"I wish that I could still hit golf shots as consistently well as I remember hitting them years ago. Of course, it could be that my memory is as poor as some of my more recent golf shots?"

I enjoy following the PGA, LPGA & Champions tours, especially their major tournaments. Have enjoyed watching the real pros in person for 20+ years, try and take in at least one pro event every year. Especially like watching the pro's on the range, where you really get great insight into their sheer consistency.
My golf pet peeve? The guy with a vanity handicap @ the water cooler. When I talk with a new acquaintance who claims to have a low single digit handicap, I often find them to be 10 - 15 shots worse than they claim to be after we play. Maybe they break 80 on a career day from the white tees, riding in a cart, with mulligans and taking every putt within 3 ft. as a gimme? I have gotten scowls from many when I tell them I usually play the blue or occasionally still the black tees, walk whenever I can, putt everything out on all 18 holes and the only mulligans allowed are when you go OB or lose a ball, and that's called stroke & distance after replaying from the previous spot. The other guys I hate are the ones who can't count past bogey. Haven't we all played at least one round with someone who had multiple penalty shots on a hole, flubbed 2 chips, then 3 putted, yet claimed they made a bogey?
I prefer to walk when I play, I feel like it paces the round better and that I usually play better golf than when I ride a cart. Riding back and forth with a cart makes it not only harder to judge the distance your ball traveled, it also defeats many of the things I think are great about this game... The exercise, the stamina required to play well for 18 holes and just plain taking the time to enjoy the sights and sounds of the beautiful outdoors. Walking from shot to shot provides the opportunity to plan out and hopefully execute what is required to best my real opponents on any given day... the elements and the course I'm playing (not necessarily my playing partners).
I swing hard because I was John Daly with a driver BEFORE anyone had ever heard of John Daly. I can manage a course reasonably well when trying, but there is rarely a tree, lake or bunker I won't try to go over unless trying to do so and failing will cost me with $$$ on the line. Then I'll try and play more % golf. But if it's "just" a regular round & losing a ball/stroke on the many times I don't make it... that isn't enough of a detriment in most of my rounds to supress the feeling you get when you actually DO pull off a shot that would make a PGA Tour pro wink & grin.

Great early bird deal of $22 to walk. This is a City of Portland muni, no frills but for the $$$, is a great deal. I walked 18, often laying down an extra ball for practice shots while playing alone in 3 1/2 hours. The greens were smooth, firm and medium fast. I usually can read greens fairly well, but there were breaks that I had a hard time reading on some greens. It's unusual for me to read break in one direction and the ball actually goes the other way, which happened twice today. The fairways were lush and well maintained, as were the tees. Very few areas with severe divot damage. The rough is not too punitive, usually the ball sits up nicely. However, there are hundreds of tall, thick, mature trees lining every fairway that will catch stray shots and challenge your recovery shots skills. Only a few holes have water or OB. Overall, I like the layout. Fun course that measures app. 6500 from the blues. Many holes have slight elevation changes as you constantly are going up/down rolling hills and almost every hole turns slightly (almost no straight holes). While there are no real signature holes that stand out as a great golf hole, there aren't any really poorly designed holes either. Fun course in excellent shape! » Close $25 to walk. Fun little tree lined layout where you can make some birdies. That said, I was very disappointed in the overall course conditions considering how nice the weather has been locally for the past couple of weeks. The fairways looked like they hadn't been mowed in several days, on many holes it was tough to tell where the fairway and light rough merged. Your lie was basically the same whether in the middle pf the fairway or 20 yards off the fairway. They must have had a fungus issue previously on their greens. The poa annua greens had hundreds of silver dollar sized to fist sized bare spots, and several had large discolored patches. The tees were average and there are no sand traps on this course. The course was not nearly in as good a condition as when I first played it last summer. » Close
