Be advised, I went over today for a twilight practice round and found them doing major punching and sanding of the greens. I probably play there too much because it is local, cheap, convenient, and more challenging than it would seem at first blush. It's generally in pretty good shape -- at least until today. Greens here are usually pretty decent and challenging. After a couple of weeks or so to heal, they should be good to go. It's generally an easy course to get on, so if you want a nine-hole practice round to work on everything except putting, for the next couple of weeks it should be even less busy than usual.

Altadena Golf Course is a Par 35 9 Hole Regulation Golf Course operated by LA County and managed by DC Golf. The course is mostly flat and a short course with some long Par 4 holes with wide and straight fairways in the course, and it measures almost 3000 yards off the blue tees. The driving range mostly uses grass most of the time, but most of the time, the grass in the range is poorly maintained, and some tees are mostly all dirt you are hitting off of, it is $8 for a large bucket, also the course has a practice chipping green, a large putting green, and a practice bunker seperated from the chipping and putting green. The green fees are $16 on weekend/holidays, $14 on weekdays, $12 twlight, around $7 for a cart, and $5 for juniors. It is a fun course for everyone, it will give experience for a beginner to play a regulation long course, and a practice from the challanging regulation courses for adavanced players. The course is decently maintained, but when I played there, all the greens were just newly aerated, but the fairways are acually pretty good when I played there, but most of the time, the course is poorly maintained with the fairways bad, and some of the greens poorly maintained, but some of them are really slopey.

We played twilight on Friday. It took us about 2 hours or so to play 9 holes. Condition of course is in good condition. This is one of my favorite courses to play. It is relatively flat and beginner friendly. There are a couple of long holes where you can really grip it and rip it. The fairways and greens now are the nicest I've seen all year. It usually is not hard to get a last minute tee time here. But it can get quite busy on the weekends. Will definitely be back here to play again!

A perfect course to walk. Almost completely flat with some greens. From what I understand it was originally an 18 hole par 3, but was converted to 9 holes. Course has some distance to use the driver on. Can stress enough how pleasent it is to walk 9 flat holes. Dodn't even think about that cart.

I played Friday June 8 2007 at Altadena. Play was kind of slow because of the Tournament that was finishing up. No.9 tee box is being remade so the tee box is up by about 30 to 40 yrds. I would say the course is in pretty good condition. O yah to play 9 $13.50 if you want to walk. What a great deal!!!

Played 9 at Altadena. The challenge on this generally flat course is the deceptive greens -- they don't look like much until you play them -- some domed and hard to hit, some multi-tiered, and even the "flat" ones have the subtle slope-away-from-the-mountains effect. With modest expectations, it's a good local track. I think the biggest negative is the dry fairway lies can too often be thin to where even a well-placed drive results in a challenging shot off something close to hardpan. It is what it is: an inexpensive, local convenient fix, generally easy to get a tee time. In the meantime, I've stopped twitching, sweating and asking my wife the yardage to the bathroom, so I guess the fix worked.

HOLES ARE SET UP IN A ROW FAIRWAYS ARE TIGHT SO YOU HAVE PLAYERS FROM OTHER HOLES IN YOUR FAIRWAY TOO MUCH!

Nice 9 hole usually not too crowded. Hole number 2 is a personal favorite of mine from the back tees it presents a challenge. There are 2 decent par 5's on this course. Hole number 4 requires a long tee shot to reach in two. The last hole a par 5 has an elevated green and is a good finishing hole.

This course is for people who have little time and might want to work on their game during the weekdays. The price is very affordable and definitely worth it for a quick-golf.

I play Altadena as often as any course because it's easy to get the nine in rather than a full eighteen when you need a fix. Altadena is a course that you can usually walk in and, if you aren't sent out immediately, you will probably be sent out very soon. That alone is nice to have in your back pocket, considering how busy many courses can be. The course itself is niether as visually interesting nor as busy as it's sister course, Eaton Canyon down the road, although both sit virtually in the shadow of the mountain range so you look up at the same mountain view. Rather beautiful in a late afternoon sun. Altadena initially seems fairly flat but has some subtle challenges. The first time I played there, the greens bit me on the butt. There is a gentle predominant slope to the area/course that also applies to most of the greens and you can tend to under-read the break away from the mountains. Also, several of the greens are elevated with domed crowns that, coupled with the overall slope, can make the putting really tricky. Deceptively so. The first hole is an almost 460 yard par-four -- longer than the par-five fifth hole running parallel to it. It has a resonably generous fairway, but it takes two good pokes and I don't see too many reach it, so it gets your attention right away. Tough to start out with a par. The sixth is a short, tempting par-four with a strategically placed fairway bunker that narrows the options for the average hitter and makes it a little bit of a risk/reward for the longer hitter. The seventh is a narrow par-four, again with a fairway bunker that narrows it down further for most players. The ninth hole is a par-five and the only hole I have an issue with. The three tee-marker sets have been clumped together in the forward teeing area for a long time now with the back tee box sitting unused. It would be a nice length par-five if they would utilize that back tee-box. The last green was also in really bad shape until recently with large areas of dirt. Recently, they seemed to grafted in some new surface so that while it still has a little way to go, it looks like it's going to recover. Most of the surface is at least playable now. Overall, the fairways are good and set the ball up well, and the greens have a decent medium pace, a little towards quick. There is a grass driving range and the general feel is very low key and local. If you are hankering to get out don't have time for eighteen or can't get a tee time anywhere else, you could do worse. It's a pleasant local course.
