ok you will here is the skinny. This was the biggest dissapointmentin my life other than trusting a fart. This couse is so over priced I thought I was in a gas line. Other than one hole on the beach this is a track farm, might as well of been in oklahoma. Greens had sand on them, but still not to bad. Tee boxes were so unlevel you needed china's gymnastics team to stand still on them. Fairways were so brown I thought I was playing baseball in Tijuana. Staff was really great however they are not paying my fees, Luckily I had a two for one or I would have probably quit playing golf for sure. Troon golf is really dropping the ball, I will play oak creek, oak quarry, trilogy, salt creek, steele canyon, cross creek, mt woodson arrowood, barona and they all cost a lot less this is a 45.00 dollar course at best......

nice course overall; doesn't measure up to Pelican Hill, Trump Nat'l or Aviara but is also a little cheaper; expect better service level for this price range; they watered the practice green with fertilizer while we were putting, were running sprinklers on #1 while the foursome ahead of us was playing the hole and we had to ask twice to get someone in the pro shop to look for a lost item in our cart after finishing; beware that there is no range (although you can hit into a net); an overall very nice course but don't expect Pelican Hill South service or conditions

played on 6/24. Great shape. greens were awesome. smooth, fast, true, and had nice cuts. fairways were fine only problem, sand bunkers are everywhere and some were thin so I found the club bouncing off the floor. For the MONEY they charge EVERYTHING should be perfect and you would think you would have more beach holes. It's nice but not worth it at all!!!!

The first 5 holes are the money holes, inasmuch as you get ocean views (and literal beachfront on 4 & 5). But to be honest, if you're paying rack rate, you're dropping $250 for a couple of oceanfront holes, a few more ocean views, and then a pretty standard high-end housing development track.
Service was good, fairways and greens really nice. I, too, had a similar issue with a guy and his no-distance-control teenage kid playing behind me.
Troon has occasional specials, so put yourself on their spam list, and find a way to do a 2for1 for your once every five years or so visit to this typically-Troon overpriced "resort experience".

Played 6/28 with my wife. The course was in great shape, fairways were lush and the greens were running true. The only downside was that it took 5:25 to play 18. The two groups in front of us were all beginners so they hacked around the course and had no idea what they were doing. I dont know about you but I would not be dropping $250 for my first 18 hole course. I complained to the clubhouse and they were gracious enough to comp us 2 greens fees in the future for our troubles.

Other than that it was a great day and my wife and I played very well. I shot a 76, she shot a 95. It was nice to be out in the sun at the nicest resort in the OC. I will definitely play here again.

This is a beautiful course. Well maintained and very prestine. Worth every penny. Not to mention only course I got a hole in one at. Look forward to playing there again. Greens were perfect.

1PLUS1 - San Diego
Played on Monday, June 16; first time in over 20 years. While some holes from the original layout have been re-routed, others were new to me due to the re-model which took place in 2000. Golf course is fun to play, as it was back in the 1980s, but the facelift has increased the course length as well as the challenge factor.

Based on the yardage, it's a deceptive layout that demands length on some holes, accuracy off the tee on many, and precise ball-striking if you are going to take a run at a good score. Greens are undulated and getting on the wrong side of the hole can cost you. The only thing working in one's favor was that the green speed is medium, at best, which I found to be a bit disappointing. I rather putt on faster greens but getting them to roll at 10 or so could be nightmarish.

Excellent use of bunkering off the tees and around the greens, with the best sand I've seen in quite some time. Playing out of the typical less-than-desirable sand encountered at other courses simply doesn't compare to the luxurious feel of hitting out of crushed marble. Only drawback was the overspray from the early morning watering that resulted in a few wet lies in those traps that were affected and hadn't had a chance to dry out.

One issue I took exception to was the prevalence of "crowned" tee boxes. These are supposed to be teeing areas, not Donald Ross greens, and there were far too many in that particular condition to ignore. I'd like to see the maintenance staff address this problem and get them leveled out, which would further increase the reputation Monarch Beach enjoys as offering the best playing conditions in Orange County.

Greens were flawless, in spite of their slow speed, and nary a putt skipped off line. Well-struck shots stopped quickly as did low, spinning pitch shots. GPS system was top-notch and the yardage book, a bargain at only $3.00, also came in handy. As expected, the views from just about every hole were stunning, especially Holes 3 and 4, which abut the beach/coastline.

Pace of play was smooth; tee time was 10am and we were finished in the allotted 4 hours and 20 minutes. Service level was excellent, with a truly genuine feel, not overdone to the point of insincerity. From a personal view, I couldn't justify playing Monarch Beach for the full rack rate ($175 weekday; $225 weekend) so the '2-for-1' e-mail special received via Troon Golf was well worth it. The OC Trail Golf Card also offers a substantial discount that should be checked into.

If you're looking for a special treat and a great day of golf, Monarch Beach has all there is to offer: superb playing conditions, friendly, courteous service, a challenging and fun layout, and an idyllic location on the coast. Don't let the high green fees discourage you; sign up to receive Troon Golf's newsletter and take advantage of any specials that might become available.

course is in great shape. one of the nicest courses in southern california. it is worth the money for sure. the greens were hard but perfect speed. fairways were very nice. the nicest thing was the service. everyone was very helpful and nice. we must have seen the drink cart 4-5 times. i would try to play this course at least once every couple of months. i would recommend paying the money to get a caddy and walk the course. the only thing i wish they had was a driving range. so i could get out the kinks before i played. they have hitting nets, but it's just not the same.

This course is a treat. Reminds me of conditions at Pebble Beach and Spanish Bay in Monterey CA. Greens are what I heard called Tour hard. Very difficult to stick shots. Best strategy was to roll up but also difficult because of pin placement and undulating greens. Not difficult to read greens; they ran very very true. Course was immaculate. Tee Boxes were a little bowl shaped but not so bad as to cause concern. They were lush. Fairways were green, undulating but not unneccessarily unfair. Very obvious risk/reward shots. Sand and I saw my fair share were a little hard underneath but very easy to blast out.

Played Monarch Beach Golf Links for the first time today and thoroughly enjoyed the course and service. I found the playing conditions to be outstanding and the layout very interesting. We played from the gold tees with picture perfect weather. I quickly learned the price for errant tee shots as well as inaccurate approach shots…not to mention being on the wrong side of the green. At Monarch Beach GL, you have got bring your thinking cap and trust your swing. There are many holes you simply must be able to lock into the target, ignore the forced carries and gorgeous scenery and execute your golf swing. Around the greens the short game test is tremendous with many bunkers to content with. Once on the greens, wow, distance control is essential because they are full of huge swells and big breaks. At 6000 yards from the gold tees at par 70, the course rating is 70.0 with a 132 slope so you can image the challenge it presents.

As for the service, probably some of the best I have ever received. Bag drop, starter, cart personal, on course assistance, on course food/drink service, post round service, valet car retrieval – they have it down. This place knows how to paper its guests.

Overall, I believe this is golf course suited perfectly to the golfer who wants the high end experience. It is pricy but worth it. I will be back.

Made the long trek down to South OC to play Monarch. Had a wonderful time. Played during the middle of the week. Almost no one on the course, but the service exceeded all expectations and experiences. Wonderful course with enough challenge for the serious golfer, but enough room and accomodation for the leisure golfer. Others complain about the price and the short length, but most of those guys have vivid delusions of granduer.

Today, I used the OC Trail 50% certificate for $85. I highly recommend joining the OC Trail membership if you want to pay that low of a green fee. In other words, it would be hard to justify spending $170-$230. lol

Customer Service:
All I have to say, "WOW" (in a good way). So professional, so incredible nice and helpful. The starter today was very thorough with tips and explaining how to work around the golf course's characteristics. The Ranger was also helpful in regards to the greens. The round includes a Monarch Beach GC metal bag "dog tag" thing with my name engraved.

The Course:
Very well taken care of, period. It seems as though, they take some pride maintaining this course. Its somewhat challenging from the Blacks, but I was just enjoying the round. If you don't mind spending $$$, then, you can score well if you play it a few times. The greens are quite challenging. IF you are not familar with the greends and where to place the ball, then, it can be quite challenging. The greens are hard, but fun.

Complaints:
Only compliant are the worker bees taking care of the course. They were nice to shut off their blowers and tractors (its a first) and not chat while addressing the ball, however, it would of been nice if they weren't working while I was playing. Overall, no complaints.

overall:
I agree with others that reviewed this course. Its great for a once in a year treat, but not a course to play regularly. Just to pricey. You need to play this at least once.

Course is in above average shape, but fairways are far from what they should be at the green fee. The tee boxes, sand traps and greens were all in excellent shape however. A decent course at the 2-for-1 rate, but would not recommend at full weekend rate of $210.

Played here on 7/2 (at discounted rate thanks to a buddy who won the teetime thru an auction of some kind). I really like the layout of the course. Driver is uneccesary on several holes and approach shots are difficult due to areas of trouble around green (bunkers, grass bunkers, tough rough, etc...). The only complaint I have is the condition of the greens. We were told they were aerated about a month ago, but they were still pretty sandy and although they are not bumpy, they are very SLOW.

Excellent staff from valet to pro shop to starter to cart girls. Everyone was first class and helpful.

Played 6/8/07 which turned out to be a beautiful day with very little wind. Greens had been aerated earlier in the week but were recovering nicely. A lot of dead spots throughout course. All staff were very friendly and the starter was very informative. Green fees are too high. You are paying for a couple holes along the ocean.

I'd play this course again if I was taking a friend there for the first time. The full weekend greens fee in my opinion is too steep. If you can get a significant discount it is a great golf course with great veiws.

Monarch Beach was a very good golf course that is in near perfect condition. It's a good course for shooting low scores if you're driving well and putting good. The 50% dicount card I got with my OC golf trail card made the price reasonable. At full price I think it would be out of reach for me and many others.

This course is beautiful. Two holes on the ocean front. Short but challenging layout with a great deal of sand. Conditions are outstanding except the fairway on the 18th hole, which has many dead areas. However, these are perhaps the greatest greens I have ever put on. Every one was of practice green quality or better. True roll, nice speed, and just plain wonderful. Service is more than a golfer needs and the price speaks for itself. However, I had the OC Trails 50% off and for $105, it was worth every penny.

Went out early on a Sunday morning and nary a soul around. One guy a couple holes in front of me; I think the nearest group at least 4 holes behind. First the good. The greens were the truest rolling on which I’ve ever played. Neither too fast nor slow. They were in excellent condition (either not too many people hitting them or everyone repairing their ballparks.) For better or worse the ball went where I hit it with no bumps along the way. Also the tee boxes were level and very well kept—no complaints there.

The bad news, however, were the fairways. I heard one of the guys in the pro shop mention that it had been a tough summer for them in terms of the heat and humidity. There were more than a few bare/brown patches and what were obviously valiant efforts to repair damaged areas. To be fair though, when I was in the fairway I was always hitting from a decent lie. Just to look around and see the damage and rough spots; however, made me glad I had discount coupon for this round.

As for the layout, I found it interesting and mostly fair. I was advised that each set of tees plays about 300 yards longer than the scorecard indicates due to the wind and elevation changes. I don’t disbelieve that, although there wasn’t much wind during my round. One thing I will say about this tract is that it is uninviting to the driver. Long hitters can leave theirs in the bag as most of the holes value accuracy off the tee. Also on several holes after reaching the fairway you will find a phalanx of sand traps guarding elevated greens. I guess that’s a throwback to classic golf course design—more power to them.

In the end, what you are paying your $210 for are the ocean views, which on a couple holes are spectacular. Throw in 1st class service and high-end carts (two different sized cup holders for each rider) and I think it adds up to an experience that southern California golfers might try at least once. This is one of the courses, however, that you have to play a few times to get a good feel for, and at $175-210 a pop that prospect is a bit out of my budget.

The course is in really great condition, nothing to be critical about. A very nice track. The only downside is the price. I don't recall the greens being as difficult and having as much break, or maybe I just couldn't read them ?

This resort course is made for great golf and ample pampering of your game and ego.
With ocean breezes and generous fairways, the opportunity to have a great round of golf is not a problem at this resort course. As it is not overly long, you can be rewarded for aggressive play and you can always score better with conservative play. The course rolls well through a developed area with water or arroyos fronting greens or running alongside fairways. While there are very few straightforward holes, most of the holes have interesting features (tiered greens, strategic bunkers or sloped fairways).
Unfortunately, there is no driving range (the price to pay in having the course near the ocean) and the putting green is rather small. You will tee off on time and finish your round faster than you will want to play more holes. The clubhouse is well stocked (and over-priced)with wares and the food service near excellent.
The price is high, but the course and service is worth it.

I played at twighlight, 2pm and paid $125. I am a very scenic person and the ocean views are spectacular. Hole #3 is right on the beach. Even if you don't score well, you get your money's worth by playing here. The only tough part is the wind that is blowing 30-40 MPH due to the ocean. No Driving Range due to the limited space. Golf play was very slow, but I must have seen the Marshal 4 or 5 times. It's a course that is definitely worth playing and worthy of being next to the Ritz Carlton. The clubhouse is very nice and makes you feel like you are playing at a $100+ golf course. The best golf course still is Aviara, Carlsbad, CA.

course in immaculate condition as expected for the price. layout kindof disappointing with only two holes with true ocean views and back to back par 3's and 5's. non-punishing target golf due to the short length. greens were smooth but inconsistent, fast to slow. service was excellent. unfortunately had 7 holes as cart path only, enough to warrant walking instead. worth playing once for about 1/2 the current rate.

Play it during the week and save some cash. Quite expensive on the weekend. That being said, DO NOT miss the opportunity to play this course at least once. Maybe treat yourself on your birthday (or the day you got divorced!) Two holes on the ocean and many more with ocean views. First class service. Well maintained course. I love this course and you will too. During the week you can play it for about 1/5 the cost of Pebble or 1/3 the cost of the Trumph course. Reward yourself, indulge a little.

Played this course last September. Had a two for one coupon. Course and greens were in great shape. One has to be pretty accurate of the tee. There are some tight fairways w/ many fairway and greenside bunkers. The pace of play was excellent since we had the first tee time at 7am and were able to finish under four hours. I am not sure how the normal pace is , but we do play ready golf. This course is well kept with great service, but the normal rates are quite pricey. Also, a full range would also help. I was disappointed w/ the golf cages.

This course is very fun with less par 5's and an emphasis on finding the right spot on the fairway on par 4's to have a decent approach shot. I played with a "local" both Saturday and Sunday. This helped find the right tier on the greens, along with club selection. Many times I had "not enough"club in my hands. The greens held nicely but are very fast. I did not pay full price and I am thankful for that. Troon golf has not kept up it's standards with this course (soggy fairways, torn up tee boxes.) Maybe this was just due to weekend hackers. Very nice course all in all but not worth $150 plus. Playing into fog was awesome, some holes you could not see flag. Trusting my local was crucial, awesome time though.

FINALLY, AFTER THREE LONG YEARS THIS GOLF COURSE IS IN DECENT SHAPE. WITH NO DRIVING RANGE, TROON IS NOT ASHAMED TO HAVE FILTHY BATTING CAGES, WORN OUT MATS AND BROKEN OR NON EXISTENT TEES ON WHICH TO PRACTICE. ONE OF THE HIGHEST GREENS FEES IN OC, THERE IS CONSIDERABLE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT. BUT AT LEAST IT IS HAPPENING.

Golf course was in nice shape despite the rains. Tee boxes very level, fairways very green and lush but soggy for some areas, rough was thick but playable, crushed white marble bunkers were fine and the greens were rolling a little slow but rather smooth. Monarch Beach is a premiere golf course located in beautiful Laguna Niguel. This golf course has beautiful bunkering and medium sized fairways. The greens are trecherous if you are on the wrong tier. Despite having only 2 holes along the ocean, the views on the course are great. Big Houses border along the fairways, adding a little touch of class to an already upscale place. Service has been great every time I have played here. Price is outrageous but right now they are having a 50% off Feb special that can be printed off the website good for Sun-Thurs. At under a $100 for this period of time, I think it is a good value.

Played this course for the first time last weekend. It is a nice layout, with some great holes. The greens had some disease issues on some holes, but played quick and mostly true. The rest of the course is in great shape with only just a few areas that need to still recover from the recent irrigation upgrades. It certainly helps playing with someone that knows the course, with some blind tee shots, and many elavation changes. Overall, a very nice course. Now let's talk price. I paid the member rates with a friend, which is high for my normal round, but I certainly wouldn't pay the normal rate. The views were nice, but I could get them @ San Clemente also (but not the same conditions). I'll play it again, in a few months and look forward to it.

It still does not look pretty being very brown but was in fairly good shape. No evidence of irrigation work so maybe it is complete even though they were still offering 1/2 price on Sunday. The problem is there are still nicer courses even for $75.

Played 22 holes on Sunday 8/29 with GolfExtra ($75 per player). Although course is currently upgrading its irrigation system all holes were open. I can't complain due to nice ocean views, weather and staff. The greens and bunkers were in decent shape, however don't expect lush fairways @ reduced fees as they were thin with bare spots on most holes. Completed our round in under 4 hours. Overall a good golf outing at the price of $75 for Sunday in O.C.

The course is in abominable condition. There is a $60 special rate because 'two holes are closed for irrigation work. What the pro shop doesn't tell you is that the whole course is in terrible shape. Brown and bald spots on all of the fairways. Brown spots on many greens. No rough. Sand traps are in good shape and tee boxes are OK. They will be working on the course for 2-4 more weeks - suggest you stay away until mid October at the earliest.

If you can get a half price rate or some other special this is a must play golf course. At a regular rate of over $125.00 on weekday day probably not. Great layout, perfect customer service and amenities. Even though 1st hole was closed due to irrigation work, the day was excellent and so was the course.

Course was in good shape. This course is very challenging and it seems that every approach shot plays about a club longer. However, there is no driving range to warm up so the first few holes will not be very smooth sailing. An overall nice experience.

I love this course and will pay whatever it cost. This is Orange Counties best test for your game and far better than the new one South and the two on the coast.

No driving range for warm-up. Crummy cages with old balls. Putting greens severe. Too many traps on course. Not worth $185. 0r 150 on weekdays.

Played 11/9 around noon. Still cart path only, so stretched out the round. Course still pretty wet, but overall in very good condition. Our first time here, so we moved a little slower than usual in looking at shot alignments, putts, etc. Enjoyed the variety of holes, scenic settings, good condition of the course. Some minor things – not enough water available on the course – only after #5 and 15; same for bathrooms. More major - a few holes have VERY restricted landing areas off the tee for their length - #s 1, 7, 8, 9, 14, 16 – the back side is more “open” off the tee. All together, an interesting and fun course. However, green fees much higher than comparable SoCal layouts, so I wouldn’t come back frequently.

Stay away....The greens are like the beaches at Normandy after D-day. The golfers that play this resort course must have back problems because no one fixes their ball marks...Maybe this is a symptom of being associated with 2 very expensive resorts????

The Overseeding is just taking hold on the fairways and the rough...It is hard to pay $$$$ to experience conditions more suitable to a $20 course.

not worth the $150 and even at 1/2 off with golfextra it is questionable. Rough very long and if you play in the morning with fog you may never find your ball. Also lots of bunkers but the sand was not good quality. Also for warm-up they only have 4 cages. Would not play here for full price!

this golf course is over priced for what you get. soggy areas all over the course, golf course workers not very considerate they park in front of green when we were hitting up, they drove right next to us to spray, never stop mowing fairways when we were hitting. if i paid full price 150.00 i would be very disappointed. as is i was pretty disappointed at half price. many better course for half the price.

We had the Golf Extra 1/2 off, so the price was $75, but it was still not worth that much. 50% of my iron shots came from dirt rather than grass. I expected so much more, but was very disappointed.

I live close by and had not played it in 2 years, the course was in poor condition with many fairways bald. I have played public courses in Orange co. in twice as good of shape

I have played this course a number of times over the years, and I can't remember being as disapointed with the conditions as I was yesterday. The reason for my disapointment was that this course has been heavely over watered, and more than once my ball pluged just in front of greens, also I found that the fairways were not as lush as they were in the past, and in some places there were bare spots. The main reason that I continue to pay the price of $150.00 a round to play here is the condition of there course, but yesterday I was very disappointed.

At 150 dollars....this course is not really worth it.....obviously the course has great ocean views on the 3rd and 4th hole but thats the only great part of it......fairways were decent considering the value of the course but the greens were just tough.....very undulating and slick.....the PGA tour plays here for the Hyundai Team Matches and unless you want to spend 150 to play here...you might as well spend the money to buy tickets to watch the event live and see the ocean for just 35 dollars....
all in all...I would play here probably just once a year at the current rate unless the price goes down to 80 dollars....just have fun out there and do not worry about your putting because the greens do not do justice to it
