Nice to return to Rio Hondo. Have always enjoyed this course. Conditions were about what I expected after having read the last review, although the greens were better than expected. Some bare areas in the fairways, but generally good coverage. Did not find any bunkers, but they appeared OK. Staff was as usual friendly and accommodating . A really beautiful to morning to play golf on a fun track. Recommend this course.

Ventured out to Rio Hondo yesterday. They punched on 4/4, but the greens recovered quickly and nicely. Very little signs of the left over sand and they ran around 8/9. The tees boxes were punched recently so tee boxes were not level. Fairways were in good shape and rough was minimal. POP was 5 hour for a WED. Cart gals seem like a new addition to operations except they were too busy driving around and never even stopped and asked us if we needed anything. Snack shop is convenient and well priced. The 19th hole has now an expanded menu and they fixed their a/c finally. If you drink hard liquor, make a double for better value and fun! Customer service was fine, some of the carts seem dated and slow. Will return because price is right and Montebello is closed now.

Played an afternoon round at Rio Hondo and enjoyed getting back on this fun course for the first time in around a year. The greens had been punched around nine days ago so I was hoping they would be a little more healed up, but they definitely still have about two more weeks until the punches are gone and the sand is no longer required.

Even with that though, they were running pretty good - good enough to make three one-putt birdies. Held shots well and there's nothing too tricky or quirky about the green complexes at Rio Hondo. The fairways were in good not great shape, with lots of good lies but a fair share of thin ones as well. Rough is a nice length, the bunkers were mostly in very good, fluffy shape, and the tee boxes are all pretty well maintained.

POP was definitely an issue with a pretty slow group in front of us (or just the general pile-up of players all over - never worse than the back-to-back par 3s on holes 7 and 8), but made even worse when some youngsters mostly fooling around let the group ahead of us pass on the 11th hole and we were stuck behind them the rest of the round. That was not ideal. Ended up being around a five hour round so that could definitely be better.

I always enjoy playing Rio Hondo though and expect it to be in much better shape quite soon, but I don't know if they're going to get the POP situation better in that time. Let's hope so.

Played yesterday 7:30am tee time. I agree with the last review. Rio Hondo is usually in slightly better conditions you would expect at a typical muni but right now overall conditions are slightly worse. I recently played Lakewood, Navy Destroyer and El Dorado, all in better shape than this course.
Tee boxes were really bad. Half dirt and half patchy grass.
Fairways were very thin, lots of bald patches.
Rough is like the Fairways but slightly worse.
Bunkers were the only nice part of the course.
Greens were a mixed bag. Some were fast, some were slow, some were nice, some had a lot of bare ground/dirt.
Pace of play. Stared at 730am and finish 12pm. 4 and half hours on a Friday. Seems kinda slow for a 730am tee time.

Played Rio Hondo on Wednesday, 11/30 for the first time in a few years. PoP was 4:10 with a starting tee time of 8:12.
Overall the conditions are not up to Rio Hondo standards. Seemed like everything was in winter conditions.
Tees: Pretty chewed up and firm.
Fairways: Very this and firm to hard. Hitting the ball first was a must as a slightly fat shot would bounce the club into the ball. There are many GUR in the fairways with only a painted circle around the area, no ropes, and you can tell that carts drive across these areas. So I don't think these areas will ever heal.
Rough: thin and patchy.
Bunkers: The only highlight on the course. Bunkers are filled with nice sand and most have been raked nicely. And each trap and plenty of rakes, which is very nice to not have to hunt for one.
Greens: Damage on every green. Some are worse than others, so it's a mixed bag. The greens were running medium fast. The 18th green is in the best shape with very little damage.
Overall I will wait to play Rio Hondo again till spring or early summer.

Out early on a very mild morning. Great time of year with it getting light so early. As the prior review reflects, course is in OK condition, not the best I've seen but very playable. The senior walking rate makes this course very attractive when you compare it to almost everywhere else. With prices so crazy, it's nice to not feel not gouged for a change.

Greens still need a couple weeks before their back to where they normally are, but not too bad. Most good coverage in the fairways, with some thin/bare areas, but generally decent. Enjoy playing this course as it offers a nice challenge without being overly penal. There are a couple holes which are a bit too tough for me now, but enough "easy" holes to offset them.

Staff as always is friendly and accommodating.

Friday twilight round at Rio Hondo with a buddy, walking from the blue tees and paired with another twosome. Greens still recovering from latest punch so there are still some hazards to navigate there but should be healed nicely within the next two or three weeks.

As for the rest of the course, it's in pretty good shape overall but definitely not at its absolute best as seen in years past. Most of the fairways have decent to good coverage and are fairly lush, but you'll also find some fairways that are quite thin and lots of GUR areas. The rough is not too penal and the bunkers were in good shape. Tee boxes a mixed bag but all level and mostly fine.

We had cart service come around once or twice which is great for a Friday afternoon. The rate was around $45 for a 1:20pm tee time so that seems plenty fine for me. This is always a fun course to play with a few very tough and narrow holes, but a lot of gettable ones as well once you're familiar with it. I think they take quite good care of this facility and, while it's not at its very best right now, it will be again soon enough I'm sure.

Played this course last week for the first time. In a word, it was "average," or "ok." Basically what you might expect for a muni shortly after Spring aeration. I was told it's a good value, but to me, unless I'm paying less than $30, it's not worth it to me to play at a course with mediocre-to-poor conditions. Just saw more bare spots than I like to see, and the greens were exceptionally bumpy, likely due to having been punched not too long ago. I don't want to give the place a bad rap, so take my comments with a grain of salt; but I won't be interested in playing here again until summer or fall, when conditions are hopefully better.
