Played on 8/24/10. Rates have gone up but all city courses have a summer discount. 5 dollars off the round between 11am - closing. Paid $28 to walk 18holes. I remember when this course cost 21.50 ... Continue »

I really like playing this course. If you do as well, get ready for the rate increases. It’s really slick what the city is doing. It’s designating Rancho Park and Wilson “premium” courses (and I can’t... Continue »

Plays from an elevated tee down to a small green guarded by several bunkers. You will rarely see anybody long on this hole, or even on the green, the vast majority of tee shots are short by 10-20 yards. I've heard a number of explanations for this which don't make a lot of sense ("the air is heavy here") but I would recommend you use a club you can easily carry the full distance to the pin with. Shots pulled left will be dead in the trees or even OB if they carry the fence. There is a small shallow bunker behind the green you may not be able to see from the tee to catch shots that are long, and this is not an easy up and down. The bunker left of the hole is more forgiving. The first of the two bunkers right of the green tends to get a lot of business and I've seen many people bunny hop from the first to the second on their way to the green. Shots landing on the far right side of the green tend to funnel left towards the center. Shots long and right that clear the second bunker typically end up in a small collection area with medium rough that is not a bad place to miss. It is usually a straight forward chip and putt (or two) from here.

Tee shots missing right of the fairway go into a stand of trees on steep down sloping hill with a dense mat of dead leaves on the ground. Many of these balls are lost so you may want to hit a provisional. Conversely, drives pulled left tend to funnel back onto the fairway (unless you clear the fence left in which case they're OB). A good drive will catch or fly the hill and roll down into a depressed area in front of the green. You'll have a wedge in to an elevated green that's fairly wide from left to right and narrower in depth. Again, you'll need to carry the distance to the pin, the steep hill in front of the green will catch anything short of the green. However, if you fly the green and end up on the steep upsloping hill behind the green, you will have a difficult downhill pitch to a green that slopes away from you making it hard to stop the ball near the hole. So pick your club carefully on your second. Even though the second shot is uphill and frequently into the wind, I tend to go down a half club (ie hit a 52o wedge or 56o wedge) and hit it a little harder to minimize the chance of flying the green and maximize the chance of putting or chipping uphill to the hole. This green tends to be softer and moister than the others (due to the shade from the surrounding trees in the afternoon and the hill behind it draining down) so the back to front slope can make the ball spin back a fair way. Of course, this is also from hitting down harder with a wedge.
