding. They have used this method with success, we expect Victoria will be no exception. They are planting a hybrid Bermuda called Santa Ana, once it starts taking hold, it will spread throughout the fairway. Yes, right now as they do the over planting the fairways are all chewed up, but this shouldn't last for long, maybe 2-3 weeks. They will probably complete all 17 fairways (they aren't doing 14) by the end of this week. Electric carts will have to stay off for about 10 days after the hole is completed. Walkers can go anywhere. With success, Victoria will have some of the best fairways in the county, go ahead and laugh and we'll see who gets the last laugh. Greenway's agronomist, Marc Logan, has had great success at other courses they have fixed. Finally, Greenway plans to greatly improve the driving range. I was told they will close the range for about a month while they do this. Victoria is one of the best layout in the county but has suffered from below average fairway conditions. Once Greenway fixes the fairways and driving range, we will have one really good golf course.

17 of 18 holes are now fully open, only #7 is still a temporary par 3. Course plays to 35-36 = 71. Fairways and greens are in excellent shape. Tees are very good except where some depressions remain from gopher tunnels. Gophers are now hard to find although there remain ground squirrels and rabbits but these guys mainly tunnel off the fairway. Sand traps are OK, thin in some spots, but overall OK. Rough is tough, they've let it grow and balls sit down and are hard to find at times. There is now a definite premium for hitting the fairway. Playing traffic is picking up but still sparse compared to Chester and Alondra. This might change when they open up all fairways to electric carts. In my opinion, VIC is hands-down a better course than Chester/Alondra. At VIC, the shot you have to play is right in front of you, you can see the target down to the green. Not so at Chester where a lot of shots/putts involve guessing because you cannot see the green surface and greens are sloped severely. I don't mind the light traffic at VIC, like having your own country club.

Played early AM Friday November 15. All sodded fairways are open for play. Seeded fairways 7,11,13 remain as temporary par 3s, course plays to 35-34=69 par. They did an excellent job sodding the fairways, the paspalum sod is high quality, smooth, and nice to play off. The course is looking very good and fun to play. Tee boxes are very good, greens are excellent as always. There is hardly any play currently, getting out even early is not a problem. Victoria is in much better playing condition now. The seeded fairways may take a while with winter coming but the rest of the holes are in fine shape. The real test is how the course looks a year from now. I think the superintendent Arnie is going to do a good job as long as he gets the support he needs to address issues when they happen.

The sod experiment on the 6th fairway looks successful, that fairway is much improved. The county requested cost estimates from Victoria to do the same thing to the rest of the fairways next year. That estimate has been provided. If they get the requested money from the county, they should be able to do a lot of improvement to the fairways. The grass used on 6th was seaspray paspallum which is a very hardy grass resistant to salt and it has taken well on that fairway. Let's hope they get the money to fix the rest of the fairways.

Course management is attempting to address issues with many bare spots on the fairways. They recently sodded large portions of the 6th fairway ... let's wait and see if this works. Victoria's fairways have always been a challenge to keep lush, probably because it is sitting on a dump with gas emanating from the ground. If they can fix the fairways, this course would be great ... the greens are very good (people need to fix ball marks more), the tees have been fixed and they are now excellent, and the course routing is very challenging. People who run the pro shop/starting times are very cordial, friendly, and professional.

If they managed pace of play so rounds took no more than 4 hours, they could make a whole lot more money. The course is a good bargain. They have some real good holes.

For the money, $28 walking on weekends, this course is a bargain. From the back tees, it plays 6804 yards, one of the tougher layouts lengthwise in LA County. Fairways are decent, not perfect, and greens are very good, rolls are smooth and true. Also, a new course superintendent was hired a few months ago and is making visible improvements. The one problem is pace of play. The course management doesn't do anything, literally, to manage pace of play. So, 5+ hour rounds are common.
