I've only been playing this course for about a year, but it's in better shape now than at any time I've ever seen. The past few months have seen the greens spotty, brown, and sandy, but now they are beautifully green in color. Most surprising of all is the lushness of the aprons and rough surrounding the greens. Malibu CC is a bit out of the way, and unfortunately the repaving that's being done on the PCH is a real pain in the butt to drive through, but the course is in great shape, and you won't be waiting to hit every shot. You'll enjoy it.

Played on Tuesday morning 2/26. Perfect day. Had the course to myself. First time I've played this course. I really liked the layout. Interesting, fun, challenging without being too penalizing. I enjoyed the elevated tees on the par 3's. The greens were a little slow, probably due the recent rains. I would play this course more often if the fairways were in better shape. Although they were quite playable, they are definitely not lush. Some bare spots and patchy areas in the fairways. The setting is beautiful. It makes for a nice day of golf. This would be a real gem if the fairways were in better shape.

First time I played here and it was an awesome course to play. Course layout was excellent. There were several elevation change holes that made for a scenic and fun tee shot. Fairways were in good condition, alot of unrepaired divots though, roughs were short, which made for a fairly easy shot back towards the greens. Greens were in great condition. They were difficult to read and fast. If you were short or long it could cost you a 3 or 4 putt. We finished in about 4 hours, could have been faster, but we caught a slow 4-some on the last 4 holes. Other than that, a enjoyable place to play

Despite the frozen turf (We tee'd off at 6:54am) there was no frost delay!! The Tee boxes were in good shape and so were the fairways. But if you like fast greens with many breaks this is the place for you.. The greens had to be running at about a 12 and they made the pin placements kinda tough.. GPS on the carts makes things a bit easier instead of trying to find a sprinkler head. Overall a nice course..

Played Malibu Country Club today and was very impressed with the conditions of the course. Amazing how much better shape the fairways and greenside surrounds are from just September 7th when we had a Greenskeeper.org outing there. I was extremely impressed with the greens. They are rolling perfect - fast, smooth and incredibly receptive - a rare combination to be found in Southern California. The fairways were in great shape. Firm, lush with mostly excellent lies. The rough and greenside surrounds are much improved but still are thin in areas but certainly playable. Tee boxes, generally good - tight cut, mostly lush and level. Sand traps are in excellent shape - good texture, free of debris, well raked and maintained. Overall this course is certainly in GREAT shape now.

Things look like they are only improving at the course and I would not be surprised if we schedule another GK outing a Malibu CC in 2008.

BTW – pace of play was tremendous. Played in under 4 hours teeing off at just before noon.

Hello Greenskeeper members. It’s Dan Meherin again from the Malibu Country Club. I am pleased and extremely fortunate to inform you that the golf course was not affected by the treacherous fires that swept through the canyons of Malibu this past week. Our hearts go out to the homeowners and local businesses that did not fare quite as well. Nevertheless, the course is in fantastic shape. While this is traditionally the time of year when courses are over-seeding fairways and aerating greens, the Malibu Country Club is experiencing near perfect playing conditions. All of the roads surrounding the course are now open. We are accessible via the 101 Freeway or Pacific Coast Highway. Please keep us in mind when you are booking your next round of golf. You will not be disappointed. I look forward to seeing you at the club!

Played Malibu on the morning of 9/9/07. Having read some of the previous comments I was expecting bad things from the fairways and good things from the greens.
This was probably my 10th or 12th visit over th course of the last year and it was looking as good as it ever has in that time. Greens were quick and true with few spike marks (although the usual number of pitch marks for a public course).
Fairways were good too, especially considering the low rainfall. Maybe there were some bare patches that I just missed but did not see many.
Work on tee boxes was quite evident and, although the new ones were closed, they looked very good.
Only fly in the ointment was a slow fourball in front of us (we were three) who clearly never even considered letting us play through. They passed a marshall who could see they were two holes down on the group in front of them but he seemed more interested in finding lost balls over the fence.

I say "Mali", you say, "bu"! Played Friday, 9/7/07 as part of the GK informal golf outing. Outstanding course, great scenery and wonderful customer service. Soft, receptive and fast greens. Looks like they were sanded recently, but really had little effect on putts. Fairway grass was soft and smooth. Tee boxes had covered benches. Really nice carts with GPS. Thanks to Johnny and Dan (MCC) for the great outing.

Malibu CC is worth the while. Outstanding customer service, very challenging layout, and the surroundings can't be beat. At 6100yds. it is no gimme by any means. The greens were tricky but awsome. You have to play it a couple times to get a feel for the greens or where to place your ball, but it is a course that everyone will love. Also considering the the water restrictions they have these guys do a hell of a job. And last but not least Johnny, BigDog, and everyone else who attended thanks awesome

Truly enjoyed the round at MCC – and a hearty THANK YOU to the GK staff the organized the event. Beyond anything, golfing with a fun group eclipses any course condition along with my crummy play.
I think MCC is a special track. The surroundings/scenery is not something you’ll be able to find in many places – the course winds through a mountain wilderness park – really spectacular.
The course is in good shape esp considering how hot and dry it has been in the area the past 60 days. Fairways give good lies, and the greens were very challenging [fast]. If the pins were tucked on more holes, the course could play much much harder. Also – few truly flat holes – you’re in the Santa Monica Mtns – club selections hitting up and down to targets makes Malibu a challenging and unique course. I’ll find a way to get back out there.

Many thanks to the staff of Malibu CC. Your hospitality, service, course conditions are above par in my book. Thanks also to all who attened to make this a great 2nd Golf Gathering for Greenskeeper.org. We had a five full groups today and to be honest I was expecting a burned out course because of the water rationing in the area. What I found was a pleasent suprise. Greens ran very true. They are tricky you just have to know what to look for. Folks actually do fix divots here which for me is a nice change of pace. The GPS system is perhaps one of the best I have seen; offering not only distance to the hole but also front and back of the green yardage similar to what you see from SkyCaddy as well as a nice representation of the course and where you're on in the layout. They use it to send messages to slower players as we tested their system. It actually tells you to speed play LOL. Very well run course. No complaints only kudos. As I said, the greens ran very well. Slow for uphill super fast for downhill which seems to be the case throughout the course. Pay heed to the advice for the course.... always stay below the hole for aggressive puts uphill. You will thank me later. Fairways although not lush were in pretty good shape. It's green and well maintained. Some brown but hey we were warned beforehand and to be honest I appreciate the fact they said it up front. It really wasn't as bad as I originally envisioned. Bunkers are hard packed but appears they have stocked a few with good sand lately. Tee boxes are very flat. They even have shade unlike courses like Westridge where you have to seek shelter under your cart. Course plays short but accuracy is key since there are more than its fair share of OB and trouble. Photos forthcoming. One comment though. Place a sign at the fork in the road of Encimal Cyn Road telling the motorist to take the lower road and not the high road. Got lost and almost .... well I pretty much screwed the pooch here -- got lost. Thanks again Mailibu CC. You have a return golfer in my book.

I had occasion to play MCC again as part of a group since my last review. Here's an update:

There seems to be a bit of improvement. In the worst areas of the fairways, they have transplanted sod from tee boxes and marked it as ground under repair. It seems to be a fairly extensive effort. This is certainly welcome as it does solve some of the issues with the dirt in the fairways while at the same time offering a clear ruling for playing into those areas (I'm not a big fan of randomly making up when I get to take a drop). The fairways are still in pretty tough shape overall, but are hopefully on the rebound. They are still far worse than I have ever seen them at MCC and are surprisingly worse than any other course in the area.

The greens are indeed fantastic (with the exception of parts of #6). Smooth, true and fair. Staff is top notch, and the cart girl...

I greatly appreciate GM Dan Meherin's comments re: conditions. What they are trying to do makes total sense. But I still stand by my previous comments. It would be really nice if golfers were informed of the 'under construction' status when booking tee times, and/or were given a discount for the current conditions. When Ojai got rebuilt, they said as much and had a huge discount. Golfers knew what to expect. Of course, their greens fees skyrocketed when they were done. I hope that's not the case here.

MCC is still a great, tough track. The better I get, the more I enjoy it. Just not so much right now.

the facility is great , just like they say a public course that is like a country club. The customer service is top notch and they work hard to keep it that way. They dont overbook and the pace of play is good, there are some areas where they are working on the grass on the fairways so if you end up there you just need play it like a course hazard and move your ball , no big deal. As far as the fairways being narrow you just have to hit your tee shots a bit straighter. This is a high end golf course with classy people running it. I look forward to playing it again.

Malibu - Malibu
My name is Dan Meherin. I am the General Manager of the Malibu Country Club. I am taking this opportunity to inform Greenskeeper.org members about the ongoing improvements to the playing conditions at our club.

We are taking a proactive approach with respect to our fairways due to the historic drought conditions we are facing this year. They currently consist of multiple types of grass (mostly Poa, Rye and Kikuyu). This is known as a poly stand. Traditionally, poly stands require far more water, fertilizer and pesticides. In an attempt to create a more uniform playing surface, we are trying to eradicate the Poa and Rye grasses leaving us with predominantly Kikuyu fairways. Thus, our turf will become mono stand. It will require 30 to 40% less water and much less fertilizer and pesticides.

What does this mean to you? We are attempting to provide a superior playing surface that will remain in excellent condition regardless of any water restrictions that may be placed on golf courses during drought conditions. At the same time, we take pride in the fact that we are operating an environmentally friendly maintenance program. I believe that the present condition of the course is quite good. Over the past year, we have successfully implemented a similar program with our greens. They used to be a thatchy poly stand of Bent and Poa. They are now over 90% Bent grass as we have successfully removed the vast majority of the Poa. This has enabled us to create unbelievable putting surfaces that are fast, firm and receptive. They also roll amazingly true. The greens are arguably in the best shape they have been in past 20 years! It will not be long before we are saying the same thing about our fairways as the Kikuyu grass is quickly enabling us to have a truly uniform and thatch-free playing surface.

It is our goal to provide each of our guests with a positive and memorable experience every time they visit the club. We would love for those who haven’t had the opportunity to visit the club to give us a shot. You will not be disappointed. In fact, I believe that you will become one of our biggest fans.

I do appreciate all the feedback that this reputable site allows its members to share. I have obviously not rated the course in conjunction with this post as this would jeopardize the credibility of our rating. Nevertheless, I do expect the rating to continue to rise and I look forward to seeing and meeting all those who choose to visit the club in the near future.

TDW - Oak Park
I had a chance to play at Malibu last weekend and feel that some of the reviews on this site may not be giving the course a fair shake. I do agree with some reviewers that the conditions of the fairways were not ideal. Probably due to the freezing spell we had a few months ago (snow in Malibu!) combined with our historic drought conditions thus far this year. That being said, they weren't as poor as some have described. The impact seemed to be more visual than anything, as I can't remember an instance where it actually affected my lie and/or shot into the greens.

Speaking of greens, I thought they were in great shape and remain as challenging as ever. If I had a nickel for every one of my three putts at Malibu, I'd be a member at Sherwood instead. The ball still rolls true (i.e. towards the fairways) and they play quick but not excessively fast.

My experience at the course was, and has usually always been, entirely positive. Friendly staff, great views, challenging layout and a good pace of play. I would highly recommend a round at this course for those that are tired of playing the LA/Ventura munis and want a better experience at an affordable price (including cart).

Put simply: Do not play here for a while. I have never seen fairways this bad on any course at any price. Except for #1 near the clubhouse, the view down the vast majority of fairways from the tees looks like a green and brown leopard skin. The brown is dirt. The fairways are terrible. They are mostly equal amounts of grass clumps and bare dirt as if they don't get water. Many times, it was more difficult to play a shot off the 'fairway' than from the rough. Absolutely horrendous conditioning on the fairways. Add to that the maintenance workers that don't stop watering greens as you are hitting into them, and it's not a pretty sight. That being said, the greens were in amazing shape: really fast and smooth, but receptive and fair. The Marshals seem to have lightened up some also. I can understand if they are on some kind of water rationing (I don't know if they are or not), but to charge full price for the current conditions is reprehensible. Shame. It's about a $40 course right now. With cart.

I played Malibu last week with Jackmack65 and I'd say the course is more like an 8.0. I thought the greens were almost perfect. It's very rare to find a fast, smooth, and "sticky" surface to play on but that's exactly what you get. The fairways as Jackmack65 noted are not green but by no means are they thin. Sure you'll get a tight lie but there is plenty of padding underneath the ball to insure a crisp shot when struck decent...and man the kind of spin you'll generate with your short irons combined with soft greens makes for some fun approach shots.

What "I" like best about Malibu CC is the ambiance of the place. It's completely secluded and tucked into the canyon hills. There is nothing but nature/golf around you and best of all, the only noise you're going hear is your occasional fellow golfer. I spoke with the management of the course prior and after the round and these people are totally committed to enhancing the playing conditions of the course. Come Spring, the place should be in amazing shape. Worth noting, and Northern/Central California golfers especially will realize the significance of this, Malibu CC is now under the watchful care of Greenway Golf meaning the same people that maintain Stevenson Ranch (one the best conditioned courses around) are now taking care of Malibu CC. That's some high standards to live up to.

Hey Jackmack65, enjoyed the round. Thank you! Keep crushing those drives and making all those 8 footers!

The only thing that people still wants to play in this golf course because GPS system otherwise didn't worth the time and money. The fairways were too narrow and not for average player, the tee-boxes were descent, fairways grass were tough, not well maintained, loves the green fast and smooth...I might say too fast. I won't play this course, doesn't worth the money, if there's no gps this course only worth $37 weekend, $28 weekdays....include GPS worth $60...judge yourself...

Played this morning with JohnnyGK - thanks for the round! - and had a great time. I think the course is in better than fair condition considering the time of year; in fact, I'd call it very good. The greens are in outstanding shape, holding shots well and rolling pretty fast and beautifully true. There's some divot damage in a few fairways (notably #8) but beyond that I think you'll find great winter conditions, with very few bare spots. There's some dormant grass in the mix that makes for a more yellowish-green color than you might see on television, but you'll get good lies, cool days, and small crowds and that's always a great thing. Come springtime, I expect Malibu to be in its best shape in years. Thanks again to JohnnyGK for the round - it was a pleasure to meet you and I wish you the best!

Played 12/21/06. 9am start, 1pm finish with short waits on back 9. Course in fair condition (front better than back). Some bare patches in fairways (tight lies inside 100 always give me fits!). Greens lightning fast even on a cold day where we were almost frostsweepers! DO NOT GET ABOVE THESE HOLES!! I over clubed three times leading to three "others"! Besides this, the course was one of the best I have played in a while! Can't believe this course is so close and so relatively untouched! I'm goin' back!

The USGA needs to investigate Malibu CC!!!!
They have illegal fairways - not wide enough - seriously.
That one par 5 (hole # 6, I believe - with the ladder so you can maybe see the landing area) is less than 10 feet wide I'd say.

Course was in as good a shape as I've seen it. Looks like they are making an attempt to getting it in better shape. Greenside bunker on #6 had very little sand at the bottom of the bunker, making it practically impossible to get it close. Greens were VERY firm, and running very fast. All in all, not a bad layout. Paid $55 on the weekend due to being a member of La Purisima. Would think twice about paying the full price of $85.

Played Sunday 10/15. The greens are recovering from large-holes aeration and sanding and need probably another week to two weeks before they'll be running at their best again. Lots of work continues on the course and a lot of it is really starting to show. It looks like they've de-thatched most of the fairways, for example, and upgraded the general level of grooming around the course, which is nice. Although conditions really aren't perfect right now (the fairways look like they were "verticut," which I think is the result of the dethatching work), the course is in good shape and should be sensational come next spring. Certainly, it'll be quite playable and improving throughout the fall and winter. Give the greens another few days to heal and they should be particularly good - even for recently-aerated surfaces they ran super-true.

I haven't played Malibu in a while, had a chance to play this past weekend, and was very pleasantly surprised by the work they've done on the course. It looks like they been working on the greens and fairways, and they were in much better condition than I remember. The staff was more attentive than I remember as well, they loaded up our bags, gave us several bottles of water (going both in and out), and even got us out 20 min earlier than our scheduled time. We got around in about 4:15. Overall, a very good experience. I do miss the cups that used to "ping" when you sank a putt, though.

Played Saturday 9/10. While there has apparently been a change in management, it appears that no drastic changes have been made. They are de-thatching the fairways, so there are some cross-cuts to contend with. The metal plates in the cups are gone, so there's no bing 'clang' when you finally get one in. That was unique and I'm sad to see it gone. One thing that doesn't seem to have changed is the perpetual lack of any attempt at customer service. While we didn't have the usually over-aggressive marshals shadowing us this time, we were a little surprised to find out that there is no beverage cart service and no water coolers anywhere on the course. They asked us to tee off early and seemed upset that we wanted to go to the snack window to buy water, knowing full well that there was none available on the course. I don't understand how Malibu CC manages to attract and hire the grumpiest people in golf.

Enjoyed a relatively speedy Sunday morning round at Malibu this morning. Lots of subtle work going on at "the boo" these days - they've been de-thatching the fairways, which provides a bit more roll, and removing some of the signage, ropes, and a few other things here and there. The greens are in really good shape although there are some inconsistencies in speed, it seems. Tee boxes appeared in particularly good shape this morning. The rough is trimmed down nicely which is good for pace of play given how tough it can be to escape it even at just an inch-and-a-half or so. Malibu's in good shape these days.

Played in the PM on 7/5. Although I find this course to normally be a real challenge and joy to play, it wasn't this day. In general the course was in good shape considering the recent heat we've had but the greens were heavily sanded and most had a lot of unrepaired/poorly repaired ball marks so putting was really impacted. Had I known about the sanded greens I wouldn't have driven out there. Will I go back, sure but I'll try to get better intelligence on the condition first.

I do not no what they are doing at this course but the greens and the rest of the course are unreal. there should be more courses of this quality in southern Cal.

Malibu has new ownership and a new greenskeeper. You might notice a few changes - the metal inserts are gone from the bottoms of the cups, so say farewell to the "Malibu Clank," as now all the cups are standard plastic. The plastic collars that separated the fringes from the closely-mown areas around the greens are also gone, which is great news - those things were a pain in the tail. The course looks really good and is playing nicely. A recent small-holes or water-injection aeration has the greens running slower than normal at the moment though they'll be back to speed soon I'm sure. A few staff changes have been made but not too many. Apparently, other changes are on the way too. The new greenskeeper has a lot of buzz going up there, so look for good conditions in the canyon. As always, this is an enjoyable, sporty layout with plenty of test.

A pretty canyon course in the hills (not beach Malibu!). Tight tee shots with some blind shots. Good risk/reward holes. Accurate hitting is a must! The course isn't long but demands careful strategic play. It can get windy in the afternoons.

never playing here before the enitial thought was neat, a straight forward cours. As we continued on it be came apperant that blind tee shots and tough pin placements would make for an interesting day. Shorter than other courses in the area, made it refreshing and interesting to use those clubs seldom used. good distance judgement came into play a lot due to uphill or downhill greens. Was it going to be one club or two clubs more questions that made this round interesting and difficult for me to score well. Greens that if the approach shot was not in the right spot you would be looking at three puts all day.

I played a week ago last Saturday and the course was in good condition. The greens had slightly inconsistent speeds. The pace of play was excellent. The wind didn't pick up as I expected, because I've been told that wind can be a factor on that course.

Greens are very soft, but rolling really nicely. Fairways are in good shape, a little thatchy in some places but overall excellent. Rough is in typical Malibu condition which is to say that it doesn't look like it'll cause you all that much trouble until you're actually in it. I always feel like I'm going to light this course up... and reality has a funny way of creeping into my rounds here!

Course is in good shape although the fairways were a little spongy. Haven't played there since they added GPS to the carts. Nice system but mounting it out of the line of site would have been better. Will definitely play there again.

Played a very speedy Saturday AM round at Malibu on 6/11 after a couple months away. The course is super lush right now - the rough, especially when it's still damp from overnight, is really thick and tough. Greens were a bit slower than I recall but in excellent shape, very smooth and well-manicured. The aftermath of our incredibly wet winter, at least for Malibu, is a vibrantly green course that plays longer than you might think because there's just no roll at all. Always a fun and sporty, challenging course.

Great course, only problem is the fairways start at about 130 yrds so my wife was always hitting 2nd shot from the thick rough.

Once the crown jewel of courses out this way, Malibu appears to be fading. The course is still an interesting layout, but overall it appears shabbier and shabbier each time I go there. The fairways are spotty and not uniform, the greens vary in texture from one to the next then back again. I must admit that today for the first time in the last couple of trips we did not have a marshall cracking a whip to keep everyone packed together, which was nice. There was no beverage cart service. It's still a beautiful course with the surrounding mountains, but for the same price as Angeles National and more than twice the price of Rustic Canyon and others in the area and especially since there is no range or chipping area for warm up I'd have to say that it just isn't worth the $85 weekend rate. Maybe it's time to think about a major overhaul or a big price drop...

Played Sunday, 2/27. It's really wet out there (surprise!) and the waterfall visible from the third tee is roaring. Generally speaking, the course has held up extremely well. Obviously it's cart path only right now. The grounds crew has cut a few drainage channels across a couple fairways to help evacuate some of the water flowing out of the hills but these areas of ground under repair don't really come too much into play (in other words, they picked good spots for them). Greens are in excellent shape, and the rough is thick, high, and rather penal. Fairways, apart from being sodden, are lush and ultra green especially for a February. Enjoy Malibu - it's going to be a great spring in the canyon.

I didn't see any fairways being "renovated," but there is a lot of brown out there because some of the grass is going dormant for winter. They're more lush than they appear, and the greens remain in very nice shape in my view. I don't believe that Malibu overseeds, which means the course will be a little brown through the winter but it should continue to play quite nicely.

Greens a bit slow due to recent rains, but the roll is great, and so is the rest of the course. Fairways are pretty close to immaculate, the rough is up in some places and can make things tough. Tee boxes are a little spongy at a few holes but by and large the whole course continues to be in outstanding condition.

PLAYED 9/15/04 IN 3HRS 40 MINUTES. THAT WAS THE ONLY BRIGHT SPOT. THE ONLY REASON PEOPLE PLAY THIS PLACE IS BECAUSE IT IS CALLED MALIBU COUNTRY CLUB. IT SHOULD NOT BEAR THE NAME COUNTRY CLUB. THE TEE BOXES FELT LIKE I WAS STANDING ON A WATER BED. THE GREENS WERE VERY SLOW. THIS PLACE SHOULD BE CALLED MALIBU MUNICIPAL GOLF COURSE BECAUSE OF THE CONDITIONS OF THE GOLF COURSE. I THINK THE REASON I PLAYED IN 3:40 WITH A 4-SOME WAS BECAUSE NOONE WAS OUT THERE. I GOT SUCKERED INTO IT BECAUSE GREENSKEEPER.ORG RATED IT IN THE TOP 25. I NEED TO KNOCK IT DOWN TO REALITY.

THIS GOLF COURSE IS A JOKE. THEY NEED TO STOP WATERING THE GREENS AND TEE BOXES AND WATER THE FAIRWAYS. I FELT LIKE I WAS SINKING INTO THE GROUND ON THE TEE BOXES. THIS COURSE PLAYED LIKE A MUNI. NO WONDER IT NEVER BECAME A PRIVATE COUNTRY CLUB BECAUSE IT IS NOT THAT GOOD. SHOULD NOT BE RATED IN THE TOP 25.

Played Malibu Country Club Sunday Sept. 5th. Nice weather, fairly decent condition. plays short from the White's, but makes the day a fun round of golf. Some nice breezes at times but that was welcomed from the extreme heat. Malibu CC is a course to be played periodically. Make sure you don't go in to the woods though, there is Poison Ivy and Rattle Snakes present...

Malibu is in fantastic condition right now. I've never seen the fairways nicer, and the greens are soft, smooth, and running a nice medium-fast. The rough is lush and mostly trimmed down to a manageable height, and as usual, play clips along at a pretty decent pace. It's going to be a great fall out there, and the more I play this course the more I like it - it's always a good challenge but it's also always entirely playable.

The course is well maintained, challenging, has a stunning back drop of rolling mountains and has the feel of an exclusive private club. I played during the week and was pleasantly surprised at how few golfers were out on the course. On the whole its well worth the trip out there and the greens fees are fairly reasonable too.

Played twilight on 7/28. Course is in great shape and backdrops are just beautiful as there are no houses on sight around the course. The course setting is more like a private course with well maintained fairways and greens. The tee-boxes need little more trimming, as they felt like standing on a mattress. Overall, great course with a great value.

Excellent high-summer conditions at Malibu. Greens are just beautiful right now, fairways are lush though getting a little bit dry in a few places. Rough is lush but not too high, and as usual, the pace of play on a Sunday morning is hard to beat here as compared to any other public track.

Malibu is in great shape right now. A few greens are still recovering from the recent aeration, and today most were just a little bit slower than usual (could be that they're watering a lot in the mornings because of the heat?), but they're rolling just beautifully. The fairways are lush and vibrant, and the rough is thick and lush throughout. Within about a week, all the greens should be fully healed and the course should continue through the summer in fine form.

Played on a Friday afternoon at 12.00pm and finished at 4.00pm for a threesome, very good pace of play. The golf course is in decent shape. The tee boxes are the worst part of the golf course because they were not level and a little too lush and sandy. The fairways, rough and greens are in nice conditions. This golf course though short, is very challenging because OBs and hazards come into play on most holes and driving the golf ball well is a premium because fairways are narrow. An overall enjoyable golf course set among the Santa Monica mountains.

Malibu is greening up nicely as the days get longer and warmer. Course is in generally excellent shape - greens smooth, medium-fast, and mainly quite receptive to good shots. Fairways are lush, rough is up a little and offers a challenge. If you have allergies, bring your meds. Brush is blooming everywhere and there's lots of pollen in the air.

Malibu is playing really nicely right now. Greens are excellent, a little firm but rolling very smooth and medium-fast. Fairways don't look great thanks to a fair amount of dormant grass, but they're playing much, much nicer than they look. Tee boxes are rather battered in some places, and are perfect in others. Overall, the course is in very good to excellent condition for the winter. If you're into birds, watch for a Cooper's Hawk that sometimes hangs out in the trees on the left of #10. Also, there are Ruddy Ducks and Bufflehead in some of the ponds, if you can see between all the coots.

One of the toughest course I played. Most of holes both sides OB lines & hazard lines. Greens very quick(MOUNTAIN BREAKS),Fairways thin & dry(not lush),nice view. I realized that pace of play depends on the groups ahead of you.Originally three somes(2women & 1 man)joined 1 guy in front group.Problem is this guy played I guess about 50-65 with OB ,penalty & errant shots. What a poor man shared cart with this guy if I had to play w/him,I'LL DIE. Malibu continues to be in excellent shape. I really don't get the comment someone made about fairways being brown and crappy; I think maybe we're a little spoiled by watching golf on television. Anyway, the fairways at Malibu are currently a beautiful, lush green, with the occasional dry patch such as you might find on any well-maintained course. They're doing some work on the irrigation system right now so a couple of fairways (I think 13 & 14) have some additional ground under repair. Greens are getting nice and quick and they're rolling very smooth right now. Should be a great fall in the canyon.

Twilight starts at 4:00 (which is a bit later than most courses) but was still able to complete 17.5 holes in reasonable light. I never seem to play well at "the boo" but I find it to be an interesting track in a beautiful setting. What was not beautiful however was that the brown cragginess of the surrounding mountains was matched perfectly by the condition of many (if not most) of the fairways. Maybe it has been a tough summer in Encinal Canyon, but it seems somone fell asleep at the watering switch. Large sections were burned out, haylike and rock hard. OK if it is Royal St. Anne's, but I don't think this is the look they are going for. At $52 for twilight I would still probably go back, but be warned that the fairways are not up to the standard of other higher end daily fee courses. In fact, Hansen Dam is in as good or better condition in my opinion. They should turn the water on and save what is really an interesting and fun 18.

Played in the fog early this morning. Course is as nice as I've seen it. Greens are rolling awesome, fairways look good, rough is lush and fair. This is truly playing like an $80 course now. After nearly losing several greens to fungus damage, the grounds crew has done an awesome job bringing them back and they're near-perfect now.

I played this course over the weekend, and boy was it wonderful! The course is really tight and narrow, and lines with fences to mark out of bounds. I played nine holes in about 2 hours...pretty quick for such a large course (6300 yards). The ninth hole can be pretty tricky with the wind in your face. I teed off with a 3-iron and left myself about 135 yards to the pin. I thought it was better then risking hitting a long ball with my driver and putting it in the water. If you have the time and money, I really suggest playing this course. Aside from the course being beautiful, the area is great too...nesteled deep in Kanan Road and Mulholland Drive.

It seems most reviews are very critical of Malibu. I played on June 24 and expected a trashed course based on what I read. To the contrary. The course has seen better days but it was in fine shape. The tee boxes, fairways and greens were excellent. There were many workers on the course working toward improving the track. Seems they're doing their best to improve the conditions. Meanwhile, it played very nicely.

I've never experienced poor service at Malibu, and I've played there quite a bit recently. The course is enjoyable and the greens are generally excellent -- quick, firm, and challenging. Some holes are pretty mickey-mouse, especially #9, but by and large it's a solid course that's kept in quite good shape. It looks like they've just started aerating greens, but by mid May this course should be playing very nice, and they are beginning some major changes to 15, 16, & 17 that will significantly alter the way the course finishes. I think it's well worth playing and I've enjoyed the course quite a bit.

I have played all courses in Southern Cal between the Arroyo Seco 3-par to Los Angeles Country Club and for the price Malibu CC may be the worst course of all. My threesome paid $82 each at 1pm on a Sat and the starter made us wait AFTER each of our first tee shots to wait for a single that they had found. I didn't hit my second shot until 30 minutes after the tee shot.
As for the course itself, the conditions of the fairways were about the same as Balboa would typically be while the greens were over dried on some parts. The layout was poor as I found myself having too many 8, 9 or wedges into the greens on approach shots after hitting average drives. Many of the par 5s were also too reachable. Basically, for the money and the drive, I would hope that the course would be at least a bit more challenging then Santa Anita.
Also, the course is nowhere close to being in Malibu...it should be renamed Agourra CC. For the people who plan to play this course, save your money or time and play Moorpark, Tierra, Lost Canyons or Rustic which are reasonably close by...

Show up as a single a few weeks back. The reason I choose to play the course is because it’s near by and pretty wide open on the weekdays. So I get there and no ones around as expected. Happy, figuring I’ll be put right out, I head up to the starter. NO DICE! The starter tells me I can’t play as a single and I’ll have to wait for someone else to show up to play with. So I wait around 20 minutes – 20 minutes just staring at the empty first tee. So finally another single does shows up. Turns out he’s a chain smoker! I tell the guys in the golf shop I can’t share a cart with a chain smoker and if it would be possible for us to take separate carts. NO DICE! – now remember no one is around and the course is wide open. At this point I had it. TERRIBLE SERVICE – A high-end golf course should cater to their clients needs, not impose ridiculous restrictions. I’ve been recently playing Moorpark CC, early in the morning, as a single, in my own cart, and loving every minute of it. Message to Malibu – WAKE UP and get with the program.

I agree with seeing better days at Malibu. The fairways were not a lush as they were last month. Good course to play, but with Moorpark C.C. and Rustic Cyn. there is some good competition. I will come back to Malibu, but only after I play these other two courses a few times.
