played yesterday and the course looks good. they are working on some of the tee boxes so some blue tees were way up, and some were way back. the fairways looked good, and the rough was tough! number 8 is a par 3 with some nasty stuff down in front, its just some rugged rough. the greens looked really good, they held shots and rolled true. only 1 bunker had some hard sand, number 12 par 5, the big greenside bunker. besides that all the other sand was perfect that i was in. the course looks good, i look forward to getting back out there again.

Dear Greenskeeper.org members: Highly rated Black Gold Golf Club, Orange County’s “Best In Class” destination for daily fee golf, is enjoying exceptional summer conditions. Our greens, tees, roughs and bunkers are all looking and playing above average. Our Rye grass fairways are in good shape and the remaining tee boxes that were not reconstructed a year ago have been leveled and regressed and with 328 Hybrid Bermuda (we will over seed them in the fall.) There are a few existing fairway and green surround areas where the overriding Poa Annua has deteriorated and the turf is dying out. In late September/early October 2008, Black Gold Golf Club will close for ten days to core drill aerify our fairways, sod several acres of summer stressed turf, top dress all turf, and “sweeten” the existing Rye grass by over seeding. This will result in superior conditions for the rest of this year and next year. We just wanted to keep you informed and appreciate your feedback and patronage. Black Gold Management.

Played in the a.m. on 8/7. Most holes had some very wet/muddy spots and some areas in the fairways marked ground under repair and some other spots that should have been designated as such. Many tee boxes are being re-sodded so it was a different experience than the last time I played here. It should be great once they are all done. The greens were fast and rolled true.

For the money, there are better tracks to play, but the layout at BG is fun and worth a few extra bucks every once in a while. I'd say $40-$50 would be a reasonable price, but would make it a lot busier than it was as we finished today's round in just under 4 hours at $67.

I hadn'd played here for 6 years due to pricing. Now that I am a senior I've played 10 times in last 3 months. They had some problems in the fairways and had to re-sod a bit. Course plays a bit easier from the white tees than the blue. In my case 5-8 strokes difference. The greens are firm but put true. They re-sod some of the tee boxes this week as those were chewed up some.

Here we go again... Black Gold is claiming "heat damage" even though we haven't had a single hot day this summer. The course was in descent condition, but they are re-doing all the tee boxes so some holes you teed off from the very forward tees and others from the tips. The fairways were wet!!! The biggest problem, as they have had in the past, they continue to charge full price when the course is not worth full price. Seriosuly guys... If the course is in crap condition and you are doing major renovation, then give us a break on the cost. There is no way they should charge $100. Head down the road to Anaheim Hills for a better price and experience.

The course has some rough spots in the fairways and they are resodding many of the tee boxes. (Always nice to see improvements) The course was in "OK" condition, not great but decent. I never play well here so I have to try to be objective about the course. Greens were nice, I just can't putt them! 5+ hours is too long to focus, maybe that's my excuse for the poor performance. I play here about once a year, so I'll wait until next year to extract my revenge.

Congratulations to all at black gold, you have officially taken a quality golf course and turned it into a local muni. This course is in terrible shape it is all most as bad as Fullerton golf course. the layout is far superior though. I am thinking the price should be officially changed to, um lets say $50. This is definitely the proper price for this course, maybe a little less if you consider past attitudes of the course supervisors. Now for the good news. The starters and the and the "bag boys" were excellent. they were all very nice and polite, big change for the course. The after tournament dinner was excellent, the last tournament i played in their the food was not good. Totally different this time cutos to the management. The only knock with the the dinner was the chef came out after dinner was served to see if everyone liked the food and his white coat was filthy. Probably should look more like he made the food as oppose to wearing it. Definitely good food though.

Loved the course. Read the reviews before I played and not sure what some people are thinking. Greens were better than most local country clubs, pace of play great and service...everyone had a smile. Noticed lots of maintenance guys working. Some were fixing ball marks and replacing divots. Yeah!!! Interesting track, my third time playing. Gets better each time. After round had some food with my group on the patio (great food) and watched many balls go in the 18th lake. Wish I were a fish.

Very challenging. If you are not in the fairway off the tee, you will not score well. The greens are somewhat difficult to read and very fast.

Good news, I get the Yorba Linda discount for $40 twilight, BAD News, this course is just horrible. Highly recommend playing this course for $40-$45, otherwise, not worth it.

Greens are just HORRIBLE. WOW! How hard is it to take care of greens? Go to any course close by to Black Gold, and you would understand my question.

Played 7/6. Greens are completely healed from aeration. But there are now tons of unrepaired ball marks. Doesn't take long for those to show up apparently. Otherwise, greens running good. Fairways are ok. If you play afternoon round, the last 3 holes are directly into the sun, making it a challenge to see your ball flight.

Course is in excellent shape right now. In addition, they have begun the 5 hour guarantee again, so pace of play is excellent (finished today in 4 hours flat with no waiting on any hole). If you do get some slow people, the marshals push them because you get half off your next round if it goes over 5 hours. Course is always a challenge with never a flat lie except off the tees. Not particularly long even from the tips but a great place to play. One of the best OC has to offer.

played here 6/26 at 6:30am. Course is in great condition EXCEPT for the greens being punched...I love it how they never mentioned that when I was reserving a time...i guess the $59/person was too good to be true. the teeboxes, rough, fairways, and sand traps are all in great condition right now.

What i would like to rant about is the very aggressive marshall. We're playing as a 4some and our gps shows we were 15 mins ahead of pace (we finished in a tad under 4 hours), however the marshall constantly kept asking us to keep up with the 2some in front of us....ummmm ok. when i mentioned that we were ahead of pace and that the 4some behind us wasn't even close to us, Joe (that's what his name tag said) said in a condescending tone, "sir, don't worry about the group behind you; that's my job, just play faster."

well i'm never coming back here, if i had to pay regular price it's def. not worth it. the course layout is similar to eagle glen, but eagle glen isn't as nice.

course is in pretty good shape...fairways, tee boxes, and bunkers are great...rough in a few areas is a bit thin, but otherwise, the repairs that they have done have been pretty good

the one complaint i have about this place is that the regulars dont fix their stupid ball marks (and fairway divots, to a lesser extent)...its pretty annoying, especially for a course of this price...i repaired at least two every hole, and there were plenty more to be found...its a shame, because otherwise, the speed and firmness of the greens are perfect...firm but not too firm, fast but not too fast

the course is in pretty good shape. the greens were much softer today than they were last time i played here. the fairways were pretty good and the rough was good. the pace of play was excellent as we didn't wait for even 1 shot.
the front nine played fairly easy compared to the back nine. the back nine is very narrow with little room for error. i was 1 over on the front and 8 over on the back, if that means anything. the blue tees were all back where the black tees should be and the pins were all in difficult locations. The course looks nice and plays well if you can keep it straight but it definitely kicked our butts today. look online for cheap rates (aka c4tt).

I played BG 17-May-08 (Sat) as a last resort for Sat time and expected what I got last time. Mediocre conditions, tight fairways. and the torture of slow play. I am VERY pleased to report that the course conditions are GREATLY improved. No real bare spots, very quick (too hard) greens, and quality sand traps. I was only in one, but it was perfect. Best of all was the pace of play. We only waited on a couple of shots and finished in under 4 4 1/2 hrs. I can report a much improved, worthwhile experience-I will play BG again!

Something different happend yesterday (Saturday), the pace of play was slow for the first seven holes and then the marshall came out and the slow group started to keep up. That is the good news and now the bad. Too many cart path only holes and side hill lies on this course. The course is gitting better after it was closed.

What a terriable experiance, it took us 4.5 hours to play 12 holes then left. on our way out the green on 16, all of 17, and 18 except the green were open. yet the pro shop said all holes were occupied and it was just a slow day. to the course now, it hasn't improved much. lots of areas still are still ground under repair and the only new improvment i could see was added grass on the left side of hole one. yet we didnt get to play 13-18. Hopefully people will stay away so the owners can get new management in there that care. Because as we were told from the pro shop there is nothing they can do. Funny how all the other courses around seem to handel slow play just fine.

Played here Tuesday 4/29. The course is in good shape, has not completely healed from all the maintenance work they did recently. Closed for 10 days and a lot of work was done. Many of the holes are still cart path only, the resodding is still visible but does not affect playability. Tee boxes were in great shape, fairways were decent but still being worked on in some spots. Greens were spongy in some spots but rolled fast, and tricky, and yes they roll towards Disneyland (Starter made it a point to tell us). Bunkers were OK some seemed to be hard with little sand but may be in work.

Rattlesnakes were out and about. We encountered one just off the green on hole 13, about 3.5-4 foot long, maybe 6-7 year old (could tell by the rattles). It was slithering toward the green, about 40 ft from it when we came up, good thing we spotted it. Informed the marshal, they evidently will capture it and take it to another area away from players.

Service was great (as we experienced at the GK outing in Feb), would rate the course a 7 or 8, once everything heals it will be topnotch again. $52 senior rate was good value ($87 normal fee).

Played this morning 4/10. Greens not healed yet. They are rolling ok with regards to speed, but punches are still visible and affect roll. Rest of the course is in pretty good shape, not many complaints. Have to again say good job to the staff....first class today, much appreciated.

No comment on traps, was in one, it was fine. Tee boxes were level and lush. Fairways were lush. Rough was up probably 3-4 inches in most spots, in some spots rough was 8+, basically forget finding your ball cuz it's lost.

Played here Saturday 3-8-08.What a wonderful course even though it ate me alive..This course is in great shape, greens were very fast and every putt you hit, the ball would head towards the big "A"no matter where you were on the green. fast pace of play was not there. the 4some in front thought they owned the course. We only went to 16th par 3 in the dark.
Recommed this course..Cart path only on a few holes. Bee hive on the 10th teebox which was very destracting.

Played in the GK event, 2/22. Considering the heavy rains earlier in the week, overall, the course was in good to excellent condition. The greens were medium fast, a few were bumpy. Fairways & rough were above average but wet from the recent rains. The pro shop and the dining facilities were excellent. I had 2 meals there and the service and food was excellent for the price. I had no issues with the condition of the course.

The layout of the course is a different story. Many holes have environmentally sensitive areas left, right or both. We played the white tees in this tournament and over 50% of the par 4 & even some par 5 holes would be better played with a long iron/utility club than a driver off the tee. If I want to tee up and hit long irons or fairway woods to a patch of ground w/o a pin, I'll go to the driving range and hit a backet of balls for 10% of the price, thank you. It is probably a much better course from the blue or black tees, but from the white tees, if you hit the driver even 250, it better be deadly accurate. Definitely not a course where you can spray the ball. Perhaps my opinion would change if I played it more, but there were too many quirky holes with blind shots requiring layups for my taste.

Once again a great outing organized by JGK- finding a terrific course for us to enjoy coordinated with first-rate hospitality. From the moment we pulled in, the support and consideration the Black Gold staff showed was unrivaled.
I agree with all previous reviewers. Best to bring your ‘A’ game to this course- esp on the greens- few if any of the holes were cut on a flat spot- a lot of movement around the hole+ miss on the wrong side [downhill] and you’re facing a longer putt coming back up. For me, the layout may have been the best aspect: every hole presented a different challenge and many provided genuine risk/reward shots from the tee box. I personally enjoy the test of an undulating course- Black Gold uses the environment creatively- but beware- as mentioned the course is cut into a hillside facing west. When a strong on shore flow raises up, a number of holes play much harder.
BTW- check out BG’s website: it features a hole by hole ‘helicopter tour’ of the course- and the carts have a GPS system that offers green slope and direction around the pin [being more of a hardcopy type of person, I will purchase a yardage book next time].
It was a long haul from the VC to get down there- however this course is worth it. Thank you again to JGK, staff, and Black Gold for hosting this event.

h8bogeys - "Hate Bogeys"
First off, most GKers can't seem to say the username....the name is NOT....H..8...BOGEYS. It's "H and 8, putting them together....H8....oh....hate bogeys. Anyhow, lets get to the review of the course:

TEES & FWYS: Given the fact that I've never played this course, I can't really compare what other reviewers have said about the course. From a one time empirical observation, the course is PHENOMENAL!
The tee boxes were immaculately cut, fairways were in great condition, I didn't really have any problems with the ESA (environmentally sensitive areas) so it didn't really come into play during my round. Most fairways and the holes for that matter have elevation changes which really challenges your mental game to select the right club.

GREENS: This is where I had problems (scoring wise)....they had some patchy areas, maybe some recovering viral infection? But, this did not affect the roll of the ball. Course knowledge is definitely a plus, I just couldn't figure out the breaks, FATHER CHEESE said it right, "A two-footer was no gimmie". Most greens were very large, even though it has rained the last few days, and we got rained on while playing two holes, the greens were very fast and not very receptive on the chip shots. TOUR QUALITY GREENS, I like that!

STAFF: The staff was great, very courteous, the post-round event with the GK outing was very nice. I had a chance to meet other GKers. This course is a must to place on your rotation once the weather conditions improve.

OVERALL: Great course, the views were picturesque, alot of photo-op opportunities, at one point I think we were able to see all the way down to Newport and looking slightly southwest a view from Long Beach was also pretty clear to see. Once we get some sunshine again, I definitely want to challenge the course, particularly the greens since they kicked my a#& during this event. Thanks to the staff, and JohnnyGK and coordinating GK staff for a great event! And if you see me next time, now you know.....it's HATE BOGEYS, not H....eight...bogeys!

Played in the GK outing on 2/22/08. This is a really nice facility and the staff was friendly. Parking was really convenient - no long haul to the club house. Driving range is also very conveniently located near the 1st tee. I really enjoyed playing the course, despite the wet conditions. Some of the views are really spectacular.

I somehow managed to play this tough course without a 7 on my scorecard, and finished with my lowest GK Casual outing score of 92. Fairways were often very tight, with trouble on both sides, but it didn't stop me from pulling out the big dog on every hole - I was even able to launch a 335+ yard drive on the tight par 5 #13 fairway with the help of the downhill slope. The elevation changes and wind however usually got the better of me as I misclubbed several approach shots.

Hopefully we can make it back to this course under better weather conditions - the "Cart Path Only" rule seemed to significantly slow play...and we weren't able to fully utilize the really cool GPS system in the carts since our shots were often so far away from the cart path.

Thank you again to the great staff at this course - if greenskeeper comes back, I'll be there.

Gotta agree with ringworld 100%. The event was well-run, the course was challenging, the greens were firm (considering how wet the overall course was...I was surprised ho firm they were...) and - a 2-foot putt here was no gimmee. It could be an adventure. Subtle and not-so-subtle breaks on these greens a-plenty!!

Even though my best friend and regular golfing partner lives walking-distance form there (in Yorba Linda)...I've mostly avoided Black Gold in the past due to prior poor conditions...but the place looks very good overall. When the course has dried-out and later this spring...I'll be back.

If you don't bring your A-game - you could be in for a long day of golf!

Played in the GK event today. Cold weather. Rained for 1 1/2 holes. Thanks to the staff and grounds crew you guys rock! Wish I played better but hey it was good golf at Black Gold. Greens ran true. Very tough for me to read and elevation changes really played havoc with my depth perception. But these are not the course's fault I blame golfer error. :D Course in good shape. Soggy from rain the night before but very playable. Rough is deep, stay out of it. Very strategic golf shots are required with ESA and OB at every turn. Good test of golf if played with an even head.

Once again thanks for the hospitality Black Gold, I shall return to hopefully play better :D

Played today 2/14, and am very happy to say that the course is in great condition! Greens were rolling about a ten and minimal ball marks. Fairways were almost completely healed, there were some slightly patchy areas, but virtually not noticeable. Tee boxes and sand traps were good.

I still think this place is a little overpriced for the full rack rate, but if you can find a discount tee time, it's well worth 60-70 bucks in my opinion.

Staff is cool and accomodating.

I was concerned about playing the course (I was invited out by some collegues) because of some of the reviews I had read. I also had heard Black Gold had had a tough summer. What I experienced after some trepidation was a golf course in much better shape the expected, some of the best greens I had ever played and you could tell the course was working hard to right the ship. I noticed a lot of sod along the course and the maintenance crew I came upon were all working hard on grass projects. I even spoke with a pro named Larry who told me about their struggles and what they have been working on. I think they are on the right path and the course in my mind was as good as any of the others I had recently played. I think they are much better. Also we could drive on about 60% of the course (excluding par 3's.) They told me at check in that their cart path only status was no longer. Thank god, because the course is tough to walk.

Greens were in great shape, best i have seen in two years. The customer service was very good this time. I have had problums there before with very poor attitudes. The only complaint i have is when cart path only the customer should be told. But the rate was very good, higher than quoted on phone but only by a few bucks and the guy in the pro shope honored his price. that was very cool. Now the problum. The fairways were the worst i have ever seen there. There were huge dead areas, tons of mud and lots of ripped up areas from mowers, #16 was almost totally ripped up. They are working on it so give it sometime, maybe they are getting their act togeather....

played early this morning...found an online discount for $45, which i thought was a great deal since regular green fees are $90

even considering the discount, i don't think the round was worth $45...

lets start with the good...the scenery and views are top notch...there was some fog this morning, but once it cleared, the views were great...the tee boxes are in excellent shape...

for the mixed bag...greens are very firm and very fast, but you can see occasional ball mark damage...the golfers who have been playing this course regularly do NOT know how to fix ball marks properly, and it shows on several greens...

now for the bad...the fairways and rough are in terrible shape...virtually every hole has bare spots, large patches of mud and dirt, and parts of the rough are just mud...do not believe the pictures on their website...the conditions of the rough and fairways there right now is flat out bad

my advice...give it at least two weeks, maybe even a month or more, depending on how quickly they fix the damage, before you consider playing this course...

if you dont mind the dirt and mud, and dont mind moving the ball around to better lies on the fairway, then the internet specials may be worth it for you...like i said above, the tee boxes and greens are in decent shape...

but otherwise...give it some time, because when this course recovers from whatever happened to it, it will no doubt be top notch...the potential is there, but its just not good right now...kind of like a pretty girl with a hot bod, but has an acne outbreak or rashes or something...sorry if that sounds sexist

The greens have really come around and were nice. The rest of the couse is still not there. They are watering it like crazy, CART PATH ONLY (which they don't tell you until you get there), and the fairways and rough are still growing in. They did the "standard" here are your free NIKE golf balls. They still need to get with the program and lower the rate until the course is ready.

What a joke, a sleeve of balls! Lower the price to $65.00 (weekends)until the course is in better shape.

My mother always told me that if I didn't have anything good to say about something I shouldn#t say anything at all, but in this case I'll make an exception.

Previous post is entirely correct if a little short on details. I had played Black Gold at the end of July and was quite looking forward to playing it again (on Friday 12 Oct). Place has gone downhill faster than a rock off a cliff. Fairways are just gone. Got to the stage where we were aiming for th semi rough just to get a half decent lie.

Greens were never great in the first place, and they have not imporved. Covered in pitch mark, half of which have not been repaired.
Tees were average at best.

They have a sign in the pro-shop saying "Black Gold guarantees a 5 hour round". What it should say is that your round is not going to be less than 5 hours.

As compensation for the state of the course we were each given 3 Nike Power Distance balls on the first tee. $1 off would have been more useful than balls I'd never use.

Guess I don't really need to say if I'll be back soon.

played on Sept. 27, 07. this was one of the worst golf courses ever i have played. Fairways were horrible conditions. Dead spots are everywhere and terrible water drainage. Hard time concentrating on swing due to loud noise from near construction areas. Total waste of green fees.

Played Sunday the 23rd. Had a 11:15 tee time. teed off about 10 minutes late and was told on the first tee that they had a tournament in front of us... 5 1/2 hour round... Had to leave early. Yes the fairways are in bad shape, but they are admitting it and gave me a half off coupon for a future visit. All I ask is for communication... When I call to make a tee time, tell me there is a tournament going on and that the course is in bad shape. Don't wait till I get to the first tee. Also, let's lower the price right now guys. This is not a $115 course!!!

Black Gold needs to lower the rates, period. More like $50 per round. When paying $85 to $150 to play at a C-of course, justifies joining Yorba Linda Country Club. At least they take care of their track. And BTW, Yorba Linda and Coyotte Hills do not have the same conditions that Black Golf experienced with the dry heat AND they are 5 minutes away from each other. hmm... B.S!

Management at Black Gold decided to give the golfer a $4 crappy Nike Power Distance to justify the cost? Complete insult.

I avoid playing at this course of all cost. When paying $100+, I rather play at Coyette, Tustin Ranch, Oak Creek, Strawberry Farms, and etc..

Awhile ago, I took at friend from North Carolina to play at Black Gold. He was amazed how much this course cost. And I told him there is only a couple of courses in orange county that is worth $100+.

Black Gold Golf Club recently re-turfed its driving range hitting area and half of its tee boxes (the ones now in use) with summer heat tolerant 328 Bermuda. Those areas, our greens and bunkers are in great shape as we head towards the end of summer. We are however experiencing less than ideal fairway and rough conditions as our "cold season" rye grass struggles with the near record summer heat. We do believe our experience warrants our rates, but we are electing to give each paid golfer through the end of summer a free sleeve of Nike Power Distance golf balls as a way of saying thank you for sticking with us when we are not at our admitted best. We hope you appreciate our forwardness and honesty and we are thankful for your patronage.

Played today 9/15, I was very disappointed with the condition of this course. Fairway, tee box and greens was no better than a public muni course, not worth the $$$ at all. A shame the layout is great, but so what? Marshall said that the recent heat really caught the greenskeeper by surprise, which is a lot of bs. Nearby courses such as Coyote hills is 10x better condition. Will not recommend at all, unless they really put effort to heal the course.

Played yesterday 9/7. This course doesn't even worth $85, from tee to green I can't say anything good. All tee boxes are a mess, fairways are even worse, the green run too fast about 12 in stimp meeter. No wonder, the starter giving us 2 sleeves Nike balls to keep players keep coming back to play this course. I only like the lay out and design but the condition should be below 6.0, I won't coming back to play in this course. People who play in this course are people who lives around the golf course.

Played here on August 31...it was hotter than a motha out there. We teed off at 8:03am...played the round within 4 1/2 hours. The course was in great shape considering the hottness. They did over water the fairways since they are getting ready to punch them. Some tee boxes were closed; which was a bummer since we wanted to play the tips. Shot an 81; great score for me.
Over all the course was fun and I would for sure play there again. However, I will wait until it is a little cooler to see how the course responds. I highly recommend playing this course; if you can play on a weekday.

Considering this is afavorite of mine I have to give it poor marks right now. The tee boxes are a mess though they are in the process of replacing 1 or more on every hole. If you play the blues you could be hitting anywhere from the tips to forward depending on what they are working on. The fairways are terrible with lots of bare spots, divot damage and severe over watering. Because of the water at least half the holes were cart path only which really slows things down on this course especially since they don't tell this. Also I don't thing they mowed most of the course because of the water so the rough is bad being thick and wet. They definetely should not charge full price for these conditions. I would recommend staying away for a few weeks until things have improved.

As i have read from others black gold is a golf course that has taken a pounding. Half of the holes were cart path only and because of that there were more divots than grass. They are resodding many of the tee boxes so the ones in use are totally ripped up. They are making alot of attemps to improve the course, but because of this there are many areas being neglected. Then to the greens. They are bad as usual. I dont think this is fault of the course just the people that play there. All though i have seen many times people driving carts in areas they are not supposed to be but i guess the marshalls are to interested in place of play. Which to their credit has improved and is very good. A lot of the local courses are offering specials due to course conditions, but maybe they get enough play. This wont be from our group untill the conditions improve.

Course is in very poor shape right now, which is sad because this is a great track. Tee boxes are chewed up and under repair. It was hard to find a flat area to hit from. Fairways are soaked and ground under repair on every hole. Sad to see this course go down like this but I would recommend waiting a few weeks before thinking of playing this course.

Some pretty harsh comments since I played it last so I had to come and see for myself 8/2/07 ... plus, I enjoy this layout. It's tight in some areas, for sure, but that's part of the challenge. Some thought has to take place before you strike your ball. Anyway, yes, there could be some improvements (drainage and green upkeep) but not to the point where it's not worth playing. Most of the damage is from unrepaired ball marks ... plus, there's something going on with the greens (a fungus among us). Tip: go online and look for deals (click4teetimes) and you may save some $$$.

Also, they were re-sodding most of the back tee boxes so the Black tees were closed, call ahead unless blue/white is okay. And lot's of construction taking place on the back nine, a bit of a distraction. All in all, a nice test of golf in enjoyable surroundings. Even saw some Roadrunners on the 10th tee ... but didn't see Wile E Coyote :) I can't say I agree with the last few postings but everyone's entitled to their opinion. Range balls are still free but they were hitting off mats, looked like the grass should open soon and in good shape. 'Nuff said.

$65 twilight rate feels like good value. Course not up to the obvious aspirations of the club and its website. Spotty greens, lots of unrepaired pitchmarks but they rolled well. Some nice holes, some dull ones. Drainage poor on some fairways and near some greens.

Played Black Gold on 4th of July. Brought my favorite players. We all anti'd $115.00 to play it. What a disappointment! I'm a 7 and I don't b$tch about course conditions very often, but this course and the service has fallen into bad times. The greens had been punched 3 weeks earlier and still had not even come close to recovering. Rough was shaggy and poorly cut. Traps were in poor condition. Bad drainage all over the place. Driving range was a dirt pile. From its pristine start and having played it 4 years ago, this course has been let go. I love golf and I play all over, even when courses have problems, but I would not come back to Black Gold and pay $115.00 to play a course in this condition. This course is now way overpriced, despite the wonderful layout from the course architect, who I think is Arthur Hill.

Played Sun 7/8 late morning. I don't know how new this is but Black Gold is guaranteeing a 5 hour round or less even on weekends.... yeah... in Orange County. They are serious about it. Had a marshal out that actually marshaled. Finished in 4 1/2 hours. The course was in good shape and was really a fun course. Landing spots from the tees were fair. Tee boxes were fine. Fairway bunkers seemed well placed on a few holes almost begging you to hug them around small doglegs. I got suckered into one. Traps were well kept although lacking a little fluff. Greens were med/fast, with only a few unrepaired ball marks. Looks like they were punched a little more than a week ago. Remember that most greens roll towards Disneyland. Really enjoyed our time out on the course.

ok, I wanted to give black gold one more shot. I really don't know why I do. After 6 times playing it, here is my conclusion. Black Gold is completely one dimensional off the tee and second shots. I find around the green to be fun in which require some creativity. In terms of the quality of Black Gold, I give it a thumbs down. Houses are too packed in and a minor error will result in losing your ball. I played it when it was at its best and worse. For the price, its not worth it, period. Maybe charging $50, but that is unrealistic knowing what they paid for the land. If you want to score well at this course, don't take out your driver. I mostly broke out my two iron yesterday and scored a 84. Boring course.

Pretty much agree with previous postings, although I know they're going to punch the greens this week (end of June) so don't forget to ask. Afternoon rates are $55 during the week, very reasonable. Unlimited range balls was a nice feature. Play was a bit slow (just under 5 hrs) but the course has a fantastic/scenic layout. A fine challenge for golfers of most levels, but high hcp'ers should be ready to lose a bunch in the rough. Lot's of red/green stakes, too. Mostly canyon/target golf, and you will need some local knowledge to master the large, fast greens and some of the blind shots. Can't wait to play it again.

Accurate driving at Black Gold is more than desired........ it's a must! First time challengers beware. Open ocean waves of undulation abound from tee to green. The greens are as hard to manage as a greesed pig. I enjoy this course in the morning hours before the greens become too frim and fast. The plus side is the greens run very true which can lead to some long bombs. Sloping fariways make this in many ways a target course. Bring the A game and enjoy this gem of Yorba Linda

Played here on Friday, 6/15 for the first time. Liked the layout of the course. There are a lot of elevation changes on the course. Great views of the valley on the course. The course is in great shape. The greens are a little firm in spots. Putts seem to break toward the valley or Disneyland. Fairways, sand, and tee boxes are in great shape. Some of the fairways were a little wet in spots. There are a lot of bunkers on the course. The rough here can be a little tough to hit out of. It took us about 4 1/2 hours to finish our round. Will be back to play here when we are here in the area.

The course is in great shape and the staff was very friendly. It's a challenging layout that is well-manicured and offers good elevation changes which provide some great views of the surrounding areas. The greens were a joy to putt compared to the other courses I've recently played. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience despite the high cost and look forward to going back.

Played 5/16/07. first time playing this course and I was impressed by the level of service provided by the staff. Tee boxes were in great condition , fairways were lush and in great condition. Greens were rolling super fast about a 12 and very firm according to the starter. Overall a nice place to play very difficult if you are not straight though due to some tight fairways but in all fairness there are some risk reward holes out there and I found more risk than reward. My only problem I saw were the greens with alot of ballmarks. I truly can't understand why some folks just don't take the time to repair their ballmarks on the greens it only tkaes a few seconds. I will be back to this course in the future regardless.

What an experience I had at Black Gold! From the moment I set foot in the clubhouse I felt like I was at an exclusive club. Every employee I came into contact with greeted me with a smile and a warm welcome. On the golf course, I felt miles away from everything. It was windy the day before so the day I played (in May) was so clear and beautiful - I could see Catalina Island! I played with my husband and another couple who were having a great time as well. The fairways, greens and rough are all in superb shape. The service and atmosphere can't be beat at Black Gold. I am thinking about becoming a member of their Player's Club. It's the best deal in town! And they are now prorating it to $99 for the remainder of 2007. If I play even just 3 more times this year it pays for itself, not to mention all the other free stuff that you get!!!

The course was playing good. Everybody says how the greens are to fast, but I think they are just fine. You simply just need to make a putt. This makes it an exciting challenge.

Played this past weekend and I have to say I am excited about a new promotion they are having. This "Beat the Heat" promotion is pretty cool because your first beer cost what you shot that day. I shot a 89, and my first beer cost 89 cents.

They always seem to be haveing cool promotions.

I would recommend this course to anyone. I read the reviews and didn't even believe some of the stuff I read. Of course there were areas that needed improvement, but overall this place rocks. Nice people all over the place. Met two or three employees who thanked me for coming out. Greens were nicer than my two country clubs. I played on a Friday in the morning and they were busy. Pace of play was good. They have a new policy in place that seems to be working. Price is high, but so is everyone else. I did get a better rate by using their website which guarantees lowest rate. Worked out nice.

The people at Black Gold try very hard to please you. They were excellent. The course is all over the mountain, you never know where it is going next. The fairways are nice for the most part. Don't get in the rough in places extremely wet and long. Way to many ropped off areas. Greens are not extremely fast but slick like a pool table. Ball does not hold any of the greens. Greens appear to be almost dead in spots.

Played on 4/19. Fairways were in excellent condition. Teed off at 6:30a before the start of some tournament they were hosting. Course overall was in excellent conditions and the layout was interesting with varying elevations for the tee-boxes. Rough was unbelieveably tough but not impossible.

The only thing that made the experience tough was the greens. They were simply the fastest greens ever. Putting on concrete was slower. Not sure if I was spoiled with slower greens but it was excruciating pain with the pin placements. I was only hoping that it was because of the tournament that they made the pin placements tough.

Overall, it was a great experience but I would consider returning only if the greens were a bit more manageable or my game got considerably better.

I would recommend for <5 hdcp players to enjoy. Others - take heed of the greens.

Played 3/27. Tee boxes and fairways are in excellent condition for this time of year. The layout is challenging but fair. While not severe, the elevation changes from tee to green require some consideration. The wind was strong yesterday and we had to duck out from a "microburst" cloud that hit us real hard with lightening, hail and rain!
Now, for the real problem! The greens, if that's what you wish to call them are the worst I have ever seen at a club of this caliber! This has nothing to do with the punching 2 weeks prior! I can tell the difference between good conditions and bad conditions even after regular requireed maintenance. The greens should be completely reseeded. I will not play here again until or unless they improve the greens.

For being 8 minutes away, I would love for this course to be my home course, but its way over price in what you pay for. I would recommend playing on the weekday to justify playing. The course is fun and provides some interesting creativity while playing. GREENS are completely horrible, period. I really don't understand why. If there was a competition between Birch Hills Golf Course and Black Gold, Birch would put them to shame. They need to slow down the greens and they look spotty, the color green, nor, poorly taken care of.

Played the course on 2/19/07 for the first time and found it to be quite a great experience. Although doppler indicated that we would probably play in a major downpour, the skies stayed clear and we were able to play our round without a drop of rain.

I thought the course was in impeccable condition. The fairways were uncharacteristically green for the time of year, and the rough was very thick. It truly is a challenging course that requires you to hit fairways and greens - if not, you're in for a long day. After the turn, I put away the big stick and played fairway metals off the tee and my score improved dramatically. I would suggest the same if you're not a straight hitter with the driver.

My only criticism of the course would be the greens. They are already very difficult because of the crowning, but I thought that the greenskeepers weren't taking care of the greens as well as the rest of the course. Although they putt true, the greens were bumpy and inconsistent. Part of the reason is players not fixing ball marks. You would think players paying up to $100 for green fees would have the etiquette to fix their marks.

I can't wait to come back...maybe after a a couple days on the range with the driver.

I really enjoyed my round at Black Gold. The course presents an exciting challenge all 18 holes. The fairways and greens are kept up in very nice shape, giving me the satisfaction and the green light to return. I really enjoyed the view. It was a clear day so I saw Catalina Island with no problem, it was an absoloutly an amazing view.

The staff was great! From the time I checked in the Golf Shop until the time I finished my round the staff was helpful with answering my questions and assisting me.

This was my first time golfing at Black Gold and I definetly plan on returning and highly consider it to be my home course. Also, I recommened everyone who is up for a memorable experience of golf to try this course out!!!

Perhaps because I had a horrible day on the greens???, but I thought the greens were really inconsistant! Most were very very slow, even though they didn't appear so, while a few were very quick! However all of them were bumpy. The fairways and rough were in pretty nice condition given the difficult winter we're had. Traps had lots of sand, although too many were unraked, but that is the fault of the players in front of us, rather than maintainence. NIce course, just hope they put some attention to the greens.

Teed off at 10am on 01/21/2007. Because of the recent cold, windy dry weather, the fairways are dry and hard and ball rolls a long way. So of course that means that the greens are rock hard and as fast I've ever seen here. Greens were smooth but b/c of their speed really tough to be aggressive. Overall conditions are as always very nice. Can't wait to play again.

Teed off at 1pm on Sunday 10/22/06. Finished at 6:30 just before it got dark. A little slow, but they had an Executive womens tourney out before us slowing the whole course down. There was 4 groups waiting on the 10 tee. Greens are Good, coming back well from recent aerating, another week and they will be GREAT!!! Sand in the bunkers are perfect. There were quite a few "ground under repair" spots in the faiways. Looks like they just aerated the tee boxes. All in all though, the course is in great playing conditions. I was thinking of playing somewhere else but gad I didn't. I was standing on 17 tee and remembered wondering what I was thinking about not being absolutely sold on playing here. The surounding environment here makes it so peaceful. Will be back again, soon.

This is one of my favorite courses. As the starter will tell you, if you can putt here, you can putt anywhere. Course is currently undergoing a lot of work. The warmer than normal summer definitely took its toll on the course. Conditions are still nice for a round, but greens and fairway are just starting to recover from being punched and there are quite a few areas of ground maintenance to deal with. I thought with the nice weather recently that things would be a little farther along (after almost 2 weeks since work began) but I would recommend waiting another 2 if you are truly looking for ideal conditions.

We played here in October on Friday the 13th when the weather had 70% chance of rain. Of course, this meant that the views were spectacular from the highest elevated golf course in OC. We saw views of the ocean, from Long Beach to Catalina Island, including Angel Stadium, Honda Center, and even Disneyland. I myself haven't played here in a while but considered it one of my favorite courses ever since they opened in '01. I played here in '02 when the green fees were $25-$30 so management knows they have a really great course charging $100 (which is worth it in my humble opinion) since you get cart, range balls, and GPS. I do wish people would FIX THEIR FAIRWAY DIVOTS since the fairway here is lush and soft, and easy to replace (just do what Steve Williams does for Tiger Woods!!!) I'm considering jumping on their deal of the Player's Card (which will pay for itself!)

Played Sun. 10/01/2006 teed off at 1:20 and course was pretty empty. Finished in 3.5 hours, it probably had to do with them aerating the previous Monday. Greens still probably 2 weeks away from it being acceptable. Fairways are beaten up but I think that had to do with the heat from this Summer. It's going to take them a couple of more weeks to get back into shape. More homes built since the last time i played and it looks like more are coming. Especially on the back nine. 18 has a new tee box for the black tees. A little more elavated and a better view of the fairway. Still one of the nicer courses to play when they are not trying to improve conditions. It's a necessary evil but if you enjoy golf enough some holes on the greens will not ruin the joys of playing a visually rewarding course.

Big disappointment.
My son and I played on a Sunday. Round took 6 1/2 hours. Marshals were no help with obviously slow playing groups. Greens in poor condition. Fairways probably worse. Green design does not reward good play (many are "turtle back.") Range is cramped -- space between boxes is probably dangerously little. Clubhouse OK. We'll never go back.

This is a very interesting course with lots of challenges. Normally, it is in very good condition, but as of 8/27/06 the fairways were in poor condition. Also, the pace of play is very slow on the weekends. Played in 6.5 hours and waited on every shot of every hole.

Always enjoy playing here...the overall course condition always in excellent conditon no matter what time of the year. Today the white tees were really moved forward compared to the blue tees and made the course much shorter. However the tough undulating greens always make this course tough. If you hit it straight you are in good shape, however you still have to be able to sink your putts to score.
It was a warm day....could not find the cart girl for drinks and hardly no drinking water around the course except at the 2 restrooms (one on each 9).

Played here for the first time, friday 5/26. I had read comments about this track prior to playing and was interested to see for myself. I enjoyed my round here, especially getting a reduced rate on click for tee times. The course was in overall very nice condition. I agree with all the others who comment on hardness of the greens. I don't hit a particulary high ball or use pro v's so nothing checked up for me all day long. Seemed like all the par 3's were about 200 yds (where's the variety?), played about 185-190, and I hit all of them, only to watch them all trickle off the back. Other than that, I think this is a fairly forgiving layout with lots of room off the tee, but makes you work for your par because of the greens. Overall, nothing to stress you out too much, just a fun day of golf.

Got tremedous deal on click4teetimes.com ($45). Course is in very good shape. As always, fairways are immaculate, rough is well kept (where this is rough), and tee boxes level. The greens are cut very close and running fast. The service was great today, starter was very friendly and cart guys helpful. Only complaint is not with the course, but players... FIX YOUR DIVOTS FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!

Played 5/24. Course is in very good condition. Fairways great. Rough very thick at times. Greens nice except for an excess in unrepaired ball marks. I thoroughly enjoyed the round.

Hurry out there, before constuction kills the atmosphere. Already many of the back 9 holes are getting squeezed in, and it will soon feel like any other SoCal course crammed into civilization.

And, what the heck is going on with the #18 tee shot? Used to be a great drive into a saddle shaped fairway. Now off the Black tees, the newly constructed hill (for housing) on the left side completely blocks the tee shot. If you hit any fade, you will be aiming over the house. There is no bailout area either, you have to hit 220 minimum to a 20-30 yard wide fairway, hazard one side, OB other side. I would hate to see this fun Par 5 turned into a Par 4, but I don't see how they can keep the tees where they are.

Played 5/13/06....I must say that their customer service is getting better.....it was quite good......as far as speed of play...forgettaboudit!!! I know it's a Saturday and all but 5 2/3 hours is sick!! (The marshall gets a "D" minus for that) Usually play here isn't too bad....I guess the trick is to play only during the week....Anyways, the tee boxes, fairways were very nice......i actually love the greens here (even though a lot of people I play with don't like them as much because of all the 3 putts!!!) There is a lot of up and down elevation here-especially on the downhill sloping fairways.....calculate your yardage AND THEN take a club LESS than you think.....which makes your approach shot really tricky.....You must be below the hole on a lot of holes....if you are not, you will often pay the price of being in some nasty rough or downhill lie trying to chip back onto a sloping green with some insane cup placement.......and then chip over and back and 3 putt cursing the course!! ....heh......i love it!!! (except this course should have strict rules to whom can play the blue tees here.....ONLY 15 HANDICAPS OR LESS PLEASE!!! All others need to play the whites.....Trust me, it is plenty hard enough from there too!!)

10 things i noticed!
1. fairways in great shape, add that to severe elevation changes and u get some great rolls on those drives
2. interesting layout, good variety and balance of long par 4s and short, extremely narrow fairwars on short par 4s.
3. wow these are some of the hardest greens to hold an approach shot. i usually use a nxt tour ball at most courses but felt i had to switch to a prov1 after a couple holes where the ball released hard
4. i think its very posible to break a wrist trying to hit it out of the deep rough here, as the ball sinks in deep
5. if you have friends, like i do, who struggle from uphill/downhill/sidehill lies, play against them here haha
6. great last hole, decently long with water all around the green on the right: had a friend up 5 strokes versus another, hit tee shot ob, 3 wood from 270 into the water, flop shot into the water, chip and 2 putt for a quintuple bogey 10 and lost by 1
7. twilight rates, 52 after 2, or cheaper using click4teetimes or golfnow.com make it worth the green fee, though empire lakes for 40 bucks using the same websites seems a comparable value
8. lots of rabbits on this course..they were nice

As always the course was immaculate....no matter what time of the year, winter, summer or fall this course is always in great shape. The greens are so fast and very tough to putt with the multiple breaks. If you are not a single digit handicapper....play the white tees, you will enjoy this course more as well as not holding everyone up.
Need to have more marshalls on the course.....our GPS was not working in the cart and did not see a marshall....ended up asking one of the landscaping crew guys to radio someone.

Course was in incredible shape. The rough was really up. The lady in the proshop was extremely rude and un-friendly. The guy in there wasn't much better. I guess $84 a round on a Monday doesn't deserve friendly customer service. VERY RUDE!!! Starter (AC) was great however.

Played course on President's Day... and was very impressed. Perfect fairways and greens. Fairly challenging layout with thin fairways, strategic bunkers, and no workable rough. Green fee high but fair given typical Orange County prices. For a mid-to-low handicapper, a good value. For a high handicapper, which was the two groups in front of us, please try elsewhere.

I called them to see how busy the course was in the hopes of getting some holes in at super twilight. The young man who answered the phone told me that the course was kind of busy but was going to totally open up at one in the afternoon. To be on the safe side, I waited until two to make my way to the course.

Upon arriving, there were three groups waiting on the first tee. For the life of me, I cannot comprehend how this is anything near "open". Since there were three groups waiting on 1, the whole front nine was packed...thus, the whole course was packed. To top it off, there was a Ford truck parked in the middle of their driving range and it was closed. Of course, the guy I spoke with on the phone made no mention of that fact either.

I really hate courses that are dishonest with people like myself who call up trying to gauge where a good spot to play on a weekend or holiday would be. I passed up playing earlier at a different course because this dipstick told me his course would be wide open after one.

Just want others to know that they should be very wary about information they receive over the phone from this course. Apparently it is necessary to ask for a detailed account of all information related to the course in order to get a straight story. I believe that this course will tell you whatever they have to in order to convince you to come to their course.

Course in great shape, especially the greens. Tough breaks on the greens. If you can hit it straight, you can score well, however you have to putt well too.
Alot of constructions of new homes around the course. Got a free sleeve of Nike Balls for the noise of all the construction. Nice gesture.
Would go again.....but a little steep at $84.

Played Friday 12/09/05 and course was in great shape. The views are awesome. It was a clear day so we were able to see Catalina without even trying. Greens were super fast but understandable with the winds and low humidity we've been having lately. Front 9 is easier then the back, atleast that's what my scorecard told me. Staff was excellent as always. Can't wait to go back!

Great course in excellent condition. I just think $84 on a weekday is too much to spend on this place. I would rather play Goose Creek twice. I play once a year using my red dot two for one coupon.
