This is going to be a very snapshot in time review but it might be helpful for those who want to play the course right after the farmer's. Got to play the north yesterday while the pros were finishing up their final round on the south and it was an incredible experience to get to play the same set up as the pros did thursday/friday. same pins, same green speeds, same rough. so if you want to test your game and see how you'd do, no better time than right after the tournament. To me, the course conditions were absolutely perfect. tee boxes were all mint, fairways were absolutely perfect (never seen fairway divots filled so exquisitely), greens were running at 12 and it was a nightmare (for me), and the rough was a monster. Finding a ball just a few yards off the fairway was an adventure. Only managed to lose one on my second shot on the par 5 10th which was kind of blind but when i hit it i thought it'd be in the middle of the fairway. Was in a number of traps and they were all perfect; was able to get a good lie and nip the ball and get spin each time. I'm forever spoiled now. Walking the course under picture perfect postcard skies just made it that much more enjoyable. Could have played better, but the memories of that experience are what i'm going to remember most. If you're somehow able to get on and play in the next few weeks i can not recommend it enough. good luck if you do tho!

Tee boxes: level, wide, good coverage Fairways: well covered, great to hit from, a little dryer than a few weeks ago so ran out a bit more Bunkers: GUR was the norm as they are readying the course for the PGA tournament. Rough: the rough was recently cut in most areas but extremely hard to judge and hard to find balls, the stuff is grabby POP: cart paths only so 5 hours + Customer service: it’s a muni soooooo, adequate. One gripe is that the short game area has been closed for awhile and will stay so until AFTER the tournament?!?!? I pay taxes, visitors pay premium prices, we deserve a warm up area! Recommendation: yes, for the city senior rate.

Tees: mostly wide, level, with good coverage
Fairways: most tee shots had very little roll out, good condition, good to play from
Rough: the rough was rough, long and wet. Most balls sat down and made judging shots difficult to say the least.
Bunkers: I wasn’t in any but they looked fine
Greens: fast with a bit of bump, tough combo making putting problematic, I fixed quite a few ball marks and the longest putt I made was 6’.
Customer service: all fine except one always needs to tread lightly with the starters (some seem ready to explode at the least provocation), snack cart making rounds and friendly.
POP: pushing 5 hours +
Recommendation: I usually don’t play Torrey this time of year (before and just after the PGA tournament) as conditions can be rough. It’s worth senior city card holder rate but probably not full visitor rack rate (unless you like the abuse).

Walked Torrey Pines North Tuesday Sept 16th joined by buddies Steve, Mark and Matt. 1st time here for 4/5 of us. Our tee time was 1048am. Weather was absolutely scoring weather with hardly any wind and a pleasant 75 degree day. Did I tell you how much I love the weather here. All staff in proshop and starting booth were friendly. Used the practice facilities for a short warm up and out again right on time.

To start with the layout I loved North even more. The front nine is very gettable from holes 5 through 9 with a couple tough holes to start. Ample wide fairways with some doglegs like the beautiful dogleg left 4th hole. They have a short par 4 here on the front 290 yds which I knocked my drive to 15 feet. Just some fun holes. The back nine is really though where this course shines and gets a little tougher with some incredible elevation changes on 15 and 16th. Camera time on those holes. My favorite holes here were 4,7, 14, 15 and 16. Once again like South defense of this course is the strategic greenside and Fairway bunkering and the rough when missing the fairways. For us yesterday the rough was dry and benign which made playability quicker.

The greens had maintenance completed almost a month ago and most of the greens had some ball Mark damage and were very soft on approaches. Playable but not in as good of shape as South. Rated 6.5/10

Fairways were starting the browning out process before full overseeding so I would say 40 percent green and 60 percent brown with still nicely padded tighter lies. Some more room here to bomb away especially on the front nine and holes 10, 11 and 18. Rated 6.5/10

Was not in any bunkers on the north but they looked similar in texture to the south.

Tees were level and in decent shape. Rated 7/10

The rough on the north was the poorest aspect of both courses. Dry, wispy, thin and basically non existent as they start the overseeding process. This made scoring much easier. Rated 6/10.

For a 155 non resident walking when both courses are in primo shape this would be the best bang for your buck midweek. Highly recommended for layout and views on the back nine 14-16 stretch.

Played Torrey North on Wednesday as the last round of the San Diego swing. Overall the conditions are pretty good. Fairways are great. Nice and lush throughout without any thin or brown areas that I saw. Greens, were flowering but still rolled fairly smooth albeit at a much slower pace than Aviara. Not sure if Aviara greens were that fast or Torrey was that slow but a huge difference between the two. Tee boxes were level with ample coverage. Bunkers were also great as you would expect from a course of this quality. Rough was absolutely BRUTAL! Not that deep but super sticky and would grab your club.

I’m not a huge fan of the layout as there are only a few interesting holes. Most are just dead straight with little to no trouble. I get the no trees between the fairways as it keeps the view opened up to enjoy the scenic ocean below. But some dog legs here and there would hurt. Put in a water hazard on the par 5’s for a forced carry on second shot? Something to make you think. Just my opinion is all.

Played Torrey yesterday...was about the 4th group off.

Fairways are still in amazing shape. Phenomenal coverage and sponginess allowing you to take divots. Even as they were doing work, they were cleaning to make sure the fairways were phenomenal.

Greens - was not quite as impressed here. Bumpy, sandy, just not super impressed with them. Most rolled alright but for a few of them, it definitely shaped the opinion of the course.

Rough - man this place is hard. Hard to find your ball, hard to tell how hard to swing out of it, just made it tough overall. Add to it - all the clippings from the fairway being blown out to the rough, made it harder to walk and find your ball.

Bunkers - was in 2. 1 geeenside on no. 1 and a fairway on no. 17. Greenside was terrible. Next to no sand in it. Watched my partners play out of several as well, and they had the same though. After the turn though, the bunkers seemed a lot better. Much more sand and easier to play out of.

Pace of play - we walked and were done in about 4.40. At the turn, the guy told us we were behind even though we were on top of the group in front of us and had no one behind us for several holes.

If I was a local, this would be my favorite course. Being that I'm not, I think the north is the only one I'd play here. Not trying to pay 300 for the south when there's other courses with similar views for costs significantly less up the coast.

Perfect day at TP North. Cool early then warming up into full sunshine. Went off at 9:18 and finished in just under 4 hours. Check in a breeze, everyone nice and friendly. Show respect get respect, period.
Tee boxes: mostly level, wide and clean.
Fairways: almost perfect with good rollout and ball sits up nice
Rough: cut down to a pretty uniform 3”, still sticky and penal
Bunkers: well maintained with great sand coverage
Greens: if it weren’t for ball marks, I fixed dozens, the greens were near perfect. Accepting, great roll and FAST!
POP: like I said just under 4 hours so excellent
Customer service: great, saw the snack cart twice on both sides. Check in smooth and professional
Recommendation: of course, much better for city residents, but hey we pay taxes! Views, playing conditions, the vibe . . . it’s my favorite golf facility.

Day 2 of the San Diego trip landed me at Torrey Pines North course. This is the second time playing here and it’s a nice course but other than the ocean views nothing spectacular. Again the views or great so this review is more about the actual course itself. The layout is pretty ho hum with a number of been there done that holes. They change up the length of the holes which are all pretty much straight. There’s no real danger if you spray the ball of the tee sans a couple of holes. In fact you are often rewarded with an open shot if you spray it “too” far off line.

Condition wise it was decent. Fairway’s are narrow. Let me clarify that. They are hosting a top amateur tournament in a month or so so the actual thin fairway is narrow. However the landing area with the rough which isn’t too penal is fairly generous. As mentioned before, if you go outside of that, you often land in the adjacent fairway. there are only a few trees on the course to get in you way.

Coverage on both the fairways and rough were fine. The last time I was here, the greens were very slow. They were faster today but still only rolled at a medium pace. The greens don’t have too much undulation. Just enough to challenge you but still very fair. The greens were riddled with pitch marks. Both repaired and not fixed. We tee’d off at 7am so my guess is most of the pitch marks were from the previous day.

No issues with the tee boxes or sand traps. Both were of sufficient quality.

Combining the price and conditions to that of Spanish Bay, I’ll take Spanish hands down. However, when in San Diego, Torrey isn’t a bad option. Especially if you can get the resident rate.

Lucked into a noon tee time this morning. Times are tough to come by these days. You must continually check the city app waiting for someone to give up a time. That being said it’s worth the hassle as this is a great course, location, condition, layout and challenge. It was a perfect postcard kinda day and the conditions were solid all around. The greens were a bit hard and the poa annua is creeping in, the greens are splotched with it. They roll well, but not perfect. Maintenance is coming up at the end of the month.
