Got a fairly last minute threesome at Montebello this past Saturday and we all walked, playing from the blue tees and paired with another single. The nines are still switched and it really does take a lot away from the course. I truly hope they fix the routing here sooner rather than later as it does nothing for the round's flow in its current state.

First off, for a busy Saturday there were absolutely no services on the course which is disappointing. Not a single cart service came around and with the nines reversed, it's entirely inconvenient to snack up at the turn since the now 9th green is the opposite direction to the clubhouse from the 10th tee box. With cart service this would not be an issue, but it definitely is right now. And of course when we got to that now 10th tee box, another group had somehow either wrongly or didn't care jumped ahead of the group in front of us so all of a sudden a nice steady POP was completely obliterated.

In terms of course conditions, quite simply 'poor.' The greens are okay I guess. I don't recall any major issues with them as they were running medium-fast, held shots well and weren't too beat up in any way. The rest of the course was a bit of a shambles though with far too many fairways just dirt, a few others with good coverage but always thin or barren areas to be found. Simply not good. The bunkers as per usual at Montebello are tragically bad. Thin and hard as can be. Just not a lot of fun to be had in there and there are plenty to go around. Tee boxes were also mostly beat up and dirt, but a few were okay. All were level, so at least we can give some credit for that.

This course has always suited my eye in terms of the layout but reversed nines is simply not as fun and feels counterintuitive to how the course was designed. But when you add that in with poor conditions and not a lot of value for your greens fee, the feeling when departing is more 'good riddance' than 'can't wait to come back.' I sincerely hope it's a temporary state of things as I will always want to play this track once or twice per year, but I'll be waiting for more favorable reviews before considering it again.
