SURVEYOR REPORT Surveyor Report: 11/20/2004
For anyone dedicated enough to the game of golf to go through the trouble required to play a round at Los Verdes, this golf course more often than not proves it's worth as one of the best values in Southern California. On a clear day, the views are nothing short of spectacular (and with the notoriously sluggish pace of the fivesomes that make their way around the course, you'll have plenty of time to take them in.) If you finish your round here and can honestly say that you have played a course with prettier views for a sub-30 dollar price-tag, I'd challenge you to take a polygraph test on the spot.

For all of the ups that Los Verdes offers, so too come the downs. It's impossible to get a tee time (Call one week in advance before the sun comes up, or forget about it) and walking on is a challenge for any more than one person (and even with one, you might be hitting balls for 90 minutes before you start hearing names that were close to yours on the list). The pace of play is often horrific, and the conditions have historically been suspect.

Despite all of this, though, the upside is what truly makes Los Verdes one of my favorite places to play. The aforementioned views are unmatched in Los Angeles County, and quite honestly, the greens are in the best shape that I have seen in ten years. They are quick, true, and smooth. The fairways are playable, though not pristine, and the bunkers, once the morning dew has been raked away, are quite nice. Stray off the intended line of play, though, and you'll be playing a game of turf-roulette as the rough areas range from thin to gnarly to bare to brown to cabbage. It's clear that the efforts of the staff have been aimed at getting the greens into excellent shape. They have succeeded wonderfully at this, and if given the choice between superior greens and superior rough, I would venture to guess that most golfers would choose to have their putts roll nicely.

Last, but certainly not least, is the golf course itself. It is a pleasant mixture of easy and difficult holes, which are each accentuated by the fact that you truly can, on a clear day, see the ocean from each and every hole. The front nine winds through houses and provides no hint as to the spectacular nature of the back nine to follow. The 11th is a wonderful short par 4 with Catalina Island floating in the distance. 13 through 15 comprise a difficult 3 hole stretch of 400+ yard par 4s, climaxing with the downhill dogleg left 15th which boasts one of the most breathtaking views in all of golf. You'll probably carry the smile from this hole alone with you back to the clubhouse and completely overlook the fact that the 18th hole is goofy and truly a letdown after an otherwise superb inward nine. Either way, assuming you have the patience and dedication to deal with the realities involved in a round at Los Verdes, then you will not be disappointed. Despite significant shortcomings, It's truly one of the best values in California golf.
