Finally got to play the golf course members voted the best value in LA County for 2003. At $40 with a cart and $24 for seniors, Rancho Vista is indeed a lot of golf course for the money. The layout was fun and interesting but since the course is still young and the trees have not “really” come into play yet, the holes play very similarly. Being the trees were not much of a factor, big hitters should certainly benefit on the scorecard as long as they bring their iron game. It will be your iron game that is tested the most due to many uneven lies and awkward footing. Fortunately the greens are pretty big and not overly undulating so once you’re on the dance floor you’ll have plenty of opportunities to score. As for the playing conditions…

Greens (Rating:8) - Smooth, Medium to Fast, Firm.

Fairways (Rating:9) – Lush with little divot damage. It’s relatively the same turf as Rustic Canyon (Rye) so there is no dormancy this time of year. The ball sits up beautifully making it easy to hit any club.

Rough (Rating:7) – Lush at times thin. It appeared rather inconsistent. For the most part it was not very penalizing when I missed the fairway but around the greens it showed its teeth.

Sand Traps (Rating:7) – Mostly good quality sand and well kept. Some of the waste bunkers were pretty hard packed but then again they are waste bunkers so it’s to be expected.

Tee Boxes (Rating:9) – Lush, well groomed, with little divot damage but a bit uneven at times.

Overall - I think this is a fantastic golf course for the average to beginning golfers. I think the better players will enjoy it too but may not be challenged enough due to the forgivingness of the layout. One thing is for certain; all golfers will enjoy how well it is maintained and the reasonable green fees. If you live in the San Fernando Valley, I recommend the drive up to Palmdale to give this track a try.
