Walked the Blacks (1239) using Forelinx. The weather was in the high 60's, clear & breezy. Played as a single in slightly more than an hour. Good place to practice my short irons. Tremendous views & very good course conditions make this a very fun par 3 course. Most holes have elevation changes and the prevailing ocean wind seems to always swirl here. No motorized carts but a nice walking cart is included as part of your fee. No GPS, but they do have range finders on the tees. The tees had good coverage and were lusher than my last visit here. Most divots had been properly repaired. The fairways and rough are both in very good shape. Rough really thick around the sand traps, other than the native areas, that is the only real punitive area to avoid. The traps were nicely maintained with very thick sand that was tough to play out of. Only negative is that they also have a decent amount of small rocks. The large greens putted medium fast and are mostly smooth. Firm but still receptive to well struck iron shots. Average amount of ball marks considering that shorter irons are being hit into green after green. The Customer Service from everyone encountered was excellent, especially the starter Alex. Very nice chipping and pitching green in addition to the large practice putting green that has been very reflective of the greens on the course. No driving range, they have nets for you to warm up in. The Clubhouse/Pro Shop is in a trailer but is well stocked and very functional. Conditions were definitely better than when I played here a month ago. Recommended = Yes.

Played a quick 9 holes on a perfect Thursday afternoon, 1/28/16. This is by far the best par 3 course in the area, and always rated one of the best in the country. Beautiful, if not a bit confusing, layout. Ocean view from every hole. A lot of work went into the bunkering on this layout, and if you miss the green from tee, can be very challenging. Tee boxes are a bit chewed up and given there isn't a lot of room to move the tees around, the teeing ground is a little tight, but in mostly good condition. No problem if you tee the ball or hit of the deck. Some elevation changes and ocean breezes to contend with so club selection is critical. Laser range finders included at each tee box, and a cooler of fruit on the 4th tee box. Nice touches. Can't speak much about the 'fairways' here, as you don't usually play from them, but they were lush and green, mostly untouched. Greens were smooth, firm and quick, but held good shots. A couple of fun green complexes allow you to play off a sideboard or backboard, depending on pin location. Backs tees on this day ranged from 105 to 175 yards, so you get a decent variety of iron shots. Easy to get distracted with the amazing views when as clear as it was on the day I played. A very fun and enjoyable round. $40 to play 9, with $25 replay. Pull cart was included. Very pleasant service when you check in with the starter and inside the shop. Must play if you are in So Cal. Spend the day, have lunch at the resort. Highly recommend for a casual golf day, but also provides very good short to mid iron and putting practice. (Nice practice chipping and putting area as well) Enjoy !

Walked the Blacks (1239) using Forelinx. The weather was 60ish, clear & breezy. Played as a single in 1H, 10M. The tees had good coverage but had many unrepaired divots on a course where most players are using irons on every hole. A couple tees were moved up, with the back area roped off and almost ready to be played on again. The fairways and rough are both in good shape. Rough really thick around the sand traps, other than the native areas, that is the only real punitive area to avoid. The traps were nicely maintained with very thick sand that was tough to play out of. The large greens unfortunately have many ball marks. They putted medium fast and are mostly smooth "but for" the ball marks. Firm but still receptive to well struck iron shots. A couple are moved up, with the back area roped off and almost ready to be played on again. There are many repaired divots, but on a course where most players are using irons on every hole, it's tough to keep them all maintained. The fairways and rough do not really come into play much since this is a par 3 course, but they were both winter thin with few divots. The tees were winter thin with many divots freshly repaired. However, there are so many divots on a course where most players are using irons on every hole, tough to keep them all maintained. The fairways and rough do not really come into play much since this is a par 3 course, but they were both winter thin with few divots. The traps were nicely maintained with very thick sand that was tough to play out of. 50/50 chance you will get a fried egg. You better hope you get IN the trap, because the deepest rough on the course surrounds most traps. The greens are mostly smooth, putted medium fast, firm but still receptive to well struck iron shots. The greens complexes are large for a course this length and not surprisingly for a shorter course, there were many ball marks on the greens. Tremendous views & excellent course conditions make this a very fun par 3 course. Fairly lush with many divots freshly repaired. However, there are so many divots on a course where most players are using irons on every hole, tough to keep them all maintained. The fairways and rough do not really come into play much since this is a par 3 course, but they were both very lush with a few areas uprooted by native animals. There are more traps that you would expect on a short, 9 hole par 3 course, which adds visual stimulation, difficulty & character to this layout. Additionally, these are not small traps either, most are huge. Nicely maintained with nice quality light colored sand. The greens are mostly smooth, putted medium fast, firm but still receptive to well struck iron shots. Very large for a course this length and not surprisingly for a shorter course, there are many ball marks on the greens. Not many straight putts on these greens either. The Clubhouse/Pro Shop is in a trailer but well stocked and very functional. The Customer Service from everyone encountered was excellent. This is a walk only course, they do not have powered carts. A nice walking cart is included as part of your green fee. POP was slow for this course, we were playing behind 3 beginners and waiting on every tee until they quit after 6 holes. The parts of the course that matter (greens, tees & traps) were good, but not as good as they were a few weeks ago when I played here. The tees were just Okay, fairly lush with most divots freshly repaired, but there sure are alot of them even for a par 3 course. The fairways and rough do not really come into play much since this is a par 3 course, but they were both very lush. There were areas torn up according to the starter by Raccoons that come out at night and dig things up. The sand traps were nicely maintained with nice quality sand. More traps that you would expect on a fairly short, 9 hole par 3 course. However, 1st thing in the morning, talk about THICK to try and hit out of! The greens are very large for a course this length. Mostly smooth, putted medium fast, firm but still receptive to well struck iron shots. Many more ball marks than I remember on my last visit here. Not many straight putts on these greens. The damage from a hydraulic leak on the 5th green has been repaired and is almost healed. Terranea has a very nice chipping and pitching green in addition to the large practice putting green that was very reflective of the greens on the course. Played 18 holes in 2H, 15m walking in the morning, so the POP was excellent. I used a different club on 3 of the 9 holes the 2nd time through because of the changing conditions. Most holes have elevation changes and the prevailing ocean wind make this course more challenging that the yardage would initially indicate. The holes range from 104 to 173 yards from the back tees. I used everything from a 6 iron to a Sand Wedge off the tee. The tees were generally good, fairly lush with most divots freshly repaired. Most holes have elevation changes and the prevailing ocean wind make this course more challenging that the yardage would initially indicate. The tees were very good, fairly lush with almost all divots freshly repaired. It's almost a shame the fairways and rough do not really come into play much since this is a par 3 course, because they were both very lush. The sand traps were very nicely maintained with nice quality sand. The greens were very good overall. Smooth, firm, putted medium fast and held approach shots on a dime. They also have a decent amount of slope, not many straight putts on these greens. No driving range, they have nets for you to warm up in. They do have a very nice chipping and pitching green in addition to the large practice putting green that was very reflective of the greens on the course. The Clubhouse/Pro Shop is in a trailer but well stocked and very functional. The Customer Service from Dan in the Pro Shop to the starter Alex was superb. Chatted with the Greens crew, who was out in force resodding & repairing damage from a hydraulic leak on the 5th green. With the views and condition of the course, this is definitely the best par 3 course I have ever played. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience, Recommended = Definitely.
