Played Sat. 10/25...off at 1:00 pm. Finished at 6:30 pm. Slooooow. There was some skins tourney going on so players were taking their time. Some of us were just there to play. The plus side was the course was in great shape. The greens are almost back in shape after punching in Sept. Very soft, very slow. We actually saw a ball get half buried in the green on a high wedge shot. The pins were tucked in places I've never seen for this course which made it more challenging than usual. The snack shop was closed when we went by at 4:30 pm. Couldn't believe it. The course was packed and you couldn't get a drink. Anyway, get out and enjoy this muni while it looks so nice.

Played today with a business friend and went off as a two-some at 1:00. He rode, I walked/carried. I knew it would be warm, but didn't realize until I got home and checked that it was around 100º at tee-off, with a slightly higher Real Feel. Now I know why I felt like I'd been beaten with a cricket bat by the 18th. All that aside, the good part was no one in sight in front or behind until the 10th, where a two-some caught up with us and we let them play through. After that, no one else within three holes of us. The fairways were in good shape and, as mentioned in previous reports, the greens are soft and run a little on the slow side but not bad. The rolls were true and generally not too many pitch marks. I was in one bunker and the sand was firm, but not hard -- not bad at all. No real complaints except that if you tack on a cart fee to the non-resident rate, you can play a much nicer course than a basic muni -- even one in good shape -- for tha money. I'm beat, but had a good time.

Played today 7/19/08 tee'd off at 5:45am, one of the quickest rounds I have ever played at this course finished in 3hrs and 40 mins.. Never waited, just kept going.. I haven't played Encino in almost 9 months, and the course is in good shape.. they must have manicured the course lately; the fairways were freshly cut, as well as the tee boxes. Greens soft and on the slow side, bunkers hard sand but in good shape.. The greens have way to many ball marks, I think that is a real characteristic of the city courses cause no one fixes there ball marks!!

Played Encino Golf Course on Monday 7/7/08. Called and asked for a 10:30 tee time and it was available. Played round in 4 hours. I had not played Encino in over 15 years and remembered it as being in fair condition. I was pleasantly surprised. The course was in terrific shape - tees to greens. I look forward to returning.

Played 6/16 at 7:00 am. Nothing exciting about this course, but a good place to practice. The greens are in fine shape & rolled well. The sand traps were the best I've seen here; fluffy & maintained. The par 5's are birdie holes, but the 3's are long and well protected. Very walkable; bring water!

Walked on this morning. Course is in good condition for a muni. Tee boxes were okay. Some were unleveled and beat up. Fairways are in great condition. Rough was manageable. Traps seemed hard still from the weekend rain. Greens were good, rolling a little slow but true. Some pin placements were easy though. Pace of play was okay. slowed down on the 15th and never sped back up. Overall was a good round at a good place.

walked on as a twosome, and got out within an hour. The teeboxes are in good shape, the greens are rolling smoothly, not very fast either. The fairways are thin in patches, but overall in good shape. Definitely an enjoyable experience for a public course that gets this much play.

Played Twilight on Sunday afternoon, 4.5 hrs is about average for this course. Greens could use about 2 more weeks to recover from Ariation, and then should be about perfect, most are in decent shape just a bit bumpy.

Played this on Thursday(3rd). course was in good condition. Tee boxes were nice, Fairways were decent with some dry patches. Greens were in great shape, pretty true. Pace was okay, we had a slow 3some in front of us, but our group was cool, which made it bearable. Overall, experience was great!

Played today on New Yr's Day, and this course is worth the green fee; however, the fairways are thin and muddy throughout the course, but the yardage and greens make up for it. We finished in about 5 hours, but could have finished in 4 if it wasn't for the slow group ahead of us.

Well, first course of a back to back.. pace of play was good, finished the round in 4 hours. The tee boxes are in good shape as well as the greens, kinda slow but what do you expect from a muni.. Fairways are a bit thin, but it is worth the green fee.

Played on August 31st in 108 degree heat. I loved the condition of the fairways as I never had a bad lie. The best fairways I've seen this year. The greens are very, very, very slow. We started right on time and finished in about 4:45, so the pace was decent. The par 3's are all long - quite a challenge. I like the variation in the length of the par 4's. The next time I play there I'm going to get there early and take advantage of the large practice area - two chipping areas, three huge practice greens. The driving range tees were covered which really helped given the heat. Most of the range is dirt, so the range balls were a little dirty. I just wish the driving range and parking lots were a little closer to the first tee - I had my cart bag with all my cr*p in it and it weighed a ton. Next time I'll bring my stand bag and take out the non-essentials. This course is definitely worth the money, especially if you don't mind the slow greens.

I'd have to rate it o.k. My biggest gripe would be the speed of the greens, they were SLOW, even for a muni course. also, there was no defining line between fairway and rough, it all kinda looked the same. Speed of play was good as was the price.

Played today for the 1st time. Curious how it compares with the other 18 on property.... This is not the most challenging layout, but in fair+ shape with some challenging par 3s. The back 9 is a stiffer test than the front. Pace of play was good and the price is right.

I would give the greens another week to be back to normal. Greens were still soft, slow and bumpy in spots. The fairways were ok and seemed to have more bare spots than usual. I have seen it better and hope the fairways improve in the upcoming months. The rough was good and thick. I agree that the rough should penalize you if you can't stay in the fairway. Tee boxes were recently punched, but no big deal since you can always find a spot.

I can't believe that we were able to finish in under 5 hours on a Sunday. We had to wait on the tee on half the holes and sometimes on our approaches, but not too much more than that.

Played on Thursday 5/3/07 at 8:40 a.m.

Kudos to the greenskeeper at Encino. He's doing a very good job with what he had to work with and the course was in fantastic shape!

The Greens, having been punched 3 weeks to a month ago still have tiny holes, but the don't really affect the roll. Balls rolled very true. Only complaint was speed, you really had to mash an uphill putt. Greens on 16/17/18 could use a little work, but it's purely cosmetic.

Fairways are in very good shape. Atypical for a city course, the fairways have very nice grass coverage. Same problem as Woodley, with the flood basin and inconsistant soil, but Encino has taken care of the fairways nicely.

Rough was actually rough. It was fin to play a city course that penalized you for missing a fairway. Rough was deep in areas where it should have been, and light were it should have been. Greenside rough was tough, but not impossible, leaving you with some decisions regarding strategy.

Traps and Tee Boxes were the only downers. Traps were wet, it was very difficult to get a decent lie, a consistant lie out of the sand. Tee-Boxes had been punched, leaving some clumps of dirt, but the grass coverage was still very good, and it affected play barely, if at all.

Very nice bang for the buck here at Encino. Still a step below Rancho, and possibly the Griffifth Park Courses (I'll let you know when I play Harding on Thursday) but still in very good shape. Will give you an enjoyable, challenging, but not frustrating round for mid-high handicappers, and some good work for the low handicappers.

Customer service was top-notch, starter and cart concessionair were very nice, and the resteraunt serves a variety of good food. Bring your own water though, $2 for a bottle at the snack shack?!?! Whats with that?

Greens are in very good shape. The best I've seen in a long time. So, it must be time to punch them. Tee to green, the usual winter time scruff, but ok. Friday morning tee time was a 5 hour tour.

Great Deal for Twilight. The $13 Price is more than worth it with plenty of time to finish the round and great conditions and views for the price. Diesn't compete with higher priced courses but has no competition for its price.

First, the good: Second group out- 6:44 a.m., greens in great shape, smooth if not a little slow. The bad: I was not expencting to pay $16 for a single cart fee (I thought it was $12). The ugly: O.K., it is winter and all that kikuyu and bermudagrass is dormant. Is it too much for a muni to over seed the fairways? If the grass is dormant, maybe there could be less watering; several wet spots from irrigation made some areas unplayable.

Hadn't played here since 2003, and based on the prior reviews was not expecting much. Surprise! I found the course to be in rather nice shape, fairways were very good, greens generally good and smooth with a few patches of weeds here and there. Bunkers were fine. Remember this is not Trump National or Pelican Hill, it's $22 for a round on an old traditional track. For the $$, can't complain! Maybe because of the heat (100 degrees) the course fairly empty, walked right out at noon and finished in well under 4 hours.

Played Encino and wasnt impressed.

Course was in rough shape, Woodley was much better last time I played, next I think Ill try Balboa but Im not expecting much.

Many bare spots due to poor maintanence and I saw patches on the greens that were far from professionaly done. Layout was nothing fun and pace of play was OK but still stop and go.

Course is in good shape. Aerating the fairways starting 6/12. Greens could use a mow. One thing that needs attention here, the bunkers. The greenskeeper seems content to have the public take care of the bunkers. Unraked & footprints are the conditions of all the bunkers here & Balboa. How hard is it to clean up your own mess? Apparently, too hard.

Played Encino on 4/21. The greens on the back 9 were in much better shape than those on the front, mainly because they were aerated earlier. The rough was a mess (as always), but all in all the course was pretty nice and the fairways were in very good condition. This is a forgiving, flat, and long course if you haven't played it before.

Being a city golfer, I was pleased with a few aspects of Encino golf course. The greens are in much better such, in regards to the speed, which has lately been quicker than normal, and the roll has been pretty smooth. I played on 3/2 and the greenskeeper must have wanted revenge on the players, tee boxes were in the back and the pins were tucked, it made the course play totally different and somewhat challenging. My only negative comment is that the greens were recently painted with what i think was fertilizer and this makes your golf ball green, and it makes the greens, greener than the ones you see on tv. Besides that, a typical round in the city, you get what you pay for, and what you get is an enjoyable round in the city.

Played on Feb. 5th and the course was in decent shape, but the pace on play was a little slow as to be expected for playing before the superbowl. My only major complaint would be that on the greens the bowl seemed to bounce more than roll, but that has become normal if you are playing any muni. course in the LA area.

I agree with jaui, Encino is in pretty good shape. As he mentioned, some of the tee boxes are moved due to aeration, but overall Encino isn't too bad. Now if they could just do something about the Sunday afternoon 5 1/2 hour rounds. Green aeration starts this week, after that it should be in great condition.

Encino golf course is playing above LA City standards. The greens were rolling fantastic yesterday. Softer then I can remember and pretty smooth. This is fairly wide open layout, flat, lots of big trees (great for shade), and long. Hole 11 is the best hole on the course. Takes a big right to left drive, well played long iron/fairway wood, and solid putt to make birdie.

Played on Sunday, 05/29. Course was very wet in some areas and the fairways needed to be mowed. The greens were lush but really needed to be mowed and rolled as they were very long (some were longer than the fairways) and slow. The fairways have so many different types of grass growing it's like a science experiment out there. The pace of play was slow at best. A much better muni track is Harding or Wilson or another step up is Brookside.

Encino is the type of golf course that is a good deal all around. However, if you really want to work on your game, as a lower handicap player, Moorpark and Rustic Canyon from the back tees are far better choices.

Played Encino 1/22. Course was in decent shape especially after all the rain. The rough however was long in many places since it hasn't been cut in quite some time. The greens were pretty smooth and consistent as far as speed is concerned. Hole 14 was turned from a par 4 to a par 3 since the green got flooded. It should be open soon. Pace of play was 4.5 hours.

For the money it is well worth it. From tee to green is a challenge for most amature players due to length. Most par fours are 400 + yards but greens a suprisingly large. so getting it on the green is not a problem. Fairways on the other hand can be spotty so course management is a must. The par 5 fourth hole is a tester. Not only is the length an issue but the annoying Radio control planes on the near by park is quite disturbing like mosqitoes. I would say Over all is good but could be better.

Since they've taken on the new management, Encino and Balboa have been generally better, but it seems the GK's haven't been as consistent.

Don't even bother with practice chipping as the chipping area looks like it was used for planting land mines. ;-)

Played 6/8, first off as a two at 5:25am. Conditions were not too bad for Encino. The greens could've been a little smoother, but that's typical. The best part by far is the sand... must be brand new. Fairways are sketchy, rough is inconsistant, tees aren't too bad. I actually was expecting better with the LA City Championships this weekend...

Oh well... would'a had a great score with a few less putts!

Does anyone know where the fairways end and the rough begins? If you do, please let the maintenance staff know. I think they're looking for it.

Played on Saturday (5/15). Greens on the front were horrible. A ton of bald spots. They improved on the back nine. The course looked better in the middle of Winter.

The greens were recently punched. In many places they were undersanded and therefore unexceptably bumpy.

Played Encino early Saturday, 4/17. Greens are in pretty good condition, though they're about to start aerating within the next week. The fairways at Encino are in appalling condition, though. They're clumpy, lumpy, and full of bare spots. There are probably eight or ten different species of grass in these fairways, many of which appear to have been planted in plugs that just never spread well. Don't look for improved conditions here any time soon.

Note to Encino/Balboa regulars: in the bunkers, you'll find stick-like devices with black, rubber crosspieces at the end. These are called "rakes," and it's customary - and courteous - to use them to smooth out the sand in the bunker after you've walked around in there and taken however many swipes you require to extricate your golf ball. Next time you're finished hitting out of a bunker, please consider using one of these "rakes" to clean up after yourself. Thanks.

greens are so slow it is ridiculous, you have to dunk the ball into the hole just to make a simple put. besides that, the course is starting to green up and the rough is very long in some places.

This is one of the better muni courses I've played. Pace of play wasn't too bad for a weekend. Everything kept moving and marshals were monitoring well. Wide open fairways. Good course for the price.

I have played this course about 75 times since moving to California 30+ years ago. I have NEVER seen the fairways in such horrible condition. If you play the ball "down", it seems to find it's way between two tuffs of weed, which makes it very tough to get your club on the ball. The greens while slow were good. Somebody should determine why Encino/Balboa condition is so inferior to the other city courses?

Played 3/14 at 8 am. Played first hole in the fog but after #2 it all sun and 80 degrees for the rest of the day. Greens were very nice and smooth. Not to soft and held well. Fairways were typical, more than your fair share of bare areas and some mud balls but I've seen worse. Overall all, a pleasant Sunday with good friends.

Yep, below is still true, but after another round of rain, the course is pretty mushy. Starting to green up nice though. The greens were quite good... well, once we got to the ones that they'd mowed. Nice and smooth. I saw some water still in a few of the bunkers.

Fairways are hit and miss, but that's usually true here.

Encino is in typical winter condition. The fairways are dormant but are starting to come alive. The sand traps could use more sand; one of them had practically no sand. The course appears to have survived the recent heavy rain without any problem.

The fairways were tragic. It would be nice to hit from a decent lie after a nice tee shot. You tend to come up the fairway praying for some grass under your ball.

The only reason I play this course is to practice. The greens were the only things that was somewhat decent on this course. The only excitement of the day came when my friend made a hole-in-one on the 184 yard hole #3.

Service and people are nice, for the money worth the time. Nice and wide fairways pretty easy Par-5's. Another words a great course to build up confedence.

As bad as I've seen this course. Greens on the course the only thing that actually were Green, well except for the putrid standing water everywhere. Bare, muddy spots everywhere. Really going to take a lot for this course to be in any kind of shape anytime soon. Just from the way the tee markers were laid out by the staff you can tell there is little pride in the greenskeeping staff at this dog track.

Played 12/30. The greens were possibly the best I've ever seen them at Encino. The rest of course is in the worst shape I've seen since I started playing there about 8 years ago. Almost no grass on the fairways. Almost every shot is like hitting off hardpan. Great, if you want to have a lot of practice making sure you strike the ball first. The tee boxes are also pathetic. So is the sand. At $22 to walk, the golf course is a questionable value. There is absolutely no excuse for the city letting the course degrade into this type of condition. I know it's winter, but this was sad.

the greens at encino are great, wickedly fast at some points, must be below the hole to score today. The rain did do some damage to the course, some trees were torn down and the bunkers are mini water hazards. The pace of play, about 5 hours was good for the weekend. There is also a 90 degree cart rule in effect due to all the rain. But unfortunately, the fairways are dry and thin, and the tee boxes are typical for the city, sloped, bare and just a pity. Encino is a great layout, but only if the course was as good as their greens.

Horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just horrible. Sure the greens are fine, but PACE OF PLAY is snail-like. 3 hrs for a front nine on a weekday morning is ridiculous. Add to this concrete fairways, boogery tee boxes, and rock piled sandtraps. Forget about it!

Walk on at about 1.15pm and was surprised to be able to go out as a single straight away. Greens were great. Very fast. A little bumpy but great for a city course. The rest of the course conditions are ok. Encino is a nice course for all golfers alike.

Played this morning as a single... first off in the rabbit group. Great foursome, nice guys. About 4 hrs, we weren't rushing too much. Foggy, and hard to find the pins (or greens for that matter!) for the first 3 holes, and then a beautiful sunrise, and perfect weather.

The greens were really wet from dew, so very slow until the end of the round. Tees were pretty good (I was playing blues), greens were pretty good for Encino, some fairways were dry in spots, rough was pretty variable from hard pan to thick and long, and the bunkers were recently groomed, so the dirt wasn't packed down like it can be.

Overall, a nice round for Encino.

The greens are as good they have ever been, and will ever be. Not great, but for this place - fantastic. Pace of play, 4 1/2 hours. The fairways have many bare spots. Hard to tell where the fairways meet the rough. It all looks pretty much the same.

Good pace for a Sunday morning (4.25 hours walking) on a LA City course. Fairways and tee boxes
were in good shape considering the amount of play this course gets. This course is long and forgiving.

Played Encino 10/5. Pace was good. Course was in the best condition I've seen this year. Greens and fairways were in good condition. Some bare spots in fairways but overall worth the green fee. Rates will be going up to 28.50 on Nov 1.

Played Tuesday morning, in the rabbit group. Conditions of the greens are outstanding for a Muni course, but a little of the slow side. Pace of play was great, at about 3 hours (but of course, we where the first group out, only got stuck behind some back niners on 17 and 18)

Okay--so this isn't Augusta or Shadow Creek, but if you are into rolling the peanut, this is a great place. The greens as of now are perfect--SLOW--but perfect. Maybe a 6.5-7 on the stimp. For the price of hitting 5 buckets, this is a better place to practice than the range.

Played early AM 8/7. Greens are agonizingly slow and quite inconsistent from one to the next. Most are probably running at about 3 or 4 on the stimp, but every so often there's a fast one. The collars around the greens are really nice, though, offering the option to putt or chip - these fringes/collars seemed especially well-groomed. Fairways are in decent shape without a lot of brownout or bare spots. Rough is ragged in places but generally pretty good. It's a course where you really feel like you ought to shoot a very low score, so you'll either walk away with a lot of confidence because you've bowled it over, or you'll walk away shaking your head and wondering how you can be so bad at such an easy game.

Dont'cha just LOVE golf?

I played last evening, and the course was just about empty. However, there was no consistency to any of the holes. Some greens were overgrown, and slow, while others were groomed well and super fast. The fairways were ok, but the tee boxes were horrible. A couple of them were in fair shape, but about 75% of them looked like they hadn't been groomed in weeks. All and all, it is a great course to practice some shots on.

Hey, yeah... good idea... ok, nobody go play early in the morning! Then I'll have the course to myself! That'd be great! heh, heh!

Played this morning... early. And lo and behold , the green punchers were out! We had to play fairway temp greens on two, and putt on one that was punched. Other than that, conditions are what you'd expect at Encino. The rough was pretty long here and there, and the sand was mud. There were bugs, but not more than there usually are at Encino and Balboa this time of year.

The course is in good condition considering it is a public course. The greens are pretty slow and they aren't "true". Fairways were in pretty good condition. Greens need to be mowed better. Maybe then the putts wouldn't be so slow.

For a public course that gets the kind of abuse from players that don't take care of it, the course plays very well. Greens are in very nice shape and fairways are good to very good. Playing time in early morning good, under 4 hours.

June 11th. The greens were rockin! I was impressed with how they have brought the greens back from the winter. The fairways were slow for some reason, could have been the weather from the last few weeks.

Had a good time, pace was decent. Can't beat the twilight rate for a course like this. $12.50 and we got in 15 holes.

June 2nd. Another enjoyable round. Particularly the pair of underwear hanging from a tree as you walk off the 6th green. A testament to the L.A. City's course maintenance. P.S. could somebody mow those greens more than once a week?

Played the course last weekend and it is a superb course for long-hitters. The fairways are wide and greens are smooth and properly maintained. We started at 0630H and we were done in 4.5 hours.

It is a "forgiving" course and I am looking forward playing it again one of these weekends.

Played Encino today (6/1) and had a 4.5 hour round (walking) which is not bad for a Sunday. Greens are smooth and soft and the best that I've seen them. Fairways are lush with some divot damage and some thin spots. Tee boxes in fairly good shape. Pace of play was great for a municipal course.

I've played Encino numerous times and today (5/29) was one of the best as for the conditions, except the greens were firm, bumpy and slow. The tough pin positions did not help my play (Couple pins tucked in the extreme rear of the green) with the molasses-like greens. Tee boxes are a little uneven, but what do you expect for a muni course played non-stop. The fairways have light aereation, no plugs, but they were rolling good on long drives. The rough was being mowed all over the course, so it was pretty clean.
Great muni course, really get to use your driver off the tee and the longer 4 pars, challenge your long game.
I think it's better than the Balboa and Woodley courses.

Played here 5/11. Teed off at 9:30 and played in four-and-a-quarter hours; after waiting for three groups at #3, the course opened up and we never waited again. Course is in pretty good shape, fairways are spotty but very firm. Greens, while generally smooth, are VERY soft and rather slow -- I hit one shot that simply plugged in its own pitch-mark! There's not much trouble to get in here, but the rough is wickedly inconsistent and can be quite penal because you can easily draw a very tough lie. Thank goodness for generous fairways. Fun course to tune up your long game.

Played Friday, 3/22. Teed off around 12:55. Course played in about five hours. Greens were smooth, but a little shaggy. Definitely slow. Some greens held pretty well, but most were pretty firm. Third hole required you to hit 10-20 yards in front of green in order to keep your ball on the green. Most fairways were green and fairly plush, but almost all contained some areas that were thin or had little grass. All in all, not a bad golfing experience for the price.

Play here regularly. It is a good pratice course. Some fairways are good but most have patchy areas. You never know what the bunkers will be like-sometimes hard, other times soft. Most tee boxes are in bad shape. Greens are in pretty good condition considering the condition of the course in general. It is hard to determine the speed of the greens. There is no consistency. If you don't have a tee time forget walking on for 18-holes.

Played Encino 2/9. Slow play was the order of the day but that's to be expected for a Sunday. The course played pretty well for what it is. The fairways were spotty and the tee boxes the same. I was surprised at how well the greens were for the amount of play.
I can only remember one hole(16 I think) that was bumpy. I was lucky enough to stay out of the sand traps except for once and there was actually soft sand. Not a bad play if you can get out during the week.

Tried to get on Saturday morning at 6:30. Gave up and played just the back nine. Tee Boxes were beat up, fairways were iffy - some were okay, others had bad spots.
Light drizzle didn't help the situation and made the slow greens even slower. Very difficult to put well. However, good FOOD in the restaurant!
