Played in a Rancho Park Men's Club tournament this weekend and the venue of choice was the always fun Brookside #1 in Pasadena. We played under threatening skies that fortunately never broke, but it was a little cooler and windier than normal, making for an even more challenging round than usual on this tough course. My group had a 10:50am tee time with two walkers and two riders. The carts at Brookside I noticed now have speakers built into the sides, almost like sideview mirrors on your car. We were assigned the red tees (thanks to my currently abysmal handicap), which was still a good challenge at this long course but actually was pretty fun to move up and not stress as much on every tee shot. Greens were running really nicely and quite speedy, but the pin placements on some holes were absolutely diabolical. There's nothing worse than chipping on past a pin and then seeing it on the downhill side of a harsh slope with no chance to stop it. Everyone suffered. The ball on some greens seemed to pick up pace going uphill! It was pretty crazy, but they're in good shape and rolling nicely. Fairways were just okay to be honest. There weren't a ton of lush areas, but everything was playably thin. I've seen it much better out there in the past so I trust they will get back to that condition soon enough. Rough was playable and accessible. I did not face any bunkers all afternoon but I watched my playing partners perform admirably and heard no complaints. Tee boxes look to have been recently worked on so they were in nice shape, maybe in some cases a tad bit shaggy but overall quite good. We had cart service swing by twice which was great and of course the course layout is one of SoCal's best as they routinely host SCGA qualifiers here due to its quality. Played on Sunday in a Rancho Park Men's Club event at Brookside #1 and thankfully the weather played along for a very fun round in Pasadena. The rate was pre-paid for the tournament of course, but still had to pay an additional $18 for the cart and unfortunately the driving range is currently closed so don't do what I did and get there an hour early.

Right now the greens at Brookside are devilishly quick and running really nicely. That is far and away the best part of the course right now as the bunkers were definitely heavy after the recent rains, the tee boxes were good but not great, and the fairways had some good coverage in some spots, but very thin and beat up in others. Rough was nice and thick but playable.

POP was dreadfully slow though as my group was the very last one for the tournament so all complaints only directed to RPGC players who for whatever reason weren't moving quite as quickly as they always seem to do at Rancho Park. It was definitely tough to keep any rhythm going throughout the round but it was a beautiful day again finally so we managed it.

Brookside #1 is always a great layout and very tough in terms of length (even from the whites which I was assigned) and tricky trees everywhere that keep narrowing a decent number of the fairways. There are some wide open ones as well though to keep you honest.

While I have seen Brookside in fairer condition, I think it will look much better very soon and I would not hesitate playing here again and again.

Found a great time for Brookside #1 this past week on Friday late morning and realized just after hitting 'submit' that the Rose Bowl game was being played just two days before. I kicked myself but it was too late to cancel and figured my buddy and I would just bite the bullet.

Fortunately, it wasn't all that bad. Sure, there were a few dry areas and some dirt patches here and there, complimented by some GUR spots, but overall the course was quite playable and most of my initial fears failed to be realized. Very happy about that.

Greens were in really good shape actually - luckily they rope those (and the bunkers) off when there are games at the Rose Bowl and the course is used as one of its parking lots. They rolled really nice and quick and even held shots well. Fairways and rough, as previously stated, weren't too bad at all, but I have seen things more lush around here so I look forward to those days again. Bunkers were a bit on the thin side but not too terrible, while the tee boxes were mostly okay but a few of them didn't bother to use tee markers, so we kind of guessed and moved on our way (played the blue tees).

POP was quite good and the older twosome we were paired with allowed us to move ahead on the 14th hole because they thought they were slowing us down (despite our protests). I don't recall seeing any cart service and the snack/beverage shop near the pro shop isn't the most convenient, but it gets the job done.

Overally a nice day out and very happy it wasn't as disastrous as my imagination conjured it up to be when I booked.

All carts are monitored by program if you go off the cart path, the cart stops and must reverse out. Cannot drive on fairways.

Played 10/24 8am tee time. The course is in ok shape. All tee boxes were aerated so no reviews but I'll say 50/50 not very level. The fairways were mixed bag. It's not as nice as I remember. It wasn't bare ground but lots of patches with very thin coverage. Same for the rough maybe slightly worse than the fairways. Lots of thin spots. Bunkers were ok but did notice some on the thin side. By no means are the Bunkers fluffy. Greens were great! Fairly smooth and on the fast side. A pleasure to put on.

The best group of starters, marshals, pro shop employees, and restaurant staff. Both golf courses are great too- fast greens. I play at least 2-3 times a week and always impressed.

Played a Sunday round at Brookside #1 with a buddy and the crew there were kind enough to cancel one in our group who bailed without any penalty (had tried calling numerous times the day before but no one answered because the course was closed for the UCLA football game at the Rose Bowl). We were paired with two singles then with a 9am tee time and opted to play from the whites. Playing the day after a UCLA game is perhaps not ideal, but what was worse was the Rose Bowl flea market that turned the parking lot area into chaos. It also didn't help that the 9th hole was cut down to a makeshift par 3 (although we still played it further back as a driveable par 4) due to all the patrons around the stadium at the flea market. There were also some tables, porta-potties and other miscellaneous items scattered around the fairways on those holes in closer proximity to the RB. The rest were fine and only saw some light damage in a few fairways from over-zealous parkers. In terms of conditions, the greens are really in nice shape right now. They're fast, they're true and they require some very good approach shots or chips/pitches to keep them not only on the greens, but close to the pins. I had a few get away from me for sure but they were at least consistent throughout. Tee boxes were in good shape with most level and all with good coverage, while the bunkers seemed fine as well (only landed in one on 18). The fairways were mostly in good shape with a few thin areas here or there. There's a sizeable GUR area to the right of the green on the 7th hole (also near the stadium). POP was not so good unfortunately as we spent a lot of time waiting with the majority of that time sitting on the par 3 holes (no shock there). It was very deflating to get to the 17th hole and see one group on the green still with another waiting ahead of us to even tee off. It's a long and somewhat tricky course in places so I'm sure it's just a question of golfers biting off more than they can chew by playing the wrong tees. Cart service came around numerous times and the carts themselves were basic but functional. Nothing to really complain about there. Beautiful, warm November day as well - perfect for golf! Very challenging layout and a great test of golf - they use this course for SCGQ qualifiers so you know it's a good one. I played a very solid round and enjoyed it immensely, but next time I'll probably remember to just make tee times here when college football is off the schedule.

Rare Monday off to play golf, but friend had a tee time and I had a light day of work.

They are overseeding the tee boxes, so everything is moved up. Greens were good as they usually are here despite heavy volume of play. They were running at 9, remember the Rose Bowl break. Fairways had good coverage and sand traps had average amounts of muni sand. Rough was very spotty and they are doing construction on some of the holes on the back nine so lots of tractors and construction fences. Customer service was good and beverage cart roamed around but never came by to our cart. Happy Hour available now 3 pm to 6 pm Monday to Friday for your post round shenanigan's. Pro shop was well stocked and had a bunch of new TravisMathew swag. POP was 4.20 which was excellent for Brookside. Will return again since they do not do 5 somes still, which is a great idea!
